pairing: firefighter!JJ Maybank x fem!reader 

summary: an AU in which JJ is a firefighter and goes on a rather interesting call (2k)

a/n: my submission for day one of @surftrips obx writing week! unfortunately this is the only day i’ll be able to participate in due to things happening in my personal life right now but definitely check out everyone else participating in the challenge!! <3

Being a firefighter in a big city looked different from day to day. Sometimes it looked like fighting a multi-story blaze engulfing a skyscraper downtown. Sometimes it meant running drills on the apparatus floor all day because the station never got any calls. Sometimes it looked like pulling people out of burning buildings or prying them out of wrecked cars, with the occasional water rescue. 

And sometimes it looked like this—heading out on a call to rescue a cat stuck in a tree. 

JJ liked the unpredictability of it all, the thrill that came with never knowing just quite what he’d be up against when the alarm bells went off. He liked being able to help people when they needed it most. 

At Station P4, they rotated shifts in the ambulance. Today was JJ’s turn to ride the ambo, and he loved it just as much. He flicked on the siren as he pulled out of the driveway, rolling down the driver’s side window to let the breeze whip through his already wild blond curls. 

“Dude, can you at least try to obey some traffic laws?” The man sitting in the passenger seat huffed, gripping the handle beside him a little tighter. 

Pope Heyward was one of JJ’s best friends at the station. They’d come up through the fire academy together and got assigned to different stations at first, but were eventually both assigned to the same one. JJ liked to call it fate that they ended up together in the end, because Pope was one of the reasons why he hadn’t gotten dropped in the early stages of training. 

“That’s the beauty of the siren, my friend!” JJ exclaimed, banking a hard left with a gleeful smile. “Turn and burn, baby!”

The location of the call was fairly close to home, so it didn’t take long to arrive at the scene. JJ pulled the ambo to a stop right before the fire engine did the same, grabbing the jump bag from the back before jogging to catch up with the rest of his fellow firefighters. 

There were seven of them total, each one of them making up the rest of JJ’s closest friends. John B. was the station’s captain, but he never acted like he was above the rest of his crew. Kie was his trusty right hand, and Sarah was on track to making lieutenant in a few months. Last but certainly not least, there was Cleo, the station’s newest addition, a probationary firefighter with spunk for days and a fiery attitude (no pun intended). 

Together they formed what JJ liked to call “the dream team”, working together like a well oiled machine in whatever situation they were thrown into. 

JJ fell into step with Kie, elbowing her playfully. “Ten bucks we’ll get the cat down in under twenty.” 

“Make it under fifteen and you’re on.” 

“Thank god you guys are here!” You exclaimed from where you were standing under a giant oak tree, looking fraught with worry. JJ’s smile faltered for a split second and he nearly tripped over his own boots, too distracted by you. He didn’t believe in love at first sight, but if he did, he imagined it would feel something like this. “I tried to get her down, but she kept going higher and I didn’t want her to fall out of the tree and I didn’t think I should go up there so I called you guys! Is that—is that allowed? Does this count as an emergency, can you guys get her down?” 

JJ shook himself out of his daze, opening his mouth to respond, but John B. was faster, offering a more collected reply than JJ probably could in his state. 

“Of course we can get her down, ma’am, you did the right thing by calling. Let us take a look, assess the situation, then we’ll see if we can’t get her down from there safely.” He’d turned his captain’s voice on, the one that made him sound all official and professional and made JJ kind of want to bust out laughing. Now that wouldn’t have been professional at all. 

“Okay, okay, thank you so much,” You breathed, shoulders sagging with relief. The team spread out under the looming tree, peering up into the canopy to locate the cat. One of the highest branches hissed and shook violently, then there she was, a very angry ball of fur with big yellow eyes glaring down at them. 

“Does she normally do this? Climb up trees and not come down?” John B asked, cocking his head. 

“No, she doesn’t, and that’s why I’m worried! She usually never tries to leave the house, but I just opened the door for a second to grab a package and she bolted outside!” 

JJ could tell you were on the verge of panic, and he also noticed the long gash on your arm. 

“Quite a nasty scratch you got there, ma’am. Why don’t we let my friends rescue your feline friend while I check out that wound, yeah?” He insisted, nodding towards the ambulance. You looked apprehensive at first, but he turned on the charm, flashing you a pearly white smile that had you nodding slowly and following him. “Did she scratch you?” 

“Yeah, a little bit when I was first trying to get her down. It’s nothing though, it doesn’t even hurt that much.” 

“Well, I gotta check it out regardless, so if you wouldn’t mind having a seat for me right there.” JJ rummaged through the jump bag for a pair of exam gloves, snapping them on quickly before gesturing for you to give him your arm. You still looked a little uneasy, so he decided to try and lighten the conversation a bit while he examined the scratch running the length of your whole forearm. “I’m JJ. What’s your name?” You told him your name and he repeated it, letting it roll off his tongue easily. He thought it was a really pretty name. Seemed fitting for a pretty girl like you. “And your cat? She got a pretty name too?” 

You pressed your lips into a thin line, looking a little embarrassed now. “Her name’s Porkchop.” JJ cleared his throat, trying his best not to laugh. “It’s stupid, I know—” 

“No, no, it’s not stupid! Porkchop is a very distinguished name. My great uncle’s nickname was Porkchop, and he was pretty cool.” The cut on your arm was long, but shallow and pretty clean, no excessive bleeding or anything else that would suggest a need to take you to the hospital for further medical examination. He grabbed a few supplies that he needed to wrap the wound, spreading them out between the two of you. 

“Is that a joke?” 

“Uh…yeah, it was a joke,” JJ admitted sheepishly, cheeks flushing pink. “It wasn’t a very good one now that I think about it.”

“Is this your way of trying to keep me calm?” 

“It’s…an attempt. Is it working?” 

Your mouth quirked up into a small smile. “Yeah, it is.” 

“Good. I’m glad. Because I gotta clean your cut, and it’s gonna hurt like a motherfucker.” He said solemnly. You shifted in your seat, eyeing the cleaning solution in his hand nervously. “You can hold my hand, if you want.” He added, propping your arm up on his knee to free up his other hand. 

He wasn’t expecting you to take him up on his offer, but you reached for him immediately, curling your fingers around his own. Thank god you weren’t able to feel how his pulse skyrocketed at your touch. 

You squeezed his hand hard, letting out a pained hiss at the stinging sensation that came with JJ’s care. He bandaged your forearm as quick as he could, though he contemplated taking his time so you wouldn’t let go of him for a little while longer. 

“M’kay, all done. Sorry about that.” 

“It’s okay. Didn’t hurt.” 

“Didn’t seem like that with the way you were gripping my hand,” He teased, bumping his knee against yours. You were still smiling at him and if he didn’t know any better, he’d say it was making him a little flustered. Maybe even nervous. And he never got nervous. “If you could just fill this out while I go grab something from the engine, I’ll be right back. It’s just a release form saying that you consent to us not taking you down to the hospital. Standard procedure, just crossing our I’s, dotting our T’s.” 

JJ hopped down from the ledge, passing a clipboard to you and hurrying towards where Pope was spotting Kie on the ladder before you could realize he’d totally butchered that expression. “Pope! Yo, Pope, I gotta talk to you.” 

“What’s up?” 

“What’s the policy on asking out people we save?” 

“You wanna ask out the cat?” Pope snickered. 

JJ rolled his eyes. “No, I don’t. You know what I mean. And her name’s Porkchop, by the way.” 

“Cute. But no, there’s not really any policy against it, I guess. Not one that I know of, anyways.” 

“Yeah?” He cocked his head thoughtfully, gears inside already turning. Pope nodded. “Good to know.” 

“Hey, wait, that doesn’t mean you should—” JJ was out of earshot before Pope could finish his sentence, beelining right back for the ambo to you. Just as he came around the corner, you looked up, capping your pen, holding the clipboard back out to him. 

“All done? You’re fast, I like it.” 

“My number is on the medical form. In case you need to follow up on anything in the near future.” You offered, running your fingers along your bandage absentmindedly. 

“Ah, so we usually don’t do the follow-ups, that would be—oh. Oh! You meant—got it, you want me to….yeah. I mean, I want to, ‘cause you seem cool.” It was like word vomit escaping JJ’s mouth, because he couldn’t seem to stop talking, but you just smiled warmly at him, giving his hand a soft squeeze. He kind of liked that you’d made the first move instead of him.

Throughout this, the rest of his team had managed to get Porkchop down from the tree, as evident by the way she was purring in Kie’s arms contently like she hadn’t just scratched the shit out of you earlier. 

You leapt away from JJ quickly, though he wasn’t sure if it was more about not being caught cozying up to him or that your cat was now safe and sound. He hoped it was the latter. 

“Thank you so much!” You gushed, gathering your beloved cat into your arms as Kie passed her off to you. “Thank you, thank you, thank you—you guys are the best.” 

“Just doin’ our job, ma’am.” John B nodded, tipping his helmet towards you. 

“Some more than others.” muttered Pope. It went unnoticed by you, but JJ heard the comment, giving his friend a swift stomp on the foot in return. “I mean, we’re happy we could help.” 

“If JJ’s all done patching you up, we can go ahead and wrap up, leave you to the rest of your day.” 

“Uh, yeah. Yep, all set and ready to go, JB.” 

“Right then. You have a good day, ma’am. You too, Porkchop. Try not to climb any more trees, ‘kay?” 

The rest of JJ’s team filed back towards the engine and Pope made his way up to the front of the ambo, leaving you and JJ alone yet again. 

“Talk to you soon?” You asked hopefully, shifting Porkchop higher in your arms. 

“You know it,” JJ replied, shooting you his signature wink. He went to hop  into the driver’s seat swiftly, taking another few seconds to soak in the sight of you smiling bashfully at him before he had to drive away. 

“You asked her out, didn’t you?” 

“What? Of course not. Why would you even think such a thing?” Even as he spoke, there was a giddy sort of smile on his face, one that Pope clocked in on immediately. 

“You’re lying! You’re such a liar, you totally asked her out! JJ, you really—” Whatever Pope was about to say was cut off as JJ cranked up the radio as loud as it could go, drowning out the other man’s complaints. 

So yeah, being a firefighter in a big city looked different from day to day. Some days held bigger calls than others, but sometimes it was the smaller calls that were the most memorable. Days like today.

you don’t remember climbing as high as you did. all you knew, was that you’d lost track of all the branches, looked down, and froze. you were way higher than you intended on climbing.

it had been atleast two hours now. you were getting cold, thirsty, the branch you sat on was digging into places it shouldn’t — which is why when the small company firefighter car rolls up, you feel like you’ve seen an angel. when a cute blonde boy that you can barely make out from up there steps out, the feeling intensifies.

it’s not long before you’re staring at eachother face to face, the stranger leaning casually on his ladder telling you that the height didn’t bother him in the slightest.

“so uh, yeah — usually i’m rescuing cats from trees but… hey.” he speaks casually, probably to keep you calm and collected. you furrow your brows, letting out an uncomfortable whimper as you look down at the drop, realising he’s probably gonna have to move you. “hey hey hey, keep it cool we’re allll good. jus’ look at me, atta girl.” he waves a hand and redraws your attention, mainly due to the fact that despite being stuck at the top of a tree — you’d still preen at praise.

you suck in some shaky breaths, digging your nails into the bark and he blinks at you, observing your body language. “alright, look… me n’you are just gonna stay here as long as you need ‘til you feel like you’re ready to come down with me. uh’kay? no rush.” something about his words calm you and you nod, keeping your eyes trained on him. “nice, nice— good. so… y’wanna start by telling me your name?”

JJ's Older brother - Headcanon

Bobby Maybank - 23

Six years older than JJ, still living at home because he's paying off debt that his father put in his name.

Hot-head, anger can get the better of him but he's trying to think more before he lashes out.

Works part time as a firefighter and does odd handyman jobs for extra cash.

Always looked out for his little brother, but can't be there for him all the time.

keeps his dad at arms length, tries his best to put himself in the crossfire of their fathers anger instead of JJ.

Thinks JJ is the better Maybank and hates how he get judged for his father/older brothers mistakes.

Takes the blame for most things.

Bails JJ out of trouble every time. "You gotta stop with this shit, J. No ones gonna care soon and you'll be just like him."

Tries to give JJ as much stability as he can, even when he's never had it himself. He makes more mistakes than wins when it comes to his little brother.

Shoved JJ once during an argument and vowed never to lose his temper with him again, even if his younger brother does push his buttons or do something stupid.

They argue a lot, but always resolve it quickly.

JJ's definitely been lectured about not putting out a cigarette and fires. "Start a fire one time man."

Pulls JJ out of fights with Kooks, sometimes to squares up to them so they leave him alone (but doesn't throw a punch).

"You used to punch first and ask questions later," JJ scoffed. "Yeah, but I was swinging at guys my own age. I'm not going to punch a kid now, go to jail for that shit."

Used to sleep in his truck when he had nowhere to go, least he knew JJ had John B's to go.

People in the outer banks can't seem to get past his last name and judge him for being a Maybank, even if he's trying to do better for himself.

used to be close friends with Barry, they still have respect for each other but don't go out of their way to be friendly anymore.

Sticks up for JJ if anyone bad mouths him. "Don't say shit about my brother." "Watch your mouth." Points figure.

Listens to his younger brothers strange ramblings and just nods his head as if he understands.

Pogues have a bet on who can get a smile out of him...which is still running.

All things considered, Los Angeles wasn’t a bad place to end up when you’re freshly twenty three. Sure, it’s no Pelican, North Carolina, but JJ Maybank likes well enough.

JJ Maybank is at the beach and saves an eight year old girl from drowning after she gets stuck in a rip current. He doesn’t think, just springs into action. When he runs into the medic that responded to call, Mariella Diaz, and her brother Eddie that night at the bar, he tells her about how he wasn’t able to save his brother from the same thing thirteen years ago and how helping someone gave him a sense of belonging he really had never known and some how he finds himself applying to the Los Angeles Fire Academy, and eventually joining the 118.

Here's a blurb to kick off my "spook-tober" series!

Prompt: “October ain’t October until someone has their head stuck in a pumpkin.” & “Oh, this isn’t a costume. This is my natural state of being.” Pairing: JJ Maybank x reader Requested by: yours truly Word Count: 927 ----------------

"JJ, I swear to God, if you don't stop waving that knife around I'm going to shove your pumpkin on your head," Kie threatens, glaring at the blond as he carelessly stabs his knife into the top of his pumpkin. He sends her a challenging look before sticking his hand into the pile of pumpkin slime you guys accumulated, laughing loudly as everyone releases a string of threats telling him not to start. He'd already shoved a handful down your shirt, manically laughing as you squirmed in disgust, quickly reprimanding him humorously while emptying the goop onto the concrete.

"You know Kie, that's not a bad idea," JJ states, dropping the pumpkin bits back onto the pile. He swiftly pulls his knife out of the top of his pumpkin, placing it on the table next to you before taking his pumpkin into his hands with a devious smirk.

"JJ, what are you doing?" You ask, eyebrows furrowed as the gears in his head seem to spin.

"Nothing Y/n," he smiles, sloppily kissing your cheek. "I'm just giving the people what they want."

"What do you mean you're giving the people what they wan-," before you can finish your sentence, JJ flips his pumpkin onto his head, sending everyone in a fit of laughter. You watch as he stands from his spot on the table and clumsily walks around, clearly unable to see out of the single hole that he'd actually made for his Jack-o'-lanterns nose.

"That's a great look for you JJ," John B teases, his laughter deepening when JJ trips over a stick in the yard and falls to the ground. You immediately move to help him, unable to keep yourself from giggling at your boyfriends antics.

"Here," you state, grabbing JJ's hand to gentle help him off of the ground. "What do you say we get back to the original task at hand, hm? It's freezing outside and mom made me promise that we'd be home to watch Hocus Pocus with them."

"Anything for you m'lady," he bows, placing his hands on the pumpkin to pull it off of his head. "Oh shit." You watch him struggle, a string of panicked cuss words leaving his lips as he stumbles around the yard in an attempt to get the pumpkin off.

"Would you guys stop laughing and help me get this damn thing off?," JJ grumbles, only causing the fit of laughter deepen at the fact that he's facing the opposite way with his hands on his hips. "Seriously guys, I'm claustrophobic and I'm starting to panic."

"October ain't October until someone has their head stuck in a pumpkin," John B jokes, gesturing for Pope to help him.

The boys struggle to get the pumpkin off for ten minutes with no avail, while JJ only grows more frustrated at the fact that nothing seems to be working.

"Listen, my dad is a firefighter, he deals with stuff like this all the time. Maybe we should go to my place and have him handle it," you offer, after all three of the boys collapsed in exhaustion.

"No way Y/n. There's no way in hell I'm showing up to your house with a pumpkin on my head. Your dad already thinks I'm a freak show," JJ argues, trying to pull himself off of the ground. "This thing is heavy." Pope rolls his eyes and helps JJ lift himself off of the ground, still humored by the situation.

"Do you have any better ideas? At this rate you're going to be in that think until it rots," Kiara adds, finishing up her own Jack-o'-lantern.

With that, you're all piling into the Twinkie and beelining it to your house on Figure Eight. You made sure to tell your parents that you were on the way before taking the opportunity to take pictures of JJ, who'd given up on trying to get the pumpkin off.

"Y/n, I didn't know the whole clan was coming for movie night! I'll make more snacks," your mom greets upon seeing everyone at the door.

"Well, they weren't going to but you see, we have a bit of a situation and need dads help," you explain, moving to point at JJ but he wasn't with behind you.

"What kind of situation," she questions apprehensively, crossing her arms over her chest.

"Well you see," Pope starts, just as John B pulls JJ up to the front door.

"Hi Mrs. y/l/n," JJ greets sweetly, causing your mom to crack a smile.

"That's quite the costume you've got on JJ," you father chuckles, after coming behind your mother to see what was going on.

"Oh, this isn't a costume sir, it's my natural state of being when Halloween comes around," JJ explains cooly, making you roll your eyes at his antics. Your mom gestures for everyone to come in while you and your dad take JJ to the garage. In little to no time, JJ's head is free from the pumpkin. He takes a deep breath before thanking your dad.

"What do you say we keep pumpkins off of our heads from now on?" Your dad smiles, patting JJ on the back with a casual smile.

"Yes sir," JJ agrees with a small nod, before you all walk into the house. Everyone greets JJ with cheers at the fact that he's now pumpkin-free, while he pumps his fists victoriously.

Every bone in my body is shaking as of now. My feet would not stop tapping away as JJ drove the car. He takes notice of my nervous state. “Babe, you’re shaking so hard, the baby’s rocking.” I just chuckle nervously. “What’s up babygirl?” He asked placing a hand on my bare thigh, the warm gesture erupts butterflies in my stomach. 

“Nothing, I’m just really nervous to meet him.” I confess, referring to Jamie, my real father. Today is the day I get to meet him for the first time. We’re having dinner with him and my mom. “C’mon babe, you have nothing to worry about. He’s going to love you. He already does.” JJ attempts to reassure me. “But what if he’s disappointed in me about the pregnancy. He’s going to be a grandfather in six months, that’s got to come as a shock to him.” Despite being fully aware of who my biological father is and having many opportunities to meet him, I always kept avoiding, out of fear that he’d already disown me. 

“Aria, he is not Claude. Everyone in the cut knows he’s a nice guy. He’s tranquilo. Most easy going guy I’ve ever met. Plus, you're a spectacular woman. He’d be crazy not to love you. I know I do.” JJ gives me one of his infamous winks, making me blush. It feels just like yesterday, when we met and he was already making me weak in the knees with his flirtatious compliments. He really knows how to make a girl’s heart throb. 

I attempt to reach back and grab my purse from the backseat, but JJ stops me from doing so. “Whoa whoa. Hold your horses babygirl. I’ll get it for you.” He reaches back himself once we hit a red light. I just roll my eyes at him. “I’m pregnant. Not crippled.” JJ ignores my comment. “Exactly, which means you shouldn't be doing hard work.” My eyes roll once again as I retrieve my breath mints. I take one more in my hand, before leaning over to JJ. My fingertips skim over his warm lips, which he gladly opens up for the minty goodness, his moist tongue skims my nails. 

I giggle and peck his lips. He smiles and hums. “God, I wish we were behind closed doors. It felt like an eternity standing on the porch, waiting for someone to answer the door. The anticipation was piratically killing me. My life was in slow motion as the door creeped open, finally revealing the face of the man I never knew. My had been breath caught in my throat when I saw him. It was like looking in a mirror, except it was a male. All these years I resembled someone else. How did I not see this before. 

“You must be Aria.” Jamie smiled cheek to cheek as he held out his hand for me to shake, which I gladly accepted. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.” The two of us stepped into the warm and welcoming home. “Pleasure is all mine, and JJ you must be the boyfriend.” Jamie pulls him into a hug. “How’s life treating you Wilson? Did you get the boat fixed?” JJ asked curiously. It was nice to know that the two already knew each other and were quite friendly. I couldn't help but feel slightly jealous at the fact that JJ knew my father more than me. 

“Hey kids. You two are just in time. Dinner is ready.” My mom entered the room, apron still on. “JJ, could you please help me set the table?” Elaine asked sweetly. “Of course.” The two enter the dining room, leaving Jamie and I alone. He was the first to speak. 

“I’m really happy that you agreed to come. I’ve been waiting for yours to finally meet you and get to know you.” He confessed, tears had threatened to spill, which he unfortunately noticed. “I’m sorry if I was moving too fast or startled you with this.” He apologized. “No, it’s okay. It’s not your fault. This is all just really new to me. My life has been spiraling out of control lately.” I chuckle.

“How’s the baby?” His question made my eyes widen in surprise. “The baby is doing great. Um, I wasn’t aware you knew.” “I tried seeing you at the hospital, but clearly I arrived at a bad time. Your mother told me about the baby.” He explained. “What do you think about it?” I asked nervously. “At first I was in shock. Then I was upset,” The words made sick for a moment. “When I learned that Claude had kicked you out.” This brought me relief. “I couldn’t believe he was so cruel towards you. You didn't deserve that. He didn't deserve you either.” Memories of Claude had stormed my brain. He hasn't even bothered to call and ask if I was okay. Years of him raising me had been thrown out the window.

“I’m so sorry that I wasn't there for you growing up, and I want to make it up to you for all those years, if you would let me.” His eyes were filled with desperation. “Of course. I want to make this work, and thank you.” “For what?” He asked confused. “For accepting me.” He just smiles warmly. “Always. Now let's go eat. Your mom has whipped up something good.” 

I genuinely enjoyed getting to know Jamie over dinner. He was filled with love, warmth and humor. I could see why people liked him so much. He was an amazing storyteller, everyone at the table paid attention, full of excitement. He never failed to make me laugh.

“So how did you two meet?” Elaine motioned between Jamie and JJ. The two share a laugh. “JJ was riding his bike one day, trying to outrun some kids.” Typical JJ. “He used a ramp to jump over a fence, losing the kids. He was too busy teasing the kids, he didn't see the parked firetruck in front of him, causing him to crash into it and broke his nose.” Laughter had erupted at the table. 

“I think he was six at the time. We took him to hospital, he got to ride in the fire-truck that day. You should've seen the smile on his face. It was adorable even with all the blood dripping from his nose.” JJ smiled at the memory. “What have you been up to these days son?” Asked Jamie. “Working mostly. I’m just trying to save up money for the baby. I’m working multiple jobs now.” 

“Have you ever given any thought to becoming a firefighter?” This immediately caught my attention and JJ’s. “Would that even be possible for me?” He asked hesitant. “Yeah, you have a high school diploma. I would highly recommend you’d get associates degree program in fire science, and EMT classes. Then there’s the fire academy.” Jamie explained.

“I can’t afford to go to college. I don’t think I’d be accepted by any.” He said. “There’s always community college. It’s a lot cheaper too. I could pay for your tuition with no problem.” My mom offered. “I couldn't ask you to do that. You’ve already done so much.” JJ attempted to decline her offer. “Please, it's the least I can do. I care about you too JJ, and I want the best for you, just like my daughter. You’re family now.” I could see the shock in JJ’s eyes when he heard what she said. His heart almost melted right there. 

“I’ll need some time to think about it. Thank you.” This seemed to please my mom. JJ and I help gather the plates and silverware, clearing the table and washed the dishes. When JJ and I walked back out to the dining room, we saw my mom and Jamie putting on their coats. “Where are you guys going?” I asked curiously. 

“We have a surprise for you two. Come on.” Jamie answered and grabbed his keys. JJ and I shared a confused look, but followed them outside. I give JJ a suspicious look as he follows behind their car, going who knows where. “Are you in on this?” I raise an eyebrow. “I'm just as clueless as you are babe. I’m looking forward to see what the surprise is.” He answers excitedly. “That makes two of us.” 

We finally reach our destination, still in the cut, we pull into the driveway of this beautiful baby blue two story home. There was a small, yet cute front yard and trees surrounding the land, giving the home some privacy. We exit the car and meet up with Elaine and Jamie who were wait on the front porch. “Mom, you bought a new house for yourself?” I asked admiring the interior, which was painted a nice creme color. 

“Nope. I just moved in with Jamie.” She answered with a gleaming smile. “So, whose house is it?” I asked confused. “It’s your guy’s” She tossed the keys into the air, which JJ caught flawlessly. Words couldn't even express the exhilaration coursing through our bodies. The two of us stand there in surprise. “Are you serious right now?” I asked, not believing any of this was true. I have to be dreaming right now. 

“100%. It’s all yours. It’s a four bedroom and three bathroom home. If you go outback, you’ll see that you're right next to the marsh. This house isn’t too far from John B’s.” My mom explained. “Mom, I don’t know what to say. This is amazing! Oh my gosh! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” I exclaim cheerfully, hugging her. JJ was still in pure shock. 

“You’re welcome love. Jamie and I wanted you guys to have a nice home for you and the baby somewhere on the cut, close to us and your friends.” It took everything in me not to burst out in tears right there. “C’mon, we want to give you a tour of the house.” She nudged me. 

“I’ll catch up with you guys in a second. I want have a word with Jamie.” I said. “Of course. JJ?” The two left the room and gave us some space. “What’s up kiddo?” Asked Jamie. I decided to answer with a tight warm hug instead of words. His body had stiffened out of surprise, before relaxing and returning the hug. The hug felt right and comforting. Nothing like the cold hugs that rarely gotten from Claude growing up. This felt right. These were the fatherly arms that were supposed to hold and comfort me. A smile and happy tears decorate my face.
