Teach your Children, to Follow their Joy
Tumblr media
Oh. Did someone call for a Lois Lane/Hot-For-Teacher over here? The script for this series certainly does. Today’s work entails me being a sassy stenographer named Macy.
And, as I slid on her glasses, I recalled how much I loved playing dress up as a child. How much I STILL love dressing up. And, how deliciously lucky I am to be able to do it almost daily in a variety of incarnations.
Parents, trust where your children’s joy lies. That’s the joy they will drive from - and, thrive on - for the rest of their lives. Even if it’s not where you find your joy. Or, if it makes you nervous... Or, if it makes you uncomfortable... Or, if it even scares you to death... You can’t change a person’s joy reservoir. So, take notice of what river they go to draw from. Help them fill it up as much as you can when they are young. And, then teach them to seek it when they need it most. That’s where their joy will be found long after their youth is gone.

Fill It Up
You may think today’s blog is about the rising gas pricing across the country! 😊  It is not, I am happy to say.  It is about what we do to fill ourselves up.  We’ve shared on her many times, thoughts about happiness, joy, and fulfillment. A couple months ago I was remined again about how happiness, however often we choose it, and we should choose it all the time, can be short lived.  It was this quote by Matthew McConaughey that got me thinking about it again.
“Happiness is an emotional response to some result. Joy is a constant; create outcomes that fill us up.”
Let’s break the happiness part down first. Having a great meal at one our favorites restaurants will certainly make me happy.  Happiness presents itself while I am in the moment and may stick with me for a day after, but then it is gone by the time I am eating lunch the next day! However, same type of situation, what about when I am having that meal with my wife, daughters, family members and great friends? That could bring me joy that can last.  The memories of those conversations and that time sitting there, enjoying a great meal together, laughing, sharing, engaged, connecting! Yes, there will be other thoughts that come into my mind in the days and weeks to come.  However, it is very likely I won’t remember that meal down the road, but I will certainly remember the people and the connection we had.
We can take that a little further too.  I like to ask folks when speaking or when they are guests on the podcast, “what makes you come alive?”  Nine times out of ten when I ask this the answer comes back in some form or another, to being with people.  Folks enjoy that connection, being around loved ones, family, and friends, talking sharing, engaging with one another.  We, as human beings, want to connect and belong and what better way of doing so than being around those we really enjoy being around.  We fill each other up and when we do, it creates joy and fulfillment.  That fulfillment stays with us and those memories may last a lifetime.  The awesome steak, well that is going to come and go!
There are certainly things we can do alone but going on this journey with others makes it so much more satisfying.  Why go it alone when we have others to walk arm and arm with?  Having moments and memories to share can bring a lifetime of joy.  It doesn’t have to be big or extravagant. It can simple be a walk, a cup of coffee, or a phone call.  These moments create outcomes that will fill us up because of those we choose to experience them with.
The great thing is, we can choose BOTH happiness and joy!

#Fandestools, we are really at the business end of the sausage now! I am writing this on a Saturday evening, which is often a bit of a quiet time for me, since my celebrity friends are all doing gigs, or delicately removing the carbs from their finger foods at a swanky gala somewhere. And if you’re reading this, I know that your Saturday evening is a bit quiet too, but probably because your whole life is empty and dull. Don’t feel bad. The solution to that is to come to my Sydney Comedy Festival show at Giant Dwarf! Do it! Book now.
