Dimitri's Supports
I have waited FOREVER for this. Let's go. And I decided to put my patience to the test, saving Dedue for last.
Since it's Dimitri and I love him, and like Dedue who I also love, he's the only one unlocking all his A-Supports, I'm going to blog all my reactions to them like I did with Dedue. Part of me wishes I thought of this for the other characters, but honestly it would've taken forever lol. Plus Dimitri and Dedue get special treatment because I said so.
Raphael
Starting off with something light hearted, I hope. I do wonder if I'm going to regret not saving this one for the inevitably heavy-handed stuff coming later.
I'm seriously betting this is a support you're supposed to get in part 1 lol. Dimitri sounds young (or maybe I'm just haven't heard non-growl part 2 Dimitri enough yet?)
Dimitri's training made Raphael think he was dying lol. Dimitri's strength is really meme tier.
I need fanart of Dimitri and Chrom co-miserating their mishandled strength breaking something. And Lucina.
Lamo, Raphael has never felt a cramp before. Lucky bastard.
Raphael is a sweetie, going to apologize to his muscles. I really wish they gave him something else to talk about other than muscles and food. Not everyone needs Dimitri tier development, but I think I'd like Raphael a lot more if he just got a smidge more depth.
Got to say, it's a bit jarring to go from "moments away from a suicide charge in the rain" to "lol, Raphael, it's muscle pain." As glad as I am that I got this support, I do think some should've been locked to part 1.
And this isn't just for Dimitri's development. I also saw Marianne and Raphael's B before this support and she reverted back to her part 1 self too.
Catherine
Maybe it's just me, but he does sound a bit older.
OMG - Dimitri's back. 😭😭😭
Sorry, it didn't really hit in that first one since that seemed like a part 1 support.
Oh, cool! I was wondering if anyone would bring up Catherine returning to Faerghus. My bets is she's too loyal to Rhea. (I guessed right)
Catherine be simpin. That's ok, I get it.
So it's not because Catherine dislikes Dimitri, or that she's absolutely needed to rule House Charon, so I think Dimitri just likes her. She's cool though. I get it.
Lamo, she told him he'd better get his sleep like he's a kid.
Curious how the A+ support will play out.
Mercedes
Team Mom's support!
Oh, no, this one's taking a serious turn isn't it? But their initial supports were so light and cute.
Mercedes just told Dimitri that he's kind to a fault. Somehow I know he's going to deny that.
Annnnnd I'm right 😭😭😭He's still calling himself a killer and disgusting monster 😭😭😭
OK - so THIS seems perfectly in tone with his recent character development. But it's so sad hearing him still talk about himself that way.
Mercedes is such a therapist. I can't. She's too pure. But savage. I saw that Lorenz support.
"I am scared . . . so scared that I will forget their faces." 😭😭😭😭😭😭 Dimitri why????
Mercedes telling Dimitri to live in the present. Her supports are always so good. I legit think she's easily a top 10 favorite in this game.
Wow, Dimitri saying if someone told him that 5 years ago, he'd be different. DID NO ONE EVER GIVE HIM ANY HELP AT ALL???
I love how she's talking to him as a classmate, and equal, and not talking up to him. He's always wanted that.
Dimitri's never given his own dreams any thought 😭😭😭He really was just 100% living for other people most of the time. 😭😭😭
Awww MERCEDES, I can't. She says she just wants to keep being his friend. This is so damn sweet. And heavy. But still sweet.
It just hits super hard knowing how badly Dimitri just wanted friends in part 1. And looking back, Mercedes and Sylvain were really the only two who were pretty casual with him.
Aww, yeah, Mercedes not putting up with the bullshit, Dimitri. Telling him to quit the self-deprecation! God, I love her.
Oh, God, they both said the old FE code for "we're married" i.e. I want to "stay by your side."
Ok, @garlandgerard, I totally get why you ship this. Mercedes loves to nurture people, and Dimitri's emotionally needy, so they match pretty well. She also didn't put up with the constant self-put-downs, but stayed gentle about it. And they talked like equals too, like friends, which is what Dimitri always wanted. It's all very sweet.
Annette
Yeah, see, this one starts off with "your highness," but Mercedes it was just Dimitri. No hate for Annette. She's my girl.
These two always give me sibling vibes.
Haha, Annette "I thought I already knew you, but I'm not sure I really do." Hmmmm wonder what Dimitri did that made her think that maybe there's parts of him she didn't know. No. idea.
Hey, Annette, no one blames you for not knowing what to say to Dimitri when they reunited lol.
Annette too pure too, wanting to cheer Dimitri up with his favorite food.
Her not knowing what he likes to eat is 100% that moment when you realize you don't know someone's favorite color.
HOW can Dimitri have no strong feelings about food. I'm having pizza right now. Let me tell you, I have strong feelings about some food.
I love how easily Dimitri deflected from talking about himself lol.
Awwww, Annette wants to live with her family again. I'll make that happen, Annette. Don't worry.
Haha, they're conspiring together behind Gilbert's back.
They still have an A+ support, which is weird, because that seemed pretty well ended? Like I see why Catherine's needed more, but not this one. Still, not going to say no. I like their dynamic.
Ingrid
OCF they're training. God I love all the Faerghus childhood group though.
Oh, fuck, here comes Glenn again. My heart's not ready for this with Rodrigue dead. Poor Felix.
Ingrid being Dimitri's knight 😊😊😊 as it should be.
Haha, Dimitri asks her for an interpretation. Just make her your knight.
Glad he hasn't started saying "I'm not worthy!" Because right now it's about Ingrid's feelings.
Wow, there, Ingrid. "However you please, Your Highness." That . . . that sounds like an invitation. To "staying by your side."
Dimitri laughed. 😊😊😊
Oh, God, this is so cute. His pause asking her to support and defend him as his knight. 😊😊😊 OMG. I'm not sure that's all she had in mind though, good Sir, have you LOOKED in the mirror?
Seriously though, Ingrid's just surrounded by studs, isn't she?
Oh, God, I'm right. She didn't just mean knight. But Dimitri's too dense in that area to notice. She crushing hard. Girl, I get you.
She blushing, saying "for the Kingdom," naw, she just like him. Me too, Ingrid. Me too.
Dimitri always makes people promise not to die on him. It's so sad considering . . .
Flayn
With Flayn it's always a toss up. Sometimes things are super light hearted, and other times it's way heavy.
On a random note, does no one wonder why Flayn hasn't aged a day in 5 years?
Flayn having nightmares. Not allowed. I bet it's fucking Jeritza's fault. I'm glad you get to rip him a new one so many times in this game.
Why is Flayn apologizing?? She's never done a thing wrong in her life.
Right, Flayn's other support with Dimitri was pretty heavy. And it started so funny with him stomaching her food.
Oh, good grief, what's he apologizing for? Ok - so Dimitri did do some things wrong. But not to Flayn.
He lied. Let me guess. Her food actually sucks.
Aw, got it. He went right to the meal. Is he really going to come out and say, well it actually sucked 😂
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK
WHAT ABOUT ALL THOSE MEALS???? AND THE TEA an embarrassing amount of tea.
Wait. He can't taste ANYTHING??? Like. How? Did he hide that????
Ok - I need to look at his team and dining dialogue.
OMG. He really never says a word about how anything tastes? He always just talks about smells????
OMG. How did I NOT NOTICE. I've taken Dimitri to dinner a million times. And tea timed him too many times to admit too.
AND I NEVER NOTICED HE NEVER ONCE SAID HOW ANYTHING TASTED. HOW.
OMG that support with Annette hits different now 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
OMG and Dedue's support with Flayn hits different now. Since he wanted to badly to find food Dimitri loves 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Does Dedue know? Is that why he's so dedicated to cooking??
Can I headcannon that?
OMG, I feel so awful about that jab about pizza. Dimitri CAN'T TASTE pizza or anything 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Please someone tell me there isn't any more "this awful thing also happened to Dimitri and he's failed to tell you" like learning he almost fucking died at Duscur. And now this. Dimitri needs to learn how to fucking complain.
The writers are so fucking mean to Dimitri. OMG. OMG, how am I supposed to take him to dinner and tea now, knowing this?
Why does everything hit so differently now? And so many Blue Lions supports are about food - but Dimitri can't relate
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
This game needs to stop bullying Dimitri.
But like, God, can you imagine? Not tasting anything? I'd starve. I'd actually starve. I never really get hungry. I really would starve.
On the flip side, he's good for Flayn then, since someone can eat her cooking I guess.
"I was just saying what I thought you would want to hear . . ." Dimitri - a summary.
Naw, that's a kind lie. That kind of lie doesn't really hurt anyone.
Oh - dear God. Flayn. Stop. No sampling pungent food.
Oh, she blushing. Dimitri got her blushing
Please tell me in their paired ending Dimitri gets his taste back.
Oh, there's an A+, does he taste something. Please tell me he tastes something.
This support though. It wasn't really one on my radar but
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Gilbert
Oh, man, this one right after Flayn's. God, I'm going to need the Alois one after this. Gilbert and Dimitri are two of the most somber characters in the franchise.
And I haven't forgotten that heartbreaking B support.
Haha Lambert sucked at lying too. Dimitri too pure. Weirdly, despite everything, it's still pretty true.
Oh, shit, oh shit, we're back to Dimitri's demand that Gilbert kill him. I'm betting you usually get that in part 2.
God, imagine seeing Dimitri recover only to see him beg for death again 😭😭😭😭😭😭
I need alcohol.
I need the Alois support.
OMG, shit, Dimitri. No. Don't. Stop.
Like, I know Gilbert won't really kill him, but damn. This support is heavy.
No, Dimitri, no Gilbert is not cruel for not killing you. God.
Oh, not sure about this. I get what Gilbert's going at here, but telling Dimitri that he's not allowed to die because he's got a duty is . . . I think Rodrigue's and Mercedes' live for what you want/the present is a LOT healthier.
At the same time, this is a pretty effective way to make sure Dimitri won't go and try this again, because he really takes duty seriously.
Dimitri doesn't wish to die? 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Oh, thank God.
"Many times I have felt that I cannot afford to die . . . But this was the first time I truly feared the prospect." 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
"Is it really right for me to live?" Oh, dear God. I'm so soft for Dimitri. I can't.
Gilbert answered that one right. 100%.
Damn, these supports.
Alois
OK. I need this one. I really need this one.
I really hope Alois' inspiration is bad puns. I need bad puns right now.
Pretty sure this is a part 1 support though. I love how Alois, not Dimitri, is leading this. And that the person the Kingdom NEEDS is running around and getting attacked by monsters lol
Ok, bad puns. Bring them.
There we go. Thank you, thank you, Alois.
OMG no one's laughing 😂😂😂
Dimitri's laughing 😭😭😭😭😭😭
That's it. This is always getting saved for part 2. I need to hear part 2 Dimitri laugh.
I'm also so glad someone finds Alois funny. Dimitri and Petra need to start a club.
OMG I love the two other confused soldiers. I needed this 😂😂😂
Marianne
These two were so sweet in their C and B supports.
I swear I'm going to end up shipping Dimitri with everyone. Except maybe Annette, no hate, they just seem so much like brother and sister to me.
And Felix x Annette 100%
Survivor's Guilt - the pairing. Both wondering why they survived 😭😭😭
"There are so many others who are much more deserving of life . . ." - who said it? Marianne or Dimitri?
These two just understand how each other feels so well. It hits so different compared to Marianne's other romantic possible supports where they just try to make her smile.
Instead these two take comfort in finding someone who understands how they feel so well and feel relieved they can share that with someone.
Haha - "I must go on living. I cannot give in to death so readily." This coming right after his support with Gilbert. Good job, Gilbert.
They've both had it so rough 😭😭😭😭😭😭
"There is no need to force yourself to smile as your soul bleeds." Dimitri always gives such good advice that he never follows.
Aww, now at least it's getting cute instead of just heavy. Marianne laughed too 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Yesss, Girl, preach. I got a little sick of her other supports all being "cheer up!" Like I know it's all in good faith, but I'm so glad this chain exists. It just hits different.
Dimitri doesn't think he's strong enough to live his life. 😭😭😭 this game. I swear.
ohhhh - ohhh, Dimitri blushing now. And all she needed to say was they've been brought closer together. Congrats Marianne!
OHHHH tables have been turned. Now someone's making Dimitri promise he needs to live!
"I don't know what I'd do with myself if we lost you . . ."
"I promise to the goddess of Fodlan that I will never give you cause for despair."
OMG these two are being so sweet, I can't. 😭😭😭😊😊😊
Felix
Oh, boy, here we go. This should be . . . interesting.
Oh, we're starting off good I see. Felix telling Dimitri he needs to answer quickly or get cut in half 😔Felix. No.
Dimitri sounds so somber 😭
Dimitri admitting both are him - the vengeful "boar" and the friendly good person. And this is why I love him.
Dimitri feels the need to shoulder all the regret the dead feel, please don't. They wouldn't want that 😭😭😭😭😭
"The dead won't acknowledge your loyalty, they don't care." - Felix not wrong there.
I partly agree with the idea Dimitri is "serving his own ego" by claiming he's acting for the dead. I think it's a bit more complicated than that, but I think that's part of it.
Felix saying some good stuff here about the dead being dead and the living being living.
"If you keep stringing gravestones around your neck, you'll snap." - Felix, I don't know if you noticed but . . . uh . . . he sort of did.
Felix telling Dimitri to become a grave keeper is a bit funny. Not going to lie.
"I'm not immune to emotion you know." - just tsunderes things
Aw, Felix is upset his father died 😭😭 after all that shit-talking about Rodrigue 😭😭
Wish Felix didn't cut Dimitri off when he said "more than anyone you-" (care about other people, unless he joins CF and just kills everyone)
Oh, God, Felix is such a tsundere. "I couldn't stand the pathetic look on your face. That's all." Sure, Felix.
Kinda wish these two had an A+ though. Seems like there's more to do than the A+ with Annette and Flayn.
Really curious to see what their paired ending is like after that. Seems they're still learning to learn about each other. Well, Felix is. Dimitri didn't seem too upset lol.
Dedue
Ok guys. Here we go. I can't believe I managed to wait for this for last. Everyone hyped this one, so let's hope.
Really? We open with Dimitri having scars on his back? 😭
From 9 years ago? So scars from Duscur then?
Images of shirtless Dimitri now. though Not bad images.
He got scars protecting Dedue?
"It makes me think that is was worthwhile that someone like me survived." 😭😭😭 he's talking about protecting Dedue? 😭😭😭
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
"But I saved someone - saved you. That and that alone has been my crutch." 😭😭😭😭😭
I always knew these two were co-dependent.
Dimitri really out here saying that saving Dedue helped him "justify" surviving. 😭😭😭😊😊😊
OMG THAT'S THEIR STORY
OMG, poor Dedue. And Dimitri 😭😭😭did he literally "take a bullet" to save Dedue 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 and still has scars? No wonder Dedue's so loyal. Some kid he didn't know did that. That's one hell of an introduction.
And picturing little Dedue just resigned and angry and waiting to die and just 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Oh, Dedue, you've repaid that debt ten-fold I'm sure.
Ahaha, Dimitri's doing the "you'd better accept your worth!" discussion this time lol.
Dear God these two. Now Dimitri's bringing up that Dedue busted him out of the jail.
I swear, these two have more of a plot off screen than some routes do on screen.
And now picturing Dimitri resigned and just ready to die. And then Dedue busts in. 😭😭😭
"That was nothing more than my duty as your vassal." Stop that Dedue. Dimitri doesn't want you to be his vassal. He wants more.
Holy shit.
"You are irreplaceable. Cherished." 😭😭😭😊😊😊😭😭😭😊😊😊😭😭😭😊😊😊😭😭😭😊😊😊
Not to be that person - but I tell all my "friends" that.
Yes, Dedue, stop saying insisting you're just a "vassal" - that's a worse joke than Alois' puns from earlier.
"Please . . . do not look at me that way." What way, like you're about to make Dimitri cry, or like . . .
"You promised me you would build a Kingdom that is proud to boast of Duscur blood." - shit, man, these two. I just . . .
OMG so much emotion from Dedue. The only time I ever heard that before was in VW when he learned Dimitri died. But let's not remember that right now 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Oh shit. He called him "Dimitri." 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
And it made him blush.
OMG.
Guys, these two.
Aww, Dimitri looks so surprised. 😊😊😊😊😊😊
Oh, these two are so soft for each other. I can't. I just can't.
"To be your friend . . . is what I have always wanted." You're going to get it.
Man, I feel almost guilty S-Supporting Dimitri. He needs to pair up with Dedue pronto.
Dimitri sounds chocked up. OMG.
"So please call upon me when you walk alone at night." Ok. Dedue. Ok. Yes. Guys. This is all very straight.
I'm not saying it's - you know - cannon, but there's some big feels here.
Oh, Dimitri, stop it. You like Dedue's overprotectiveness. Don't lie.
Man, you guys were so right. Dimitri really just came out and said Dedue was "cherished" and "irreplaceable." Like, I'm not making this stuff up. And Dedue blushing hardcore just saying Dimitri's name.
They're both just so soft. I can't. I literally cannot. This support was gold. It was worth all they hype.
And learning more about how they meant. Dimitri really taking a bullet for Dedue there. I just . . .
I just want all the happiness for both of them. They're really something special towards each other. Like I legitimately think this is one of the most two-way loyal relationships in the whole franchise, and definitely the tightest bond in this game.
Like in past games you had Seth for Ephraim and Erikia and Soren for Ike and it's not like Ike, Ephraim and Erikia and etc don't care, but it wasn't the same level, you know? But this is such a two way street.
And I'm so weak for bodyguard with a crush. Like Seth/Eirika? Yes. Geoffrey/Elincia? 100%. Riza/Roy (Fullmetal Alchemist) there again. I'm sure there's more, but those are my top ones. Even Merlin/Arthur sort of counts even if Arthur doesn't know Merlin's his bodyguard lol.
I need to read fanfic for these two. I really don't want to spoil anything, but I'm dying. They're both just so sweet, and I just really love their dynamic. I really want to do a write up on it once I get to the end of the game.

Golden Kamuy chapters 251 and 252 - rumble in the brewhouse
These chapters show the beginning of the mess that is happening inside of and outside of the Sapporo brewery. Or as I’d like to colloquially call it Abashiri 2.0. Chapter 251 is a color cover page featuring Tsukishima and Koito. Let’s just take a second to look at this page. I personally love this cover page and as the manga has continued many of you know that I’ve warmed up to Koito since Karafuto.

Both men a surrounded by items related to them. For Tsukishima there is the bag that Edogai made, his bathhouse supplies, one of Koito’s trunks, various firearms, a grenade like the one he threw at Abashiri, a bayonet and lots of shells and military packs and bags. On Koito’s side there are his menko, umbrella from the circus, his childhood motorbike, saber, an anpan and his photos.
What I find interesting is that some of Koito’s items are from his past and are related to Tsukishima as one of his kidnappers while other items are present Koito. In contrast, all of Tsukishima’s items are from the current timeline and events in the manga, but not from his past, e.g. not hair from his fiancee.
One of the question posed on the cover is asking if ‘love’ is found on the battlefield which really gets back to Tsurumi’s epiphany about the power of love and how he uses that to create his super loyal men on the battlefield. Looking at both of them I read it as Koito looking forward to perhaps finding his own ‘love’ and purpose as he stands in a stiff and serious pose. Meanwhile, Tsukishima looks down, his eyes shaded and his hands in his coat pocket. It seems that Tsukishima may be reflecting on all of his past deeds on and off of the battlefield. This makes sense to me since Tsukishima has much more experience than Koito.
We also know that since both me disobeyed Tsurumi’s orders in regard to Tanigaki and Inkarmat, they have tied each other together in their independence from being total Tsurumi loyalists. Well enough about the cover, let’s get into the action.
The chapter starts with Sugimoto leading Asirpa and Shiraishi towards Ushiyama, Kadokura and Kirawus. Sugimoto boldly claims that they need to hurry since Kadokura and Kirawus are unreliable and useless. Burn.
Noda quickly updates us on everyone’s locations while Usami meets his match in Ushiyama.

It is clear that Hijikata’s group is now at a disadvantage as the other groups are running opposite of Jack. Sugimoto comments on Usami trying to fire a rifle at Ushiyama, and the others rush even more quickly to the location.
Usami, quickly realizes that Ushiyama is no man to be trifled with and he drops the rifle in favor of judo. The situation only becomes worse as Ushiyama has a moment of thought in the heat of conflict to ask Kadokura to confirm Usami’s identity. Good job Ushiyama!

Kadokura of course confirms he’s working for Tsurumi and at that point Tsukishima, Kikuta, Koito and Nikaido arrive. Again, Kikuta is the one in charge as he orders them to step away from Usami. Tsukishima has his rifle already drawn and Kikuta has his pair of revolvers ready. This really shows that the 27th is ready for action.
The next page has Koito taking charge, telling the others to stand down so that he can attach with his saber and prevent the chances of friendly fire hitting Usami.

I don’t think Koito is being an idiot rushing in without thinking in this instance. Instead, he’s thinking of the best course of action with the ‘safest’ option to try to help Usami without harming him. The fact that he makes his order and then gives a rational reason tells me that Koito is becoming more mature in how he thinks about things. Unfortunately, he doesn’t know that Ushiyama is no some normal guy. It is Nikaido who advises against close combat and Koito doesn’t even manage to get that close as Tsukishima tells him to dodge as he can see that Usami is about to get tossed into the air.
The next page is a repeat of Ushiyama’s ability to toss people long distances. Recall that back when Hijikata first recruited him to join his faction, he tossed a naked prostitute through the air in a similar fashion. Tsukishima’s warning is enough for Koito to show his athletic abilities and we are even given a slow motion panel of Koito looking at Usami’s face.

I think this shows that Koito and Tsukishima have reached a better level of communication between the two characters. I think if this were back before Karafuto, the timing would have been off and instead of avoiding the UFO (Usami Flying Object) Koito instead would have been taken out by Usami. But he doesn’t get hit by Usami, he’s able to dodge and they are able to quickly recover to pursue Ushiyama, who smartly jumps into the brewery to escape knowing he’s outnumbered since they have rifles and revolvers. This was a situation that could have backfired, but it worked out well as there is good cohesion between Tsukishima and Koito.
With Ushiyama’s escape, Kikuta takes charge again. The fact that Tsukishima has been working with him on and off for a long time likely means that he respects Kikuta as a strategist. We’ve seen indications that Kikuta thinks quickly on his feet and has good basic urban combat knowledge. The failing of Tsukishima, Koito and Kikuta is an inability to reign in Usami.

They saved him fro Ushiyama and ran into the brewery while he gets up on his own and with his bayonet targets his favorite tanuki, Kadokura. It is clear that Usami’s obsession with Kadokura goes completely against his current orders from Tsurumi to catch Jack. For a man who was dedicated to catching him to show his worth to Tsurumi to receive his love, it is clear his love of Kadokura overrides that. Could it be that Kadokura is Usami’s Tsurumisexuality kryptonite?
The adrenaline filled chapter continues with our dapper convict approaching the wee babe Kantarou. Hijikata’s aura is strong enough (indicated by that intense screentone action!) that Jack turns and Kantarou stands up to slow down his escape.

Kantarou is slashed by him, but by slowing him, Hijikata is able to pull up his Winchester and aim at the killer. As a result, Hijikata proves to be an accurate shot hitting him in the left shoulder and takes a few more shots before he escapes around a corner. Hijikata orders Nagakura to launch their firework. This is similar to Abashiri where an artificial light source leads to downstream effects for various players. First off, the result is confusion. Sugimoto is confused and Shiraishi wonders what is happening. Boutarou asks for clarification for the direction of the killer and Toni makes it clear that the gunfire was Hijikata’s, he suggests that they split up. The firework also shows us the location of Vasily.

He’s on a roof with his mosin-nagant ready and looking through his binoculars in search of Ogata. The next page is a dramatic zoom in on a fire watchtower. Thanks to @goldenkamuyhunting updating me on the information from @osomanga that this is a fire watchtower. I had been looking for what it was and the best guess I had come up with was an early grain elevator due to the double roof and the location near the brewery. I thought this was a decent guess since most of the agricultural development was driven by Americans in Hokkaido and the wooden grain elevator was once a hallmark of a huge portion of North America. Noda uses classic manga techniques to zoom in on Ogata’s location from Vasily’s point of view to show that he’s spotted his target.

This creates dramatic tension indicating that Ogata is potentially in trouble as he’s been spotted by Vasily and he’s instead paying attention to the action on the ground. Gasp! Ogata is in danger! Of course, I wasn’t worried since, well Ogata is a main character and Vasily isn’t exactly fighting fair for their ‘rematch’ that Ogata isn’t really even aware of.
Hijikata checks in with Kantarou, as he quickly bandages his forehead to stop the blood from running onto his face. Hijikata is proud of him and gives him words of encouragement that he isn’t the type of man to turn his back in battle. Of course he tells him to follow him and Kantarou is beaming in pride and excitement!

We don’t see enough of Kantarou, but I’m honestly proud of him here. He’s a capable gangster, and is becoming more than just a gangster. I mean his eyes are almost sparkling and the screentone behind him is sparkling. I hope Kantarou doesn’t meet an unfortunate end, he’s a solid guy.
Sugimoto, Asirpa and Shiraishi catch up to Kirawus finally who must have hung back and wasn’t noticed by the 7th. Sugimoto of course charges into the building with Asirpa following close behind as indicated on the next page. Sadly, Kirawus isn’t fast enough to get Sugimoto and Asirpa to pause and he only is able to finally tell Shiraishi that there are five soldiers in there.

Of course Shiraishi is concerned and by time he enters, he’s become separated form Sugimoto and Asirpa as he tries to find them and warns them the 7th is inside. Only after some time does Asirpa realize Shiraishi is missing. Yep, excellent leadership skills there Sugimoto. You can’t even keep your party together!

Sugimoto has his rifle ready as he thinks perhaps he’s found Shiraishi. But of course not! It is Nikaido and he’s ready to kill Sugimoto as Sugimoto aims his rifle with his eyes white with murder intent.
All in all this was an epic failure of so many levels. Shiraishi the brains of their team is lost, Asirpa blindly followed Sugimoto and now he’s up against a man who is beyond obsessed with killing him.
Tumblr started to be weird so, I’ll have to split this meta into two parts. Sometimes it can’t deal with images . . .

Some Qrow Background
So, I’ve got a lil bit of Qrow meta I s’pose, primarily focused around the Branwen tribe and Qrow’s pre-Beacon youth. But first, a few small headcanons that’ll be explained later
Qrow and Raven were not born into the tribe, but they spent most of their childhood in it. They were orphans when the tribe took them in.
By the time they were 15, they had each participated in raids and yes, even killed.
Qrow was devoutly loyal to the tribe before he went to Beacon.
He drinks out of shame, guilt, and desperation to avoid his memories.
Now, let’s get into the meat of this meta, shall we? (Trigger warnings for: child abuse, grooming, murder, alcoholism, & child soldiers below)
Qrow and Raven were born to two loving parents in a small settlement outside of Haven. Things went well enough for the first four years of their life, though Qrow was a bit different from most kids. He seemed to get hurt more often than usual, and things seemed to break when he was around. Still, his parents didn’t get angry, and he was a relatively happy kid.
When Qrow and Raven were four, this all changed. The Branwen tribe attacked the village, killing most of the inhabitants, including Qrow and Raven’s parents. By some stroke of luck, the children were hidden during the initial fighting, and only came out after the dust had settled. They didn’t really understand what had happened, only that things were bad and they couldn’t find their parents. So they turned to the strange adults going in and out of the buildings.
The then-leader of the tribe ‘adopted’ them, taking them under her wing. After a few days, she gave them new names, the ones they still bear today: Qrow, for his tendency to seemingly always be where something was going wrong, and Raven to make the twins a matching set. It amused the leader, so that is what happened. Just as the leader demanded that - once the twins were about seven years old - they be taught to fight for themselves.
Qrow and Raven learned how to fend for themselves the hard way. The members of the tribe were not allowed to kill the twins, but they were able to beat them down, over and over. The lessons were good, but incredibly harsh. They were taught that the strong dominated the weak, and that that was how life was supposed to be. The lesson was cemented with equally harsh but effective lessons, and they fought grimm while on patrol of the tribe’s camp numerous times during this period.
When the twins were ten years old, they went on their first raid. It was a test of their strength, their resolve and dedication to the tribe. It was during this raid that Qrow first killed another human. Over the next five years, he and Raven would kill more people for the tribe, going on more and more raids and honing their skills further. The twins were the tribe’s best weapons, skilled killers and combatants with incredible teamwork. They were almost inseparable, and a deadlier duo you couldn’t find in the forests of Mistral. When they were fifteen, this training culminated in the tribe leader sending the pair to Beacon to learn how to kill huntsmen. To protect the tribe better from those who otherwise would have hunted them.
They passed the entry exam with flying colors, already more than experienced with combat despite being younger than most students. They were teamed up with Summer Rose and Taiyang Xiao Long in Team STRQ.
Over the course of their academic career, Qrow began to see the evil the tribe had committed. He had his eyes opened to how life on Remnant could be. Where the strong protected the weak, and where the strong and weak could help one another. He learned about true morality, and saw the evil he had done...and felt ashamed, and guilty. Memories he had once been proud of came back to torment him, and the skill for violence that had been honed in him became a point of shame, and a thing he worked hard to lock away outside of true combat.
Qrow leaped at the chance to serve Ozpin, to give his life the purpose he so freshly lacked, and pay the man back for the gifts he had given Qrow (even if they made it hard to live with himself). The wedge that his change put between his sister and he went unnoticed by Qrow for quite awhile, until shortly before she and Tai became a proper item.

How to be Purposeful With Your Purpose-Driven Content [Examples]
Editor’s note: You may have missed the original version of this article published a few years ago. Purpose-driven marketing is an even hotter topic today so we’ve updated the post and included some fresh examples.
Most marketers (and many businesses) recognize the value of developing content based on a shared interest in supporting a worthy cause or taking a stand.
Success in purpose-driven content marketing, though, requires you to go beyond that. It demands that you execute the right purpose-driven content marketing strategy in an authentic, organic way that brings benefit to everyone involved.
Successful purpose-driven content marketing must feel like an integral part of the brand, not a one-off. For example, simply changing your company’s Facebook profile image to a cause-colored ribbon for a month is an isolated tactic, not an element of an organic, purpose-driven content marketing strategy.
Changing a Facebook image to a cause-colored ribbon isn't purpose-driven #contentmarketing strategy. @AnnGynn Click To Tweet
A successful strategy is built for the long haul and speaks to the goals and interests of the brand, its employees, and the customers (or prospects). And that shared interest doesn’t revolve around profits for the business. Nearly eight in 10 Americans say they are more loyal to purpose-driven brands than traditional brands, according to a 2018 study from Cone/Porter Novelli. In that same research, 68% say they are more willing to share content from purpose-driven brands with their social networks than content from traditional companies.
68% Americans are more willing to share content from purpose-driven brands than traditional companies. @Cone Click To Tweet
Purpose-driven brands also resonate with their employees. As Content Marketing World presenter Jeff Fromm says, “(Purpose) is important because it impacts employees and consumers. I can’t find too many examples of successful brands that don’t have incredibly powerful employee cultures in addition to consumer cultures.”
An excerpt from Kantar Consulting’s Purpose 2020: Inspiring Purpose-Led Growth report offers a simple way to understand the breadth of purpose for a brand: “Today, employees want to do more than sell cars. And today customers want to do more than buy cars.”

Know your purpose
The first step in empowering your brand’s purpose is to recognize what that purpose is. The Kantar Purpose 2020 report explains the differences among purpose, vision, mission, and corporate social responsibility. Simply put, your purpose should be about your positive impact on the world. Your purpose should not be about the positive impact on your company (though that’s an indirect benefit).
Now, let’s get into detail about some brands that know their purpose and are executing it successfully.

Answer burning questions
Axe, a Unilever brand of grooming products, focuses on a young male demographic. It created a content campaign around Google search requests that start with “is it OK for men to …?” The purpose was “to break the cycle of toxic masculinity by providing guys with resources to live more freely,” according to this AdWeek article. That purpose speaks to both the brand and its audience.

As part of the initiative, Axe, according to AdWeek, developed partnerships with three nonprofits – Ditch the Label (to create a digital network to support guys struggling with toxic masculinity), Promundo (to research stereotypes and subsequent challenges), and The Representation Project (to sponsor the campus tour of its film The Mask You Live In). And Axe asked influencers to share their #itsokforguys stories.

Make the cause logical to brand
Taxi-alternative provider Lyft has partnered with several voting-advocate organizations to encourage people to vote in the U.S. elections. It used its social media channels to remind people about voting deadlines. It has given its drivers voter registration handouts and key voter information to distribute. And it’s hosted in-office voter registration for employees.
Lyft also smartly connects the purpose to its reason for being in business – offering free rides for underserved communities where residents may not be able to afford transportation to get to the polls and discount codes for others who use Lyft to get to their voting locations.

Teach and empower
Eighty-seven percent of surveyed U.S. consumers in 2017 said they’d purchase a product because the company supported a cause they cared about, according to a Cone survey.
Mattel – known as the creator of Barbie – is a good example of a brand that recognizes its products’ purpose can have a societal purpose too. Its purpose is fueled by the findings of a study revealing that “girls lose the confidence to imagine they can be anything they want to be. That pivotal moment where she loses her former confidence is called the dream gap.”
Mattel launched the Dream Gap project, a long-term initiative to fund continuing research exploring why young girls often lose confidence, as well as efforts to close the perceptual gap between boys and girls. It also is developing content on its popular Barbie platforms to speak directly to girls and their parents, including its YouTube channel with over 5 million subscribers and a dedicated site with tips and insight for adults.

Use your differentiator
Dave’s Killer Bread used its founder’s story to become a thought leader in the second-chance employment movement. Before founding the bakery, Dave Dahl was an ex-con who was given a chance by his older brother. DKB hires the best candidate for the job – regardless of any past criminal background, as David Hessekiel explains in this Forbes article.

Through sharing stories of second chances and redemption, the brand resonated emotionally with consumers. In 2017, Dave’s Killer Bread grew by more than 75% over 2016. A winner of a Halo Award, the DKB Foundation in 2017 hosted Second Chance Summits in Seattle and Atlanta, created a Second Chance Job Fair in Seattle and had 750 unique users of its Second Chance Employment Kit. Dave Dahl has become a go-to resource on the topic of hiring people with criminal backgrounds.

Target your targets’ causes
Heidi Cohen, president of Riverside Marketing Strategies, points to Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream as the poster child for cause marketing embraced by its customers.
Ben and Jerry’s donates 7.5% of its annual pre-tax profits to its foundation, which supports community-oriented projects locally and globally. “We believe that the strongest bond you can build with your consumers is over shared values,” CMO Dave Stever told the American Marketing Association.

The graphic above illustrates how Ben and Jerry’s defines its mission in three parts – it doesn’t forget the traditional business side (product and economic), but it makes sure to include its social mission or purpose (its positive impact in the world).
And, the company notes, “All three parts must thrive equally in a manner that commands deep respect for individuals in and outside the company and supports the communities of which they are a part.”
Animals always win
Gini Dietrich, CEO of Arment Dietrich, says a lot of animal-focused businesses do purpose-driven content really well. BarkBox, ThunderShirt, Kong, and Frobo all have programs that help to give back to the animal community, thus getting them in front of their target audience in a way that helps build trust and loyalty.

Take on an issue
Global beauty care company L‘Oréal partnered with Opinionway to do a study of Europeans to better understand the reasons women encounter disparities in the field of science and the obstacles they face in their professional career. In 2015, it released the survey results (e.g., two-thirds of Europeans didn’t think women were capable of achieving high-level scientific positions).
That same year, L‘Oréal launched #ChangeTheNumbers, a digital campaign to engage the public to help change attitudes and stereotypes. While the campaign is over, mainstream media and research publications continue to report on its study results.

Tell inspiring stories and inspire others
Author and marketer Anne Janzer offers Dick’s Sporting Goods as a good example. Its Sports Matter initiative donates money to youth sports teams that have lost their funding. “Customers and employees alike can get behind this kind of marketing, and it reflects well on the company’s core values and offerings,” she wrote in response to the original version of this article.
Dick’s created a website, www.sportsmatter.org (Note: it doesn’t use the brand name in the domain), where it shares powerful stories – in video, images, and text – of those who have benefited from the effort. The website also highlights ways to donate and how to apply for funding. This video tells the story of female high school hockey players in Alaska who thought they were kicking off their final season of organized hockey – until Dick’s Sporting Goods stepped in.

Find your purpose and build a strategy
Given the growing interest of consumers in patronizing brands that have a purpose beyond selling products or services, developing a purpose-driven content marketing strategy is essential. It enables you to clearly state your company’s larger purpose – something your employees, customers, and prospects want to know. Then you can build your content, delivering text, videos, social media, live events, and more that serves your business and your targeted audience.
Done well, purpose-related marketing will enable you to build trust and rapport with your targeted audience. That’s not altruism, it’s good business.
What brands have you seen doing purpose-driven content marketing well? Share in the comments.

Laughed at by your family for wanting to follow your passion? Success is the best revenge. With David Horvath
Have you ever felt like you’re not getting the support you need to succeed, especially from the people closest to you? Then you need to read every word of this interview with David Horvath. Co-creator of the globally successful Uglydoll brand. This is one of my all time favorite interviews.
I have a lot of respect for how amazingly generous and open David is. He shares the struggles he faced and overcame to follow his childhood dream. A dream that, it seemed no one else wanted him to achieve. Read it, learn from it, take action on what you learn. And don’t ever let those who don’t have the courage to follow their own dreams, prevent you from following yours…
Uglydoll Kaiju
Angel: David, with the widespread success of the Uglydoll you are being hailed as one of the top character designers in the world, but did you have this passion for toys as a kid?
David: When I was 12 the class was going around discussing what they wanted for Xmas, etc. The boys wanted Atari, footballs, etc. I already had all of that in my garage so I said I wanted GOLION, a die cast metal Japanese robot. Many of the kids laughed until I explained that it said “ages 13 and up” on the box, meaning they weren’t old enough to play with it just yet. Then they kinda just stayed away. So in a way, the cool kids became the outsiders and I stayed put.
The Cool Kids Became Outsider And I Stayed Put
Angel: So it sounds like you chose to follow your own path from an early age. Did you get any support from the people around you?
David: My mother was a designer at Mattel for many years. I wish that had helped me some but the honest truth is, she wasn’t permitted to discuss her job with me and she stayed loyal to that golden requirement. The only way I knew she still worked there was through catalogs and purple He-Man errors brought home. But those catalogs were inspiring. I always knew that I wanted to tell stories through toys.
Bossy Bear
The resistance came from my father, who told me that surrounding myself with toys and quitting Art Center to go work at a toy store would never amount to me making my own toys. He would tell all his professional contacts and co-workers about his waste-of-life son locked up in his toy room, working at a toy shop. He made many a famous or well known professional in the art and design world shake their head at me (being told his version, not mine). So there was resistance. Luckily, I didn’t care. He wanted to be a photographer more than anything in the world, but went into advertising because it seemed more stable to him. Avoiding your life passion out of fear is a no-no in my book.
When he would freak out over why I had so many toys (over 40 of them!) I would ask him why science majors had beakers and slides all around their room. He didn’t get it. Anyway, when I was 19, I did indeed quit advertising at Art Center so that I could go work at a local boutique toy shop, to learn the ins and outs of non-mass market toy distribution and observe moms, dads, and kids buying toys in a retail environment. That job also got me into toy fair, and got me deep into the side of toys I knew would prove to be very important if I wanted to make my dreams come true and go at it on my own.
Making toys means nothing if you don’t have any clue what will happen to them once their done. Now I hear my father clips articles and such, but from my early teens until well after we started Uglydoll, he told me toys and those stuffed doo-dads were a waste. It’s easy to get behind your kid when he’s in the paper, but with our daughter I want to be sure to be there for her during the process, not the irrelevant outcome. I hope I can use my past run in with this resistance as a life lesson so that I can do better than he did when raising my own child.
Uglydoll Cinko
Angel: So your love of toys was a hard path to follow then, but what about your growth as an artist?
David: I didn’t set out to be an artist. I still draw the same way I did when I was 10. Is it art? I don’t really care but I did see a certain path I wanted to take as someone who spends their time working on their own toys and children’s books. It was mostly mental maybe? I knew this is how it was going to go, as I wouldn’t have it any other way. Many months on my sister’s floor in the early days, and skipping meals sometimes when things got serious at the start. But that stuff is always thrown in to test how dedicated you are. I always say if someone from the future travels back in time to tell you your life long dream will fail 100%, and you still go for it anyway, it will work.
Angel: You clearly had passion, did you set any specific goals from the beginning or did you wing it as you went along?
David: There was no winging it and the plan was always very specific. We get tons of emails asking how to do XYZ, which is great. I pretty much reply the same way each time, that in my experience, taking the same path someone else did results in getting close but never where you want to end up. Ignoring those paths and making up your own route leads you to where you really belong, wherever that may be.
I Use This Now Pretty Much Scientifically Proven Method By The Hour And It Works
Angel: Can you share any techniques you use to help you focus on achieving your goals?
David: Ugh I wish you asked before the “Secret” came out, but actually I have always believed in the law of attraction since I first read about it many years ago. I use this now pretty much scientifically proven method by the hour and it works. Your mind effects the universe, and it also creates it. Your thoughts absolutely determine your reality. How you generally feel inside and what thoughts you generally carry in your head is what’s going to keep coming at you. This is a huge part. The biggest. The rest is all minor detail, actually.
Uglydoll Wage Green Kaiju
Angel: What about the excuses many people have for not following their creative dreams; no money, time, credibility, support etc. Did you ever confront these same doubts?
David: Those aren’t excuses. Those are hurdles. Just need to jump. We had zero help. Zero cash. Ah but we had a needle, a scanner, a pen, an old borrowed digital camera, and a mac lap top which I got by selling my 2 older macs from when I had a job before. That first sewn doll sold for $30.00 And then the next one sold. Soon we had $3000!. So we used that to make more and keep it all growing. I had one design-ish art job after graduating from Parsons with Sun-Min. It didn’t last long. The first few weeks were great and I had a lot of fun animating in Flash until the boss told me to change a color to purple, and that was it for me. And I was super zapped by the end of the day anyway, too tired to work on my own stuff. Lesser paying jobs, be it retail stores or coffee houses, are great because you get so pissed off that your dream work comes out no matter what. But a “real” job with co-workers wanting to hang out and drink, late hours, weekends, and comfortable money coming in, is a dream killer.
When we decided to start for real, I slept on my sisters floor for 9 months eating not much more than cereal, plain white bread, and salads, and then moved to a tiny illegally erected bedroom within an industrial building in the then very scary DUMBO, Brooklyn, surviving on a daily menu of egg on a roll in the morning, a bagel and coffee for lunch, and really good $3.00 chicken legs from a local corner stand at night. Rent was a few hundred bucks, paid for by selling everything I owned in LA, keeping 5 days of clothes and not much else. I bought an air bed but had no table, so the computer was on the bed. $5.00 a day was the food limit. Laundry was once a week, and monthly subway passes were $80. I had nothing else and often went with out the coffee. A Japanese magazine shooting “famous artists” homes came to do a shoot, and elected to take photos of someone else’s much nicer room in the building just to avoid wasting a whole day. They even dressed it with our dolls. ( I tried to tell them.)
Uglydoll Babo
One Guy Called Me A Millionaire, On The Day I Had To Skip Lunch To Survive
I lived this way for the first 2 years of Uglydoll when everyone was calling me a millionaire. One guy called me just that on a day I had to skip lunch to survive. Then Sun-Min [my partner and co-designer] and I basically lived on the road when we went into full production and sales grew. Until we were married, we lived in hotels, traveling from trade show to trade show, driving across the US, stopping by small towns to find small shops.
Get As Much Input As You Can And Then Don’t Follow Any it
Angel: Did you ever go out and actively ask people for help and advice?
David: I realized when I was much younger after calling up Gary Baseman for some very good advice that I was getting great advice on how to do things a way they had already been done. The best advice I can give is to get as much input as you can, and then don’t follow any of it.
Angel: Now you’ve been in the industry for many years do you find it easier to call on your creativity at will? Do you have any tips for being more creative more often?
David: I just make what comes out. For the Ugly Guide books, there’s no sketches. I draw and write with a pen. No eraser, so it’s all a mistake. As for how to be more creative more often, sit down and work. Done deal. Even if crap comes out, sitting down and getting to work is what matters. Read “The War Of Art” by Steven Pressfield. That will help with the procrastination, if that’s the issue. That book was a great help and I am pretty sure the above is a quote from that book. It’s ingrained into my brain, so plagiarism not intended.
Icebat Kaiju
Angel: How do you keep your energy up with all the work required to make it in this business?
David: Meditation. Avoid all drugs and late week nights out. Basically be what losers call a “loser”. Stay home and make stuff for other people to go do. Avoid the “scene” and avoid hanging with the top artists in them. Scene-sters and others trying to “make it” like to keep each other in check and hold each other back, and they hate anyone who breaks away.
Angel: And your views on fitness?
David: Mental fitness is just as important as physical. Food is important. No soda. I quit all soda. But what’s most important is monitoring your daily, almost hourly mindset. Do you carry “Life is tough, life sucks” in your head all day? Then it will be. Careful, because the music, movies and games you repeat over and over too often can keep you in a certain mindset, good or bad.
Angel: What about the rock and roll lifestyle of being a hip artist and designer?
David: If you’re living a rock and roll life style, you get your photos in the backs of magazines only you and your buddies read and not much else.
My title is : Nerdy Japanese robot collector and strong believer in UFOs, ghosts, and the paranormal. The artist part is helping me save my pennies so I can switch over to UFO research full time. For real. See my blog for more on that. It’s boring though, so careful.
Angel: Ghost hunting aside, how often in your creative work do you find yourself doing things that you are afraid of?
David: My daily routine is wake up, do things that make me afraid, eat, sleep, draw, repeat. If you’re afraid, you’re on the right track. Keep at it! Just don’t discuss it or dwell on it.
Fear is fine but don’t use it as a way to not do what you need to do. Talking about your fear can lead to a weekly Friday night talk about your fears while drinking beer. Forget that. Do your work, then drink.
Angel: How often do you find yourself failing at something or abandoning a piece of work?
David: The real failure is not starting. So, never.
Angel: Isn’t it a shame they don’t teach that approach in school!
David: Math was my favorite art class. I used to fill in my test answers with UFO drawings. I got an F but was I wrong? That’s the key. But if you get all A’s in school, what does that mean? Good job little Johnny, you memorized what we told you to and filled in the blanks. Maybe it’s better to fail. I want to send our daughter to a school where they have a good balance of math, science, nutrition, financial planning, no tests, and David Icke. So basically home school.
Early on I taught a class, once a week, at Otis Art School for one year. It was supposed to be a flash animation class, but I turned it into a self help class. The class was called “quit, get your tuition back before the deadline, and use that money to make your dreams come true, because this place is simply training you to work for someone else”.
UMA (Unidentified Mysterious Animals)
Don’t Reveal Your Plan To Anyone
Angel: Are there any lessons you’ve learned about money that you’d like to pass on to other people just starting out?
David: Money! I’ll never forget our second year at Toy Fair. Many designer toy production houses set up booths after seeing how well we seemingly did the year before. As I passed the booths, one of the guys was rubbing his hands, literally, and told me “well, I’m ready to make a million dollars!” I looked back and said “You mean spend a million dollars, right?” He looked at me with a sort of ghost face, and sure enough, he didn’t set his booth up the following year. There’s nobody out there making instant cashola. There’s no “All you got to do is ________”. Even the guys you think hit it rich, did so well after you thought they did. A few smarty’s make it SEEM like they are making it big time, with hopes of selling their brand or company and its “perceived value” to larger companies looking to grab up a “hip, hot property/brand”, but no…its going to be a lot of work and nobody with some magic money wand is coming.
Hopefully. When the money comes in, save it! Or better, grow it. You’re going to need most of it to keep it all going. Making a lot of money costs a lot of money! And according to the music videos, when you make it big time, being a millionaire means buying nice cars and big houses, right? Well turns out, those are expensive!!! But the money is not as important as the “starting out” part… START! That’s all you have to do. Really. You’ll be surprised to find how few people do. Don’t tell ANYONE what you’re up to either. Don’t reveal your plan to ANYONE! Not because it’s a secret, but because something in the universe happens when you tell us what you’re going to do instead of just doing it. The universe takes it all away and you never start. Tell us what you did, not what you’re going to do. Then you’ll be fine.
Angel: With success comes more attention, is life in the public eye what you thought it would be when you set out?
David: Some kid posted a self made animated movie up on one of those movie sharing websites with characters that looked just like ours. So we made him take it down. Sad, because he was very talented and got a million hits. He called us evil and posted that we are evil all over the internet. Many fans of his movie called us evil too. Should we see him in person, who knows if there’s a danger. But the truth is, if a giant entertainment company or toy company is looking to rip us off (and they are) and sees a kid with imitations of our stuff, they copy THAT instead of ours…and when we go after the said big company, they claim that our stuff is not unique, using those copy cat works as examples. And if we don’t go after everyone, they can claim we are selective. And there’s a lot of copy cats. We work very hard to stop them. So we make a lot of enthusiastic kids with a lack of understanding in the copyright & trademark realm very upset. I don’t like that part. That kid was very talented and the animation was a college final. His professor should have told him way beforehand.
Angel: So how do you handle negative attention?
David: After an art show with Dehara at Giant Robot, a boyfriend of one of the employees, who was apparently helping out, came over to let me know that he hated my work, and that he believed my work missed an opportunity to “say something” to the viewer. (I made drawings of sad fat little kids raised on junk food emerging from video game packaging and internet browsers.)
I was fine with his comments, and after listening as intently as I do to the good comments, I started to move on with a sort of “Thanks for sharing your thoughts” polite kinda way.
Uh but he kept at it, sort of chasing me around and started to add insults such as “if someone gave one of these to me as a gift, I would throw it away” (which is a horrible thing to do, I think. A gift is a gift, good or bad.) Anyway I soon realized, sadly, that my first true live and in-person critic had turned out to be not much more than a drunkard heckler who only wanted to somehow lift himself up by trying to bring me down. I then realized he really was helping out there and his job was to take photos of anyone who bought the art. I always buy a few of Dehara’s pieces when he has a show so as he took my photo, he said stuff like “try to look like you care.” Etc to try to get a rise out of me. I didn’t say anything, and I thanked him for taking my photo. There’s no come back to drunken jealousy, so you should never try. It wastes your energy.
I’m human and a few things bring me down. But a joker like that never could. I felt embarrassed for him, because I know what makes people say such things. It’s the rot you feel when you don’t do your own work. When you don’t do your work and let fear take over for too long, you begin to hate seeing others get theirs done and up on the wall, page, screen, etc.
I only remember him because nobody before him or after him has said anything negative about my work to me in person. Uh, except for some of my past art teachers. If you do your work, and know you gave it your all, and if you live your life the way you really know you were born to, other people’s negativity seems to roll right off.
