New Friends
Feeling a little excited I took a seat with the rest of the new students. There was a young guy, about the same age as me and a complete newbie. Next to him was an older man who had been playing swing music for a long time and wanted to expand his playing of different styles. Were there only three of us? I don’t remember there being anyone else, although the group seems small in hindsight. We all had sticks and were agog over the drum set and our new teacher who exhibited an understandably cool confidence.

First day. Little Grayson knocks out a C Major scale after being shown once. Even acknowledges the mistake at the end. #alabama #homeschool #drumline #backlotdrums #malletmonday #firstdrumlesson http://bit.ly/2Q1cqr6

My six month's worth of drum lessons really are the foundation on which everything I have done is built! #thingsIwouldtellyoungerAdi #ThanksBobNutt #rockshufflefunkdiscoswing #drumlessons #firstdrumlessons #sixmonthsofdrumlessons #drumfoundations

#whyIpracticetechnique I enjoy using the @tommyigoe Lifetime Warmup as the basis for my practice routine. Especially the basic warmup, although I am working on the intermediate and the advanced versions. When I first took drum lessons with my tutor, the aptly named Bob Nutt, he taught me all the basic rhythms I needed to get started playing with bands. Shuffle. Rock. Sixteen note. Disco open hi-hat. Swing. I can't thank the man enough which is more poignant as he died some years ago. He also taught three rudiments. Singles, doubles and paradiddles. My lessons with Bob ran to six months total but they had such an impact on me. However I have one regret. Looking back I wish I had spent more time practicing the three rudiments or had some kind of routine to follow. When I discovered the lifetime warmup I noticed that at its core where singles, doubles and paradiddles, the very rudiments Bob taught during my first drum lessons. Just goes to show. The lifetime warmup structures my technical practice and gives me a lifetime goal at the same time. The basic warmup especially covers those basic rudiments that Bob taught, one reason I like it. The other is that I like to use the basic warmup to prepare myself to play the intermediate. I can quickly run through it three or four times to prepare myself for the more taxing intermediate. I also speed the mp3 up to between 150bmp and 170 from its original 130. #lifetimewarmup #technicalpractice #practicepad #realfeel #drumsets #code #codedrumhead #codedrumheads #codedrumheadendorsee #codedrumheadsendorsee #teamcode #gigging #giggingdrummer #groove #groovedrummer #pocket #pocketdrummer #inthepocket #pocketplayer #passion #passionfordrumming #soul #funk #reggae #ludwigdrums #ludwigrocker #originaldrumlessons #firstdrumlessons
