Scotland Fix of the Day: Getting around Scotland very often brings to mind winding roads meandering through Highland glens. But with 11,602 total miles of coastline and 93 inhabited islands — as well as countless loch and lochans — boats ought to come to mind just as easily. Casting about in my Scotland collection I was struck by how many times boats defined a place, setting the stage in so many ways for the nature of life there. This collection shares some favorites: 1. On the CalMac ferry as the Outer Hebrides come into view, always the beginning of interesting exploration. 2. A boat on the bank across the bay from Lagavulin distillery on Islay, the aroma of seaweed a hint at the flavor of the whisky. 3. Looking up mysterious Loch Ness in the evening, wishing I were out on that small boat in such calmness. 4. Hauling cattle off the Isle of Ensay from Summer grazing on a small barge. (Interesting job, loading cattle from the beach on a barge.) 5. Arriving on Iona on the ferry from Fionnphort to explore the abbey. 6. The Lord of the Glens cruising down the Caledonian Canal, built in the early 1800’s for commerce and to carry British Navy frigates across Scotland from the North Sea to the Atlantic. #scotland #highlands #outlander #epic_landscape #bestofscotland #hiddenscotland #thehighlandcollective #scotland_highlights #ig_scotland #visitscotland #scotlandgreatshots #scottishislands #scotland_greatshots #igersscotland #unlimitedscotland #thescottishcollective #simplyscotland #moodyscotland #hebrides #lovetheouterhebrides — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/WCkcPyH

#mull and #iona today. Car sorta died at #fionnphort for awhile then spontaneously started working again. Came home in utterly insane wind and rain. Was a fine #adventure overall. 9/10. One point deducted for car comedy. #octoberholidays (at Lochend, City of Edinburgh) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVRDDbGIvY3/?utm_medium=tumblr

20 June 2019 - Isle of Mull, Scotland
Our first stop off the ferry from Oban was the Isle of Mull! A bus took us from Craignure to Fionnphort, where we then caught another ferry to Staffa. Along the way, we spotted some seals and some deer, along with beautiful glens and rolling hills.

Gettysburg Dime Museum
Today I went to the Gettysburg Dime Museum, a 19th-century-style museum of curiosities! This is their final season: they close November 17, 2018, so I wanted to get in to see it now. They’re open on Saturdays.

El Chupacabra: The Chupacabra’s first appearance in the United States was said to have been in Miami, Florida [of course it was Florida!] on March 11, 1996, when it attacked some animals. Researcher Virgilio Sanchez-Ocejo of the Miami UFO Center took plastic casts of the tracks left by the beast and concluded that the tracks belonged to an unknown, probably extraterrestrial creature.

Bigfoot Cast: Left foot cast made by Roger Patterson in 1957 at Bluff Creek, the location in northern California where he shot the famous film pictured above.
Sasquatch Lives! Certified Genuine Bigfoot Hair: This specimen was collected from a trap near Skookumchuck Lake, in Washington state as verified by witnesses. This specimen is lot 019 of 100.

Cast of a Chupacabra footprint from Puerto Rico: it was found in caguas puerto rico in a nearby mountain kinda wooded area and real hot. there was a stream etc. jungle like atmosphere. i do remember seeing huge holes in the forest kind like something was living down there in sort of cave like. it was scary. the exact date was june 18th 2005 i looked up some info as i always write things down.

Fossilized Faery: These are the supposed skeletal remains of what can only be described as a miniature, winged, humanoid-type creature, commonly referred to in storybooks as a faery. Scientists, however, tell us that such creatures cannot possibly exist--yet here it is, nonetheless. These tiny and fragile remains were uncovered accidentally at Tomore Granite Quarry, in Fionnphort, Scotland, in the spring of 1837. Needless to say, this tiny fossilized skeleton caused quite a stir in the local community, as well as internationally, when it was originally discovered. The controversy and speculation only intensified when the remains were examined by local noted anthropologist Dr. Phil McCraken, who then publicly announced his findings.

Der Wolpertinger: Found in the forests of Bavaria, Wolpertingers are part of a larger family of horned mammals that exist throughout the Germanic regions of Europe. According to legend, the best way to catch a Wolpertinger is to be a beautiful young woman, since Wolpertingers have a weakness for female beauty. The woman should go out into a forest at night, while the moon is full, and find a secluded nook where a Wolpertinger is likely to be. Hopefully, the creature will soon reveal itself. When it does, the woman should expose her breasts. This will cause the Wolpertinger to instantly fall into a stupor, allowing it to easily be bagged. [So you’re telling me a Wolpertinger is a hornier version of a unicorn? Pun unintended but enjoyed.]

This horseshoe, discovered in the Old Dutch Churchyard of Sleepy Hollow, is believed to have fallen from the steed of the Headless Horseman, the ghost of the unknown Hessian soldier who rides forth each night in search of his head. Below is a casting of the Headless Horseman’s headstone.

Scotland Fix of the Day: Iona Abbey on a quiet evening after the day’s visitors have taken the last ferry back over to Fionnphort (glowing bright across the sound) leaving the island quiet. What I find most remarkable is that this place is still a working church, services still bring light to the windows at night. Iona was probably a Celtic holy site centuries before St. Columba came in 563 AD to found his mission. By about 800 AD St. Martin’s cross had been erected. Four centuries after that the Lord of the Isles was funding the monastery we see today. And then it falls into ruins only to be rebuilt in the 20th century as the heart of the worldwide Iona Community. More than the abbey itself it is the enduring religious tradition that stands out on Iona. #scotland #iona https://instagr.am/p/B_dzGY5p3vi/
