It has been 168 days since the Kuroshitsuji hiatus was announced.

Today, Sebastian let Finny lick the bowl after he finished mixing the chocolate cake batter.

"Oi," A familiar drawl snaps the butler out of his brief mental check of today's chore list. Chin pinched with black gloves. Looking off into nothing.

Currently both the Gardener and Young Master are standing by, all taken care of; bundled up for the winter chill that has hit them hard this year.

The Young Master insisted vehemently to accompany him and Finnian on their wood gathering. Saying all but "I'm completely done with all my work thus far on my studies, I assure you. so let me get out of this blasted stuffy room for once."

Again in the present Sebastian is still mulling over what he'll be shouldered with after their stroll, and so he still doesn't hear (or more like refuses to acknowledge) the chef approaching them, a purpose in his stomping gait as he arrives right in front of the other man.

"Oi, what th'ell you doin', Sebastian, eh?"

He briefly pinches the end of Sebastian's scarf he threw on half-hazardly, violently shakes it for emphasis, then let's it drop again.

All while looking the butler in the eye as if suddenly he wants to have a bout right there in the main entryway.

"You tryin' t'catch yer death on purpose or wot?"

Sebastian practically snorts, but refrains, lips twitching at this sudden appearance of Mother Henning from the usually unbothered and lazy as-all-get-out chef.

"Oh, is there a problem, Bardroy? Would me being a little chilled while going out for but a mere half an hour bother you?"

"Oh you think you'd be just a "little chilled" eh? Thinkin' you wouldn't come back an' end up catchin' a cold or flu, or even bloody pneumonia with 'ow god awful it is out there, eh?"

He waves briefly over to the boys awkwardly standing near by.

"Meanwhile you got them all bundled up fit for endurin' a winter storm!"

"One: They are children and I am not. Two, Bardroy: it certainly is not my first English Winter, trust me, three-"

Bardroy grabs both ends of the loose scarf and this time tugs firmly, making the taller man prattling before him practically fall forward.

But he doesn't.

Bardroy's firm grip makes sure the other man merely is forced right into his face.

Their foreheads knocking gently, as Sebastian's eyes open wider and stare in pure surprise, those thin eyebrows lifted up high for once.

"Listen 'ere, you," Bard growls low, "believe it or not, the deep south o' Arizona an the like get bloody cold as fuck, got it? In the deserts at night a man can freeze t'death before 'e even realizes it. So don't. Fuck. Wiff cold. Don't ya dare go an' fuck with those harsh winter woods, with these boys on tow, an' next thing ya know Finny's gotta carry back a long ass big ol icle of a butler, prolly cryin' all the fuckin' way, too."

He stops. Finally. Panting a little from this tangent out of no where, noticeably getting red in the face too.

And the butler, still enduring having his face pressed into Bard's the entire time... stars to smile.

And his eyes go half lidded again.

Shimmering and dancing with amusement aplenty.

"Ah, so it would bother you to some extent, then. I see."

And he says it so softly it's almost a whisper, or like just a comment he's making to himself.

Growling again the other man pushes this time, in order to straighten Sebastian up and push him a few inches away.

However he doesn't let him go for long. Oh no, the chef proceeds to grumble under his breath (something about "damn stupid pretty boy with no bloody sense a' self preservation I swear-") as he unwraps the butler's scarf from around his neck and then leans in further, almost aggressively thrusting himself up close again, to wind it back round him. Tighter, more hugging his neck, and finishes with tying what is left somehow.

"There, that's better," Bard openly comments, looking still mad about it but now satisfied with himself as he pulls back a little. But quickly, idly, pats the other man's coat front as if to confirm everything is good.

"I'd also suggest a cap o' some kind too, awright. Somethin' like the scarf. Damn the consequences o' messin' up yer pretty hair an' all that, it's about survival and nothin' else, you 'ear me?'

He finally shuts up this time, really meeting Sebastian's eyes this time, and so invested in this he's expecting to see some kind of expression of grat-

Sebastian sweeps in to kiss the man's cheek.

"Thank you dear," he purrs.

And then he's turning back to the boys and trotting to the door with purpose.

"Now. Let's carry on, before we lose anymore daylight, hm? Follow me."

And Sebastian, the Young Master, and Finny are almost out the door.

When the demon hears the familiar loud groan of a man who's just realized his predicament he's gotten himself into coming from back inside.

And Sebastian allows himself the pleasure to grin to himself, eyes shut, looking the picture of a creature who's just won a hard fought battle and all the spoils that entails.

black butler arcs in order of how bad they were for finnian on a personal level

public school: best month of his life he gets to chill at the manor with his friends then watch ciel win at sportsball and then wrangle sheep

curry competition: he meets agni :) new friend

green witch: a lot of stress, but ultimately he received praise from ciel and then ran through the forest at maximum speeds which must have been a little fun

black/red butler: pretty bog-standard finny experience. the epic highs (hanging out with ciel) and lows (pesticide accidents) of working at phantomhive manor

luxury liner: a mostly normal week but imagine the severity of his stomach dropping after he hears "the campania sank" and before he hears "the young master has survived and is safely back in england". he must have been shaking like a leaf for 24 hours from the concentrated shock

blue cult: again a lot of emotional upset but not the worst in the world because everyone remains #phantomhivestrong

noah's ark circus: he gets hit on the head and his hat is ripped :(

Y'know as much as I love Dadbastian stuff focusing on Ciel and Sebastian's relationship, I also really enjoy Dadbastian content with Sebastian and Finnian.

Especially since those two are just so different when it comes to their thoughts and personalities.

I've been thinking of scenarios between the two, such as maybe Sebastian going a bit too far (farther than usual) when scolding Finnian for messing up his job, and he has to make amends somehow (something I'd imagine that, as a demon, he doesn't know jack shit about.)

If you really wanna go the angst route with this have Finny either be captured or put in a coma then Sebastian would really be in a situation—

I had a vision of Leona and Morel visiting Finnian when Gardenia is about a year old during the first snow of the season in Finnian’s home (still workshopping the TWST version of Scotland, okay?)

Like, they’re only staying for two weeks but it’s so cute because they’re all wrapped together with Finnian and his second spouse and Morel’s two half siblings and it’s all so cozy and squishy, especially when Riddle and Rayne come to visit. And it would likely be Gardenia’s first time seeing snow, so it would be even cuter!

Just imagine tiny bundled up Gardenia seeing snow for the first time and giggling when she feels snowflakes land on her cheeks. She’s so precious!!!

But it’s also funny because Leona is a lion and grew up on the savanna. So, he isn’t really built for the cold. Even autumn at NRC was torture for him-

So he’s just standing next to Morel, trembling from the cold despite all of his layers while the shorter woman is completely fine. She had to adjust a tiny bit, but she grew up in cloudier and colder environments, so she’s actually built for this weather.

But the image of the three of them just wandering around in the snow and letting Gardenia attempt to stand in the snow (she didn’t last a second, she was instantly falling on her butt as soon as Morel put her down-) is just so cute to me! And now Finnian has plenty of pictures to enjoy and give to Morel once they have to leave!!!

Chapter 206 prompted some discussion between us two. Here are our thoughts.

Snake has become what has been in the making for some time now: a necessary martyr. It is impossible to imagine the stalemate of the plot moving without him getting attacked - and since he did, now, cross this line, two things can happen. He either survives, or he does not.

It is possible that he survives: Finnian is strong enough to carry him and assist him, and the facility seems to have enough access to medical devices. While the question of operating these devices is left unanswered, there's at least some hope for Snake to make it out alive. That is, if he even can get Snake to a safe enough place without being attacked. Were he to manage surviving, there's no more coming back to anyhow peaceful relationship with Doll for him - and all the more reasons to stick to Ciel who, while questionable in his morals, remains a safer option for Snake.

As for Doll, it is near impossible to feel any sort of compassion for this character. If not for Snake's sacrifice, a child would be attacked and brutally killed. It feels as if this was the final breakdown for Doll's character, one, perhaps, shining some light on how she has always been. The events of the chapter made us reconsider if she was ever a victim of circumstance - such as Snake - or if this ruthlessness regardless of the target was always her character trait.

Most nights you enjoy the feeling of the pounding bass and the sweat-slick bodies at Rita’s, but tonight everything seemed too loud and too close. Finding an unoccupied corner to the right of the bar you close your eyes as you let your head fall back against the wall.

You take several deep breaths before opening your eyes only to find the bane of your existence staring at you from where he sat across the club. You allow yourself a moment to take the Ilyrian in. He’s ditched his usual fighting leathers and is instead wearing a fitted black shirt. It leaves little to the imagination when it comes to his impressive physique. You let your eyes drift back up to his face and when you’re once again looking into his hazel eyes you can’t help but shudder at the smirk on his face.

“Cauldron damn me, that male could ruin my life,” you whisper to yourself before pushing off of the wall and making your way toward the exit of the club.

You are almost there when a hand wraps around yours. “Leaving so soon, yn?”

You turn, but miscalculate just how close he is to you and run directly into Azriel’s chest. He swiftly wraps an arm around you to prevent you from falling to the ground.

“I just need some air,” you manage to murmur as you move to leave his grasp. His arm tightens around you.

“I’ll join you then.” When he lets go of you he once again takes your hand in his, interlocking your fingers, and leads you toward the front doors.

You expect him to let go of your hand once the two of you are in the cool night air of Velaris, but instead, he gently pulls you into an ally beside Rita’s.

“So,” he lets go of your hand and turns to face you fully, “are you going to explain to me why you’ve refused to acknowledge my existence? Outside of ogling me from across the room that is.”

You take a step back further into the alley to put some space between the two of you and find a rather interesting discarded wine bottle to look at before answering him, “I don’t know what you’re talking about, Azriel.” He steps toward you, causing you to take another step back.

“That’s bullshit, y/n, and we both know it.” He sighs and runs a hand through his dark hair. “Have I done something to offend you?”

Your eyes snap up to him, “No, you’ve done nothing wrong.”

He nods but grimaces when he takes a step forward and you take another step away, this time your back coming in contact with the brick wall at the end of the alley. “What is it then? You get along with everyone else just fine. Fuck, I’ve even seen you joke with Nesta, but I can’t even get you to hold a conversation with me.”

You close your eyes and take a steadying breath. “I have avoided you because I’m attracted to you.”

“What?”

When you open your eyes you can see he’s watching you with his eyebrows drawn together.

You take another deep breath and decide to continue before you lose your nerve, “At first when I was seeing Finnian it was easier to avoid you because there was no use pining after someone who I was not involved with. When he and I broke up I was devastated, but not because of the end of that relationship. I was devastated because I had to face the reality that I was truly pining after the most gorgeous male I had ever seen, and I didn’t stand a chance.”

He took another step forward, this time caging you in with his body. “You beautiful, infuriating, silly, female.” He breathed, “I’ve been trying to get your attention for months and I couldn’t figure out what I’d done to push you away. It wasn’t until you were watching me tonight that I thought maybe there was hope after all. Can I kiss you?”

Your breath hitched and you nodded.

It was all the confirmation he needed and in a second he lowered his lips to yours. The kiss started slow and sweet, but as the need grew he pulled your lower lip into his mouth and bit it before gently sucking. The sensation caused you to groan.

A cough at the end of the alley caused the two of you to jump apart. “We’re all leaving and heading back to the townhouse. Are you two coming?” Mor stood with a brow raised and one hand on her hip.

You shook your head.

“No, I think I will head home alone tonight.” You paused and looked over to Azriel. “Unless you’d like to come along?”

Hello there, I find your theory about John Brown is a supernatural being in disguise is interesting me, because I don't believe that Undertaker will be the final antagonist but will face to face with Sebastian and Our!Ciel since his main goal is to restore the Phantomhive family and we still don't know who killed Rachel and Vincent, kidnapped the twins and burned their mansion. Also, in Season 1, John Brown was replaced with Ash/Angela who was a fallen angel and the one who cause the Phantomhve family's demise. If John Brown was indeed a supernatural being and was involved with the Phantonhive's death, I imagined him being a dangerous third party like how Ash/Angela became a very dangerous villain that made both demons which is Sebastian and reapers to join forces to stop the fallen angel. I don't know if the whole "snuff out the unclean, snuff out the unnecessary and snuff out the unwanted" will became canon, but let's just wait for another plot twist in thr climax.

Speaking of season 1, in the episode "His butler: Engaging the Servants", Finnian said that birds were his only friends, and since we probably get closer to Finny's past in the manga, could it be birds symbolizes his desire for freedom? Because I always heard this simile, " As free as a bird." What do you think of this?

Also, in the last episode of season 1, Sebastian said that his true form is unsighty, disgusting and repulsive. I personally think that he wasn't wrong that his true form is quite horrible for human eyes to see, i mean, having an eldritch like body with hundred of eyes is far from the word beautiful. Not to mention that Ash/Angela's reaction and how they were terrified implies that Sebastian can easily shred them in pieces which he actually did to that mad fallen angel (and also the cultist that killed R!Ciel in the manga)

(I'm completely aware that I often compared season 1 of the anime with the manga because some of them were nearly the same. Idk about season 2)

John Brown as the biggest bad

I often compare John Brown (and Ash/Angela) to a Mother game character called Giygas, who is an extraterrestrial from a very distant world. In Mother, Giygas crash-lands on Earth and is cared for by George and Mary/Maria. I'm a little confused about the details, but they apparently go with Giygas to its home planet, where Mary/Maria stays. George steals technology from the alien race and returns to Earth, where he conducts more studies. George also somehow manages to pass alien abilities to his descendants. Fearing this technology will be used by Earthlings to destroy that alien race, Giygas is sent back to Earth to stop him. But by the time Giygas gets to Earth again, George has already died, and Giygas has gone kind of insane. Giygas decides to take revenge against humanity, particularly George's descendants, like Ninten. By the time you get to Mother 2 (EarthBound), Giygas is using all sorts of methods to control people, including this kid called Pokey Minch. Ness and his pals defeat Pokey and Giygas, but Pokey escapes, while Giygas is sort of... obliterated? In Mother 3, Pokey returns as King Porky. Though Giygas isn't seen anymore, some essence of evil left behind by Giygas still seems to influence King Porky. With help, Lucas manages to defeat King Porky (without killing him). Then Lucas still has to have a final showdown with his dead and reanimated older mirror twin brother, Claus.

George is one of the parallels to Undertaker, here, assuming he's Cedric, the paternal grandfather of the mirror twin brothers (real Ciel and our earl). Taking and researching technology from another race of creatures, passing abilities/traits onto his descendants. Does the technology come directly from reapers? I don't quite think so, at least not entirely. They keep mentioning their "superiors", and I suspect those are something truly superior to reapers, not simply reapers with higher authority. Angels, perhaps. That's what Ash/Angela is in s1, though apparently a fallen one. And both characters (John and Ash/Angela) have whips....

Perhaps the John Brown we have seen in the manga is one of these superiors? Possibly an angel of sorts.

An angel who has been sent to clean up this mess with Undertaker. I can imagine the superiors trying (at first) to take care of it themselves, not wanting the reapers to know whatever Undertaker has learned. But that's failed, and now active reapers are being pulled in to help.

And, in the process, John has made a contract with Queen Victoria, much like a demon might? The way he uses that puppet of Prince Albert suggests he's controlling the queen, and it might be a lot like the offer Sebastian originally offered to our earl (to make him believe his twin had returned). This makes Victoria the main parallel to King Porky. (I believe there's another one who specifically parallels Pokey Minch, before he returns as the self-proclaimed king.)

Perhaps John, like Ash/Angela, has a completely different side to him that we haven't seen just yet? Something polar opposite of what we've seen, so far. Something intense and crazed, much like Ash/Angela is. Much like Giygas becomes.

I seriously think that our earl (with help) must defeat John Brown as the "big bad", even more so than the queen, though she's probably the one who actually orders the attack, etc.

If the Mother game series parallels are close enough, John's (or the reaper superiors') main concern might be that Undertaker could make their roles obsolete. And that's kind of what Othello and Grelle discuss in ch149. And they haven't even discussed the possibility that this deserting reaper has been passing on reaper traits to human descendants. But they are already worried he might change the nature of life itself, making souls unnecessary. Making reapers unnecessary. It could destroy the entire system of the Afterlife. Much like Giygas' species fears humans stealing and using their own technology against them.

Finny and birds

Isn't there a scene in the manga that has Finny accidentally kill the first bird he tries to care for... or was that also just anime Finny? 🤔 Anyway, he definitely says he likes the outdoors and wide open spaces because of his previous confinement. It would make sense if he's also fond of anything else that symbolizes freedom, like the flight of birds. Makes it more poignant that there's so much caged bird imagery in his current situation at the orphanage... as well as the wren and myths/folklore associated with it.

Sebastian's demonic form

I quickly started to associate Sebastian with two characters in Mother 3: Boney, the loyal family dog who helps Lucas... and the Dark Dragon, the beast that follows your will... if you wake it up and give it your "heart". Lucas is the one to wake the Dark Dragon after his older mirror twin is "sacrificed".

We've actually seen glimpses of a form this demon can take, besides all the mouths and eyes, and besides the various animals (and furniture) it can conjure from itself. We see it reflected in a mirror on the cover art for ch88.

We also see it in a couple panels in ch137. The image on the left is not as well defined, and it might be as the demon is changing forms. The head of the one on the right looks particularly similar to the reflection on ch88's cover.

The Dark Dragon is a powerful creature that can be used for good or bad, depending on who wakes it back up. Lucas has a good heart, so the Dark Dragon does everything in its power to set things right again, after much upheaval. It cannot return the dead to life, just like Sebastian.

So... the Dark Dragon never goes up against Giygas... or even against King Porky. The biggest bads are defeated before Lucas even wakes the Dark Dragon. Giygas is defeated by prayer (of all things) in Mother 2. King Porky is captured inside an Absolute Safe Capsule, invented by Dr. Andonuts.

In Black Butler, we could see a break in that parallel, simply because our earl relies so heavily on Sebastian (and because Sebastian is already awake/under contract). However, we could also end up with our earl and Sebastian witnesses to John Brown and Queen Victoria being defeated by others who have been helping them.

One of Undertaker's other parallels in the Mother game series is Dr. Andonuts... but he's not the only Kuroshitsuji character to parallel the inventor: so is Sieglinde Sullivan. Dr. Andonuts is forced to work for King Porky, and his Fascinating Chimera technology is used/abused by King Porky's Pigmask Army, but he eventually manages to get revenge by keeping Porky alive but unable to cause anymore harm. We know Undertaker doesn't like the queen, so if he finds out she wants his Bizarre Dolls as "allies", he might confront her and John. Then we have Sieglinde, who is brought to England and introduced to the queen. Soon after, we find out the queen is sponsoring Sieglinde's new (mostly secret) projects... in a house and laboratory also provided by the queen. When Sieglinde figures out the queen is using her, much like her mother used her, she might also rise up against Victoria.

If we keep really close to the game, our earl and Sebastian (as Boney instead of the Dark Dragon role) might finally confront Queen Victoria and John Brown (and Double Charles?) just to watch as they are somehow defeated by Undertaker and/or Sieglinde. Extra points if it's Sieglinde using some contraption she invented while working for the queen.

Wouldn't it be wild if Sebastian isn't (directly) the one to defeat his master's main enemies... and then he has to apologize for failing the terms of the contract? Or maybe he covers his demon ass by helping in some roundabout way, so he can still claim the victory for his master? Either way, it could really decrease the sweetness of that revenge.

And I'm completely aware I often compare Black Butler to the Mother game series. 😆 S1 of the anime has some interesting AU parallels. For all of its off-the-rails qualities -- surprisingly -- so does s2. Heck, that joke OVA about making the anime even has a scene that parodies part of Dr. Andonuts' lab under King Porky's control.
