                  SINGING  HAD  QUICKLY  become  a  hobby  that  Gabriella  was  rather  fond  of  ,  as  unexpected  as  the notion  was  .  It  didn’t  carry  the  academic  merits  that  her  scholastic  affairs  did  ,  but  the  change  was  something  she  hadn’t  known  she  needed  ,  and  the  amazing  new  people  she’d  met  in  her  ventures  absolutely  made  the  whole  thing  worth  it  .  Nonetheless  ,  she  still  enjoyed  her  quiet  time  where  she  could  perform  without  an  audience  ,  away  from  judgement  so  she  could  just  focus  on  herself  and  her  voice  .  Her  eyes  are  closed  as  she  sings  into  the  empty  auditorium  ,  though  her  voice  cuts  off  abruptly  when  she  hears  a  noise  from  the  far  corner  .  Gabriella’s  eyes  snap  open  ,  scanning  the  empty  seats  for  a  sign  that  someone  was  there  .  ❝  Hello  ?  ❞  Her  voice  rings  through  the  space  ,  taking  a  step  back  out  of  the  spotlight  .  ❝  Is  someone  there  ?  ❞

     HER FEATURES TIGHTEN , an unsettling and overwhelming burst of pain in her chest springing upon her at his words . They say high school romances never lasted , but she’d been naive enough to think that , just maybe , they’d had a real shot . Gabriella draws a slow , steadying breath before she meets his gaze and the smile on her features is forced , at best . Her lips are suddenly dry and she licks them to wet them before the words can be spoken : ❝ I loved you , too . ❞ And those four words held such truth that Gabriella was sure , above anything else she knew , that it was the only one undeniable fact in the whole world . She was as sure of it as she was sure the first three numbers of pi were 3.14 ; she was as sure of it as she was sure the earth revolved around the sun . For a time , her world had revolved around him . Oh , how she missed those days .

      SHE DARES TO step forward  ,  breath caught in her throat as she reaches for his hand and gives it a slow , gentle squeeze . ❝ It felt like the right time when it happened , ❞ everything had felt right , no matter how much drama there seemed to be at the time ; no matter how many obstacles they’d faced , ❝ but it wasn’t . ❞ Because if it was , they wouldn’t be having this conversation right now . If it was , she’d be standing this close to him and there would be nothing stopping her from pulling him down and kissing him right then and there . . . But she couldn’t . ❝ I loved you , Troy .       SOME  PEOPLE  NEEDED  the  drama  and  competition  in  their  lives  ;  Gabriella  ,  however  ,  didn’t  .  While  she  enjoyed  the  friendly  competition  that  a  scholastic  decathlon  provided  ,  it  was  about  pushing  herself  academically  more  than  it  had  ever  been  about  winning  .  Apparently  ,  that  same  mindset  didn’t  apply  when  it  came  to  the  musical  arts  .  Nonetheless  ,  Gabriella  had  wanted  to  expand  her  horizons  and  try  something  perhaps  a  little  more  out  of  her  comfort  zone  with  the  new  start  that  switching  schools  had  provided  her  with  .  She  had  never  had  any  intention  of  taking  the  art  of  competition  away  from  Sharpay  ,  but  at  the  same  time  ,  there  was  enough  room  in  that  theatre  for  all  of  them  .  

      ❝  I  never  meant  to  take  any  of  this  away  from  you  ,  Sharpay  ,  ❞  her  tone  is  earnest  ,  eyebrows  raising  apologetically  before  she  tries  to  offer  a  friendly  sort  of  smile  .  Making  friends  really  was  a  lot  easier  when  you  had  something  in  common  ,  but  Gabriella  was  more  than  willing  to  give  this  a  shot  .  ❝  Why  don’t  we  run  lines  together  later  tonight  ?  I’d  really  appreciate  getting  some  tips  from  you  .  ❞
