Question for little baby Loom.

You said that his jaw is weak, can he still eat food on his own or does he need a feeding tube?

And related to that. How do Mers feed their babies? Do they do it like birds or do they give them solid food?

So to start with, most baby mers can eat solid food even straight out of the egg! The baby bird method of tearing up fish into smaller pieces would be common practice too, especially since young pups will instinctively cling to their parent(s) or caretakers until they've grown enough to be able to keep up in water and so wouldn't be able to hunt for themselves. They could eat small prey like shrimp without aid if given to them though! (Unless they be minature variants in which case they'd need even those torn up)

In Loon's case however, he would need all his food mashed up to start with because he'd struggle with swallowing it properly. He's gradually weened onto solids over the weeks as his jaw strengthens more, and while he will one day be able to eat solid food properly, he'll always prefer softer prey as it's easier on his jaw and throat. Food like squid, octopus and molluscs without the shells would be his preference!

Speaking of molluscs, he would eventually learn to be a very effective hunter of them! Because what he lacks in jaw strength he makes up for by having very strong fins which have powerful crushing grip strength, strong enough to crack open clams even when he's still a pup (Eclipse and Ruin learn early on that if Loon wants to cling he is going to cling and there's no way to make him let go)

If I were to describe the moments I get inspiration for Apex Polarity it's like either being bit by a fish that is convinced I am it's soul mate from another life and won't let go, or a miniature avalanche like a snowcone with rainbows being dumped on your head. But instead of brain freeze you get lovely ideas!

So I did just that! I made another piece of pixel art. I had a few ideas, including things like some sort of penguin Y/N or a snowman of big fish man himself. I wanted to make something for Harpy!Y/N in particular since I hadn't don't anything for them or their AU and it's my favorite iteration of Apex Polarity.

Family Under the Ice

This one depicts Eclipse and his family of four swimming together below the frozen surface. With young Sun and Moon in tow, Harpy!Y/N close beside them and the shapes of fish (yes those weird lumpy dark things are fish!) against the light from above.

I tried my best to scale Harpy!Y/N right, but as there is no official reference, I used the various fanart and deduction to decide they're probably around the size of Eclipse's torso and upper half, give or take. Perfect for Eclipse to use his big fishy effect to its fullest and to not be inconvenient for hugs!

The hardest part by far though, wasn't the ice, even though it took multiple layers upon layers before it finally looked more than just a bunch of dark blobs, the colors or the lighting, it was drawing SILHOUETTES in pixel art.

This took HOURS, it was so difficult to get the shape and size right, especially at the scale I was using (64x64, the same as the last) which left me with not much room for detail.

One example of the many iterations I had to make -

The original sprites for the siren babies where literally fishtails on chicken drumsticks with heads because I didn't think I'd be able to squeeze as much percieveable (or at least as much as I could get) detail into them with how small they were compared to Eclipse and Y/N. They also had to be small enough for Y/N to hold both without it looking ridiculous, but not so small that they barely looked cohesive with the rest of the silhouettes.

Colorless, human design and some info under the cut.

So, the mer AU.

Some species of mermaids are known to haunt humans when they are hungry, other species don't. Sirens are known to sing (or scream at the sky, if you want to call it that) when a storm is coming.

Sun is inspired by flying fish, and the tongue by a sea butterfly's mouth. (because of the "wing" fins I would consider him a siren, but a lot of mythological creatures are called sirens so idk). He's clingy and an attention hoarder.

Moon is inspired by abyssal fish, lophiiformes (specifically those with antennas) and black dragon fish. He's pretty chill as long as is well fed. He purposely creeps out others with his antennas, and hates Sun's tongue thing.

And Eclipse is inspired by axolotls and leafy sea dragons. They're pretty pacific but won't hesitate in defending themselves when they can't find a way out. Their tail is strong, they can send you flying across the room.

Here is the human design (my selfinsert, Fern) + outfits and a size chart of them long boys.

In this AU Fern is a student at a marine biology university. They conserve and rescue marine life. Some of the rescued especies being the celestial trio, which were assigned under Ferns care with help from another student.

Some images of the three together in one picture that were supposed to be the header of the post but didn't decide which to chose so I'm putting here my 5 favourites. They don't quite fit well 'cuz I drew them separately.

Solar is the designated babysitter while he stays in the reef recovering ^^ Eclipse makes sure to warn his pups (mainly the twins) not to bite him, Solar has enough scars as is

Eclipse is is considered to be quite large by the standards of other eclipse merr.

Eclipse was killed by Moon and Solar. The two of them blew up his nest while he was resting from a fight with Sun. Since then, he has been spotted miraculously alive. Both The Creator and Dr. Newton deny their involvement in Eclipse's revival

He is in immense pain 24/7 due to both him suffering the effects of getting blown up as well as the Newton Star's affect on his body, slowly eating away at his body and replacing it with anti mater created whenever the Star's power is harnessed, which is all the time because Eclipse would die without it

Eclipse had his star fragment, the star shaped objects suspended in orbs that floats between the tail fins of the merr that acts as their main source of energy, destroyed when he was blown up and now relies on the Newton Star to survive.

Due to the Newton star taking a role similar to a star fragment, it has currently taken the appearance of one but it is able to take on many shapes depending on the will of its owner

Eclipse dislikes how brightly coloured he is as it makes him an easy target, the sparkles from whatever the Newton Star's doing is not helping with that

He has 4 arms due to the Newton Star mutating his body but is able to retract them using a sort of magic

May i offer some mer au during these trying times?

SO- i've been rambling a whole lot with @thedemonsurfer and @basilbots about an au where Eclipse 3.0 is a fisherman who rescues a mer Ruin after being caught by poachers (more info under the cut!)

So like my runaways au this is set in the main fnaf verse instead of the sams one. Eclipse was a dca model that got decommissioned but reactivated to be sold as a work robot so a lot of his memory is very janky.

He was bought and made to work for a shady fishing company (borderline pirates) where the boat he is on catches a roughed up little mer with a crooked tail and missing fins. Eclipse is made to guard the mer whom he sort of befriends over time and once they reach the shipping warehouse he has a change of heart when he realises this fish is sentient (and shaking hands in trapped and alone)

He sets Ruin free (burning down the company in the process) and finds a new home and life working as a free robot for a smaller but more legit fishing business in an out of the way fishing town. However Ruin turns up at his new home some months later and- they were roommates!

I have a few oneshots drafted and planned for this already! Butters (demonsurfer) already wrote a oneshot for it which you can read here! (Please go read it it gives me so much soul sustenance)

Mer!Eclipse question! When courting his feeshwife did he just accidentally rizz her up or was there some courting dances like with regular fish?

As a fish owner of a gay, dramatic betta I can't help but imagine him flexing out his fins and doing a lil shimmy all 'look at me' style like my betta does for his loach love

Somewhat both.

Wanting to find a mate and singing to find one was definitely on purpose. So was the little flirts, the grooming, the singing together.

However there were some moments were both of them accidentally rizzed the other, thou this was more on Eclipses' side.    

Mer can do something called firering up, reptiles do this I just yoinked it from them, basically they increase the blood flow to certain parts of their body which causes the color to darken.

Firering up is used for threat displays, to show mood (when very pissed off) and of course mating displays. The darker the color the more attractive.

There were a couple of times when Eclipses was pissed about something and Star was just sitting in the corner breathing heavily or hardly breathing.

And as you can see, yes Sun and Moon can fire up as well, but Stras genes are strong  💪
