Fashion week challenge
This blog is all about fashion week. We were given a challenge by Caitlin to test our time keeping skills. Caitlin sent us videos to watch on YouTube of different fashion weeks . Such as Mosquino and Louis Vuitton. Caitlyn told us to bring a mini kit, and to stay within a 20 - 30 minute time limit. This was to emulate the feeling of working backstage at fashion week. We were also told to pick a designer that we were inspired by. I chose Vivienne Westwood because I have a fondness for the brand and their anti establishment roots. I looked at their Spring and Summer 2012 collection. Which is my favourite show of theirs. The makeup design for that show was done by Val Garland. The makeup she designed had an Autumnal Marie Antoinette inspired aesthetic. The colour she chose for the eyes reminded me of a sunset and worked perfectly with the faded pastel colours in the Collection. So, I decided to recreate the look.

My Attempt at a Vivienne Westward /Val Garland make up
As you can see I stuck pretty close to the original design. Which turned out average. I wish I pushed myself more to be more unique with my take of Vals look. It took me more than 20 minutes to complete this look which If this was actually fashion week would probably land me in hot water for being too slow.
Sometimes I feel like I still buckle under the pressure of a time limit because I'm a perfectionist and I can't help but try to make everything I do look perfect. There are ways of getting around it. You just need to focus on the most important things and get them done and then the small details can come later.
Overall I enjoy any chance I get to recreate a make up designed by Val Garland. I highly doubt that I'd be getting a Ding-Dong off her though.

Turning 2023 makeup trends into one makeup look .
2023 make up trend predictions For today's blog, I will be looking at 2023 trend predictions. Thanks to classmate Suzie, who sent all the class an article about 2023 trend predictions written by Ipsy. I now have some idea of the upcoming trends this year. For those who don't know, Ipsy is a website that sells monthly glam bags. Ipsy scoured the social media of top makeup artists to find different predictions. They also talked to Nick Lujan and Jamie Greenberg, both of them being celebrity makeup artists .

After reading the article and looking at the different predictions they made. I have decided to choose 2 of my favourite looks . I have also found another makeup prediction after scrolling through Instagram. This prediction was made by Dazed magazine. They predicted that dark mermaid/siren makeup would become a craze. One of Ipsy's trend predictions was bold blue eyes. They suggested starting off with mascara because blue is an intimidating colour. If you're not confident wearing such a bold colour then blue mascara is a subtle and easy way to embrace the trend. The more confident you feel, the more eye shadow you can add. I chose this trend because I feel like it works well with the other trends i ended up choosing .

Makeup by Gabriel Almodovar Figure 3
The Glazed forehead highlight is an eye-catching glowing look. Glazed skin fits perfectly with all the other dewy skin trends like glass skin & cloud skin . It's the complete opposite of the overly dry matte foundation of the 2010s.

This is the dark mermaid/siren makeup look Dazed used to on their Instagram and in their prediction. Figure 5 All 3 of these looks work together to create this wet mermaid appearance. In this video, you can see the end results of me combining these free looks. I feel like the blue eyes and the glazed skin compliment each other. I look like a mermaid who's just come out of the ocean. To commit to the look, I wet my hair and put on a sparkly blue top to elevate the look. I think this look fits well with the fun and experimental looks people have been doing ever since the 1st lock down in 2020. I feel like beauty and makeup trends are going to keep going down this exuberant and bold style people have been drawn to the past few years.
When doing the research and creating this look on myself, I realised that beauty is steering away from this heavily contoured, picture-perfect Instagram look. While contemporary beauty trends are becoming more fun, expressive, artistic & imperfect. Which reflects the values of the younger generation. From what I've seen, they appreciate authenticity, uniqueness, and creativity. I feel like their values are something that any trendsetters and innovators need to take into consideration.

A full face of makeup using my favourite products 💄💋
When it comes to my personal makeup, I tend to lean towards a clean, glowy look. Usually, my makeup has a retro flair. My makeup style can change from day to day depending on what I'm inspired by. Early 90s grunge is one of the styles I'm attracted to.
I usually start my makeup by applying skincare. I tend to lay on moisturisers and serums to achieve a glossy skin effect. L'Oreal Revitalift serum is one of the products I like using to achieve this.
Brows are usually next. When I first started wearing makeup I would always fill in my brows with a pencil, powder or pomade but now I tend to just use a brow gel Sometimes even just a light powder to fill in any gaps.
M.A.C face & body is literally my favourite foundation, especially on days where I just want to look put together and not overdone . It's lightweight buildableand dries down So you don't leave make up marks on your clothes.
I recently discovered a brand, Uoma beauty. I saw it in Harvey Nichols. My friend from college was the manager . It's a very new brand and one of my favourite things about it is it's also a Black own brand. In the video, you can see that I'm using their Woke concealer in Bronze Venus. The concealer was highly pigmented and had a lovely warm undertone, which warmed up my under eyes. Another black own brand I used was Juvia's place.
For years, I've been trying to get my hands on their products. I was able to get my hands on some of their products last year. They've started selling their cosmetics in Superdrug. Which is great for someone like me he prefers to go into a brick and mortar store to buy makeup. Their Bronzer in the shade medium was the 1st matte bronzer that actually worked on my skin tone. At Superdrug, Juvia's places shade range was way more inclusive than the other drugstore brands. From what I remember, there were at least 2 to 3 more darker shades that could easily be used by POC with darker skin.
To define my face more, I like to highlight the high points of my cheeks and apply a blush over the bronze ear to give a more realistic sunkissed look. I can guarantee that Wet n Wild does the best drugstore highlighter. It's buttery smooth and glides on the skin beautifully.
For my eyes, I use a combination of Haus labs Glam attack in the shade legendary and Juvia's place Rebel army eyeshadow pallet. I'm using the 1st launch of Glam Attack Liquid eye shadows from Lady Gaga's cosmetics line, Haus Labs. Both products are highly pigmented and easy to apply. I love the combination of golden green.
For the final touches, I set my face using a combination of Mabeline's long-lasting fix powder and the long-lasting fix spray. Finally, I applied a lipstick by M.A.C. in the shade, Mher. I also use Rimmle Scandaleyes mascara and a brown lip gloss.
As you can see on the days where I wear makeup, I like to wear a full face. I don't feel complete without all these steps. Even though the eyes were dramatic, I felt like I was able to balance out the look by keeping the skin and the brows natural. For most people, this may be too much for an everyday look, but I love to experiment with colour, and my eye shadow is how I play around with colour. I treat makeup like fashion. There are different trends, aesthetics & sub cultures. Make-up allows you to signal to others your personal style, your mood, and even your culture.

A few images of my everyday makeup. Here you can see that the lips , brows , and base are the same but the eyes are always different. I consider this to be my daily war paint 🎨 💋💄

The opposite hand make-up challenge 😮‍💨
Industry context
Welcome to the 1st official post on this blog. 🎊🎉
Just some quick info before we start. From today I will be posting weekly about the work I do in my Industry context sessions in university.
A brief summary of the Industry context sessions
A week before each session a person in the class will be given a task to find an article relating to make-up and or the beauty industry. They will share this article to the rest of the class before session. We will then have a group discussion about the article. Now we’ve finished talking about the boring stuff let's get into the nitty-gritty.
The one who was given the task of finding an article this week was Tracy.  Instead of an article Tracy set us a challenge.  A challenge which would slowly drive me insane. This challenge was inspired by Nikkie de Jager-Drossaers . A Dutch make-up artist and social media influencer. With a popular YouTube channel Nikkie Tutorials .
Tracy was inspired by a challenge that Nikkie had done in one of her YouTube videos. The challenge was to only use your opposite or less dominant hand to apply a full face of makeup to your face. Which you’d think would be easy right, but no.🙄
This challenge was harder than I thought. Trying to apply make-up with your less dominant hand in this case it was my left hand physically hurt. My wrist literally felt like it was being stabbed by tiny pins .  For some reason my eyes hurt trying to look into the mirror, especially when I was applying my brows with my left hand.  Applying blush felt completely foreign to me using my left hand. I ended up looking like Crusty the clown.  I almost raged quit multiple times during this challenge it wasn't funny.  The cherry on top of this eaten mess was the eyeliner. It looked like a weird Nike swoosh. I ended up looking like a Picasso painting. If I could sum up my feelings for this challenge in a movie quote it would be. "She's a full-on Monet. It's like a painting see ? From far away, it's OK, but up close it's a big old mess".
I am a perfectionist when it comes to applying make-up on myself and I can take at least 2 hours on my own face. Regardless I would suggest everyone should try this challenge at least once . No matter how frustrating it is.
You can check out the Tik Tok at the top of this post just to see my face and how irritated I look. 😡
If any of you want to try this challenge for yourself feel free to PM me the results and maybe we could all have a collective laugh at ourselves.
That's all for today I will see you in the next post have fun scrolling ;)

Who is Elyse Mooney ? How kind of you to ask . Well to begin with I'm a 28 years old post graduate student studying Creative makeup BA (Hons) at Hugh Baird college. Yes that means I'm technically a Millennial but I consider myself a Zillennial (someone born between 1993 & 1998) . I'm a Gemini Sun, Aries moon and Scorpio rising. So all you astrological girlies will know that I'm a chatty charismatic passionate person. Who loves to talk about and think about things on a deeper level. I'm a unabashed Disney adult , I love Halloween 🎃. I'm also a spooky girl, who loves cheesy slasher movies and chick flicks . For the last 9 years of my life I've been studying and working in make-up. I'm also a fashion history nerd . I'm in love with clothes from the 18th 19th and 20th century . Especially the 1920s 70s 80s & 90s. Lets not forget Y2K fashion, considering it was my childhood. Oh, how could I forget I'm also a little bit of a gaming nerd. I prefer RPG's (role playing games ) and choose your own adventure games. Two of my favourite franchises have to be Mass Effect & Life is Strange but I also love the classics like Pokémon Mario Sonic etcetera. One important thing you need to know about me is, I see the world through a neuro-divergent, queer lens. For anyone who wants to know I use she/her pronouns. Now you know a little bit about me, I hope you stay around to help me investigate the beauty industry and sniff out all it's secrets. Feel free to ask me any questions and have fun scrolling ;) .
