The Long Way Euround – Day 5: Gippsland and Monaro Drive
Tumblr media
ay five of the Long Way Euround takes us back towards Sydney via Gippsland and the Monaro region of southern NSW.   After an action packed day on Day 4, today was a little more relaxed, but we still had a museum to visit and over 600km of driving to do. As this is the penultimate day of the trip, we are on our way back to Sydney. We started early in eastern Melbourne with some car repairs on the 500SL.   Even after tightening the hoses yesterday, it was still leaking power steering fluid.  We finally found out why.   The second generation cars had an additional spoiler at the front.   This had been attached with screws.  One of the screws was touching the cooler line for the power steering.  Every time the spoiler flexed over a bump, the screw would rub against the line.  After years of doing that, it had finally worn a hole.   The temporary solution was to cut a section of hose and cable tie it to the line to cover the 'wound'.   This stanched the bleeding at least until the end of the trip.
Tumblr media
The 380SEC continued to require a bypass for the fuel pump relay, but the owner of that car is getting his process down to get it restarted when needed.  It still does not like to idle for long periods of time, but runs very well when on the open road.   The bypass must have a lot of current going through it, as the connections are starting to melt a little.   It hadn't blown the 25 amp fuse, but that has started to melt too.   This seems more current than I would expect a Bosch fuel pump to draw and may be part of the issue. My car started out ok, but the wheel bearing noise became quite bad as we drove out of Melbourne.   So bad, that I phoned a friend in the MBCV to find contacts for mechanics in the Mornington Peninsula area.   At this point I was convinced I would have to leave the car in Melbourne. However, being a Sydney car, the threat of staying in Melbourne for a few more weeks was enough to get the wheel bearing to quieten down, and so since It was behaving itself, we continued.  It seems to very much dislike city driving with turns and stop/start, but tolerate quite well cruising at 90km/h. After we left Melbourne, we hugged the coast as we drove through Gippsland.  It was quite a windy and rainy day today, so there was quite a swell out on the ocean as we drove past.   The country was lush and green and there was a lot of cattle farming. Our first stop was Inverloch where we sampled another local bakery called Slice of Heaven.   The pies were very good, and the Vanilla slice was the best I've sampled on the trip.   It was also Inverloch were I made the decision to keep going with the 450SLC. Even in the rain the roads were quite good and we cruised along at a fairly leisurely pace.   Since I was trying to be gentle on my car, I returned the best fuel economy figures since I purchased it, all those years ago - 13.1 liters per 100kms. Our next stop was Maffra, where we visited the Gippsland Vehicle Collection.   This is a nice museum with a rotating collection.   As of October 2024, they have 20th century sports cars on display.  I've covered the museum separately.
Tumblr media
After the museum, we had lunch at the Maffra bakery.  We first looked at a fish and chip shop that was heavily advertised, but didn't take our fancy.   The pies were excellent at the bakery, and the Vanilla slice was good too. We kept going, as I was keen not to do the Monaro highway at night in the rain. After Maffra, we continued to Orbost via Lakes Entrance.   Going through Orbost brought back memories of limping the green 280CE into town on the first of these trips a couple of years ago.   We continued to cruise along, the scenery quite good and the roads good to drive on in this weather. After Orbost farmland started to give way to the National Park.   The road was quite wet so we had to slow down.    We were all getting quite tired by now, from our busy day yesterday.  A few of us got some snacks to re-energize, and there were a couple of power naps by the side of the road.   The countryside became more hilly, and densely forested with very large trees.  The road was windy, and It would be far more fun to drive on had the weather been good.   This is the second time I've driven this route in bad weather.   At least I had light this time. We turned off at the Monaro highway, which climbs fairly steeply through dense forest.   Even in the wet it was a good road to drive on, and in the dry it would be a great driving road.   As we got closer to our destination in Bombala, the forest suddenly gave way open country and sheep farms.    We finally cruised into Bombala at around 6:15PM, right on time.   Originally, we had planned to fuel up ready for the morning, but the main service station was closed, and the other one only carried diesel. We checked into the local pub where we are staying and went for dinner, which was quite good.   Tomorrow is the final day of our trip.

Wednesday 30th January 2019
Australia is a fantastic success story considering it is only 230 years since Europeans first stepped ashore. She has achieved so much in that time and even beats us at cricket from time to time. This is despite some Big mistakes along the way. One, I suppose worth noting would have to be the first settlement here in Melbourne, 1803. Through some form of miscommunication, and determination to pursue at all cost a misconceived plan, the settlement was built at Sorrento, on the Mornington Peninsula, an area without drinkable water, instead of the recommendation for the banks of the freshwater river, Yarra. The whole thing was an unmitigated disaster and only lasted 6 months before they all moved off, thirsty to Tasmania, with a number of people saying, well I told you so. As a result, it put a successful settlement here back 30 years before they tried it again.
Possibly the next big mistake was made by John Batman, who negotiated (bought) 2400 sq, kilometres of land to build a new colony, from the indigenous people. I say bought, but he paid for it with a casket of blankets, some mirrors, scissors, handkerchiefs and other assorted curios. After all, the British colonial claims relied upon the fiction that the original inhabitants didn't actually own the land that they lived on.
A further BIG mistake can be attributed to a one Thomas Austin who, in 1859 introduced 24 breeding rabbits to his estate at Winchelsea, West of Melbourne for the purpose of giving shooting parties something to aim at. I would have thought the old saying, breed like rabbits would have given clue to this folly. Well no, and now his name will be forever remembered for the rabbit infestation that currently exists across southern Australia. He might have invented an ingenious device for removing horses hooves from tramlines, but no-one would ever have heard of it. Rabbits is all we will know him for.
After a nice day on the beach, we are now sitting on the balcony with a lightening storm crashing around us. There has been some heavy rain but it is on pause at the moment. MASH is on the telly and we are about to go out for some fish and chips. Barramundi or Rockling maybe. It shall be cooler tomorrow according to the BBC, so another visit to Melbourne is called for.

Hello beautiful people,
I had taken a little bit of a hiatus to try and figure out what specific direction I wanted my blog to go in. And after over two months of contemplating and weighing my options (and being kinda lazy) i’ve come to the conclusion that my life is not interesting enough at the moment for me to make this a solid travel blog where I can share my adventures with all of you. So what I am going to do is stay exactly the same and put a mish-mash of whatever the hell I want up here! Enjoy :)
In saying that, I’m starting a new series on my blog called ‘Victoria Diaries’. When you’re at university, it’s so easy to get wrapped up in all work and no play so this is part of my cunning plan to force myself to explore and do cool shit in my new home so I can write about it and share it with all of you.
About two weeks ago my favourite tour guide/adventure buddy Sean and I headed off to the Mornington Peninsula to enjoy a little mid week spa day. After a stunning drive and a quick fish & chips stop, we finally arrived at Victoria’s little peace of heaven. The Peninsula Hot Springs are made up of multiple natural hot springs, some reaching up to 43° C and each with their own therapeutic benefits. The whole place just gives off a general chilled and super relaxed vibe. My personal favourite was the hill-top pool where you have a 360° view of the breathtaking surroundings while you relax and unwind. There is a rather authentic looking Turkish steam bath and sauna, as well as cold plunge pools for the crazies (like Sean) who want to shock their bodies and possibly contract hypothermia in the process. I definitely did not partake in the plunge pools-the cold is not for me.
PENINSULA HOT SPRINGS TIPS:
Take 2 towels with you – one to dry yourself/cover yourself while you walk between pools and one for when you’ve finished and need to dry off before putting your clothes back on.
If one pool is crowded, just walk right over to another one (there are about 20 to choose from), relax for a little bit and come back a little later.
Go early enough. Once you’re in, you can stay until the pools close at 9:45pm so take advantage of that and head there early!
Go with someone fun! The hot springs could easily be enjoyed by yourself but it’s always fun to experience these things with someone else.
All in all I give the Peninsula Hot Springs a 10/10 and would highly recommend a visit there to anyone who wants a little break from the city. What a great way to chill out and unwind!
Sending you all good vibes,
-D

MIKEY’S PERSONAL BLOG 119, August 2018
On Monday afternoon, I decided to focus on some mental health recovery and self-care by going down to YMCA Casey ARC for a spa, sauna and steam room session. Last week I experiencing a lot of emotional issues which were triggered by my social isolation, depression and craving company from friends. But today I felt like I was more prepared and tried harder to tune into my own solitude. Even sitting by myself at McDonald's Fountain Gate, whilst was challenging and a little uncomfortable, was still manageable. But it’s the only true way to build my strength and independence as a person. https://www.elitedaily.com/life/culture/being-lonely-and-being-alone/1203747
On Tuesday afternoon, I attended an information session for a Leading Platform Assistant, a job I applied for with Metro Trains, held at Cliftons Melbourne in Collins Street. I have to say that I was feeling pretty unprepared for this info session as I was so focused on other things happening in my life like work, dealing with my mental health issues, NDIS planning and an upcoming trip to Dromana. Plus there wasn’t many details in my email invitation as to what would be in store for me at the session. https://au.linkedin.com/jobs/view/leading-station-assistant-at-metro-trains-melbourne-801704675
Clifton’s, which is located on Level 11 at 440 Collins Street, is a conference center featuring a restaurant and several meeting/presentation rooms. It really wasn’t that surprising to see how corporate the environment and other attendees were, several of which were dressed in fancy suits. Today’s session stirred up some emotions in me because change and making decisions are huge triggers for me. I knew that if I continued along this pathway that I would have to somehow juggle my other commitments and that was a really daunting prospect for me.
Sitting in a nearby bakery with Mum, I started to work myself up over the numerous possibilities and what if scenarios around progressing towards getting a job with Metro Trains. The reality is that there are only 35 vacant positions available out of 200 candidates so as expected, this is a lot of competition to be successful. I was asking myself: Am I ready for this? Will I be able to handle having a second job? What if it gets too much for me and I have performance anxiety and mess up? But that’s what my brain does: gets ahead of itself and starts catastrophizing everything.
I need to focus on one stage at a time. The next part will involve doing an online video screening assessment followed by a group interview in a couple of weeks time. There’s still no guarantees but I feel like I’ll regret it if I don’t even try to go for this job. Life is all about taking risks and embracing challenges and while there are many barriers in my way to get there, I’m sure that I can do it. And if I’m not successful, then it’s still good experience to have. http://www.metrotrains.com.au/careers/
On Wednesday afternoon, Mum and I arrived at the Kangerong Holiday Park Dromana. We booked cabin number 16 which contains two bedrooms, a bathroom, a toilet, kitchen and dining areas and a lounge room. After settling in and working out an itinerary of sorts, we explored the main shopping district along Point Nepean Road which features many cafes, restaurants and retail stores. It’s been a few years since I last visited Dromana and despite a few new shops and residential properties being built, it’s pretty much the same. https://www.travelvictoria.com.au/dromana/
On Thursday morning, Mum and I visited the Peninsula Hot Springs in Fingal. You would think this would be a relaxing experience but sadly a lot of things were setting off my anxiety today: getting myself orientated around the retreat, feeling pressured by time, lack of sleep, irritability, impatience, mood swings, the behaviour of other guests (e.g. taking endless amounts of selfies and posing for photos), getting missed calls and messages on my phone, general worries about my life. My brain is so used to making plans and schedules so “relaxing” is actually not easy for me to do.
However, once I was actually bathing in the mineral water, I did have some moments of relaxation. We chose to get the bathing package which includes the Spa Dreaming Centre and Bath Houses with robe, towel and locker hire all included. Something I wasn’t prepared for was the amount of steps we had to climb getting from place to place but it was good exercise for both of us. https://www.peninsulahotsprings.com/experiences/bathe/
We were surrounded by lots of natural wildlife and bushland with a number of ducks, wrens and finches for company. In the afternoon, Mum and I treated ourselves to twin 45 minute facial treatments with two lovely female beauty therapists, Michelle and Eleanor. This was probably the highlight for me as I could spend the time meditating and doing absolutely nothing! We got to experience a range of essential oils, lotions and creams from the Synthesis Organics range as well as some gentle massage into the base of the head, neck and shoulders. https://www.peninsulahotsprings.com/experiences/spa/face/
I think that if I made visiting the hot springs a regular thing, I would be a lot more settled and less worried. The staff were all wonderful and welcoming. On reflection, I think that I got myself really wound up and overwhelmed by all the different options and facilities available that I didn’t know which ones I should make a priority. And also it took a while for Mum and I to navigate around through the bath houses and various baths and pools. But again being my first time, it was a lot to take in and next time it’ll be a lot easier for me to adjust to.
After this, my responsibilities from back at home came down on me like an avalanche. I got contacted by the local NDIS office in Narre Warren to arrange for a planning meeting to be booked. I was so unprepared for this as my head was far away from anything NDIS related. Plus I wasn’t expected to be contacted so soon with the rollout only a couple of days away. Why am I such a high priority? But anyway, it’s probably the most daunting step of the whole process so I’ll be glad when it’s over. http://www.disabilityservicesconsulting.com.au/resources/ndis-planning-how-to
I also had to cancel an appointment to see a sleep specialist in Berwick tomorrow. The timing was off and I really can’t afford to do it anyway. Plus I still want to considering some more natural remedies to help me sleep better at night. Money will always be a huge barrier for me but I know that getting adequate sleep and a good quality of sleep is important so I’m gonna do what it takes to improve on it. https://www.rd.com/health/wellness/insomnia-sleep-remedies/
On Friday afternoon, Mum and I went for a drive (with the assistance of the Google Maps navigation lady) from Dromana to Rosebud to Red Hill. After having a wonderful big breakfast each at Sliced Cafe in Rosebud Plaza, we visited to lavender farm to discover that there wasn’t much there at all besides a restaurant and a small gift shop. Obviously coming to end of Winter, it’s too early for an lavender to be growing but it was still disappointing that there wasn’t even a proper shop there. https://redhilllavender.com.au/
Next we dropped into Peninsula Galleries Red Hill which is located on a beautiful acre property. It’s surrounded on all sides by rolling hills, large towering trees and several different farms and vineyards. The weather was beginning to clear up as we arrived. We had a brief look through the art gallery and had an iced coffee. I was still feeling quite bloated and unsettled after the big breakfast this morning and the change in weather was noticeably affecting my mood and energy levels. https://www.peninsulagalleries.com.au/
On Friday night, we treated ourselves to a night out at The Rye Hotel. Annoyingly, the weather turned again and it began bucketing down as we left Dromana. But in typical Melbourne fashion, it cleared up once again as we arrived in Rye. The hotel borrows a lot of influences from 1920’s Art Deco style with lots of curved architectural features, glass panels and brass furniture. The stunning view from the main bistro area looks out over Nepean Highway onto the beach in the distance. Sitting close to the fireplace in comfy circular-shaped chairs, I ordered the classic beer battered fish n’ chips as well as a slice of mud cake. https://www.ryehotel.com.au/restaurant
On Saturday morning, Mum and I visited the Heronswood House and Gardens in Dromana to finish off our 3.5 day trip down to the Mornington Peninsula. Unfortunately my negative mood made an unwelcome return. At first I thought it was just due to the usual factors like the cold, Wintery weather, not getting enough sleep, daytime sleepiness, hunger pains. But I knew that there was a deeper, underlying cause. I suddenly realised that it’s Father’s Day tomorrow.
This day is such a huge emotional trigger for me when it comes around every year. The absence of my biological Dad and also not having very close relationships to many male father figures in my life always leaves me feeling empty, lost and depressed. Plus it’s really snuck up on me this year as I’ve had barely any time to process it or get organised for celebrating the day with my step-dad. It’s just one of those days I don’t like thinking about.
The other source was the fact that we’d be returning home this afternoon. This has been an ongoing issue for both Mum and myself in which the notion of “going back to reality” is a very distressing one. Not only is it back to reality but it’s back to my to-do list, back to my responsibilities, back to the area in which we live, back to work, back to routine. But the only way to really cope with it is to embrace things that we both enjoy doing in order to balance out the mundane.
The gardens themselves were very impressive: a cross between the royal botanical gardens and scenes from the film The Secret Garden. It contains a large variety of trees, shrubs, palms, ferns, succulents, vegetables and fruiting plants as well as massive pine trees and tangling vines. There is also a garden shop which is run by The Diggers Club and offers plenty of different plants, seeds, garden accessories and ornaments to buy at both retail and members prices.
The Heronswood heritage property was originally built by William Hearn in 1871 in the architectural style of Gothic Revival. It has more recently been converted into a fully-functioning restaurant which serves morning and afternoon teas and lunches. Mum and I decided to order a serving of scones with jam and cream each. https://www.diggers.com.au/our-gardens/heronswood/
“Mother Mary, Please answer my prayers, I want to run free, And I need you to be there. I'm going to take some chances I never took before, I've got to live my life, And I'm gonna risk it all. “I spend my life, trying to do things right but all I do is fall to my face with my hands on my head so many times. But then I learnt, after being burnt to get back up and push straight on stop the tears people move on, on. Well it’s alright to be myself, now I’ve learnt to stand. Well it’s okay to be just who I am. I spent years really hating me, longing to be friends. Now I hope that you can understand. This is who I am.” Vanessa Amorosi - This Is Who I Am (2009)

Melbourne, Australia
Tumblr media
18 August 2018 - 25 August 2018
Azrie and I booked a flight to Melbourne early May this year. Agreeing to go overseas together was impromptu (what could go wrong going on a trip with your best friend?) but we did plan when it came to our flights, accommodation, and places we were to visit. We intended to visit our friends who are studying there as well as to have an overseas trip together before his internship started. I’ve always wanted to study in Australia – and migrate there, if I ever have the opportunity to – but that didn’t happen of course, so travelling there was enough to make me excited. Besides, the last time I went Down Under was in 2004 and I barely have any recollection of it. I went to Gold Coast and Brisbane, I think. I only remember feeding parrots, going to the beach, and an amusement park. But I digress. Here’s what we did in Australia last week.
18 August, Saturday
We met at Changi Airport somewhere between 9 - 9.30am, and did some window shopping after we checked in and entered the transit area. We were due for take off at 11am, but our flight was delayed till about an hour later. Nonetheless, I was more than happy to be leaving Singapore. As we flew with Scoot, we had to rely on ourselves for entertainment throughout the flight. Even though I slept around 3.30am and woke up at 7am, I could barely nap on the plane. We ended up watching a couple of episodes of Elementary that I downloaded on Netflix while eating our lunch on board and sneaked in naps here and there. As I’m a sucker for nature, I couldn’t help but be mesmerised by the sunset towards the end of our flight. Here’s one of the many pictures that I took.
Tumblr media
Once we reached Melbourne, we had a few issues with our Visas but that was quickly resolved, and we went to the pick up point to meet Chavin. It was about 7ºC outside, I think, and it was raining and windy. After what seemed like an eternity of trying to locate his car in the cold, we set off to get a late dinner and picked Gloria up. We then dropped by the Coles supermarket across his apartment to get my SIM card before walking back to enjoy our steaming hot and spicy Mala goodness. Even though we booked our own Airbnb apartment, we stayed over his place that night.
19 August, Sunday
Our initial plan was for me to attend mass in a nearby church while Azrie checked into our Airbnb before we went to Phillip Island. Unfortunately, I overslept (Sorry God) so I ended up going to our apartment with Azrie as Chavin and Gloria waited for us downstairs. We had to retrieve our key from a convenience store across the road but we went to the wrong one instead (the one beside our building’s entrance). We had to drag our luggage in the rain but on the bright side, we met a little sweetheart whom I guess belongs to one of the staff.
Tumblr media
I didn’t take any pictures but here’s the link for our Airbnb (below’s the view from our apartment, though). It was so cozy and the view was beautiful. I wouldn’t mind staying there again when I visit Melbourne in the future. I’ll be back for sure hahaha. After unpacking our luggage, we met with Chavin and Gloria again before picking Syahmi up. We finally set off for Phillip Island around noon. We stopped by a gas station on the way, and the foodie side of me got a little excited when I saw that they had a mini bakery in the attached convenience store, as well as pre-made hot drinks (basically the powder was provided, all you had to do was pour hot water in). We were soon back on the road and reached the island approximately an hour later.
Tumblr media
We had our lunch straightaway as we missed the pelican feeding session, and had a mini feast of fish and chips at Fisherman’s Wharf. We fed our leftovers to the seagulls and headed to the Koala Conservation Centre after dropping by the beach. Despite not being able to fulfil my dream of carrying a koala, we did get to see several of them and even managed to stand less than a mere metre away from one. Part of the centre was also closed, but we managed to see wallabies and exotic looking birds (to me at least) along the main path, so I still enjoyed myself regardless.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As we didn’t intend to spend the night on the island, we had to hurry to our next destination – the Penguin Parade. The weather became colder and slightly unbearable as the sky turned dark, but waiting for the penguins to emerge from the icy waters was worth it as we were treated to several groups of them waddling for almost a good half an hour. Some of their slightly erratic behaviours gave us a good laugh now and then, contributing to their already adorable appearances.
We left before it became too late, and set off for our dinner location, YOMG Mornington, possibly because I asked Chavin if there were any good burger shacks around (foodie in me, once again). The eatery was in a town that seemed deserted and quiet (then again, it was already 9pm), not unlike the areas we passed through to get there. As if the darkness was not eerie enough, we listened to conspiracy theories and unsolved crimes/mysteries on the way. About YOMG Mornington, to put it simply, the food was amazing. We pretty much ate the same type of burgers (the Yo My with Cheese and the Kingsway) and shared the Chilli Cheese and Nacho Curly Fries as well. We had yogurt afterwards, which comprised a couple of unique flavours and toppings which weren’t really to my liking, but still worth trying. The ambience was also rather lovely and quaint and I wished that we could have stayed there a little while longer. The drive back to Melbourne took about an hour so we left shortly after our late dinner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
20 August, Monday – 21 August, Tuesday
The next two days were hellish, to say the least. To spare the details, Azrie and I were down with norovirus, or in other words, the winter vomiting bug. Azrie started displaying symptoms in the morning on Monday and me, on Tuesday. I either got it from him and or we got it from our lunch on Sunday (we ordered grilled fish while the rest had theirs battered – none of them fell sick). We spent both days in the apartment with nausea, stomach pains, and fever, and had to make trips to the clinic. We spent quite a bit on Uber these two days, but we were too sick to walk anywhere, except for that one trip to the ubiquitous Chemist Warehouse in a nearby town (Errol Street, I think) to get our medicine. Unlike Singapore, the clinics in Australia don’t have pharmacies attached to them. On a positive note, we managed to visit the Melbourne Observatory at night on Monday and attended a tour that lasted from 8 - 9.30pm. We were learned about the history of the site and were also fortunate to be able to view Jupiter from a large – floor to ceiling high! – telescope.

We were well enough to travel around on Wednesday despite our lack of appetites. We walked for half an hour to our recommended-by-Chavin lunch location, Universal Restaurant on Lygon Street. Azrie had the Chicken Parmigiana and Fried Chicken (basically meatballs) while I had the Marinara pasta. The weather was relatively warmer then so we enjoyed our lunch al fresco.
Tumblr media
After barely finishing half of what we ordered – kudos to the norovirus – we went to the Old Melbourne Gaol, which ceased its operations in 1994. We had a slight taste of what it was like to be arrested in a tour of the City Watch House, before proceeding to the jail connected to it. I’ve always been interested in history and culture and I truly enjoyed the two hours we spent there. Though it was already closed, we walked to the Federation Square afterwards to appreciate its architecture (but stopped by the State Library of Victoria before that). We then strolled along the Yarra River beside the Federation Square.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Winter Night Market at the Queen Victoria Market opens on Wednesday nights from 5pm - 10pm only, so we decided to have our dinner there. We rested for a while at our Airbnb after visiting the Old Melbourne Gaol before walking over to the market at 8pm. The atmosphere was surprisingly lively as there was a live band and other activities such as the silent disco and what seemed like a machine operated puppet show. There were many seemingly tantalising menus available and I wish that I had my appetite then. Azrie bought a cajun chicken and rice set and we shared a chicken skewer. After walking around a little more (and after I purchased a gorgeous pair of $35 light teal coloured crystal and tassel earrings – yes, it was worth it), we had a Nutella and peanut butter sundae. We met up with Chavin and Gloria, and Chavin came over to our apartment afterwards. We watched the endlessly nonsensical but otherwise entertaining The Interview before heading to bed.
23 August, Thursday
As usual, we skipped breakfast and went straight for brunch instead. We ate at an Indonesian restaurant along Lygon Street (I can’t seem to find it on Google. I think it’s new). Azrie ordered rice with chicken and I had noodles with chicken, and we shared a dish of sambal kang kong. The avocado shake I ordered was sweet and refreshing.
Tumblr media
We walked to the National Gallery of Victoria after that. We saw a myriad of artworks in various exhibitions, and I wouldn’t mind going there again. We didn’t get to go to the Museum of Modern Art exhibition as we didn’t have much time left before meeting Chavin to get food for our barbecue dinner, but it’s definitely on my bucket list – should I ever visit New York City.
Tumblr media
We walked to the Coles across Chavin’s after that, and dropped by the Spencer Outlet Centre en route. We didn’t buy anything as we didn’t have time, but we returned there on Saturday anyway. About the barbecue – there was smoke in his area for some reason. We waited for it to die down – and for Syahmi, Gloria, Caroline, and Natalie to arrive – and finally commenced our barbecue. We had a great night of scrumptious food, talking, and rounds of Exploding Kittens. Chavin drove us back to our Airbnb after all the fun.
24 August, Friday
Azrie, Chavin and I embarked on a day road trip to the Grampians, which took approximately three hours to reach by driving. I can’t emphasise enough how amazing Australia is, and one reason is because of our simple yet tasty lunch: two boxes of 24-piece nuggets for $10/box (!!!). I digress once again. I can’t help it, I’m a foodie. We were treated to beautiful sceneries on the way, and here’s one of the views that I captured.
Tumblr media
As if I wasn’t already in awe of the nature that surrounded us, the Grampians took my breath away again. As I mentioned in my previous post, I don’t particularly favour cities and prefer nature instead. The Grampians was just that. We stopped by an information centre to ask for potential sites to head to, and bought ice cream before going back to Chavin’s car. Within seconds of boarding, we caught sight of a field filled with kangaroos, and of course we stopped the car. We stayed for about 15 minutes and carried on with our journey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We decided to visit the Mackenzie Falls, Lake Wartook, and the Reeds Lookout (during sunset). No words can describe the beauty of these places, and I’m still in awe. My favourite place was Lake Wartook. We also saw an emu on the way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We left before it got too dark and drove to our dinner location, The Red Door Pizzeria. The three of us shared two pizzas: the Authentic Peking Duck and Shredded Beef and Mushroom. Dinner, like the rest of the meals we had in the country, was absolutely delectable. We headed back after our meal after our bellies were filled. On a side note, we didn’t exactly get to go stargazing on this trip as we planned to, but we managed to get clear views of the starry night sky to and fro The Red Door Pizzeria. We picked Gloria up on the way back to our Airbnb and played a few rounds of Exploding Kittens before calling it a night.
Tumblr media
25 August, Saturday
Our last day was spent shopping at the Direct Factory Outlets South Wharf. We checked out of our Airbnb and left our luggage at Chavin’s first thing in the morning. We took about 15 minutes to walk to the outlets after that. Before shopping, we had brunch at Citizen Cafe Bar, an eatery just outside the building. Azrie had pancakes with ice cream while I had Free Range Eggs Anyway, which was scrambled eggs on sourdough toast. I also had a bliss ball to go, which was a little snack ball coated in coconut and comprised cacao, nuts, and jam, I think. After a few hours of shopping, I got a few pieces of clothing – a Fila tank top and crop top and a Lorna Jane sports bra and mesh tights – while Azrie got a pair of Fila socks, alongside other gifts for our friends back in Singapore. On the way back to Chavin’s – yes, we walked again – we took photos at a 1970s classic photo booth. We were unprepared the first time, so we ended up taking another set of photos. We spotted a comic book store, All Star Comics, after that and popped in for a while before resuming our journey.
Tumblr media
That’s it for our Melbourne trip! It was really dreadful having to return to Singapore knowing that we could have visited more places if we didn’t fall sick, plus my new semester was to begin the day after touching down. Nevertheless, I had a great time in such a beautiful country with perfect company. I’m definitely going to visit Australia again, and possibly explore the other states too.

Monday 14th January 2019
We are no longer pedestrians, instead we are motorists courtesy of Mr Hertz. After the usual faffing around at their Melbourne airport office, they let us loose with a blue Toyota SUV. With Bruce the Sat Nav now set to Australia, we set off up the M1 freeway in the direction of Mornington peninsula for the first night of our tour to the Great Ocean Road and beyond. The peninsula is a boot shape bit of land which we shall travel down and then catch a ferry across Symonds Channel which essentially is the mouth to Port Phillip Bay in which Melbourne is the principal location. If you know what I mean. The peninsula was first occupied in the 1850s and grew especially in the 1870s when the railway came. We are staying in Bittern near Hastings. Hastings is thought to have either been named after the town in kent, or after Warren Hastings, a British imperial administrator. We are not sure which and nobody seems to care. The peninsula has had a quiet existence, being a Victorian holiday resort and later becoming a possible domitory town for Melbourne. Perhaps the most recent claim to fame though came in 1967 when the then prime minister of the whole of Australia, Harold Holt, disappeared whilst walking in the area of Cheviot beach. Despite a 3 week search, the biggest in Australia's history, his body was never recovered. As you might expect, conspiracy theories abound. One says because he was planning to pull Australian groups out of Vietnam, the CIA had him murdered. Others say it was due to Australia secretly emerging as an atomic power. The most colourful theory was that Holt was spying for the Chinese government and he climbed aboard a Chinese submarine off Cheviot beach and lived into the 1980s with his lover in France. That's the problem with a Chinese takeaway I guess!! Finally in 2005, 38 years after his disappearance, a coroner gave accidental drowning as the cause of death. Well that sorted that out then.
We have settled into a very nice B&B with large grounds with a pond fitted out with random ducks, for the night before continuing our trip in the morning. Lunch courtesy of Woolworths and dinner courtesy of the local fish and chip merchant. I had hake, Martine had flake. They don't do cod. Interestingly, Woolworths had a limited supply of hot snacks because it was hot outside. Odd logic that, but it was 35 degrees and getting hotter through the week. The forecasts are predicting a heat wave and fire alerts are at maximum.
