Masking, YCMAL edition
So, after the general info on masking, here's how it specifically looks like and impacts some of the 'verse's characters.
I think I kind of need to preface this with the fact that a lot of my characters have neurodivergent traits because, well. I do. I don't know how a neurotypical person thinks, the same way a neurotypical person doesn't know how a neurodivergent person thinks. You can read about the experience, and, despite shitty stereotypes to the contrary, you can empathize with it, but the wiring of the brain is literally different.
So when I'm listing characters here as neurodivergent, I either a) set out to write them that way or b) in hindsight can't deny that their experiences are written through a very specifically neurodivergent lens. Someone not being explicitly labelled as ND doesn't necessarily mean they aren't, I just..really don't want to go back through my entire 'verse applying diagnoses the same way I happily slap an MBTI or enneagram or kindergarten teacher/assassin label on them, because that feels wrong.
But if you're neurodivergent and see something in a particular character that makes you feel seen, I'm not going to tell you 'nah man, they're actually neurotypical'. Especially because literally every single one of them was written by someone neurodivergent.
Anyway! Canonically ND characters and their masks:
David: masks extensively. Generally does his best for 'unobtrusive, pay no attention', unsure why it doesn't seem to work (mostly because he's talented and beautiful, so it seems less 'unobtrusive' and more 'I think I'm better than you', which isn't helped by the fact that often when the mask does slip, it's to show frustration, contempt, or disdain -- think at the All-Star Game his rookie year, or several points early on with Jake. Also does not help that he often does think he's better than people.)
Bryce: Still laughing at 'straightsona' used to describe Bryce out with his teammates, because it's perfect. His 'I don't care, I'm hot as shit, bitches love me' dickhead behaviour was him picking up those behaviours from popular peers and teammates over the years, partly mistaking that for the reason they were popular (rather than being seen as boy kings making them callous or arrogant), and partly viewing them as the exemplar of someone no one would predict was gay. Jared's worst enemy.
Speaking of, honourable mention to Raf Sanchez AND Julius Halla here, Jared's going around collecting neurodivergent loved ones all through IJ(aoe).
James: 'unobtrusive, pay no attention', much more successfully than David, partly because he has a mouthpiece in the form of Finn. His crashing after road trips is partly extended overstimulation and change, but it's also having to wear the mask more extensively, because he has much less time to himself, especially when he shared a room. (He's mostly unmasked with Finn, that's why Finn is his exception to a lot of No People things, but he wasn't at the beginning).
Holden: Also kind of 'I don't care, I'm hot as shit, bitches love me', but...ironically? He doesn't mask as much as the others, and because of that, he frequently drives away people who originally seem to like him and wonders why. Has been described as 'a lot'.
Fiona: Literally will not leave the house without a full face of makeup and a pair of heels or she'll feel exposed and vulnerable, and putting her make up on is how she prepares to be Outside Fiona. She's very perky and friendly at work. The second she gets home it's an 'uggggh' moment and straight into the shower to decompress/literally unmask. She's more aware than any of the guys that she's putting on a performance, partly because she grew up with all those 'girls are expected to be...' followed by a list of things she definitively wasn't. Has also been described as 'a lot'.
Finn: And How May I Be of Service To You Today?
Now this is where it gets kind of interesting because like -- people often have facades. That's not a neurodivergent only thing. People can be fake, or posture, or pretend to be something they're not. Mike, for example, will lean into the big macho asshole when he's put on the defensive, Willy is Always Performing, Thomas is sunshine even when he doesn't really feel like being that, Robbie will play the buffoon to make people laugh if he thinks they need it, half of Joey's rants are playing to the cheap seats.
Like, there's a difference between pretending you're somebody else sometimes, or behaving inauthentically, and full on 'yeah, they're masking'.
But Georgie is masking. Georgie is, at all times, evaluating his surroundings, monitoring people's emotions and reactions (especially to him), and behaving in the manner he thinks is most likely to lead to his being liked. And he was already doing that when Robbie met him, but it's intensified significantly since.
I think that's where the biggest difference lies between some of the above ND characters and Georgie? David, for example, doesn't care if he's liked (like, yes he does, but also...no). The mask is for safety/to minimize vulnerability. David's in particular was tweaked to get praise and avoid criticism from his parents (didn't work), teachers, and coaches (worked much better), not so much for his peers.
But Georgie's isn't for safety. Georgie doesn't manage his behaviour to avoid harm, Georgie wants people to like him. And he's discovered that people don't seem to like him when he does certain things, or acts certain ways, or needs things from them, so he just...doesn't do those things.
Finn's interesting because he has both forms. Please like him it'll break his heart if you don't.

Cape Breton Regional Municipality requests further cleanup assistance
Post-tropical storm Fiona has left lasting scars on many Cape Bretoners, especially those who have faced destruction of their homes.
"It scared the living daylights out of me. I mean, between 5 and 5:30, the wind was just crazy," said resident Todd Dezagiacomo.
Wind gusts were so strong it left a massive hole in his roof. Being without power or a phone line, he says he is struggling to repair it.
"I'm a pensioner too. I've been retired the last couple of years, so I can use any help I can get," he added.
Across town, Alex Campbell's backyard has been left a mess, and his garage is a total loss.
"How do you replace that? We can't get insurance on our houses, we can’t afford it," said Campbell.
He says he's on his fourth day without power, and the losses are adding up as the food in his freezer has spoiled.
"There's no food left in them, it's all melting. You have to fire it away. There's no hot water to wash, you can't even get a shower," he said.
His neighbor Alex Macintyre is in the same boat.
"I was trying to go skimpy on the food, so I wouldn't lose too much. I bought a lot of canned food, but I still lost about $90 worth of food you store in the fridge, it's just no good at all," said Macintyre.
Nova Scotia Power says damage in Cape Breton is primarily due to hundreds of broken poles and downed lines from the fallen trees.
More than 65,000 customers have been affected in the area, with some restoration times not until the middle of next week.
"We know how many people are working to restore our community," said Cape Breton Regional Municipality Mayor Amanda McDougall.
She says she has been appealing to provincial and federal governments for further assistance.
"We need more support by the way of troops on the ground. We need the authorization and physical power to help remove major amounts of debris from their properties. We need access to fuel and power," she said.
Liberal MLA Fred Tilley is calling for better accommodations for those living in Sydney Mines and on the Northside.
"Small investments from government right now could go a long way to improve the safety of all the residents of Cape Breton for sure," said Tilley.

Charco Press is bringing new Latin American fiction to British readers
Crossing the pond Charco Press is bringing new Latin American fiction to British readers
Literature from the region has long been overlooked in the UK
Books, arts and culture Prospero
“THE ADVENTURES of China Iron”, one of six translated works of fiction shortlisted for this year’s International Booker Prize, is an anarchic reformulation of “Martín Fierro”, a 19th-century Argentine gaucho poem. When Martín, the cutthroat cowboy, is conscripted, China, his adolescent wife, jumps aboard a wagon with a Scottish pioneer called Liz and embarks on her own journey of discovery. Liz lops off China’s golden tresses, puts her in male uniform and seduces her. She introduces her to the English language and to a globalising world of trade, railways and industry that promises to sweep aside the picaresque gaucho way of life.
More than a playful historical pastiche, in the hands of Gabriela Cabezón Cámara (pictured)—and through China’s eyes—Argentina’s pampas come alive. The landscape swarms with armadillos and rodents. Rivers burst their banks, sweeping herds of cattle away. As the numbness drilled into her by poverty and brutality gradually subsides, China comes to behold the power of the natural world and its native defenders. Fiona Mackintosh and Iona Macintyre, both academics at the University of Edinburgh, skilfully translate her transformation from camp-follower into shamanic, canoe-borne warrior. As her motley band slips upstream and out of Argentina’s official history, China’s chatty Spanglish narration becomes more languid, strewn with Guaraní terms for plants and riverine currents.
The subject matter—a Scottish-Argentine love affair, and the mind-altering power of translation—is the perfect fit for Charco Press. (Charco, meaning “puddle”, is slang in several Latin American countries for the Atlantic Ocean.) The Edinburgh-based publishing house was born four years ago “from passion but also a deep frustration,” says Carolina Orloff, its founder and editor. She grew up steeped in the flourishing literary scene of Buenos Aires; the bookshop her family ran counted Jorge Luis Borges among its regular customers. But on moving to Britain she was struck by how Latin American literature, beyond giants such as Gabriel García Márquez, was almost “terra incognita” to British readers. Assembling a formidable team of literary translators, Ms Orloff and her partner Samuel McDowell set out to bring outstanding voices from contemporary Latin American letters— usually already prize-winners in their original Spanish or Portuguese—to a wider audience.
Of their 20 books published since 2017, “The Adventures of China Iron”, with its hallucinatory passages, comes closest to magical realism. Other titles, each with a striking abstract cover by Pablo Font, an Argentine designer, defy easy categorisation. Margarita García Robayo’s “Holiday Heart” explores the estrangement (with each other and their homeland) of a Colombian couple in Miami and Connecticut. In “Trout, Belly Up”, Rodrigo Fuentes laces together short stories set in rural Guatemala (a relapsed alcoholic loses his dog, gunmen threaten a seaside village, a fish farm fails) with a sense of menace and tragedy. The narrator of “Loop”—the first work by Brenda Lozano, a Mexican author, to be translated into English—weaves in and out of subjects and styles as she waits for her boyfriend to return from overseas. “Resistance”, by Julián Fuks, portrays a family in exile in Brazil in the 1970s. “They’re literally worlds apart,” emphasises Ms Orloff. “I wanted to move away from the clichés and the generalisations that I think have been ingrained way too long.”
The only British publisher dedicated to authors from Latin America, Charco Press is the standard-bearer for a new, international wave of interest in the region’s literature. Also shortlisted for this year’s International Booker Prize is “Hurricane Season”, an unconventional detective story by Fernanda Melchor set in small-town Mexico. Its publisher, Fitzcarraldo Editions, which was founded in London in 2014, and translator, Sophie Hughes, also landed a spot on last year’s shortlist with “The Remainder” by Alia Trabucco Zerán, an examination of the ghosts of post-dictatorship Chile.
Latin American writing enjoys a higher profile across the Atlantic. Valeria Luiselli’s novel of 2019, “Lost Children Archive”, her first in English, was shaped by her experiences working as a court translator for Central American children separated from their parents at the Mexican border. It was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. There is also an appetite for relatively unknown authors, regardless of their direct contemporary relevance. Major new translations of Antonio di Benedetto, a mid-century Argentine existentialist, the peculiarly endearing short stories of Juan Carlos Onetti (from Uruguay), and the 19th-century Brazilian satirist Machado de Assis have been published to wide acclaim in the United States since 2016.
The Edinburgh publishing house, which is supported by the Arts Council and Creative Scotland, nevertheless remains an underdog in a field of underdogs. While 15% of fiction sold in Europe is in translation, this proportion falls to scarcely 4% in Britain and is lower still in America. Charco Press titles often sell fewer than 3,000 copies. But Ms Orloff describes Charco’s inclusion on this year’s International Booker shortlist as an encouragement to take further gambles on unusual titles. Ms Cabezón Cámara has since sold the rights to “The Adventures of China Iron” in ten countries, including Egypt, Croatia and Greece. The book will also be available to readers in North America—where Charco signed a distribution deal in late 2019—from October 13th. The proverbial puddle seems to be shrinking.

Fic snippet, Fiona&Holden(/James); from the series that never was
So one of my favourite things is when characters twist out of my grasp and announce themselves to be something different than I initially thought they were. I absolutely love it. The moments I'm aware that I am not in control of the story are some of the very best ones as a writer, because I don't know what's coming, and that's exciting.
But it's also annoying as hell. Because everything I've written that comes next? Yeah, it's not canon anymore. Of all my series, Cards on the Table had the most material already written before I started to post the series, some of it occurring significantly later in the narrative, because Holden came easy, but James was proving recalcitrant, so I wrote a lot of scenes, mostly dialogue (dialogue almost always comes first for me), trying to get my finger on his pulse.
And not a bit of it is canon anymore, even though it's still the same Holden, and mostly the same James (I think the biggest pivot point was when I realized that at his core, James isn't driven by anger, as I originally thought. It looks like that on the surface, especially at the beginning of the series, but it's not anger, it's irritability from being constantly fucking overstimulated and exhausted. He's Fed Up. And okay, yes, angry, but that is a Holden Chase specific trigger he's responding to, not his general state of being.)
ANYWAY.
This scene was jossed a long time ago, but I held onto it, because some scenes you're just fond of. And I'm sharing it for the same reason.
I meant to post this after the 'Fiona knows' reveal but it completely slipped my brain until now.
This is completely AU, thanks to James pulling a Bryce on me, but in another universe, just slightly different, Fiona still makes sure her knowing is a mic drop moment.
(Context for the scene, he has told her he's been fucking a teammate, because he's the same as he was from the start, and so is his brain-to-mouth filter, but he hasn't identified who)
(Forgive me, this preamble is longer than the fic snippet)
“How long did we go out, exactly?” Holden asks.
Fionas quiet. “Uh,” she says. “Let me see, it was right before prom—“
Holden winces. She forgives, but she does not forget.
“Six months?” Fiona says. “Give or take?”
“Okay,” Holden says. Still his longest relationship, then. He’s got time.
“Share with the class?” Fiona says.
“Can’t,” Holden says.
“Oh, it’s mystery man,” Fiona says flatly.
“Sorry,” Holden says. He really would tell her if he could.
“Minnesotan Mystery Man,” Fiona says.
“Yeah, I—“ Holden says. “Wait, what?”
“Captain of the Whalers Mystery Man,” Fiona says.
They actually only have one Minnesotan, as far as Holden’s aware, so she made her point the first time, but he does appreciate the commitment to the bit.
“How’d you know?” Holden says.
“Babe,” Fiona says. “You are not a subtle person.”
“I think I’m very subtle,” Holden says, but he can’t even finish the sentence without laughing at himself.
“And you stopped complaining about Erickson right around the time you started fucking a teammate,” Fiona says.
“I still complain about him,” Holden protests. “Have you known this whole time?”
“Pretty much,” Fiona says.
“Well,” Holden says. “Fuck.”

July Wrap-Up
I read 25 books in July—how does it never feel like enough? I dove into a long list of brilliant Argentinian literature, from César Aira to María Gainza to Norah Lange. My favorites of that list aren’t piled here, as they were library books: Dead Girls by Selva Almada, translated by Annie McDermott; The Adventures of China Iron by Gabriela Cabezón Cámara, translated by Fiona Mackintosh and Iona Macintyre; and Trafalgar by Angélica Trafalgar, translated by Amalia Gladhart.
I also dove into some brilliant nonfiction, including the memoir essays of World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments by Aimee Nezhukumatathil, illustrated by Fumi Nakamura, and the rich sports stories of Gemma Clarke’s SoccerWomen. Two rich classics to bookend the months: The Voyage Out by Virginia Woolf early on, and The Enchanted Wanderer and Other Stories by Nikolai Leslov, translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. And of course, I was able to read Matrix by Lauren Groff, which comes out this September, and which was queer and wonderful.
Onto August, which should come with beach days and book stacks!

The Adventures of China Iron Review: una emocionante epopeya en miniatura | Libros

Rules: Tag 9 people you’d like to get to know better!
I was tagged by: @likecharity - cheers ;)
Favorite color: I tend to think in colour combinations rather than single colours but I tend to love lighter blues.
Lipstick or chapstick: Neither. I don't think I've ever worn lipstick actually. My tiny little tub of Vaseline is what I cannot live without because I can’t handle dry lips - the tub is teeny; you could probably fit two into a matchbox.
Top 3 ships: Oh goddddd, this is almost worse than being asked my favourite movie or book. It's not possible. I guess the ultimate has always been Harry and Hermione but I didn't quite notice I shipped them until a couple of years after the last book. Two more ships... emmm... Fiona and Eddie in Keen Eddie, cruelly ripped from me after one series before anything could actually happen. And lastly... hmmm. Sylvia and Peter in 3 Men and a Little Lady maybe?  Or Rory and Tristan from Gilmore Girls? Or Andie and Steff from Pretty in Pink? (I apparently have a thing for posh arseholes with hidden vulnerability.) Yeah, I’m not sure what my third is, sorry.
Last song: I listened to two on the bus and can't remember which played second. They were Can't Move On by Wild Youth which is insanely catchy and I also can't wrap my head around them being Irish. The other was Bruises by Chairlift.
Last movie: Sicario 2: Soldado. Not as good as the first and suffered from not having Emily Blunt, but still very good.
Currently reading: Gah... I've lost all ability to concentrate and end up reading six different books at once. Currently managing to concentrate on The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary, The Spy and the Traitor by Ben Macintyre and The Clockmaker's Daughter by Kate Morton. All excellent.
I tag: I don't know 9 people. So, I tag @girlinspacepodcast, @gloriouslinks, @mad-monkie, @elliegoestodownton, @oliviajanemk and @bookscleverness-blog-blog I think a lot of them are gone though :(
