Books I Just Finished: The Long Way To A Small Angry Planet

I decided I wanted to work my way through the Hugo Ballot nominees, and started with this one because the sequel is up for best novel. (I later found out I could have just read A Closed and Common Orbit first, since it’s apparently standalone, but WHATEVER, I was already halfway through the book by then.) This book was basically recced to me as “Firefly with femslash” and well. Kind of? But not really.

There is femslash, because one of the human protagonists gets in a friends with benefits arrangement with a lizard alien lady. (They’re pretty cute.) And it is like Firefly, in that it centers around a mix and match crew on the same ship, trying to get by and do their jobs and not drive each other nuts. But unlike Firefly, 1) Some of those people are actually aliens, with vastly different cultural values, 2)They’re not thieves or anything. Their job is perfectly legal, just dangerous. And fucking awesome. They rip holes in space! That’s fucking metal! (I note this because one of the things I really enjoyed about Firefly is that it’s about a band of small-time failboat criminals, and I was kind of disappointed to find that the crew of the Wayfarer are on the up and up. It’s fine! I just wasn’t expecting it.) The book is pretty plotless; and I really don’t mean that in a bad way. While there was kind of an overarching story, it’s really more like a series of short episodes or vignettes, all focused on the crew and how they relate to each other and the world around them. And surprisingly, in spite of the slice-of-life style storytelling, it is a pageturner. I finished the book in basically a day. (Technically I read 4% of the book the night before before I went to sleep, but it counts as a day, damn it!) The aliens were pretty cool, the action was fun, and I loved the characters and getting to learn more about them. ALTHOUGH I felt like the book really wanted me to like Kizzy more than I did. And I did like her, but man, sometimes I would just internally cringe because I felt like the book was pushing her on me. So loud! And spunky! Isn’t she cool! Isn’t she just like the cool big sister you never had but always wished for! Look at her snack on her fireshrimp in dirty overalls as she jokes loudly about sex in the kitchen! She felt less like a person and more like a character, in a way the others really didn’t. I’ve read some other reviews that said some people had this same problem with all of the main characters, but for me, it was just her that felt too try-hard. I think it also struggled in places with making exposition feel natural. Most times it comes across fine; Rosemary acts as the audience stand-in a lot, since she’s the newest member of the ship and has the least experience. So other characters have to explain things to her, and we get to learn about the world along with her. Other times, it feels really shoehorned in. Like, for example, the way we gets Jenk’s mom’s whole backstory. One of them makes an offhand comment about his mom being one of those hippie Earth cultists, and then Sissix and Kizzy end up going on for pages telling her story to Rosemary. And it’s interesting, and you learn a lot about the world and Jenks from it, but it feels weird that these characters spend this much time walking around talking about their coworkers mom, just so the reader can learn this information. Some of the stuff with Sissix and the way her race communicates felt the same. But I really liked it! My only problem is that the more I hear about A Closed and Common Orbit, the less eager I am to read it, because it doesn’t center around the same group of people. (Except for Lovelace, I suppose, but it isn’t the same Lovelace so it’s not like it matters.) I have so many questions! What’s gonna happen with Corbin and Ohan’s weird semi-friendship? Is Jenks gonna be okay? Are Ashby and Pei gonna bang in every room of their respective ships? I know the crew will most likely pop in at some point to answer at least some of this, and it will probably be just as fun to read about Pepper and New Lovelace. I just wanna know nooooow.
