Finally managed to record a bit of David at curtain call 😍
Brilliant seeing this incredible production once again - and getting to see what's different and what isn't 🥹🥰
(Please don't repost ☺️)
#david tennant#west end macbeth#macbeth#Completely failed to record my own videos at the Donmar#since I couldn't get myself to just hold up a camera in their faces rather than joining in on the clapping#so also didn't record the whole thing this time but at least a bit of it ❤️#and ah the handle is from twitter 🙈#also I really need to learn to make better gifs and/or video edits because the quality definitely looks better on my phone than this 🙈#Edit: Looks like he has tried not to kick as high this week from what I have seen 🥺#I hope that's just random and not because they saw the photos and videos and were like maybe try not to show too much#Because my main reason for uploading this was just that he's absolutely adorable and such a delight to watch 🥹#and it's not like there's actually anything to see besides the shorts and his knees which are on full display throughout anyway#and will probably be on display for the filmed version as well#So hope it's just that either I haven't seen any videos from the same angle or it's just random how he ends up doing it#please keep up with the cute twirl and kick DT ❤️

I just love how Steve Harrington was supposed to be killed off after a couple of episodes but Joe Keery was so charming and so likable they rewrote the whole season and show to keep him alive like he really Darren Criss’d it. He is that bitch. He gave the Duffers the ol razzle dazzle and now he IS the show for most normies. My uncle who has never watched ST and doesn’t even have Netflix loves Steve on vibes alone. The people’s prince.
#stranger things#steve harrington#Joe Keery#he just showed up on set with his big puppy dog eyes and princess Diana hair and said I’m stealthy like a ninja#and the duffers were like okay I guess we’ll keep him#and now he’s the star#at least he is in my book#and I bet if Eddie comes back it will be for the same reason#since they mentioned they regretted filming the death scene first after realizing how charming Joe Quinn was#we shall see

the reason poolverine is so appealing is also because in all of his two-decade run in the xmcu they have given logan some of the most boring and rushed relationships with women (because it was the 2000s and the mold that they followed for rugged manly protagonists meant an astounding lack of chemistry between them and their love interests in favor of giving them the "dead wife who has a montage at the beginning of the movie" treatment etc etc) and then they put him in a 2 hour long film with a guy even more insane and fucked up than him and they matched each other beat for beat. say what you want about the mcu but they achieved a level of chemistry between logan and wade that fox couldn't reach in 20 years with like four different love interests. which is also a petition for them to either go the gay route or finally let logan find a woman he has good chemistry with and who can pass the bechdel test
#the only who came close to having good chemistry with logan was mariko and i could tell because when i watched the wolverine#and i saw them kiss i didn't have the same visceral disappointment i did whenever jean showed up in her dead wife attire#and like that film is meh but out of all of logan's love interests i liked her the most#she was a good character and they had good interactions#but even then can you even compare that to wade and logan on their film#anyways if you can't tell i am rewatching some stuff with the newly added context of the new movie#logan howlett#xmcu#poolverine#(also this is only about the movies i know nothing about the comics don't come at me)

NATALIE WOOD in WEST SIDE STORY (1961) I never like anybody disparaging anything Natalie did because | think she’s so wonderful in the role and the fact that it ended up not being her [singing] voice, to me made absolutely no difference. - GEORGE CHAKIRIS
#so i guess this is a bone of contention between george and rita hmm [sips tea]#rita is a queen but the fact that she shows ZERO grace towards natalie and her role in the film's legacy is so tacky and rude#i truly think she is convinced she carried that film by herself and that just drives me crackers because it's such a beautiful ensemble#and honestly if you think natalie wasn't good enough as maria go watch her final scene#then go watch rachel zegler in the same scene#there is truly nothing i can say that will speak more eloquently than that#natalie wood#west side story#filmedit#*

John Watson
from the Sherlock Holmes series by Arthur Conan Doyle (1887-1927)
#I did holmes and watson as a pair ages ago but I haven't posted watson himself so here ya go#as with all sherlock holmes polls it's going to depend on the adaptation so vote based on canon if you can#cos I think you could easily make a case for granada watson being gay. whereas others like TPLOSH or ritchie films are more straight#and where to begin with bbc watson. he's always saying he's not gay. but in the same way that irene is gay (both in love with sherlock)#god just thinking about that show gives me psychic damage#john watson#sherlock holmes#arthur conan doyle#acd holmes#acd watson#granada holmes#granada watson#bbc sherlock#johnlock#classic literature#polls#queer#bisexual#new post

Voice actors are NOT the same as actors.
It takes a specific kind of skill-set and training to be able to warp and meld the voice. It takes a certain kind of talent and dedication to hone that talent into the ability to meld the voice and invoke emotion with one's voice alone. Actors are used to using their voice secondarily to their body language and their facial expressions. It's all mirrored back on camera. They do have nuance. But it's a different kind of nuance and a different kind of training to produce that nuance.
Voice actors might get their likeness transposed on their character's design, and maybe their mannerisms might seep into the character's animation. But when it's all said and done: their presence is in their voice. They are bringing a character to life, showing that emotion in their voice, trying to keep a specific accent, drawl, pitch, tone in that voice and keep it consistent for their recording sessions.
The voice actor is like a classically trained musician who can play first chair in a competitive, world-renown orchestra. The actor (who fills the voice actor's role) is like a moot who played violin in beginner and intermediate high school orchestra and thinks they can get into Juilliard with that 2-4 years of experience.
This doesn't mean that the HS orchestra moot can't play. They can even be really good at it. Maybe they won competitions and sat first chair. But they are not in the same league as the person who's been training their whole lives and lives and breathes to hone their craft using the instrument and all of the training they've ever acquired to perfect it. They are not meant for the same roles. They are not in the same caliber. You do not hire the HS equivalent when you want to play complex music in a competitive orchestra.
Actors are not the same as voice actors.
And furthermore, actors - especially big name actors - taking the roles of animated characters for big budget films or TV pilots makes no sense anyways when - at least in the case of TV pilots - there's not a point to hiring a big budget actors anyways. That money could be used elsewhere (like paying your animators), and the talent that is brought onto the screen for X character could then be hired on to voice said character no recasting required.
I wouldn't say voice acting as a profession is in danger exactly, but it's certainly being disrespected and overlooked for celebrity clout, and this has ALWAYS been an issue. Shoot, even Robin Williams knew that much - which is why he tried so hard not to be used as a marketing chess piece for Aladdin and got royally pissed off when it happened anyways. People shouldn't go to any movie (but especially not animated films) because "oh famous actor is in it". People should go because it's a good movie and the voice acting is good.
People who honest to god think that voice actors are replaceable because "oh well anyone can voice act" or "I like xyz celebrity so naturally it'll be good" ... Honestly I just wish you'd reassess your priorities because you're missing the point and are part of the problem.
Voice Actors ≠ Actors.
#(i am incredibly passionate about this)#(and seeing celebrity voice actors in what should be a voice actor's role completely burns my buns it doesn't matter WHO it is)#(hemsworth as optimus? someone tell me one good reason why they couldn't get a good v/a to replace mr. cullen properly for the future)#(ben shwartz as sonic? dude literally isn't even a good voice actor OR actor anyways-)#(- A N D jason griffith AND my boy roger craig smith are still RIGHT HERE)#(jason griffith IN PARTICULAR would have pulled back SO many sonic fans that went to watch the film anyways. if not /more/.)#(and on top of that he has the same tonality and energy they tried to force this moshmo to try and emulate anyways so GET THE REAL THING)#(chris pratt as mario? i can at least defend /him/ and say that barring his failure to do a NY accent consistently he wasn't terrible)#(but mario's new voice actor could've been used instead and people would've clearly appreciated that WAY more)#(vanessa hudgens as sunny starscout in mlp g5's pilot movie? literally why. they replace her and hitch's va in the show.)#(don't even get me started on the concept of hiring celebrity singers to do musical theatre roles or not letting musical theatre singers-)#(-dub the celebrity voice actors you just HAD to hire for your film bc you're so worried about not getting enough clout to get ppl in seats#(that you're putting it all in this (1) big name hire bc turns out that you have no faith in your writing ability much less-)#(-animation as a medium.)#(and no before anyone says anything : no this is not me saying that ALL celebrity voice castings are bad.)#(there are some that aren't that bad and others that are actually pretty good.)#(i especially appreciate it when actors are damn well aware they aren't voice actors and try to LEARN from voice coaches-)#(-and/or their va predecessors if applicable.)#(that does not change the fact that the celebrity shouldn't have been hired just because the film wanted to have bragging clout-)#(-oh look at this FAMOUS PERSON we were able to hire — yeah ok. sure wendy. i want to know if this film is quality or not.)#(and 9/10 times the SECOND there is money spent on a non voice actor to voice the main character especially)#(that usually means somewhere along the way animation IS going to get shafted. if not w the animators themselves then in the way of-)#(-the actual animation itself and ESPECIALLY the screenwriting because it's especially been so dogshit lately even before the strike.)#(a celebrity being hired to fill a voice actor's role is such an immediate red flag to me and it is VERY rare that i get to be proven wrong

"The idea of it..."
This is obviously a reference to the ol' argument:
"The Jedi weren't bad but the Jedi Order as an institution needed to go."
So as a quick reminder I thought I'd point out:
1) George Lucas describes the Jedi's eradication as a sad thing, not something sad-but-necessary:
"[The] Jedi getting killed through the Order 66 of the clones is just done as one of those kind of inevitable pay offs in terms of getting rid of everybody, the Emperor is getting rid of all his enemies, but there’s a certain inevitability of it all and a sadness to it. - Revenge of the Sith, Director’s Commentary, 2005
2) Out of 770 George Lucas quotes, I've never seen him refer to the Jedi Order as "an institution" once.
He does refer to the Republic itself as an institution.
"[In The Phantom Menace one of the many storylines is] the story of a young queen who's faced with the total annihilation of a people, and how she can get a sluggish political institution to pay attention to what's going on." - Premiere, 1999
He might be referring to the Senate instead of the Republic as a whole, but the point stands: he's not talking about the Jedi.
Which tracks with what Lucas defined as Dooku's reason for leaving the Order: his disenchantment with the Republic/Senate, not the Jedi themselves.
But let's go slightly further:
The Jedi Temple was designed as a place of worship that would contrast with the corporate coldness of the Senate.
Also, the Jedi were originally designed as a more organized police force. As the script evolved, they were turned into peacekeepers, diplomats.
Mace's room was redesigned so as to not convey that the Jedi were mired in bureaucracy and protocol.
And when describing the political situation of the Prequels, Lucas doesn't blame the Jedi, but rather the corporations and Senate:
"But as often happens when wealth and power grow beyond all reasonable proportion, an evil fueled by greed arose. The massive organs of commerce mushroomed in power, the Senate became corrupt, and an ambitious named Palpatine was voted Supreme Chancellor." - Shatterpoint, Prologue, 2004
Wow, it's looking like not only is the "Jedi Order as an institution needed to go" narrative not a thing per Lucas, but
3) Lucas went out of his way to make it clear that the Jedi aren't the issue, here, the Republic/Senate is.
So how did we get this narrative?
Well, it comes from a generation of fans and Star Wars creators who were not the target audience.
You know the type. It's the kind who, when asked if they like the Prequel Trilogy, will respond that they liked...
... but not the execution.
AKA they disliked the Prequels, but then EU books and The Clone Wars came out and provided them with enough material to form a headcanon justifying why they didn't like the Jedi, despite wanting to: it's because the Jedi are meant to be disliked! Totally!
The Jedi failed as an institution is an idea that comes from authors who wanted to engage with the material (it IS Star Wars, after all) but not the narrative that George Lucas had crafted, whose work then influenced older fans who preferred the author's retconned version of the story to the original one.
The rest is history.
As Prequels producer Rick McCallum put it:
"The myth begins on paper. During preproduction, filming, and postproduction, the myth becomes visible through the work of hundreds of dedicated people. Following the film's release, the myth becomes public and the public makes it its own." - Rick McCallum, Mythmaking: Behind the Scenes of Attack of the Clones, 2002
#I find it ironic that Filoni unwittingly gave Baylan the same line repeated by 'Prequel fans' who only became fans by...#... injecting gray morality into the films and said “it was there all along! the Prequels are subversive films!”#They're not. They're films for kids. The SITUATION is more complex than in the Original Trilogy... but the morality is still good vs evil.#baylan skoll#ahsoka series#jedi order#george lucas#meta#star wars#ahsoka spoilers#ahsoka show#ahsoka#in defense of the jedi

they had to make Vanessa break up w wade in the film because they'd already kidnapped her and killed her and they couldn't just have her in the film as a person like peter, obviously she could only be there if she was being used to motivate wade somehow
#why could she not just have been a supportive side character like peter#and replace those breakup scenes with her actually having character and personality#and showing how their relationship has grown during the two previous films of building it up#the reason i especially hate it is he already had all the motivation he needed#they established all hes ever wanted is to matter (like an avenger) and then theres the end of the world motivation too#u want to tie vanessa into that make it so he still wants to be better for her#but because he loves her not because she doesnt love him#there you still get all three of the same motivations#without sacrificing a character to an overdone misogynistic trope#when you've already sacrificed that character to overdone misogynistic tropes in both previous films...#deadpool 3#deadpool#deadpool and wolverine#wade Wilson

Pocahontas (1995): 3 times Pocahontas is compared to her mother + 1 time she's recognized on her own merits.
rambling lil meta under the cut
see, what's crazy about this whole situation is that it makes me wonder what exactly pocahontas's mom was like to have left such a massive impression on literally everyone in their community? there's that outright statement that "yeah, your mom's spirit is in the wind, basically, and our people venerate her as a spiritual guide (at the very least)." we know that she's the main connection between pocahontas and grandmother willow, and there's an implication in there that whatever leadership role she held in the village is expected to fall on pocahontas's shoulders someday.
i am so convinced that this role is some kind of spiritual leader/shaman position. wise-woman, priestess, whatever it's called. we don't see anyone else besides kekata performing any kind of spiritual rites, and even he isn't seen acting in direct contact with spiritual entities. kekata has to perform chants, provide offerings, and use a medium. pocahontas can just fuckign. talk to the things. how is she doing that? why isn't anyone else really able to do that? john smith could talk with grandmother willow but would he be able to if pocahontas wasn't there (i actually think he could but that's a different post)? has she ever done that for literally anybody else? nakoma never mentions grandmother willow. nobody mentions grandmother willow. apparently, the only two people who knew about her before pocahontas brought her new bf over was pocahontas and her mom.
i'm losing track of myself here, but the point is pocahontas is Highly aware of the ghost she's expected to live up to. and it sucks. and there's a lot more to her character arc about this but the eventual come-around to accepting that she has a responsibility to be more than herself and more than her mother's ghost is so heartbreaking because it also meant she had to let go of her soulmate at the same time so i c ry
#pocahontasedit#disneyedit#pocahontas (1995)#pocahontas#help i'm hyperanalyzing disney's pocahontas again#<- blog tag for these metas now#queso*edit#i've been thinking about this for literal days#i've beein having a lot of THoughts but am having trouble writing them down lately so bear with me#but pocahontas's resistance to engaging with Anyone until john smith shows up is Fascinating to me#nakoma had to hunt her down to talk to her and got capsized for her trouble#they giggle about it at the time but pocahontas's reluctance to open up to nakoma throughout the film is sooooo oo#this weird semi-deified status her mom has i think fucked pocahontas up a lil#bc it gives her a similar 'unapproachable' quality if she proves to have the same capability#i think she has very Mixed feelings about that and is wary of engaging to closely with others because of it#queso*gif
