Hal Gates = Henry Avery
So, I've seen the theory that Hal Gates = Henry Avery, and I laughed at it until I did the research.
And holy shit, it fits.
What made me start scratching my head was when I stumbled upon a second draft script for the pilot that is a little different from what aired. It straight up says that Hal Gates is in his 60s in Episode I/1715. For some reason, I figured him a bit younger, but since Mark Ryan was only 58 when the show started airing...it starts to make sense.
Henry Avery was (probably) born in 1659. He'd be 56 in 1715.
Short history: Henry (Hal?) Avery was a British-born sailor who spent some time in the Royal Navy as a master's mate, became a privateer, and then a pirate captain when the crew of his ship mutinied and elected him. Then he became the most successful pirate of his age, the "Arch Pirate," and the subject of the first-ever worldwide manhunt after only two years as a pirate captain.
Then he escaped with his loot around 1695, twenty years before Black Sails begins, never to be seen again.
But there are theories that he disappeared to New Providence Island.
(More on that below the cut). Isn't that fascinating? We don't know where Hal Gates comes from, but we know he's been around for quite awhile. He's the right age (practically spot on). Hornigold implies that Gates has been at sea for around 50 years, which would mean he first went to sea around 1665, give or take a little. The first mention of Every at sea is around 1671, but what's 5-6 years when you're rounding?
The Black Sails universe credits Avery/Every as one of the founders of the Nation of Thieves, saying "this is a place for free men," on New Providence Island. He's also the man who found Skeleton Island.
We know Hal Gates sailed on his crew and had his journals (his "prized possession," which he gave to Flint for safekeeping. Why give those to someone who was supposedly a minor member of his crew (someone who was "terrified Avery knew his name")? That doesn't add up very well. Why would Gates even have those journals?
"They say it started with a man named Henry Avery. Sailed into the port of Nassau, bribed the colonial governor to look past his sins, encamped his crew upon the beach, and thus began the pirate issue on New Providence Island." (Thomas Hamilton to James McGraw)
Avery vanishes into thin air, after supposedly giving Hal Gates his journals and leaving some of his crew on New Providence Island, including - presumably - Gates. Unless, of course, he is Hal "Gates." Then we've definitely seen him, the man who didn't really want to be a pirate captain until it was thrust upon him. That's a weird attitude, unless, of course, he's retired and is just going to see as a quartermaster because he missed the action?
More Avery/Every history beneath the cut.
Black Sails spells his name as Avery, though the common spelling is actually Every. So, what's his story?
Henry Every, also known as Henry Avery, Jack Avery, John Avery, Benjamin Bridgeman, or Long Ben, was the "Arch Pirate" or "King of Pirates" in his day.
He was probably born in Newton Ferrers, England (near Plymouth), in August 1659. His last name may have been spelled "Evarie" at this time.) Sometime between 1671 and 1689, he joined the Royal Navy under the name Henry Every and made it to the rank of master's mate before being discharged in 1690.
He also married to Dorothy Arther in 1690. Even in the navy, he was known as a family man, sending his money home instead of wasting it.
Then Every joined up with a new shipping company, and became first mate on a privateer warship, Charles II. The Spanish Expedition Shipping company was basically a bunch of English privateers who headed out to help Spain (then an English ally) hurt the French (never an English ally) in the West Indies. But Spain didn't deliver the promised letter of marque, failed to pay them, and left them sitting around as virtual prisoners. The crew of Charles II mutinied. Next you know, Every was unanimously elected captain and they changed the name of the ship to Fancy.
Over the next two years, Every and his crew embarked on a legendary series of raids that culminated in him commanding a squadron of pirate ships and taking a prize worth about £600,000 (about $135 million today). This was a 25 ship convoy owned by the Grand Mughal (Emperor), and it was the biggest prize ever taken by a pirate at the time.
The result? The first ever worldwide manhunt for one Henry Every. Britain's privy council and the East India Company offered a bounty of £1,000 (about $224,000 today) for his capture, plus a free pardon to informers.
It was due to his actions that Parliament declared pirates hostis humani generis ,or enemies of all mankind.
What happened to Every after this? What we know for sure is that he disappeared, forever to be the one pirate who got away scott free with his treasure. Sightings were reported for years, but none were reliable. Some say he died in poverty after squandering his treasure or being unable to sell it. But there's a strong theory that he disappeared in a place we all know very well: New Providence Island.
According to this theory, in Every and Fancy headed to St. Thomas and sold some of their treasure. Anchoring about 50 miles off New Providence Island, some of his men went to talk to the governor and ask leave for the crew to come to the island in exchange for hefty bribe. Their captain, "Henry Bridgeman" promised the governor a gift.
Every's crew spent months in the Bahamas and Fancy was stripped of everything valuable, ending up running aground and sinking, perhaps at the governor's orders. Eventually, the governor learned about the price on Every's head and put a warrant out for his arrest, but he seems to have tipped off the crew. Of 113 men, only 24 were captured (and 5 executed). Every was never seen again, having told his men multiple stories about where he intended to go.
And then he vanished, never to be seen again.
Unless he didn't.

New follower, please, if you're willing, I would love to hear more about Malyn? I love Tritons!!!
Oh gosh! I would love to tell you about her!
Malyn is a Circle of the Shepherd druid, and she is THE healer. Various party members have at one point or another said 'we would all have died if not for Malyn'. One key time I remember when we had three or so party members down and all the players were like 'well if we get Malyn back up then she can fix it'! Which can be alot of pressure but it also tends to be true lol
On quests, whenever there's a nature role for something land related, she just rolls really badly for some reason. Then as soon as it's water related, those high rolls show up. Basically, my bad dice rolls means it became canon Malyn just isn't as good with above the water surface nature
Recently she got married to her wife Evari, it was such a slow burn. On the first quest they were on together, after Evari's height got mentioned she screamed through me which hasn't happened for a character before. And then I didn't connect the dots of 'Oh she likes women' I just went 'wow! That was weird', and it took me another like week or so to put it together
Her circlet and leg pieces were originally made of drift wood and painted yellow, her mother's gave them to her when she left home. But then on a quest which contained a proving path, Malyn's circlet got magically changed / upgraded, and became the glass one you see on her now. She got replica leg pieces to match, so she still has the original ones of those. This is all magical glass btw so they aren't going to shatter or anything, for the ✨️design ✨️ you know?
Other cool things I can think of off the top of my head:
- on a quest once she knocked an undead dragon prone three times using the spell Tidal Wave while also keeping the party fully healed
- she's 4'11 so pretty short but tall for a Triton
- her favourite season is Spring
- she is represented by The Hermit tarot card
- she's a Virgo!
- her flower is the Lily of the Valley
I hope these facts were enjoyable for you!

Evaris & Gavvrok: Origins 💕
I need to ramble about my Married OCs SO INCREDIBLY BADLY so here we go!!!!!!!!
Evaris (he/him) is Vulcan (and a quarter Romulan), raised by a multi-species polycule with only one other Vulcan in it after his birth parents died, considered V’Tosh Ka’tur by most of his culture. Gavvrok (he/him, chah/ghah) is a Soul Warrior (transgender), broke out of his family’s restaurant industry to join Starfleet, took a break to protest the Klingon-Cardassian war, then returned shortly after. Neither of them really “fit in” to the cultures that bore them, and thus found comfort in each other.
Evaris Saved Gavvrok’s Life As A Meet Cute
They’ve married for three years, and bonded for four. They met five years ago on Khitomer Orbital 3 when Evaris prevented an assassination attempt on Gavvrok by a Gowron Loyalist for his activism on Qo’nos. The two became dear friends not long after.
Evaris’s Pon Farr
Almost year later, Evaris was put in the perilous position of entering his first Pon Farr with no bondmate to speak of. Gavvrok went out of his way to look for answers, and found himself to be the safest and most compatible option aboard. Not only as a Klingon (strong enough to physically handle Evaris’s volatile state), but as the closest person emotionally to Evaris aboard. He essentially lured Evaris to the holodeck and convinced him to let him help. Using all of his Tangqa’ training, Klingon strength and warrior’s training, and his deep affection for his friend. The both of them survived, and remained Bonded afterward.
Logic, Honor, and Tal-shaya
Becoming increasingly worried about Gavvrok’s safety, he attempts to teach Gavvrok Tal-shaya, the deadliest of Vulcan martial arts. This greatly upsets Gavvrok, they had a massive fight (both verbal and physical sparring) over it. Gavvrok called him “an honorless skulking cold-hearted puppet master”, Evaris called him “antiquated and illogical” and revealed he had a lot more prejudice toward Klingons than he had realized. Daring claim maybe the more common interpretation of “the Klingon way” was the right one occasionally, and that Gav didn’t have the strength to stick to it. They wouldn’t speak for weeks, couldn’t even be in the same room because of the Bond. With no means of unbinding themselves, they decided to confront each other. The air was cleared, apologies (mostly Evaris’s) were made. They went on to discuss how names like “Surak” and “Kahless” and words like “honor” and “logic” can be used to justify just about anything. Gavvrok has just as complicated a relationship with honor as Evaris does with logic, a relationship that has made them outcasts on their own worlds. Gavvrok willingly learns Tal-shaya, but only as a test of his own sense of Honor not to use it. Evaris reluctantly agrees, feeling like he has somehow tainted an otherwise peaceful soul.
The Ridiculously Massive Wedding
Bonded for a year, they decided it was time to tie the knot, a blend between Vulcan and Klingon marital traditions. The party was HUGE, not even because either of them are particularly popular. Between Evaris’s family being a polycule plus all of his siblings (and nieces and nephews) and extended family from that and Gavvrok’s big ol’ Klingon family, and all their friends on the station. They held it on Khitomer just to prevent causing a fire hazard on the station. It was confused for a diplomatic meeting by a few disgruntled ambassadors and embassy employees. The most drama that came out of it was one of Gavvrok’s cousins being a little too into the idea of Kalifee but also having NO IDEA how it works so she didn’t end up causing a diplomatic incident.

I am so GLAD you asked, I will soon be playing the Chief of Espionage aboard the USS Spectre for a Star Trek Tabletop RPG taking place during the post Wrath of Khan Star Trek films
Allow me to introduce to you, my son
Lt. Cmdr. E’shk T’zr Evaris!
He’s gay as the Fourth of July, he has an ex-husband (a la stupid arranged marriage/Pon Farr customs) and post RPG campaign (as I adapted this OC for the game) he will have a Klingon Federation CMO husband named Gavvrok. At the time of the campaign he’s only had one Pon Farr.
He is a hardcore Captain Sulu fanboy, so much so in fact, he has followed in his icon’s footsteps and mastered the art of fencing (and a smaller proclivity for botany) as his central means of martial combat.
Although he rarely says it out loud, he does consider himself V’Tosh Ka’tur, in a non-derogatory sense. Mostly because he cannot get himself to fit into the popular and merciless understandings of Surak’s teachings. He has instead poured over the Kir’Shara himself, and follows his own path in what he considers adherence to Surak’s lessons. Though his outward manner and the way he says things is still extremely Vulcan. He does not shy away from expressing enthusiasm for things.
Emotions he still shies away from in spite of embracing a V’Tosh Ka’tur way of thinking, are anger and sadness. This manifests itself in his being averse to hand to hand combat, and by proxy touch in general. Not only is touch a more intense and complex experience for Vulcans than other races, but for him it is especially difficult. In fact, if he is forced into a situation where he must brawl, he often finds himself completely losing control, and could potentially beat someone to death quickly and without mercy if another officer isn’t there to stop him. So he greatly prefers his enemies at phaser or rapier’s length. Lest he be doomed to locking himself up in his quarters and angsting over his failures as a Vulcan.
In the same vein as being a Sulu fan, and it’s essentially a chicken or the egg argument which fixation came first, Evaris is obsessed with pirates and all things pirate related. He knows his favorite ancient Terran novel, Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, front to back and will quote it often. Though an amateur of the Ka’athrya (the Vulcan Lute) he’s memorized many sea and Star shanties from across the galaxy and will perform them often in the mess hall.
Though he is a spy by trade, he’s an actor at heart, and considers every undercover operation a performance. Frequently passing for other races, Romulan being the simplest cover, his specialty is Carousing. Carousing involves garnering information through drinking, gambling, and flirting. All three of which he embraces fully, enjoying games like Poker, flexing his knowledge of interspecies courtship rituals, and chocolate flavored imbibements.
Perhaps through his combined love of piracy and new experiences, Evaris is quite partial to extreme sports from a variety of planets, especially those that involve water and/or snow. Snow especially, snowboarding is particularly appealing to him, as are the more mundane recreational activities involving snow such as snowball fights and the crafting of snow forts.
He has two Sehlats at home, Hawkins and Silver.
ive completely lost track of the original post asking about this so please. if this post happens across your dash, tell me about your ocs :) you can put them on this post or if youd prefer to use anon or just want to use an ask for some reason, thats cool too :)

Assessment of the World Health Organization’s Social Media Methods (Final)
The World Health Organization (WHO) works within the United Nations to manage international health. Their goals include promoting health, keeping the world safe, and serving the vulnerable. They work for universal health coverage, protection from health emergencies, and for people to have better health and well-being. (World Health Organization)
In terms of the World Health Organization’s social media presence, they “currently engage social media subscribers on 11 channels: Twitter, Facebook, Google+, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, Storify, Foursquare, Vine, Ello, and Periscope” (World Health Organization, 2019).
WHO has a Facebook page with 4 million likes, a Twitter account with 4.7 million followers, an Instagram account with 1.5 million followers, and a YouTube channel with 94 000 subscribers. It is crucial for health organizations to integrate social media into their work in order to build connections, share discoveries and develop credibility as leaders (Evariant, 2015). Each of these outlets provides the World Health Organization with a space to educate and promote the work they are doing.
The World Health Organization frequently posts on Instagram and Facebook, with Instagram posts being published almost every other day and Facebook posts every day. Most of their posts are infographics providing information on health science or photos of their work in action. Taking advantage of being able to post up to 60-second videos, the WHO sporadically produces them to maintain consistency. Videos are engaging and can track engagement from followers with their view counts. The platform’s full potential is used through Instagram stories, highlights, and Instagram TV (IGTV) features.
(World Health Organization, 2019)
The main website has a plethora of information regarding health topics, news, and country-specific resources. It is therefore beneficial that their Facebook and Instagram pages link their website, allowing followers to find more information on topics they are interested in. The WHO’s Twitter and Facebook accounts use photos and infographics to catch the attention of followers, condensing information with visuals that pique the interest of users. All of the organization’s Instagram and Twitter posts contain at least one hashtag, which helps posts gain traction.
While there is less engagement on YouTube, the videos are posted in various languages, which aids in reaching a wider audience. Facebook posts do not get repetitive because they have engaging captions with various attached media. Their main audience appears to be millennials and adults. The language used is relatively easy to understand by most people; multimedia is often combined with text posts and emoji’s, which makes consuming information easier for younger audiences. Most adults appear to be Facebook users whereas both teenagers and adults appear to use Instagram. Twitter also appeals to the millennial demographic (West, 2019), so it is no surprise that the WHO prioritizes posting on these three platforms.
(World Health Organization, 2019)
The World Health Organization does have areas of their social media activity that can be improved on. Firstly, they should begin targeting Gen Z, as “45% of teens now say they are online almost constantly” (Pruett, 2018). By targeting this audience, they are ensuring that they will have a loyal and long-term following base. Further, they do not reply to any of their comments, which shows they do not prioritize supporter engagement. Also, replying to comments on their page, as well as commenting on other account’s photos will further their audience reach due to Instagram’s algorithm. This is essential during the first 60 minutes after posting a photo, as Instagram will boost their post and show it to more of their followers (Angie, 2019). Some of their captions have grammatical errors which can give followers negative impressions of the organization. There are multiple posts on WHO’s Instagram account where their followers comment on the grammatical errors in their captions. As an international organization, this is something that requires immediate attention and correction. WHO is an established and internationally recognized organization that is an agency of the United Nations, because of this, ensuring proper grammar on every post should be their top priority.
(World Health Organization’s Instagram, 2019)
As well, infographics should be formatted differently for each platform since it can be less engaging if the overall design is difficult to read. The WHO should also engage with their audiences more, as it would help in growing engagement by hosting live streams, polls, etc. Additionally, their content on Instagram could be improved by using photos of their work. Simple clip art images may be skimmed past as it does not have any information on it – relying on the caption alone may not be enough to keep a user’s attention.
(World Health Organization, 2019)
Although infographics can be informative, the format does not suit Instagram as it makes the text small. If viewers cannot read the post with ease, it is highly unlikely they will take the time to decipher it. Below is an example of an infographic that has numerous words that are hard to read due to size. If WHO wants to continue to post infographics such as this, they could separate them into smaller images and make use of Instagram’s multiple photo’s per post option, meaning their followers would not have to zoom in to read the text.
(World Health Organization, 2019)
The World Health Organization’s YouTube channel has very little engagement, with an average of 50 views per video even though they have almost 100 000 subscribers. For people that are interested in the WHO, they choose to follow their work on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, instead of YouTube. Another improvement that the World Health Organization should make to their social media presence is to answer questions from their followers. Creating a space for conversation establishes a personal connection to audiences (Ferris, 2017). As an organization that works hard to solve worldwide health issues, they need support from their followers but must also educate them at the same time. When questions are not answered, people may assume the WHO is trying to hide something or is not qualified to answer questions. At the very least, the WHO should direct commenters to their website for more details.

*Pre-existing qualifications sufficient to transfer to Starfleet Medical orientation/residency upon first outgoing assignment.
Service Record: Ensign, Starfleet Medical Orientation aboard U.S.S. Boudica (2371), Lieutenant Junior Grade, Psychologist aboard U.S.S. Cornwall (2375), Lieutenant, Psychiatric Consultant aboard Khitomer Orbital 3 (2379), Lieutenant Commander., Chief Medical Officer aboard U.S.S. Tubman (2380)
Background Story: Born in the Klingon capital to middle social caste family on Qo'nos. Specialized in "Clarity by Combat", a Klingon originated practice of combat based physical and/or talk therapy dependent on specific styles and disciplines, first Medical officer to officially apply that methodology in a Starfleet capacity. Took a two year leave of absence to formally protest the Klingon-Cardassian War on Qo'nos. As well as to undergo Soul Warrior Ritual for gender transition. Married Lieutenant Commander Evaris while stationed aboard Khitomer Orbital 3. Currently assigned as CMO to Amnesty Class ship U.S.S. Tubman.
Personality Profile: One of the few Klingon Starfleet Officers whose significance is not inherently tied to their political position in the Klingon feudalistic caste system. This is strongly reflected in the officer's general humility, unusual anecdotes on Klingon Honor, and utter disaffection toward inter-House power dynamics. This has been a double edged sword in his Starfleet career. He was diplomatically compelled to temporarily step down as a Starfleet officer during the Klingon-Cardassian war due to his political activism and propensity toward Klingon "peace-punk" counterculture. Reinstated, Gavvrok continues to serve as one of the most well-renowned members of Starfleet Medical currently in service.
Physical Profile: Dr. Gavvrok is of average height and weight for a Klingon male. Unusually light eye coloring and forehead ridge curvature. The tattoo under his right eye signifies completion of Monastery of Tangqa' residency. Piercing allowed by Cultural Permittance Dress Code Clause 23-A as (optional) indicator of Soul Warrior status.
Special Notes: Dr. Gavvrok and Lt. Cmdr. Evaris have joint ownership of two legally registered therapy animals who are considered honorary Starfleet Ensigns. Ensign Hawkins the Vulcan Sehlat, and Ensign Shirlee the Klingon Targ.

The World Health Organization frequently post on Instagram and Facebook, with Instagram posts being published almost every other day and Facebook posts every day.
It is therefore beneficial their Facebook and Instagram pages link their website, allowing followers to find more information on topics they are interested in.
Further, replying to comments on their page, as well as commenting on other account’s photos will further their audience reach due to Instagram’s algorithm.
The WHO should also engage with their audiences more – aside from replying to comments and questions, it would help in growing engagement by hosting live streams, polls, etc. Additionally, their content on Instagram could be improved by using photos of their work. Simple clip art images may be skimmed past as it does not have any information on it – relying on the caption alone may not be enough to keep a user’s attention.
(World Health Organization, 2019) Although infographics can be informative, the format does not suit Instagram as it makes the text small.
An improvement that the World Health Organization should make to their social media presence is to answer questions from their followers.

Brandon raised an eyebrow, mirroring his father unconsciously. “We didn’t even know you an’ Mr Evaris before a couple weeks ago. How...how can I be sure?”
He knew Miss Tilly was trying. Really. But Mother did the first few months they had Sean, too. After that, her attention switched back to her real son. Brandon had always felt a little guilty for enjoying that attention, and now...now the universe put him in a position to pay for it, he supposed. Because after a few months, Miss Tilly would stop trying, and focus on Sean.
And if Da was still busy....where did that leave him?
Miss Tilly? What if Da doesn't have time for me anymore? Sean's got you and another dad.
The question came as a definite shock to Tilly, hearing Petyr’s own son say such things. It was logical that the boy was concerned, considering everything that had happened in the past few weeks. She paused in her work, as she’d been cooking supper, turned, and crouched down so she was on eye level with Brandon.
“Brandon, honey, your father will always have time for you. Sometimes he may be a little busy, but he will make time, I’m sure of that.” She smiled softly. “And you have Evaris and me, too. Same as Sean.”
