the o'hara's were one of the richest people in america. and with their wealth, they knew that they wanted nothing more than to create a family and make sure their richest stayed in their family. so when they planned to have a child, they didn't expect that they would end up with two. but it was perfect for the family when they saw that they would have a little girl and boy. after that they knew they didn't want anymore.

their life was perfect. at least as perfect as it could be. but cillian realized that it wasn't as perfect as they made it seemed. most of his life, he grew up with two people, his own sister and the housekeeper. their parents were always so busy with their lives. a businessman and an actress and model, when did they ever have time for their kids? yes, they did their best, loving them, being there for them, but they were following their own dreams.

the kids were always spoiled. and most would end up seeing them as rotten to the core at times. cillian never really liked most people getting close, while his own sister loved people, for the fact that she wanted to be the center of them all. and it was like that during high school when they both went to boarding school up north. and that's when they started to become more individuals.

this was when cillian, known as leon now, came to the realization that he was a bit more of the adventurer, curious about things, and maybe a little clueless at times. his sister was the smart girl, and he was well–– the himbo. and he was known as that, to the public, among his peers, and even online when he started to grow his own following. and it was nice to not try to think 24/7.

things were a little different in college. he was accepted to usc, which everyone assumed was because of his parents name, but really he worked for it. he was smart himself, with good grades, and playing sports, it helped with his application. and the four years he had during college, he found himself even more, especially in his sexuality.

now that he is out of college, with a business degree that he uses well with the combination of being an influencer. he was growing more and more, and he had a community, and followers that adored him. his own merch always selling out, and always doing sponsorships with businesses. he just wonders how long he can make this into a career, and if maybe he could do more than just be a content creator.

Kurt's icy stare doesn't leave Finn until he's sure he will actually fully walk away, and not see another in to rush all three of them. It was something he wouldn't put past the jock, knowing how physical he liked reacting to everything before taking the time to think. Thankfully he does walk fully away, and Kurt lets his guard ease down once more. Dropping his hand back to his side, he turns to face Sebastian and Blaine, stepping in closer to gently cup at Sebastian's face, pressing his thumbs against the others jawline to turn his head at will while checking the damage done.

"And are you feeling better about yourself?" He asks, brow arched with a clicking of his tongue as his thumb gently tests the wound site. "Was that productive, at all? Now you're bleeding. Your poor, handsome face is bleeding!"

Lowering his hands, he gives an exasperated sigh, then turns his attention to Blaine, immediately softening further. "I know where the big first aid kit is. Do you think you can manage the poor thing to the bathroom to help clean him up before he goes picking another fight just to get us to fawn over his injuries? I can smell nurse outfit comments coming from a mile away, so don't even."

He would have kept going until he passed out. The flood gates were open and he had a lot of pent up rage still flowing through him. But the Kurt was coming in and immobilizing him. Bringing some clarity back to his senses as he lets his arms fall to his sides. The throbbing finally registering and causes him to wince as he flexes his fingers.

"He fucking started it! Because he can't mind his own fucking business!" He retorts but is backing away. "You need to keep your guard dog on a tighter leash."

Glee Musical Retrospective: You're Having My Baby (Ballad)

Well... this is a thing they did on the show. I think Season 1 is going to win for the biggest number of terrible songs done in the name of comedy. Weirdly, maybe, I have a lot to say about this one.

Story Analysis

The first point I want to make -- or maybe, question I want to ask -- did Kurt pick this song out? or did Finn? I really doubt that Finn has an expansive knowledge of music, especially 70s music, so I'm throwing it out there that when Kurt agreed to help Finn out -- this was what he picked. And can I say -- how devilish of him? This whole episode he's scheming to get Finn for himself through this ballad project. And later, he apologizes for his idea not working. So, I'm in camp - this was Kurt's idea.

And, just, wow -- he had to have known that this song would have repercussions. Maybe he didn't know of Quinn's homelife. Maybe he thought the whole thing was a funny joke. Maybe it was intentionally malicious and he thought Quinn would dump him for it. Maybe he was trying to be sincere with his sentimentality. I mean -- you could go in any direction, really, and be plausible. But it's a fascinating layer to add onto this performance.

So, okay, there's just a lot of threads to go down, and I'm not sure where to start.

I suppose - I should mention that this song was chosen because it was bad. This whole scene is played up comedically -- in that uncomfortable, embarrassing way comedy is done in, say, The Office. The song is blatantly about a man singing to his pregnant significant other that the baby they're having will bring them closer together as a couple, and is deepening his love for her. The thing though... not only is it a really terrible song (I mean, music is subjective, but apparently - it did hit #1 on a terrible song list back in 2006.) the context in which Finn is singing is so terribly inappropriate. I do think the whole scene is hilarious based on the awkwardness of the presentation.

However... this was such a bad choice for Finn to sing. I mean, the thing that sticks out to me -- beyond the somewhat sexist nature of the song (which has been disputed by Paul Anka but there's a deeply uncomfortable line in the full version implying that the woman didn't get an abortion to please the man/narrator) -- Finn had to have known what Quinn's parents were like. She had asked him not to mention anything to her parents multiple times, and he goes and reveals her pregnancy to them without her permission. And I know Quinn is often supposed to be the villain a lot of the times - but I can't support Finn's choice to do this in any context. Not only is he taking her choice in the matter away from her - the end result is that her parents kick her out. So, whenever I watch this song, I can't get past egregious breech of trust.

Not surprisingly - Quinn goes from being super annoyed at the whole thing to finding it romantic. Because Glee has a tendency to try to romanticize gestures that probably shouldn't be romanticized. I do think it's in character for Quinn to be endeared by this. She's always been fond of Finn's lovable idiot ways. And she's a girl who has some severe self worth issues (undoubtedly brought about by her parents) - so the song going on about how beautiful she looks while pregnant, would be weirdly sweet. But I'm pushing back on the show thinking that underneath the awkwardness is a sweet, romantic gesture. Because it's not.

Another interesting layer is watching when the parents realize what's going on. I'm shocked Quinn's mom doesn't pick up on it right away - however, I think they were intentionally waiting for these lines:

I can see it, your face is glowing I can see it in your eyes

The camera pushes in on Judy's face because she knows. She can see it, even if she hasn't said anything. It's not a look of realization but a look of confirmation of something she had already suspected. It's a clever bit of editing in that moment.

Quinn's dad takes a little longer to get there. He doesn't know what to think at first - other than the gesture is frivolous and ridiculous, but then around these lines he catches on:

That you're havin' my baby You're the woman I love And I love what it's doin' to ya

And this is where the scariness of Quinn's dad comes out. Because not only does he have these hypocritical, misogynistic views of women's roles -- he does not want to acknowledge that his daughter is a little girl, but a young woman. The other fairly uncomfortable component is, not only is he pissed at Finn, but he looks to Judy - as if she has something to do with all of it. I just can't with this dude. This song stops being funny here, and starts being a really bad drama.

There is one last comedic beat the show puts in, though, and it's at the end -- with Quinn's dad stopping the song just as Finn sings about his seed growing in her. It's a nice touch - and a good moment to stop this farce.

Technical Thoughts

Okay, so again in this episode, someone brings in a boombox/stereo to play the background music to show that Glee is set in reality. I find it hilarious, again, because where did Finn get an instrumental version of this song? I can't believe there's a karaoke mix of this out there (I mean, I'm sure there is, but still...). It'll be nice when Glee lets this element go, because I find them trying to cover their tracks a little hilarious.

I think Finn sounds alright on the song - it never goes too high, so he doesn't have to strain too much. But I'm already meh on his voice in the first place, the terribleness of this song doesn't help.

I will say - one element I do like in this scene is the acting. Everyone is spot on with the emotions. Cory and Dianna couldn't stop laughing during it (which is understandable) - and I think that brings out a sincere connection between Finn and Quinn. We don't often get to see why these characters would be in a relationship with each other, but I think there's some genuine chemistry between the actors here, and it showcases nicely why Finn and Quinn stick it out -- there is a general fondness between them.

The parents' acting is also superb. Even if I do find it silly that they don't catch on during the first line, they make the scene go from uncomfortable comedy to chilling drama.

vs. The Studio Version: As usual, it's the full version of the song. Interestingly, it's remixed a little - the instrumental portions of the song have been raised up, which helps cover some of the vocal inconsistencies. Still - I'm guessing this one didn't fly up the iTunes charts.

vs. The Original Version: Glee pretty much kept the same arrangement of the song. Interestingly - can you hear out at ease Paul Anka is at singing the song? It's supposed to be flowy and easy -- indicative of that 70s flower child vibe that the song is giving off. Finn, by contrast, is so harsh. Part of it is Cory's singing but also part of it is that Finn would be nervous and kind of blunder his way through the song.

I should also mention that, even with the issues within the lyrics, this is very much a 70s - love, peace, and hippies song. The fact that Finn is singing this to Quinn's rigid, conservative parents is another layer of comedy.

Honestly Brittany is underhated in my opinion lmao. Like I was literally waiting for ages for someone to make a negative thread about I am unicorn on reddit so I could hate on her. Last time someone made a thread about that episode said "Kurt was an asshole to yell at Brittany. He could have kindly explained to her to remove the posters" like he did? But Brittany went to ahead and hung the posters anyway. :/

Oh hey we just watched that ep! And I hated it! I don't know if I'd call it the worse episode, but it made me more uncomfortable than Asian F and Pot o Gold, which we watched right after. Like I've never had that bad a reaction to that ep before but wow

My sister asked me if I agreed with that sentiment (being sure to say "If it wasn't Brittany saying it, how would you feel?" bc that makes a difference lol) and my response was "What did she say? I just tune her out now"

I mean obviously the sentiment isn't wrong. How often do we say that almost any one of the glee clubbers would be a better leader or representative than flop hudson. I just feel like Brittany is feeding into a larger problem that I have with season 3 in regards to Kurt

Which is just how they make so many jokes about Kurt being more flamboyant and girly than he actually is. Rachel saying she wants to see Kurt in a bridesmaid’s dress. Finn saying "What's with the sparkly jacket i thought you were kurt" but then he also has a comment in s2 about "sequined riding pants". but when has kurt ever wore sequins or sparkles outside of mercedes's dreamgirls fantasy number?? and having actual adults talk about how he isn't sexy enough (call the police) and laughing him out of an audition bc he's sooo fucking gay ha ha. i kinda talk about it here if you wanna read more unrelated angry rambling

Anyway all that to say. Kurt is not straight passing! He doesn’t need to be! He’s bold, theatrical, he loves fashion, he loves Broadway, and that’s great! But the pink sparkly unicorn stuff is something Brittany tried to force on him.

Kurt loves Judy Garland. He wanted to pay tribute to her with his campaign posters, hearkening back to her Blackglama fur coat ad. Something that references a beloved icon of the queer community, and fashion history at the same time. Two things that are very Kurt

But with Brittany, all nuance and clever reference is gone. She puts ruby slippers in the goody bag, just because they’re sparkly and flamboyant. They reference Judy in the most cliche and obvious way possible. Even if someone wants to claim it was her own version of a clever reference, she still has more pointless stuff in there as well. Unicorns, a teletubby, hair bands?? What does any of this have to do with Kurt or what he likes or represents?

And obviously there is nothing wrong with being the most flamboyant gay person you want to be. Pink and sparkles and rainbows obviously aren’t bad on their own. Not trying to sound like the shitty old “Gay people I respect vs gay people I don’t respect” meme. It’s just. Every gay person is more than their sexuality. No matter how flamboyant they are, how they dress, how many rainbows they wanna slap on everything. That’s still a whole person. Just bc all YOU see is a giant rainbow flag, that doesn’t mean that’s all they are

Brittany thinks being gay is nothing but pink unicorns and rainbow glitter. How is that any different from the shit Karofsky or Azimio or any other bully says about Kurt?? At the end of the day it’s just someone trying to cram him in a tiny little box that he is far too big, too bold, too nuanced to fit into 

I mean god fucking forbid, but imagine if Brittany was “helping” Mercedes run for president like this. Telling her that being black should be her main personality trait, and filling a goody bag with items that are Brittany’s idea of what being “black” means to HER 💀💀 (I mean anybody with common sense could see it was insane, but her stans would react the same way and make Mercedes the bad guy when she reacted poorly bc what else is new lol)

And all her dumbass unicorn talk literally made Kurt start to dislike that part of himself! Like he’s always been bullied for it but he was still unapologetically himself. But Brittany’s campaign idea contributed to Kurt thinking he needed to change himself, and saying he was tired of being a unicorn. And in s3 he starts wearing more drab colors and all these sweaters and capes and he’s bundling himself up like he’s protecting himself and it makes me sad. And they bring in a completely new character that looks like Kurt just to call Kurt ugly and a girl and make fun of him. It drives me up a fucking wall! Season 3 is so awful to Kurt i literally can’t stand it. And it all starts with Brittany :) Thanks for that. Girl power!

And after dealing with the pain and humiliation of literally being laughed out of an audition BY MEMBERS OF THE FACULTY for being “too gay” Kurt is faced with the bright pink unicorn posters with his face on him that say “This is your box! This is all you will ever be!” and wow i can’t imagine why he’d be upset with Brittany for that!! Who’da thunk??? Brittany was a selfish idiot for hanging them up. Kurt had every right to be upset. And Santana was an idiot for invalidating Kurt’s feelings and just boosting Brittany up when she was obviously in the wrong. But that’s Br*ttana for you :)

I’m not even happy about Kurt “accepting” the posters and hanging them up himself and making that his campaign theme. That’s the version of Kurt that someone else made up in their head. That’s not him. He is so much more than Brittany’s tiny little brain could ever even comprehend lol. So yeah. I hate her :)
