REVIEW: FINDING PENNY PODCAST
If you love fiction podcasts, then I've got the perfect thing for you.
'Finding Penny' is a horror/ sci-fi podcast about the disappearance of a highschool girl named Penny and how her girlfriend, Meribelle and best friend, Betty, try to find her.
The story is set in 1990, in a small town in Texas called Willowdale. Penny decides to propose to Meribelle in a forest, but things go terribly wrong. Betty and Penny hear people chanting, immediately after which Penny's scream is heard and she goes missing.
The story starts with the police investigating this case. At this point I pretty much prepared myself for a murder mystery. I assumed it was the work of a serial killer or a weird cult and that Penny was probably dead; but as the story progressed, I had a gut instinct that maybe there was something more going on after all.
This podcast is perfect for people who, like me, love listening to the story unfold and then going back to the beginning to discover that there were clues present all along. I loved the fact that every time I made a prediction about which direction the story would take, the podcast slapped me with a plot twist and made the story 100 times better.
Every character in this story has a unique personality. Meribelle's determination to find her girlfriend and Betty's practical mindset work perfectly with each other, making them precious characters that the audience would root for.
The story is true to it's timeline. Given that this incident took place in 1990, the writers didn't forget to include homophobia, and as sad as it is, I liked that aspect because that made the story seem more real.
I can not praise this podcast enough without giving spoilers. All I'd like to say is that I rarely get this excited about a story. Finding Penny isn't the usual 30-45min podcast I listen to, so I was a little skeptical at first, but needless to say I was pleasantly surprised. It was original. The flow was perfect. The writing was incredible. @findingpennypod did a really great job!!
My ratings (on a scale of 5)
Voice acting: 4
Audio quality: 5
Storyline: 5
Overall: 5

Finding Penny
a band new podcast i was lucky to listen to in early access!
Mabel, a soon to be high school graduate, is looking for her missing girlfriend, Penny, with the help of her best friend. Clues? A mysterious ritual in the woods.
Bite sized, every episode lasts a handful of minutes; i was scared the characters wouldn't be as developed as they deserve due to that time limit, but hey I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't the case. A story about grief and family.
CW; bird/human murder mentions, homophobic and racist behavior/language

“Finding Penny” Episode One Is Out!
I’ve been looking forward to this show ever since the creators reached out to me and asked if I’d like to write a review. It’s a Southern Gothic mystery tale set in the 1990s, with a queer narrative. Episode One is a very quick listen, under five minutes, and so it’s great for bite-sized queer fiction content if that’s what you like. I’ve been sent the other episodes in advance, but I’ll be reviewing them as they release. My full review of Episode One is under the cut.
Episode One is a recording of a police interview. Detective Johnson questions Betty Collins about the night her friend disappeared - the titular Penny. It’s revealed that Penny and Betty were setting up a proposal for Penny’s girlfriend, Maribelle, when a group of people in purple robes whisked Penny away. What happened to her is unknown, but I get the sense that Betty knows something she isn’t saying. From the first episode, Betty seems like a fun character. She’s feisty and brash, even going so far as to yell at the detective for his homophobic tendencies. As a queer person who grew up in a small conservative town, this surprised me, but I think it’s meant to convey how little Betty cares for other people’s opinions of her.
As for Maribelle and Penny, they’ve been together for four years. I expected these characters to be high schoolers, so I’m glad to instead have a queer story focused around young adults. It makes them easier to relate to. Penny clearly loves Maribelle a lot.
The episode is a little short, and the audio quality is somewhat inconsistent, but this is an indie podcast. With listener support and a growing fanbase, there’s a lot of potential for this show and cast. Please give it a listen and follow them here on Tumblr, @findingpennypod! I’ll be back next week with my thoughts on Episode Two.

Wake up, guys! New queer southern gothic podcast just dropped!
So, time for a confession: I fucking love fiction podcasts, ESPECIALLY with queer representation. I mean, it’s not much of a confession, but. Uh. Maybe it wasn’t obvious. But it did lead to something very exciting for me~
I got asked by the creatores to review a new podcast called Finding Penny that’s coming out! In fact, the first episode is out today! Right now! (btw, there are trigger warnings for racism, homophobia, sexism, religious trauma, and mentions of animal and human sacrifice.)
Finding Penny is a queer southern gothic story about a girl called Penny who goes missing, and her girlfriend Maribelle’s attempts to find her.
Episode 1 drops us right into the intrigue: Penny has been missing for a week, and no one can find her. A dectective interviews Betty, Penny and Maribelle's friend, to find out her version of events of the night Penny disappeared. This goes pretty much as you might expect.
From then on, Maribelle works together with Betty and a girl she meets in the woods named Eleanor, to try to find out what's happened to her beloved Penny. She'll do anything she can to find answers, even in the face of opposition.
The story is told in twelve short episodes, and I’m not going to go into too much detail to avoid spoilers, but I will say this:
I abso-fucking-lutely adore the characters. I got sucked in really quickly, and was dying to find out what happens at the end of each episode. Especially the last one. Got my fingers crossed for a second series! There’s definitely a lot of potential for more, and the last episode raises a whole bunch of questions.
From a more detached not-emotionally-invested-in-the-story standpoint, I will say that sometimes the dialogue seems a little clunky in the effort to make sure the listener understands what’s going on. The background noises do help to set the scene though, letting you know where characters are and what they’re doing, so it is easier to become immersed even in short episodes. It doesn't have the same quality of bigger podcasts, but don’t let that put you off! It's still good, and an enjoyable listen.
Please, give Finding Penny a listen at the link here. You can also check out their tumblr @findingpennypod, and there’s a Patreon here. I'm poor, so I can't help financially myself, but if you're willing and able, I'm sure the creators will appreciate it!

tis a review for a new indie podcast- keep reading if ur into queer horror. and please excuse the horrid formatting i am bound to the mobile version of this website
@findingpennypod is a new horror podcast that went live today on podbean with its first episode. since a lot of the content i post centers around podcasts, the creators have asked me whether id be interested in early access in exchange for writing a review to help spread the word- i said yes, of course, since i strongly believe in mutual support within the art and queer community
plot summary as given by the creators: the year is 1990. willowdale, a small town in texas, is faced with its biggest mystery of all time: the disappearance of one of their highschool seniors penny. can her girlfriend maribelle save her before it's too late?
there are going to be 12 episodes, all of which are quite short- ranging between something between 3 and 5 minutes- so it's quite a short listen but i haven't found it to impact the story telling so far. as im writing this i've listened to the first couple episodes. since im predisposed to like this type of content i’m (of course) a fan of the premise but i do think the creators have put a fun spin on some of the tropes you’re used to seeing in this genre and they seem to be handling their themes quite sensibly so far! additionally, the cast is very female centric and that's something many of the popular horror podcasts lack so i appreciate it even more here
regarding the production: it's not quite as refined as the established podcasts that have turned into big productions over the years but it still makes for good audio and a fun listening experience and frankly, expecting anything more from a first season of any indie production is nonsensical imo. plus i think the voice actors are all quite charming ^^
since i don't want to spoil things for anyone i’ll probably b back with a final review once the final episode airs to talk about my thoughts on the content in more detail but until then happy listening!!

FINDING PENNY PODCAST
The year is 1990. Willowdale, a small town in Texas, is faced with its biggest mystery of all time. The disappearance of one of their Highschool seniors Penny. Can her girlfriend Maribelle save her before it’s too late?
Rating: ✮✮✮✰✰ 3/5
it was short, fast paced and anti climactic (in a good way) podcast. the plot was really good and had a lot of potential but i felt like it was rushed. i loved the characters in this podcast bc the conversations between them and the way they handled the situations is what i think i or any one would do, it felt real and not staged. they’re v modern and diverse that anyone can relate to.
one of the things i liked about this podcast was THE ending. idk but whenever i’m watching whether in a tv shows or movies i always freaking love when the ending is ‘open for interpretation’ that makes you think for days.
highly recommended for anyone who wants to start listening to horror/thriller/sci-fi podcast
my thanks to @findingpennypod for a review copy of this v eerie and chilling a24-ish podcast :)
tw/ racism, homophobia, sexism, discussion of religious trauma, and mentions of animal and human sacrifice.

Finding Penny Pod Review!
Hello! I share a lot of horror stuff here and a few months ago, the creators of @findingpennypod asked me to do an honest review :D
Finding Penny is basically about two high school girls in love, Maribelle and Penny, but Penny goes missing and now it's up to Penny to find her.
I LOVE, absolutely ADORE stories set in small towns. Idk I just like the appeal lol but I'm not gonna lie I was kinda bored for the first few episodes but it gets super interesting as it goes on. I like the story with its twists and I NEED season two, yall cannot leave me hanging like that :(
The voice actors did a good job portraying the characters. I especially liked Maribelle's voice actor !! I liked the way they convey emotion and bring life into the lines. The voice actors gave me a clear vision of what I think the characters look like which I find hard to do in most podcasts unless there is a canon description of the characters. The guardian's voice reminded me of the tone of "number 15 burger king foot lettuce" lmaooo
Though one thing I didn't like is how all the characters, except Betty, seem one dimensional? I guess there wasn't enough time in the episodes to establish their personality but it's like most of the characters only have one trait. Like how Maribelle seems obsessed with Penny (understandably so) but it's like she has nothing else going on in her life except for Penny.
Another thing was the sound design. I can picture the scenes well but the background noises were lacking for me and didn't put me in the scene.
Overall, I would rate it 8.5/10 :D I will definitely listen to this podcast more 'cause of the great plot and pacing. Would recommend it to others as well !!

New Podcast: Finding Penny
I was asked by the creators, @findingpennypod, to review this show, so, here it is! Thank you for reaching out, this was a fun listen. Check out their website, or find them on Podbean or Spotify.
Do you like spooky mysteries threaded with high school romance? Cathartic confrontation with homophobic parents, and an adorable pagan family to help you recover? How about a story about a girl in love facing down terrible occult powers to save her fiancé? Consider Finding Penny your one-stop shop for every one of the above.
Finding Penny is a tightly written mystery about a high-schooler in a remote Southern town who vanishes the very night she’s supposed to marry her childhood friend, Maribelle. Now, Maribelle must uncover the mystery before her high school graduation, or risk being trapped alone with her grief in her hometown. Teaming up with her best friend Betty, she faces down the supernatural forces that took Penny, and finds out just how far she’s willing to go for true love.
I say tightly written for two reasons: one, it’s a very short-format show, each episode only a few minutes long. It feels perfect for if you’re looking for a tasty sound bite to go with a short break in your day, or something to do with your eyes off a screen before bed. Second, both the dialogue and the overall plot itself are neatly paced. I was itching for more at the end of each episode. I was impressed by how much characterization they were able to fit into such a small segment alongside pretty heavy plot, especially because it’s generally shown and not told.
This is a very indie production, and I’m excited to see how the creators continue to experiment with it! I won’t spoil anything, but there’s a clever bit of sound design towards the end of this season that made me want to rewind and listen to it again. Definitely worth a listen, looking forward to season two!
