Thinking about Edward Elric as the Amestrian Military's specialest little unfireable boy
State alchemists can be fired for underperforming. We know this up front from the likes of Shou Tucker. And this makes a ton of sense from the homunculi's standpoint since the state alchemists are sacrifice candidates, and the homunculi would want to cull the weakest candidates and focus only on cultivating the strongest ones who stand the best chance of opening the portal.
........Then there's Edward. Who's already opened the portal.
There's no need to cultivate him. No gamble taken on whether he's good enough to open the portal. He passed the final test already. Graduated 4 semesters early.
And as such, has a free pass to do Absolute Fuck All.
And I'm imagining how funny this is from like an outside perspective.
Some newish state alchemist who'd only ever read up on the stories of Edward Elric, ready and excited to start their career of being paid handsomely with endless freedom to research and travel and do anything they want in the pursuit of science... surprised and confused to find themselves put on probation their first month for things like "ignoring orders." Which is, as best they had thought, a famous Edward Elric pastime.
Roy showing a slight bit of stress about his yearly state alchemist report, and Ed just snorting and rolling his eyes at Roy because every year HE just hastily does his on the train ride over (canon in the manga, a travesty it was left out of the anime) and it gets rubber stamped. Ed not realizing that other alchemists' reports get genuinely scrutinized and torn apart while Ed is free to turn in whatever absolute bullshit he thinks of 36 hours ahead of time. One year his report was about whether alchemy could be done via dance (conclusion: no it can't) and no one cared. Roy WANTS to tell Ed there's some kind of unknown favoritism around Ed making him literally bullet-proof but Roy has no way to phrase this that doesn't sound like he's just in denial and mad at how good Ed's train-reports are.
Guy from the Internal Amestrian Affairs sector who's responsible for auditing other internal military personel for any suspicious activity hitting about 1 million red flags for Edward Elric, issuing a STRONG and URGENT recommendation to suspend the alchemist pending further investigation into things like "literal bunk-buddies with two members of the Xingese royalty (enemy nation)" and "spent $10,000,000 of his stipend on a librarian to make her re-copy (what he seemed to interpret as?) military records in some extremely transparent effort to unearth state secrets (it was a recipe book but he was literally asking her about state secrets)" and "literally has never once obeyed an order, ever, not even once in his career, and is on public record having said 'I do not care about the goals and protections of the Amestrian Military. I am in fact only pursuing my own interests several of which are diametrically opposed to the safety and well-being of the governing body of Amestris'"
The issued recommendation is intercepted before it even reaches its intended desk. President Bradley himself has taken issue with it and denies it before a single set of eyes has seen it. The President's veto stamp is a terrifying hammer, used rarely, and it is now sitting on the auditor's desk.
The auditor sleeps with one eye open from then on out.

Fire safety is a crucial aspect of any building or facility and it is essential to regularly conduct fire safety audits to ensure that the premises are compliant with fire safety regulations and standards. A fire safety audit is a comprehensive examination and evaluation of the building or facility to identify potential fire hazards and to ensure that the building is equipped with adequate fire protection measures.

So this is pertaining to my story Meta Assassins on AO3. Summary to follow so you can have context:
The very franchise we know exists as games within the games themselves and Desmond Miles isn't sure how to feel about this. He owns the first five games and soon Black Flag drops along with a new never-released game. It is there that Desmond meets Altair, Malik, Kadar, Ezio, and Federico. Desmond finds solace in the games given he now works at a gas station and has a crappy boss. While working one day he unknowingly meets Giovanni Auditore who gives him his contact information because he thinks Desmond is hard working and dedicated. Assassin’s Creed: Quadrivium, a MMORPG, drops and that's when he starts to figure things out. He eventually wants to go to Italy to visit Ezio and Federico during the winter holiday, which he does. Currently he is hanging out with Claudia Auditore at the local market.
Eventually I will have Desmond get hurt on the job at the gas station. A wet floor he didn't see, and there was no wet floor sign. He was carrying some heavy product that landed on his chest and left leg pinning him to the ground. His friends find it odd that he doesn't join them that night, but eventually a week goes by before they decide to go to New York to find Desmond. Which is how they discover the poor conditions Desmond has been living in. I am just stuck on how to write the accident scene and the twist of Desmond being fired for having the accident. Typically I have Kadar be the one that kicks them in the pants, cause I like to think he would have studied people's behaviors which would be useful as an assassin, but considering that I now have him dating Claudia, I could have her bugging Federico and Ezio about it since it's very uncharacteristic for Desmond to not answer her for more than a day (he did that once, called her to explain he was exhausted and apologized, he was yawning the entire time which made her realize he works himself to the bone.
Anyway, take your time and get to this when you can. Though I look forward to it, cause honestly I forget what I have asked so it's a nice surprise treat when you answer, like "Oh my Goth I asked that?" Thank you for all these lovely ask and answers. Safety and Peace upon you my friend.
Thank you and upon you as well, friend! Here's the link to the fanfic for those curious: Meta Assassins, please give it a try if you're interested and leave some love :)
If you want to keep it a suspense, one way would be to not write the accident scene at first. Shift the narration to Claudia or Federico or even Ezio and how they haven’t heard about Desmond for a while. Create a mini-mystery of some kind perhaps?
Then when they decided to fly to New York, that’s when the narration shifts back to Desmond. If you’re having problem writing the accident itself, you can set the narration to the same day that they set off to check Desmond and make it something that Desmond internally muses about. Focus the narration on what has happened after he was fired and how he’s holding up. Depending on how long it took for them to decide to fly to America, maybe the timeline was long enough that he needed to sell some things to pay the bills which included his computer and phone. Maybe he had to give up on paying his internet provider to pay the other bills using what he had saved up. Those would be valid reasons why he couldn’t say anything more to his friends.
Now, if you truly want the accident to be a central scene…
Well…
I’ve been clumsy since I was a kid (hence why I had to get a tetanus shot this month) so I can tell you that it might seemed ridiculous but one can do a lot of damage thanks to flailing limbs while ‘sliding’. He doesn’t have to be carrying the heavy product. He could be on his break and leaving the gas station when he skids across the floor and grabbed the first thing he could, which turned out to be the nozzle attached to a nearby car. The nozzle goes flying off the car and still dispensing gas and Desmond smacks his head hard against the car and his head bleeds.
Head bleeding tend to be heavy so they had to call 911 because they freaked out from seeing all the blood.
Of course, Desmond has no health insurance so now he has medical bills to pay for a head injury that he could have probably (probably) treated himself and, when he returned to his work, his boss fires him and tells him he has to pay for the wasted gas. And, because he was on his ‘break’ when it happened, his accident wasn’t covered by his ‘previous’ job (to be fair, Desmond is pretty sure that was just an excuse to not pay him squat).
Hope this helps and, even if you don’t use this, this gives you an idea of how to write this scene :)
(Also, instead of the gas, gas stations usually have convenient stores and you can make Desmond have his accident there where he grabs a shelf to stop his fall, breaks his ankle and crashes lots of merchandises that he has to pay for)

A Minnesota poll courier has been fired after leaving thousands of ballots unattended in an open car trunk outside Edina City Hall, southwest of Minneapolis.
The incident happened on Friday as the worker was dropping off boxes of ballots, and a photo of the trunk with the unsecured boxes spread on social media.
Supporters of former President Donald Trump and local Republican Party leaders shared the image, questioning the safety of mail-in voting, but Hennepin County officials said there was “no evidence of tampering.”
Officials posted Edina City Hall surveillance footage showing that no one interfered with the ballots during the approximately nine minutes that they were unattended.
County officials acted quickly to release statements explaining what had happened as they fight online disinformation about the safety of elections.
“Hennepin County acknowledges that this lapse in protocol occurred, should not have happened, and is unacceptable. Corrective actions have been taken by the county and its courier to prevent any recurrence,” the county said on Saturday. “The county has confirmed the driver has been terminated.”
Officials added that all the ballots were “accounted for” and that they remained in their “sealed condition.”
Hennepin County Auditor Daniel Rogan said in a statement that “leaving ballots unattended is simply unacceptable.”
“Hennepin County is reinforcing its transfer protocols with county staff and vendors,” he added. “An incident like this underscores the value of strong chain-of-custody processes, so that risk can be addressed and integrity can be verified.”
Trump has made false claims for years that mail-in voting is rife with fraud despite experts saying that the voting method is secure, employing paper trails and duplicative safeguards.
The ballots left in the vehicle were dropped off by voters in dropboxes, CNN noted, from where they’re collected by election workers and transported to offices to be processed. Trump and many Republicans oppose the use of dropboxes, arguing that they could be subject to fraud and manipulation.
There have been a small number of incidents but there’s no evidence of widespread fraud using dropboxes or any other voting method.
In most places, dropboxes have 24/7 surveillance, they’re locked, and sometimes chained to the ground.
The car in question had been used to pick up ballots in other cities before taking them to Edina, the city said.

Headcanons for what the Aditor, Phobos, Tricky, and Sheriff would do if they’re kid was in danger? (Before the kid has powers- they’re completely defenseless. Maybe it would happen while the parents were distracted/preoccupied and some sudden disaster happens?)
Auditor: - This scenario would probably happen at one of the AAHW bases if it ever got raided by Hank Wimbleton. - His instinct would be to locate his child. Search on every camera feed, question agents, and remember through his memory on who they were with last. Once his child has been found, the Auditor goes on a full sprint to get there as quick as possible. - Their child would most likely be with Torture, who would put his life on the line to protect the little employer, and that would be where he finds them. Hiding nearby while Torture is chasing down and trying to deal with Hank. - The employer would waste no time in grabbing his child and sinking into the ground with them to get them to safety. Once the child is safe, Audi goes into full protective dad mode and will go to take care of Hank personally for getting too close to his child. - Fire flies, swords clash, and a smoldering hatred burns in the employers eyes for the dissenter that continues to break Nevada, the realm that his child would grow up to rule, into more and more fractures. He will give everything to make sure that his child has a world to grow up in. Even if it means killing Hank with his bare hands. Phobos: - Should any emergency occur, the Director is instantly abandoning his position and going to where he knows his child is. - If any rouge or unwanted individuals are present in the private sector of the science tower, he will slay them with his sword without question. Even if they are allies. Wrong place, wrong time. Simple. - If he does arrive into the room where his child is and finds unwanted/non-guard entities in there, he won't hesitate to defend his baby. He'll rip and tear until the interlopers are no more and his youngling is safe once again. - Until the danger passes, the child will spend the entire time wrapped up in his coat and cape, as close to their father as they can be. Where Phobos knows they will certainly be the safest. Tricky: - You would have to be incredibly stupid or incredibly brave to try and go into Tricky's territory while he has little babies that need protecting. - The father is vicious and relentless. If you aren't his mate, you'll pretty much be killed on sight. No bandit, zed, or even defenseless passerby are safe from his non-discriminatory wrath. - Don't even THINK you can sneak up on him or his younglings. He has an improbability drive and the corrupted brain of a brilliant scientist in his head. He WILL know and he WILL kill you. - AFTER he's done killing you, he's definitely going to feed your body to his little babies to 'get some use out of you'. Sheriff: - Sheriff almost becomes a totally different person when his baby is put in danger. The cowardly cowboy that most grunts know that he is disappears and a raging pissed off Texan is forced into it's place. - Shoot now, talk later mentality. If a zed outbreak happens in his sector where his child is present, he won't stop until he personally deals with every last bootlicker that crawls up from the ground. - His change in personality is...shocking to his men. It's like there's something powerful that's lurking around in his body and it only comes out when his baby is threatened. - His kills even get more vicious, with saws, crowbars, ANYTHING he can get his hands on becoming a lethal weapon. The scene of Sheriff panting while covered in zed blood is an image that is now burned into the minds of all members of MERC. - He only begins to calm down once his kid is safely in his arms and is being carried to a new location where it's safer for them. Like a storm over a Texan desert, it's powerful and terrifying...but eventually passes. Leaving a trail of destruction in it's wake.

Multiplayer. Part 2
First post
The piercing sound of static filled the room of passed out friends. All were asleep from previous hours of games and laughter. You were in your room as your friends had decided to crash in different areas of the room with the Bedrolls that 2 had brought with him. Nobody was aware of the Shadowy figure that slithered between all of them to make its way towards you. The red slits of the figures eyes cast over you and your friends, looking at them in both curiousity and contempt. You were the only one that was picked out of the sleeping group, you were the one he wanted after all. However, your friends were one variable that he did not account for. All of them had interference with his world, and even now, as his world was linked to yours, their own interferences were showing. Like the soft threads you made, their own light threads shimmered in the feedback of the static, tangling to his body as they were carelessly strewn about. Auditor felt disgust at this and nodded to his cohorts to pull him back.
The strings did not let him go.
The feedback caused by the extra weights of your friends flung them from the original path that you followed and into this new world without you. You may have been taken to somewhere of relative safety, but your friends had no such fortune. Something else was looking out for them, be it the maker or their own positions as players in this world that seemed to bow to your very natures.
:Player 2:
2 felt his body hit the ground harshly. The wind was knocked out of him and he woke up. The air around him stunk of rotting flesh and burning garbage, he coughed as he got up and looked around. It took him a few seconds to fill his burning lungs with oxygen. He bent down and picked up his hat before hearing a shot and an impact near his location. "Now hold it right there!," a familiar sounding voice shouted out, "Don't make any sudden moves."
'Well shit.,' 2 thought to himself and slowly stood up.
"Keep yer hands where I can see 'em.," the voice ordered. "I'm not here to cause trouble.," 2 announced. "That remains to be seen.," The man replied.
2 looked up to find the origin of the voice, that was when he saw a sniper pointing a rifle at him. And a very familiar looking creature standing next to the sniper. "Well, Aren't you the strangest looking son of a gun I've ever seen.," The cowboy hat wearing grey skinned creature chuckled. "I could say the same thing about you.," 2 replied with a bold smile, "As you can probably guess, I ain't from around here." He took his jacket off and raised his arms, "I have no weapons. I have no intent to harm anyone. I just want to find my friends." "Oh for- There's more of you?!," The man shouted down at 2. "Yeah. But I think it's past time to introduce ourselves.," The Bold player said, "I'm 2, Player 2." This caused the man to stumble a bit before he responded, "I'm the Sheriff. I'm the boss around here." 2 nodded, "I'll respect that. You got a good operation here, Self-sufficient, Reinforced, Rather safe."
"Now, what are you doing out here, 'player 2'?," Sheriff asked. "Like I said before, I just want to find my friends. We're not from around here, and we need to go home as soon as possible.," 2 responded, "I repeat, I do not intend harm to you." "Would one of these friends happen to be 'Player'?," Sheriff asked. "Yes sir.," The player replied, "We've been friends for years and have worked on many things together." The air felt tense to 2. He recognized this place as Nevada, Specifically, The wall that led to the MERC facility. He hoped Sheriff wouldn't have his men open fire on him. That would suck. 2 let out a sigh as the sniper was ordered to stand down. The gate was opened a little and Sheriff shouted for him to get in quickly. From the cackling he heard behind him, 2 did not need to be told twice and sprinted to the gate.
The young man brushed the dust off of him and put his jacket back on. He fixed his hat and gloves before looking over to the Sheriff, who was walking up to him. 2 could tell it was Sheriff from how he dressed. But he did not look like the bean men that he and the others were used to. 'Homunculi' 4 would call something like this. Something that looked human, but was not. 2 let Sheriff walk around him, examining him cautiously. The older man stood in front of 2, to which the younger noted that they seemed to be about the same height. Although 2 could also tell he was somewhat taller than the man before him. This made 2 think, if he was this tall, were grunts all taller on average than humans? He would just have to find out by seeing examples of more of them. That, however, was not his primary concern at the moment. "Sheriff. Would it be okay for me to stay here for a bit while I look for my friends?," Player 2 asked, "If not, then I'll just leave and let you alone, I know you have a lot to worry about right now, trying to scrape together a livin' for you and the rest of MERC."
'I swear, I'll find all of you so we can get home.'
:Player 3:
3 cried out in pain as she felt a kick to her side. "What the hell is this thing?!," a voice asked, "It's damn ugly!" The Red jacket wearing woman looked up at the thing that kicked her. It looked like a man, but had grey skin and no facial features, save for a mouth and glasses where eyes should be. "You're not much better looking.," the rough young woman wheezed out with a jeer. "This thing has a mouth on it.," Another voice said as 3 was roughly wrenched up by her arm, "It's scrawny, It wouldn't be any good for the agency." "Hank would chew it up and spit it out in no time.," the first said. Rough fingers grabbed her face and forced her to look at who was in front of her, She recognized him immediately as an AAHW agent. 'Great. So this is what they look like up close.,' 3 thought to herself as she saw her reflection in the Grunt's shades.
The agent's claws threatened to cut into her skin as he gripped her face tighter, "Hey, this thing's skin is very thin." "Your face is hideous.," 3 spat then launched a glob of saliva onto the agent's glasses. The grey skinned grunt stumbled back and took his shades off to look at them. He had a cross marking instead of a face, a cross that scrunched up in disgust. "Disgusting creature.," the agent grumbled then motioned to the one holding 3, "Tie it up and gag it. We'll let the uppers decide what to do with it. Especially since it's not from around here." "Hopefully they teach it some manners.," the agent behind her snickered, "The spit isnt acidic is it?" 3 felt her hands get cuffed together and a tie wrapped around her head as a makeshift gag before she was shoved into a transport truck. She gave a good kick to the one that shoved her in and hit him between the legs.
The grunt went down in pain. 'guess they do have junk.,' 3 thought and felt the one she spat on stomp her foot as packback. "This one looks like it'll have to go through a lot of obedience training.," The one that she spat on growled, "Bitch." "Bitch huh? That's what we'll call it.," The one she kicked gasped and got up before punching her gut. 3 gasped in pain and immediately thought of her friends, were they also in danger? Was player and 4 in danger?! She could take pain very well, that is true, but seeing her friends in pain was unbearable to her. She would have to bide her time until she can get out of this situation and find her friends. 'I'll show you a bitch when I get out of this.,' 3 thought to herself.
The truck itself shook as it turned on and the men drove off. 3 knew this was not going to be easy, but she was used to fighting. She'd fight just to keep her friends safe, even if it gave her greivous wounds. But she had to have a significant plan in mind, grunts are literally bred for combat and seeing how big these two were, she would have to be careful. She may be brash and hotheaded, but she's not stupid. 'I'll make you two kneel, then I'll go find 4 and the others.,' She thought to herself, '4, wait for me, okay?' She laid on the floor of the moving truck, gathering her strength and planning her next move. Somehow, she was not scared, this excited her.
If only she could control these guys like she could control the playable characters in the game she and her friends had played...
But that was impossible. She just needed to find a way to reunite with her friends and get back home. How else would she be able to go on motorcycle rides on the bike she fixed and upgraded. She would take Player and 4 on another bike ride once this is all over. Hell, maybe she could get player and 2 bikes to go on rides with her and 4. The thought of that brought a smile to her sore face. 'That would be nice. We can all go on a trip.'
'Then maybe, we can all smile again, really smile again.'
She could hear the agents of front talking about what they were going to do once they reported back to base. Their conversation was not interesting, but it would give 3 a bit of insight into these bastards and into this world she had fallen into. Perhaps if she kept her ears open, she could find more information about her friends. She wondered if agents were as vicious gossips as people back home.
:Player 4:
A loud splash resonated into a wide open room. A small body swam to the surface of the tank she fell into and took a big gasp of air. 4 looked around, trying to decipher where she was. The last thing she remembered was the sleepover she and her friends had. She and 3 were right next to each other as usual. They had been talking about their favorite Madness combat characters and which ones they would smooch if given the chance. 4 shook her head of that and knew she had to get out of the tank as soon as possible. The waterproof lining of her favorite coat would only stave off water for so long. The last thing she wanted was the work she and 3 did with making this special LED coat to go to waste. She quickly found an edge and climbed out of the tank of liquid. She found herself on a metal grate over the tank. Her eyes scanned back into the tank and saw something inside of it.
It looked like a large person.
'What in the world is that?!,' she thought to herself and shook herself off. It was cold in this place. And being wet did not help in the slightest. She took her Coat off and shook it before putting it on a hook she found on the wall. She may as well wait to dry a bit before going to see where she was. voices caught her attention. Panicked sounding voices.
"Did you see that?!" "It landed in the tank!" "Someone call security to check it out!"
4 did not know what was going on, but she knew that it would probably be better to get out of there before being found. Especially since this place seemed to be important since it had security. She took her still wet coat and shook it of water as much as she cold before putting it back on and running across the grated elevated walkway to the door she spotted. She heard a door open behind her. "Intruder spotted on lab 14's catwalk!," She heard someone report with the distinct crackle of a walkie talkie. The petite young woman dashed through the door after it automatically for her, she ran to a set of stairs and flew down them. She was running blind through this 'lab' area, but she was scared of what would happen if she was caught.
She was able to run into a more opened space, it looked like a observation room. The automatic door behind her closed and 4 came to an abrupt stop. Not because she was out of steam, no, it was because of the large creature in front of her. It was tall and armored. 4 recognized it immediately from playing the arena mode a bit between the multiplayer streams.
A G03lm.
The tall, lumbering, armored creatured had his back to her. She did not alert him yet. The door opened again and she heard boots run in. "There it is!," A man's voice yelled. 4 thought quickly and ran behind the G03lm, on the opposite side of where he turned in order to keep out of his line of sight. Being small did have some benefits. She could see the scars and stitches on the G03lm's body, it was a lot different seeing them in real life compared with seeing them in game. "Hey, big guy, There's an intruder behind you.," the security who had been chasing 4 told the g03lm.
4 took off towards the door on the other side of the g03lm but it opened to show some men in red lens'ed masks on. She felt a pair of huge hands pick her up. "Intruder captured," She heard the G03lm groan out. "Huh, smaller than I thought.," The Security officer commented, "Take this little strange intruder to a holding cell." 4 wriggled a bit in the g03lms paws and felt a sharp pain of shock. One of the security officers escorting the g03lm holding her jammed a shock baton into her wet leg. Pain shot all through her body, but no sound came from her.
'Everyone. Where are you?'

US APARTHEID 2023- HELLO MISSISSIPPI WE WATCHING YOU: Mississippi GOP passes ‘apartheid’ bill to create unelected courts system in majority-Black capital of Jackson
Mississippi’s Republican-controlled House voted on Tuesday to create a separate court system composed of unelected leaders and an expanded police force in the capital of Jackson.
The proposal, HB 1020, has been put forth by its GOP backers as a measure to increase public safety and reduce backlogs in the courts, but local leaders have argued the measure is a power grab from the state’s largely conservative, white legislature against the majority Black population of Jackson.
“Only in Mississippi would we have a bill like this … where we say solving the problem requires removing the vote from Black people,” Rep Ed Blackmon, a Democrat, said at the legislature on Tuesday.
He added that the measure, which would allow state officials to appoint judges and prosecutors instead of the usual local process of electing them, wouldn’t do anything to reduce crime.
"I notice that this bill does not address part of the problem, which is lack of funding at that crime lab. You’re blaming Jackson because they can’t process their cases fast enough because the crime lab is not operating at capacity because we won’t give them the money," he added.
Last week, Chokwe Antar Lumumba, the mayor of Jackson, said HB 1020 "reminds me of apartheid."
The Jackson City Council, including the sole Republican present, Ashby Foote, voted on Saturday for a resolution opposing the bill, according to the Mississippi Clarion Ledger.
Rep Trey Lamar, a Republican from Senatobia, 175 miles outside of Jackson, defended the bill on Tuesday, saying it would make the capital safer.
"I don’t know what you’ve heard, I’ll say that, but this bill is designed to help make our capital city of Mississippi a safer city,” he said. “This bill is designed to assist the court system of Hinds County, not to hinder it. It is designed to add to our judicial resources in Hinds County, not to take away. To help, not to hurt.”
The capital has indeed struggled with public safety.
According to a 2022 report from the state auditor, Mississippi has had the highest homicide rate of any state in the country since 2018, with more homicides per capita in Jackson than any other major metropolitan area in the country in 2021.
The state, like numerous other cities, has also struggled with what community residents argue is excessive police force.
Last month, family members of Jaylen Lewis, who was killed by police last fall during a traffic stop, called for a federal investigation into the Capitol Police, who would get millions in new funding under HB 1020.
Few details have been released about the shooting, but the officers involved are on administrative leave and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is probing the case
As WLBT reports, the Capitol Police have fired on civilians four times in the last five months, more than any other Mississippi law enforcement agency in the last year.

Joshua Dean, a former quality auditor at Boeing supplier Spirit AeroSystems and one of the first whistleblowers to allege Spirit leadership had ignored manufacturing defects on the 737 MAX, died Tuesday morning after a struggle with a sudden, fast-spreading infection.  Known as Josh, Dean lived in Wichita, Kan., where Spirit is based. He was 45, had been in good health and was noted for having a healthy lifestyle. He died after two weeks in critical condition, his aunt Carol Parsons said.
[...]
Dean had given a deposition in a Spirit shareholder lawsuit and also filed a complaint with the Federal Aviation Administration alleging “serious and gross misconduct by senior quality management of the 737 production line” at Spirit. Spirit fired Dean in April 2023, and he had filed a complaint with the Department of Labor alleging his termination was in retaliation for raising concerns related to aviation safety.

I have a very similar story to trickster.
When I was 20, I almost simultaneously lost both my job and my rental house. At the same time, my sister was about to start nursing school. This required her to go to school full time and essentially work full time doing clinicals to get real world experience. The school wouldn't give her her clinical schedule until classes started. She had two children, an 8 year old and a 2 year old, and her husband did farm work, which was 6 days a week except for winter, when he was unemployed. She had no idea how she was going to manage child care and offered me free room and board so long as I arranged my school/work schedule so I could provide child care for my nieces.
I registered for classes at the local community college and began job hunting. To this day I consider Ontario, Oregon, the butthole of Oregon and Idaho. At the time I moved there, there was no public transit. The biggest employers in the area were the hospital, WalMart, and Ore-Ida. I had worked as retail management, and done administrative office work, but wasn't getting any responses to my job applications. If I wanted to have money to move once my sister finished nursing school, I needed a job.
I was desperate when I filled out the application to be a security guard at the Ore-Ida potato factory, and never thought I would get an interview, much less be hired. I was barely 20, had restrictions on my availability, and am a 5'3" female. But I was and worked there the entire time I lived in Ontario, almost 2 years. I spent most of my time in the guard shack at the entrance to the plant's parking lot. Once or twice a shift I would "do rounds" which consisted of driving the security truck and walking a predefined route around the plant. We had a stick like device that we had to run over device strips at various locations through the route, that recorded the date and time we were at each spot to prove we were completing the circuit as required.
The primary responsibilities of the job, besides completing the observational circuit, were the following: - One wall in the guard shack had photos of problem people that were not allowed on site. Sometimes they were not allowed on site at all, sometimes they were not allowed on site during specific shifts. These were almost 100% due to domestic violence issues. If the person wasn't allowed on site during 2 out of the 3 shifts, it was because the person they had the domestic violence situation with also worked at the plant, but was assigned a different shift. Security was not supposed to take any action to actually prevent the person from accessing the property, other than politely asking the person to leave when they first came towards the entrance, and not to let them through the gate if driving. If the person proceeded anyway, or would not leave, we were supposed to call the police. - If there was a medical emergency, we were required to either drive the injured person to the hospital if an ambulance couldn't be waited for and there wasn't a safety auditor on site, or drive the safety auditor and the injured person to the hospital. If an ambulance was called and arrived, we need to lead them to the location in the factory of the person having the medical emergency. - The factory has an onsite waste water treatment plant, and there are enough hazardous materials for serious risks and potential for dangerous environmental situations to occur. Enough so that any incident at the plant that required response from the fire department was a priority over any other location in the city. The fire department would get redirected to the plant even if they were responding to something else first. If a hazmat situation occurred, security had the list of all the employees that were hazmat certified, kept some hazmat suits (I assumed the safety auditors had some as well), and would lead the fire department and other government officials to the area where the hazmat emergency was occurring. - When completing the circuit I mentioned before, we had a couple of responsibilities. We needed to keep an eye out for spools of wire or other salvageable materials being thrown over the fence so they could be recovered and report the employee if we saw them in the act. We also were warned to watch out in certain locations, because we might run into employees having sex in certain stairwells. Because that had happened to other security guards before.
When I left Ontario and gave notice, my boss offered me a junior supervisor position to get me to stay. He hadn't had anyone in that position for years, because he felt it wasn't needed. But it would have given me a raise. I said no. I didn't want to stay in Ontario, and while that was more than reason enough, a few months earlier my boss had kissed me. I did not want him to kiss me, I did nothing to prompt it, and he was married with children. I couldn't get out of that town fast enough.
Ever since I got a job as a security guard I can’t take heist movies seriously anymore.

The Comprehensive Guide to Conducting a Safety Audit in the Workplace
Workplace safety is a fundamental concern for every organization, irrespective of the industry. To ensure that employees are protected from potential hazards and that the company complies with relevant regulations, it is crucial to regularly assess workplace safety. This is where safety audits come into play.
Tumblr media
A safety audit is a systematic review of an organization’s safety policies, procedures, and practices. It is designed to identify potential risks and hazards, evaluate compliance with legal and regulatory standards, and recommend corrective actions to create a safer workplace. In this comprehensive guide, we will walk through the key aspects of conducting an effective safety audit in the workplace, from preparation to follow-up.
Why Are Safety Audits Important?
Safety audits serve several critical functions in a business environment:
Risk Identification: One of the core objectives of a safety audit is to identify risks before they lead to accidents or injuries. These risks could include anything from faulty machinery and unsafe work practices to inadequate emergency exits.
Regulatory Compliance: Governments and regulatory bodies such as OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) require companies to adhere to certain safety standards. A safety audit helps ensure that your organization is compliant with these regulations, reducing the risk of fines or legal actions.
Protecting Employees: A safe working environment is a basic right for employees. Regular safety audits foster a safer workspace and reduce the risk of workplace injuries, which can have a profound impact on employee morale and productivity.
Cost Savings: While safety audits require an investment of time and resources, they can save companies significant costs by preventing accidents, legal fees, and compensation claims. In the long term, a proactive approach to workplace safety always proves to be more cost-effective.
Key Steps in Conducting a Safety Audit
1. Planning and Preparation
A successful safety audit begins with thorough planning and preparation. This stage involves determining the scope and objectives of the audit. Are you looking to conduct a full-scale audit or a more focused review on specific areas, such as fire safety, machinery, or hazardous materials? Define your goals clearly to ensure the audit addresses the organization’s specific needs.
During this stage, gather all relevant safety documentation, including safety policies, incident reports, training records, and previous audit findings. This documentation provides a baseline for auditors to understand existing safety practices and track improvements over time.
2. Forming the Audit Team
The next step involves assembling an audit team. Ideally, this team should include individuals with diverse knowledge of the workplace, including safety managers, operations staff, and in some cases, external safety consultants. The diversity of perspectives allows for a more comprehensive assessment of safety risks.
External auditors can offer an objective viewpoint and bring expertise in identifying risks that internal staff may overlook. However, having internal employees on the team ensures that the audit aligns with the unique operational context of the organization.
3. Workplace Inspection
Once the team is in place, the core of the audit— the workplace inspection—begins. This is a physical assessment of the environment, equipment, and operations. The team inspects machinery, electrical systems, safety signage, lighting, ventilation, and any areas where employees could be exposed to hazards.
Workplace inspection also involves checking employee adherence to safety protocols. Are workers using the proper protective equipment? Are safety guidelines being followed when operating machinery or handling hazardous materials? By closely observing these factors, the audit team can identify gaps in compliance.
4. Review of Policies and Procedures
In addition to the physical inspection, a safety audit includes a review of the organization’s safety policies and procedures. These documents should be up to date, easy to understand, and in line with the latest regulatory requirements. Common areas of review include:
Emergency evacuation plans
Incident reporting procedures
Use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
Training and onboarding programs related to safety
This stage ensures that the organization’s safety policies are comprehensive and that employees are aware of them.
5. Employee Interviews and Surveys
Employees are often the best source of insight into the everyday safety issues they face. Conducting interviews or anonymous surveys can provide valuable information about safety concerns that may not be evident during a physical inspection.
Questions could focus on how safe employees feel in the workplace, whether they have received adequate safety training, and whether they know the procedures for reporting hazards or accidents.
6. Analysis and Report Generation
Once the inspection and reviews are complete, the audit team analyzes the data and compiles their findings into a detailed report. The report should outline areas of non-compliance, potential risks, and areas for improvement. Recommendations should be practical, achievable, and prioritize high-risk areas.
This report will serve as the roadmap for implementing safety improvements and ensuring ongoing compliance with regulations.
7. Implementing Corrective Actions
With the audit findings in hand, it’s time to take action. Depending on the severity of the risks identified, corrective measures may range from simple fixes (e.g., updating signage) to more complex interventions (e.g., replacing outdated machinery).
It is essential to assign responsibility for implementing each recommendation, set deadlines, and establish a system for tracking progress. Clear communication between management and employees is crucial to ensure that everyone understands the changes being implemented and why they are necessary.
8. Follow-Up and Continuous Monitoring
A safety audit is not a one-time event. It is part of a continuous improvement process. After the corrective actions have been implemented, conduct follow-up audits to verify that the issues have been resolved and that new risks have not emerged.
Moreover, regular safety audits (e.g., annually or bi-annually) should be scheduled to ensure that safety standards are maintained over time. Continuous monitoring and reassessment are key to creating a culture of safety within the organization.
Best Practices for a Successful Safety Audit
Create a Safety-First Culture: Building a culture where safety is a priority starts with leadership. Employees should feel comfortable reporting safety concerns without fear of retaliation, and safety should be integrated into every aspect of the business.
Use Checklists: A checklist of safety standards can ensure that the audit is thorough and covers all necessary aspects. This could include emergency exits, first aid availability, proper use of PPE, and machine guarding.
Incorporate Technology: Digital tools, such as safety audit software, can streamline the audit process by organizing data, automating reporting, and providing real-time insights into workplace safety.
Involve Employees: Employees should not only be participants in the audit process but also be encouraged to take ownership of workplace safety. Involving employees in safety discussions and training sessions can empower them to contribute to the overall safety of the organization.
Track Metrics: Use metrics such as incident rates, near misses, and employee feedback to measure the effectiveness of safety programs and identify areas for ongoing improvement.
Conclusion
A safety audit is a powerful tool for ensuring a safe and compliant work environment. By identifying risks, enhancing safety protocols, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement, companies can protect their employees, reduce operational risks, and ensure long-term success. Conducting regular safety audits is not only a legal requirement but also a smart business practice that pays off in improved safety outcomes, employee morale, and cost savings.
