#firbolg age chart

Nobody knows how Firbolg age scales and it’s THROWIN’ ME OFF. I initially got confused because people kept calling Caduceus Clay “Mentally a teenager” which confused me. 30 is adulthood for Firbolg, so if he’s between 80-100 shouldn’t he be older mentally? I kept looking, and then I was seeing people say he’s mentally anywhere from 20-25. Young, but definitely not a teenager. So here’s my shitty math trying to work things out. Keep in mind I’m rounding a lot of numbers here for simplicity. This isn’t a college essay, it’s an DND Bisexual doing math on Tumblr. This isn’t supposed to be perfect; The idea is to help people understand the mental ages of Firbolg for the sake of aging their own OCs.
Tl;wr: Here’s a link to a google spread sheet of the ages.
If you wanna see my thoughts (and disclaimers in the hopes CR fans aren’t gonna get mad at me), see below the cut!
In a lot of fantasy media I know, fantasy races tend to get through childhood faster than humans do. For example, let’s say a human is fully mature at 18 and live on average for 82 years. That means roughly 22% of a human life is spent as a child. The only confirmed numbers we have regarding Firbolg ages is that 30 is adulthood and they live on average for 500 years. That means roughly 6% of a Firbolg life is spent as a child. If we wanted things to be more proportional, 110 would be the adult age for a Firbolg. But that’s not where we are. Where we are, there’s a lot of gap we need to fill, so we have to slow things down mentally. Firbolg spend a lot less time being children, so they need to spend a lot more time being adults.
Here’s another age to consider, which is being elderly. 65 is considered elderly for a human. So a human will spend roughly 22% of their life being elderly. This is the same amount of time spent being a child. So I’m going to apply that same logic to Firbolg and say that they’d spend 6% of their life being elderly. This would make any Firbolg the ages of 470 and above elderly. One more easy anchor point to find is mid-life, 41 and 250.
So here’s our numbers so far laid out:
-18 = 30
-41 = 250
-65 = 470
Now, that’s an even 23 years up and down for a human and 220 up and down for a Firbolg. When doing my math the sides got a little out of count because I didn’t want to be working with decimals, but with a bit more dividing, subtracting, adding, and rounding we can roughly get the chart seen above. The process was basically a repeat process of subtracting, dividing, and adding. For example; 250 - 30 = 220. 220/2 = 110. 30 + 110 = 140. 250 + 110 = 360.
110/2 = 55. 30 + 55 = 85. 85 + 55 = 140. 140 + 55 = 195.
So on and so forth until I got to adding my 3/2 (rounding and adjusting to avoid decimals) on the human side.
So THAT is my comprehensive Firbolg age chart. It’s obviously not perfect, and I’m sure a much better mathematician could easily explain all the millions of ways I goofed it up, but I think it’s better than working from raw fractions due to how disproportionate early and late life are between races.
And before anyone gets upset: I am NOT trying to argue that people are wrong about Caduceus’ mental age. 1: This is a fantasy world. The math between mental age and lived years isn’t important, you can make it whatever you want. You’re playing pretend and you can pretend however you want. 2: Caduceus is a character from a STORY. The hypothetical numbers are not nearly as important as how he is shown in that story. Cad is meant to be a young man leaving his home and seeing the world for the first time, adjusting his worldview as he does. It’s about learning to grow up as a young adult and realizing what your parents told you, and what you’ve experienced in your niche part of the world, isn’t always true when applied to the big picture. Cad’s relative age matters with how his story is told, not technical numbers. The discussion of his age is just what made me question the age chart.
What I saw most often was the simple division of 250 = 42, 125 = 21. I just didn’t like the logic that 3 years for a human would suddenly equal 90 years for a Firbolg, only for the next 21 years to equal another 125. That’s not slowing the rate of of mental aging, that’s slamming a brick wall and then running around it. So the numbers I came up with just seem more evened out to me.
Anyways, I hope at least one person find this helpful!
#If you actually read all that I applaud you#it's midnight shgasad#Anyways this is all to say that my PC Fen should be 113 yrs old NOT 60 hgsfjahg#I dunno what the fuck math I was doing when I made him that young#Should I send this to my DM while he's on vacation? I saw this great DnD inktober chart from @berntkat but I can’t draw so I’m just making DnD characters with backstories and posting them instead. These are up for grabs if anyone wants to use them. If you do, let me know, I’d love to hear about their adventures! You can also find more here.
DnDtober 7 - Second Song at Dusk - Tabaxi Paladin
Nickname: Dusk/Dusky Age: 44 Height: 6’1” Weight: 150 lbs Eventual Order: Order of the Ancients Background: Far Traveler
Description: Dusk resembles an african wild cat. She has reddish brown fur with faint spotting on her chest and limbs. Somewhat unusual for a tabaxi, she also has blue eyes. Each ear is adorned with two gold hoops and she wears a matching gold collar. Despite her slim frame, Dusk is surprisingly strong.
Backstory: After a long labor, Dusk was born just as the evening birds began their second song with one another. She was named for this occasion, though it would have further meaning for her life’s path. For most of her life she moved from city to city in search of stories, adventure, and occasional mischief. However, as she approached 40, she started to find the cities held less interest for her. It was all starting to seem the same. It was the same capers and the same stories, just with a different cast. Looking for something new, she turned to the places in between the cities. Previously she’d never given much thought to what lay beyond the road but now she headed into the wilds. There she spent several years exploring alone or with clans of druids, firbolgs, and centaurs. Through them she learned of the threats faced by the wild places of the world, both magical and mundane, and decided to fight to preserve their ever changing mysteries.
Personality: Impulsive in her youth, Dusk has learned to be more cautious with age, although it still gets the better of her on occasion. She hasn’t quite reached the stern matronly voice of experience stage yet, but she’s getting closer than she realizes. Dusk also laughs a lot, a strong deep laugh with just a rumble of a purr beneath it.
Note: Due to time crunches, the character sheets may be incomplete or have errors. I tried my best, but double check before using them.

DnDtober 1 - Myron Lostwood - Firbolg Sorcerer
Age: 50 Height: 7’2” Weight: 225 lbs Magic Source: Wild Magic Background: Outlander Description: Myron’s on the lanky side, the fact that his clothes are always a little too big for him makes him look even lankier. In truth, a lot of the time he’d just assume disappear into his clothes if he could, but it’s pretty hard not to stand out when you’re over seven feet tall. He has pale skin with a blueish grey tint and it’s very obvious when he blushes, which he does a lot. His eyes are green with brown flecks in them and he has long reddish hair that he wears in a braid down his back. Myron is trying really hard to grow a beard but it’s kind of patchy, the goatee bit is coming in nicely though.
Backstory: Myron’s had a long struggle with trying to control his magic. The clan has been exasperated at times, but always supportive. Recently, he felt that he’d finally gained control at last and while he was proudly demonstrating this for his mentor and several elders, his magic went awry and ended up dealing necrotic damage to all of them. Everyone was fine, but Myron felt ashamed of what had happened. He wants nothing more than to be a protector for his clan, but right now he’s more likely to hurt than to help. Dejected, he takes a few belongings, including his favorite green scarf made by his mother, and leaves in the middle of the night.
Personality: He’s what you might call adorkable. He certainly doesn’t try to make people like him, in fact he’d rather be alone a lot of the time, but people seem to be drawn to him none the less. Of course this only adds to the fear that something bad might happen to his new friends and he might be the cause. Otherwise, he’s quiet and gets just as much enjoyment from sitting on the sidelines watching other people laugh and talk as he would if he joined it. Their happiness is his happiness too.

Time for another pair. This time, a firbolg named Birel and half-orc named Ylva are stuck working for a criminal organization but these two ladies in love are working together to get out.
DnDtober 15 - Birel - Firbolg Rogue
Age: 45 Height: 7’1” Weight: 260 lbs Eventual Archetype: Thief Background: Criminal
Description: Birel has pale grey skin since most of her time is spent in the hideout or going out at night. Even for a Firbolg, she has thick hair. Dark hair covers her arms and legs, something that sometimes makes her feel self conscious. She keeps her hair long, usually in a braid or bun to keep it out of her eyes. Her clothing and armor is a bit of a mish-mash of whatever she’s found that will fit her and a few things she’s saved enough money to have custom made to fit properly.
Backstory: As a child she watched merchants and travelers as they crossed through the woods near her clan. As an adult, she decided she wanted to follow them and see what life outside the forest was like. A naive outsider was easy prey to less scrupulous people and soon she found herself in over her head with the wrong people. In exchange for “paying off her debts” they gave her some training as a rogue and put her to work. She’s been biding her time, but with a little help, she thinks she can make a break and try to escape the city.
She has a dagger with an antler handle, one of the few things she brought with her to the city that she still has in her possession. Every now and then she tries to talk to the birds in the city and asks them to send messages to her family, even though she knows they can’t.
Personality: Once naive and gullible, she’s had to learn about the world quickly. She’s hardened, cautious, and knows how to push to get what she want if she has too. Despite all that, there’s something of her former self still lurking underneath and if circumstances were different, more of the hopeful and kind person she used to be might return.
Birel and Ylva - Because of her imposing size, Birel was often tasked with being a bouncer for fights and making sure the fighting stayed in the ring. She saw a lot of Ylva’s fights and could sense a kindred spirit, someone else who was an outsider, trapped in this life, and possibly wanting to get out. They struck up a friendship that in time turned into something more and now they’re ready to start a new life together.
Note: I’m running out of steam a bit so right now there’s just a blank character sheet as a place holder. Hopefully I’ll go back at some point and replace it with a complete one.
