🟠 Erev Shabbat News SUMMARY - Friday afternoon
ISRAEL REALTIME - Connecting to Israel in Realtime
Erev Shabbat - Parshat (Torah Portion) Va’etchanan - Deuteronomy 3:23 - Moses tells the people of Israel how he implored G‑d to allow him to enter the Land of Israel, but G‑d refused, instructing him instead to ascend a mountain and see the Promised Land.
▪️SMUGGLING ACROSS the Egyptian border has been increasing, in spite of the advanced sensing border fence. Most caught are drugs.
▪️US STATE DEPT APPROVES ARTILLERY SHELLS sale to Israel of $61 million worth.
▪️THE RAMPAGE STORY - mostly lies? (About the story of Israelis ‘rampaging’ through a Palestinian village.) Here’s the other side we received, no way to know reality at this time:
Last night an Israeli car was attacked by the Arab village of Jit with fireworks and stones via a group of Arab rioters on the main road.
The driver called local Israelis and the IDF for help.
The Israelis together with the IDF drove off the rioters, with the rioters responding with Molotov cocktails as they were driven back - lighting a number of their own community cars and houses on fire from their response.
As the crowd of rioters grew, the IDF soldiers fired - killing 1 and wounding another rioter. (Noting the 1 killed has been identified online as an active terrorist.)
We heard of a rampage of “settlers” and see pictures of cars on fire, but no context was provided.
▪️UN ASKS FOR VACCINATION CEASEFIRE.. The UN is asking for a 7-day ceasefire in Gaza to vaccinate 640,000 children against polio.
▪️HAMAS EXECUTES.. Gaza sources: Hamas executed yesterday and today, in the center of the Gaza Strip, a number of collaborators with Israel. Noting current IDF leadership REFUSES to create any form of military administration in Gaza.
▪️INFLATION IN ISRAEL.. The July index rose by 0.6%, inflation climbed to an annual rate of 3.2%.

In September 2023, I had my first solo art show. It was titled "Postcards from Japan" and featured hand-drawn and/or painted postcards of places I've been, things I've seen. Many of the postcards were connected to essays I wrote for my Japanese teacher over the preceding 2 1/2 years. Along one wall of the gallery, I displayed several of the essays I'd written. Visitors asked me if I had a collection of the essays available for sale or online somewhere, but I had prepared neither! All I had were prints of a few of the postcards.
I started compiling scans of the postcards and matching them to essays in order to have a book printed, but after nearly a year I'm still not satisfied with any of those ideas. So, I've decided to share them here. I hope you enjoy them.
セミの歌1・Song of the Cicadas 1
The “sound of summer” is the cicada’s song. Not the voices of children or the sound of fireworks exploding. When I hear the cicada’s song, I really feel like summer has begun.
In the US, it’s a little bit rare to find a cicada shell. When I was a kid, I felt lucky when I found one. In Japan, there are so many cicadas every year, but that’s not the case where I’m from. Every few years, a wave of cicadas will crawl out of the ground. Since I came to Japan, I’ve realized that finding a cicada shell isn’t anything special, but I’ve really come to love the cicada’s song.
When American news reports, “This year a large number of cicadas will emerge from the ground,” everyone groans, “Oh, no.” I used to think the same, but now I don’t. At the end of May this year, I spotted my first cicada shell of the year. I thought to myself, “Yes! Soon I can hear the cicada’s song! Not long now and summer will be here.” It’s a really happy time of year for me, because I feel like this is truly summer.

HAPPY FIRST OF JULY!
Truckin' right along. July is a very summery month in Merrock, with parties, a gala, warm weather, what more could you want?! We just want to go over a few important things, as usual, get everyone on the same page, let you know what to expect this month, and give you some behind the scenes details of things we're working on!
HAPPENING IN JULY!
June 30 - July 8 : SUMMER BASH -- our annual carnival and or summer celebration; taking place near Town Hall, the event serves as a major charity boost for emergency responders, as well.
July 14 : ELDER EMO SHOW -- a concert by Unknown Destination happening in an abandoned warehouse downtown, with an after party at The Mirage!
July 22 : CHARITY GALA -- our annual charity gala is happening this month, as well, with a theme of Enchanted Forest! all adults are invited, and we can't wait to see your looks.
JULY'S MINI-EVENTS!
July 4 : FOURTH OF JULY -- a fireworks celebration around Merrock, full of lights and sounds and good times!
EXTRA BIT OF FUN!
We have a new, fun task for you this month! This one was inspired by an existing prompt that I found and tweaked to be more generalized. It does pertain some pretty heavy subjects (and may even have triggering subject material), so you do not need to answer all of them if anything makes you uncomfortable. However, you can check it out HERE. This is for July only, but should not be done in place of activity!
IMPORTANT NOTES!
as usual, be sure that you're familiar with our rules! there are no drastic changes, just little nitpicky things, but it's good to be aware and up to date. a little refresher never hurt anyone.
we have updated the application process in the tiniest, miniscule amount -- now when you submit your background/bio, we are asking that you let us know about pets/developments/schooling so we can update those pages, as well!
although we are remaining lenient with our two week activity requirement before unfollows, and doing checks twice a month (still once in the beginning/end, once midway), we are going to be tightening up on warnings. those inactive for one week, not replying to starters, only replying to writers/characters they are close with, or only doing the bare minimum to avoid check will be given warnings. receiving a lot of warnings will result in your removal from the group. please be fair with activity. we're working on taking it a bit more seriously, and hope you do, too, while still making this a fun environment!
when you need something from admins that that requires us to be online (page update, hiatus request, etc.), please utilize the ask box (it's much easier for me to keep track of what needs done)! otherwise, our messages are open to help you or chat.
BEHIND THE SCENES!
August has a few fun events in the pipeline! We'll be seeing our annual yard sale and car cruise-in, as well as a volleyball tournament. but the big one (best for interactions, imo) is our beach party!
and of course there will be some mini events, too, like lighthouse day, and school starting back up.
per usual, we'll be doing acceptances on Mondays and Thursdays in July, hours may vary, but mods are typically around from 5-10PM; as we've been hovering around cap, if we reach cap, we have made the decision we will accept new writers/characters based on diversity and WC pick-ups.
oh, aaand! we've added a bunch of new locations for you to check out. make sure you've read this post to catch up!
HAPPY JULY, MERROCKITES!

gah this week has it out for me😭 i wasn’t able to get the merch i wanted, am missing yoongi, and now in the same week, i somehow got sick during my week in cali??? it’s okay though because the content that we got today filled me with so much joy. i love seeing yoongi smile and happy, and i loved that a bunch of army’s who won the video call let him know how much he means to them and that they’ll wait however long for bts to come back🥺
also!! let me tell you about this dream that i had about yoongi last night: so somehow i was also sick in my dream too and i had a sore throat, so yoongi brought me warm tea to help me feel better. then he drove us to my hometown and he met my mom and some of my siblings and she made him my comfort dish (idk if you like viet food but if you do, defs eat bun bo bue!! it’s my favorite dish ever :)) and he really liked it! he got along well with my family and was smiling and laughing a lot. AND THEN!! there was a firework show near us and we could see them more clearly on this hill at a park that was nearby and yoongi and i decided to go check it out and he held my hand the whole time that we were walking there. then once we got to the hill, he confessed how he felt and i told him that i felt the same way and we hugged each other super tight and then he turned me around and had his arms around my shoulders and was resting his chin my head while we were watching the fireworks😭😭 it felt lowkey so 3tanesk with the fireworks and i was just so in disbelief that i had a dream about yoongi (that’s the first time he’s come into my dreams) and i was shook that it was so wholesome and cute?? hehe now i’m gonna go rewatch those clips from the movie night and video call and try NOT to be a delulu😭😭
-🥮
Oh mooncake, hello babe🥹💕 first off: how are you feeling? Are you feeling better? I’m devastated about the merch situation too but we can try for online sales.. even though shipping will cut right through me.
The dream sounds fantastic and magical holy shit!! What a scenario.. a bunch of scenarios actually😳 It’s a fairy tale wrapped in a dream and the fireworks just made me so nostalgic😭😭
YESSS watch the clips!! Feel better soon, love<333

BALITANG NASYONAL: 'BAN Toxics' urges National and Local Government to enforce Firecracker Ban, ahead of New Year Celebrations
BINONDO, MANILA -- New Year celebration is almost approaching as toxic watchdog group 'BAN Toxics' harped against early sale of prohibited firecrackers as it called on the national government and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to enforce a strict ban. The unsanitary point of activities needed urgent action for safety reasons, particularly the children and teens, especially during the new-born celebratory of festivities.
In the recent market monitoring, BAN Toxics' BT Patrollers documented the sale of several prohibited firecrackers, specifically the infamous '5-Star' and 'Piccolo', which are known significant culprits in firecracker-related injuries. These firecrackers were sold by ambulant vendors in 'Marcelino Rafael de Santos Street' in Divisoria of Binondo, Manila, National Capital Region; and the cost varied from PHP120 (U$D2.05) for a pack of '5-Star', while 'Piccolo' costs PHP180-200 (U$D3.08 to U$D3.42). The peril that these chattels bring is enormous and calls for attention particularly, on the part of children who are the most vulnerable victims of fireworks, used in more significant events of celebrations when improperly used.
BAN Toxics is urging the national government, including local authorities here in Central Visayas, Negros Island Region and Dumaguete City to take a more decisive action on banning the manufacture, selling and use of firecrackers. The non-government organization is highly calling for a total ban to avert injuries and protect the health of children. 'Mr. Thony Dizon', who is a Campaign and Advocacy Officer for BAN Toxics stated: "We call on DILG Secretary 'Jonvic Catibayan Remulla' to support a 'total ban' on firecrackers to reduce firecracker-related injuries in the country". The group further asks local government units (LGUs) to pass an ordinance supportive of this call for a ban, with the implementation of rules at the community level.
The impacts of firecracker sales on children and teen's safety cannot be overstated. The Department of Health's Fireworks-Related Injury Surveillance (DOH-FRIS) cited that the last New Year's celebration in 2023 marked a scary increase of 98% when comparing this year's fireworks-related injuries at 609 against the previous year's report of 307 injuries. The rate speaks to the urgent necessity for preventive approaches. BAN Toxics postulates that besides having the children at risk, the prohibited firecrackers expose them to chemicals that endanger their health in the long run.
Against this backdrop, in legality of national issues, BAN Toxics is urging PNP to step up on-site monitoring and seizure of prohibited firecrackers. The NGO calls for more policemen presence in key market areas, particularly ones with very lax vendors of the products, thereby thwarting illegal sales of harmful fireworks by the vices. Dizon underscored the call for safety in their community and added: "Children have the right to a safe and healthy environment; we must prioritize their needs and conditions and protect them from firecracker-related injuries and toxic chemical exposure", he concluded.
As the New Year's celebrations near, the need for prohibiting firecrackers is more urgent than ever, which subject for the approval of our Philippine president 'Bongbong Marcos Jr.' (PBBM). BAN Toxics stays steadfast in its advocacy for a safer New Year celebration, calling on government and people to take necessary steps to limit firecracker risks. The NGO hopes that it will be able to discourage lots of people from purchasing and using these dangerous items -- in order to foster a safer environment for all, especially so they can look for better alternatives and safer ones for the youngest members in our society.

Once again, fireworks are banned over Diwali. Gov can't stop farm fires in Punjab and Haryana that are much bigger, go on for weeks and easier to spot, but will insist on stopping kids from using fireworks that are smaller and last only for a few days!
Punjabi Farmers are not stopped but Hindus are threatened with fines and jail. Lets not forget this 'pollution' issue is with Delhi and not really present in other parts of India. Yet, the ban is all across India. This is because Punjabi farmers constitute a 'vote bank' but Hindus don't.
THIS is how WOKE ideology is being used to silence and restrict Hindus in their own country! Yet, most Hindus are too confused to even realise this!

The biggest of stories came to the small city of Butler. Here’s how its newspaper met the moment - Information Today Online https://www.merchant-business.com/the-biggest-of-stories-came-to-the-small-city-of-butler-heres-how-its-newspaper-met-the-moment/?feed_id=138318&_unique_id=669cc5e3820f5 #GLOBAL - BLOGGER BLOGGER BUTLER, Pa. (AP) — When gunshots echoed at the Trump rally where she was working, Butler Eagle reporter Irina Bucur dropped to the ground just like everyone else. She was terrified. She hardly froze, though.Bucur tried to text her assignment editor, through spotty cell service, to tell him what was going on. She took mental notes of what the people in front and behind her were saying. She used her phone to take video of the scene. All before she felt safe standing up again. Kurt Slater, pressman at the Butler Eagle newspaper, pulls papers as they come off the press, Thursday, July 18, 2024, in Butler, Pa. (AP Photo/Matt Slocum)When the world’s biggest story came to the small western Pennsylvania hamlet of Butler a week ago, it didn’t just draw media from everywhere else. Journalists at the Eagle, the community’s resource since 1870 and one that struggles to survive just like thousands of local newspapers across the country, had to make sense of chaos in their backyard — and the global scrutiny that followed.Photographer Morgan Phillips, who stood on a riser in the middle of a field with Trump’s audience that Saturday evening, kept on her feet and kept working, documenting history. After Secret Service officers hustled the former president into a waiting car, the people around her turned to shout vitriol at the journalists.A few days later, Phillips’ eyes welled with tears recounting the day.“I just felt really hated,” said Phillips, who like Bucur is 25. “And I never expected that.”Mobilizing in the most harrowing of situations“I’m very proud of my newsroom,” said Donna Sybert, the Eagle’s managing editor.Having put a coverage plan in place, she had escaped for a fishing trip nearby with her family. A colleague, Jamie Kelly, called to tell her something had gone terribly wrong and Sybert rushed back to the newsroom, helping to update the Eagle’s website until 2 a.m. Sunday.Bucur’s assignment had been to talk to community members attending the rally, along with those who set up a lemonade stand on the hot day and people who parked cars. She’d done her reporting and settled in to text updates of what Trump was saying for the website. The shooting changed everything. Bucur tried to interview as many people as she could. Slightly dazed after authorities cleared the grounds, she forgot where she had parked. That gave her more time for reporting.“Going into reporter mode allowed me to distract myself from the situation a little bit,” Bucur said. “Once I got up, I wasn’t thinking at all. I was just thinking I needed to interview people and get the story out because I was on deadline.”She and colleagues Steve Ferris and Paula Grubbs were asked to collect their reporting and impressions for a story in the Eagle’s special, eight-page wraparound printed edition on Monday.“The first few gunshots rang out like fireworks,” they wrote. “But when they continued, people in the crowd at the Butler Farm Show venue dropped to the ground: a mother and father told their children to crouch down. A young man hunched over in the grass. Behind him, a woman started to pray.”The special edition clearly resonated in Butler and beyond. Extra copies are being offered for sale for $5 in the Eagle’s lobby. That’s already a bargain. On eBay, Sybert said, she’s seen them going for up to $125.A small newspaper struggling to endureBeyond its status as a local newspaper, the Eagle is an endangered species. It has resisted ownership by a large chain, which have often stripped news outlets bare. The Eagle has been owned by the same family since 1903; its patriarch, Vernon Wise, is now 95. Fifth-generation family member Jamie Wise Lanier drove up from Cincinnati
this week to congratulate the staff on a job well done, general manager Tammy Schuey said.Six editions are printed each week, and a digital site has a paywall that was lowered for some of the shooting stories. The Eagle’s circulation is 18,000, Schuey said, with about 3,000 of that digital. The United States has lost one-third of its newspapers since 2005 as the Internet chews away at once-robust advertising revenue. An average of 2.5 newspapers closed each week in 2023, according to a study by Northwestern University. The majority were in small communities like Butler. The Eagle abandoned a newsroom across town in 2019, consolidating space in the building where its printing press is housed. It has diversified, starting a billboard company and taking on extra printing jobs. It even stores the remnants of a long-shuttered local circus and allows residents to visit. The Eagle has about 30 employees, although it’s now short two reporters and a photographer. Cabinets housing old photographs lie among the clutter of desks in the newsroom, with a whiteboard that lists which staff members will be on weekend call. Its staff is a mix of young people like Bucur and Phillips, who tend to move on to larger institutions, and those who put down roots in Butler. Sybert has worked at the Eagle since 1982. Schuey was initially hired in 1991 to teach composing room employees how to use Macs.“This is a challenging business,” Schuey said. “We’re not out of the woods yet.”Local understanding makes a huge differenceWhen a big story comes to town, with the national and international journalists that follow it, local news outlets are still a precious and valued resource. The Eagle knows the terrain. It knows the local officials. Smart national reporters who “parachute” into a small community that suddenly makes news know to seek out local journalists. Several have reached out to the Eagle, Schuey said.Familiarity helps in other ways. Bucur found people at the rally who were suspicious of national reporters but answered questions from her, and the same is true for some authorities. She has tapped her network of Facebook friends for reporting help.Such foundational trust is common. Many people in small towns have more faith in their community newspapers, said Rick Edmonds, the media business analyst at the Poynter Institute.“It’s just nice to support the locals,” said Jeff Ruhaak, a trucking company supervisor who paused during a meal at the Monroe Hotel to discuss the Eagle’s coverage. “I think they did a pretty good job covering it for their size.”The Eagle has another advantage as well: It isn’t going anywhere when the national reporters leave. The story won’t end. Hurt people need to recover and investigations will determine who is responsible for a would-be assassin being able to get a shot at Trump. In short: responsible journalism as civic leadership in harrowing moments.“Our community went through a traumatic experience,” Schuey said. “I was there. We have some healing to do, and I think the newspaper is a critical piece in helping guide the community through this.”So, too, must people at the Eagle heal, as Phillips’ raw emotions attest. Management is trying to give staff members some days off, perhaps with the help of journalists in surrounding communities.Bucur said she would hate to see Butler turned into a political prop, with the assassination being used as some sort of rallying cry. The divisiveness of national politics had already seeped into local meetings and staff members have felt the tension.Sybert and Schuey look at each other to try and remember what was the biggest story that Butler Eagle journalists have worked on. Was it a tornado that killed nine back in the 1980s? Some particularly bad traffic accident? Trump paid an uneventful campaign visit in 2020. But there’s no question what tops the list now.Despite the stress of the assassination attempt, covering it has been a personal revelation for the soft-spoken Bucur, who grew up 30 miles (48.
2 kilometers) south in Pittsburgh and studied psychology in college. Her plans changed when she took a communications course and loved it.“This,” she said, “was a moment I told myself that I think I’m cut out for journalism.”___David Bauder writes about media for the AP. Follow him at http://twitter.com/dbauder.“BUTLER, Pa.
