Shade Lord Ghost Drabbles: Cheating... Probably

Summary: I'd love to see a chapter about Buddy and Hornet just doing sibling things

Buddy was cheating… probably. They won almost every hand, more than seemed possible even if they had been playing this game longer than Hornet had. The question of how they were doing it was one of the two main things keeping her from calling them out. If she was going to call them a cheater, she should be able to present proof, preventing them from denying it. The other big thing that kept her sitting across from them even as she lost over and over was the fact that she might very well just be missing something about the game.

This was her first time playing the game or even card games in general. They were new to Hallownest – being locked in stasis had resulted in many things passing them by – and thus new to her too. She might just be missing something and thus playing wrong, resulting in more losses than seemed normal.

Spotting cheats in a board game and/or something played with dice wasn’t always easy but she could do it. Probably anyway. It had been a long time since she’d regularly played such games as a child but she knew the gist of what to look for in those types of games. This one though, she was utterly at a loss on how one even could cheat. The two of them took turns shuffling and dealing every round so the cards they each got should’ve been random, right? So how did Buddy keep ending up with so many good cards?

Obviously there was a way to cheat. Making a game that had any degree of complexity whatsoever cheat-proof didn’t seem physically possible. She just didn’t know enough about cards games to know how to do it, let alone spot how it was being done. Patience was something she had in droves though; she’d figure it out eventually. She just needed to keep playing. Given enough time and rounds, she’d outsmart them and would catch them in the act.
