Anino (2000)
“A picture is worth a thousand words”                                             -Fred R. Barnard
A Filipino short film directed by Raymond Red.
From the famous quote, a mere image and it’s complexity adds up thousands of opinions, inspiration, and ideas. Creative thinking or whatever you’d call it.
Raymond Red a director who created many hidden and deep meaning films that awed many viewers in its simplest form. Director Red won many awards and certificates nationally and internationally that no other Filipino directors had. Because of his experience and experiments while on becoming the renowned directors by making short films while he is inspiring many young generations to show to the new modernization of this generation.
From the film, a country heavy on poverty day and night chooses a man from an unknown place whilst holding a camera all around Manila to capture the smiles and beauty of a ruined world hoping someone would see the grace even if it’s just a single frame and hire him to find the beauty of this gray world.
The old man wanted to uplift the hidden hope that nobody else sees with his camera, but was later taken. And was stumbled onto a fight in the street with a man and his expensive car. There’s a deep meaning to that.
Anino from its English translation ‘shadow’ as seen in the film the old man handled many different occurrences that somewhat made him put his life on the line because of some tragedy. Shadows can also be a reference to negativity as we can see from the film. Many circumstances that almost hit the frail old man to his knees, showing the insanity of the modern reality we live in.
The camera was like a hope for the old man living in this roundabout, destructed, societal hierarchy, damned world that everyone meets to your standards but if you were to be colorfully glowing differently they will try to dismantle your glow and put it aside like a nobody you thought you once were., therefore saying that you don’t like this world and succumbing into darkness and now welcome yourself to the side of helplessness.
Imagine, you, pursuing your greatest talent and dream to become the best of the best that anyone is willing to hire you for your skill. But in fact, reality bends your motivation and will to carry on your sole duty of passion to achieve your loved career. And no one would bother wasting a minute of their life to hear your simple plead and will later on flee from your unjust image, then later on tarnish you and take your hopes and dreams from you all with a hierarchical status that this world gave you, that the people bestowed upon you who is innocently, vague ,and anew.
This film has given me sadness and a slap at the face altogether with everything back and forth. Simply watching this great film and understanding everything that happens in the setting can give your sanity at its peak. For an aspiring artist who’s yet to compete in the real world, this gave me tremors of pressure haunting your career and passion, trying to stop you from your tracks.
When all falls down and hope is lost and no one to hold onto, ‘thing’ becomes a trip to sanity and you be attached to items making the memory last forever but one single swoop amidst the troubles and suffering that little tome of hope becomes disarray and tumbles to the point of breaking down where nothing but yourself is all you have in this forsaken world.
All I can say is hands down to this simple, yet spectacular film.

BETCIN
The #BetCinFinale was a cliffhanger! Season two, please! Make it 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and more? Add more characters. Prolly the #LWORD and #LWORDGenerationQ of the Philippines?! Y NOT! I'm not saying we imitate them, but this is an eye-opener regarding the Filipino film industry and understanding the impact of stigma and discrimination against the #lgbtq+ community.
Break that stereotyping of who's the "boy" in the relationship. Maybe they meant who the alpha is? Regardless, we, too, go through the same hardships and heartbreaks as heterosexuals. HELLO DIRECTOR and PRODUCERS! Yoo-hoo!

🎥 Time for some ReelView:Bloody Crayons Directed by: Topel Lee ✴Bloody Crayons is a 2017 Star Cinema suspense-thriller film directed by Topel Lee. This film is an adaptation of the Wattpad book “Bloody Crayons”. ✴A group of graduating students goes to an island for a short film project when they are rattled by a mysterious killer who strives to kill all of them. ▶The synopsis says it all. Well, except the identity of the killer. But with such a simple and unpretentious story line, it wasn’t difficult to enjoy the film. ▶The direction built was straight and clear. Along that road are nine characters (less after some got killed) which we got to know even if it was just for a short while. When they started playing the Bloody Crayons game, there was a brief harmony among the characters. ▶BUT… that same moment also marks the turning point and emergence of each personality’s darker shade. The deception and confusion led to an even more interesting and gruesome series of events. My Amanda (2021)
Tumblr media
As My Amanda began, I thought “here we go again”. By the end, I was getting a little teary-eyed. This movie isn't what you expect. It's a strong directorial debut by Alessandra de Rossi, who also writes, and stars in a romantic drama that’s often funny and quite touching.
Friends TJ “Fuffy” (Piolo Pascual) and Amanda “Fream” (Alessandra de Rossi) are so close they’re often confused for a couple. Whenever they both happen to be single at the same time, someone always asks why they don’t get together. Their love isn’t that kind of love.
Whenever I see a movie that has a man and a woman as “just friends”, I expect them to be anything but by the time the credits roll. This movie shows all the signs of being a cliché-filled rom-com. He’s a womanizer who’s never been able to settle down. She’s engaged to a man he doesn’t like and who’s no good for her. Even grandma thinks they should be together. How long before he’s chasing her on the way to the airport? My Amanda is not that kind of movie but in a way, it’s kind of nice that it appears to be at first. de Rossi and Pascual have excellent chemistry. Even when they’re telling each other how vomit-inducing a couple they would be, you can’t help yourself from wondering “are you sure?” When they go out for drinks and get so tipsy they both wind up lying on the same bed you think “This is the moment, isn’t it?”. It isn’t. They wake up the next day, she’ll be mortified thinking something happened and then HAHA! he takes off the blankets to show all of his clothes are still on - socks and all.
If the movie isn’t about them getting together… what happens? Well, life happens. Fuffy and Fream converse honestly about what the future, their concerns, her fiancé, their families, his pet hamster, what other people think about them, whether they’ll get to beat that bar challenge one day, etc. Seeing this friendship turns you into a ball of soft, emotional dough. When tragedy strikes, it’s happening to you. When they laugh, you laugh along with them. It makes you yearn for that friend you had that one summer long ago. Remember the one? You met them suddenly and for a little while, you were inseparable. It’s like you had been waiting for that other person your entire life but after that week, the intensity was gone, and inevitably, you drifted apart. Now you can’t even remember their name. What if that friendship kept going, became even deeper with each passing year? If it did, it would be like the one in My Amanda.
Although My Amanda tells you what it is, it keeps you guessing. You always wonder if it might not be that kind of story after all. Maybe you kind of want it to be that kind of story, even if you earlier, you hoped it wouldn't be. In a way, its ending might be a bit too emotional but I’m not going to hold it against the film. I liked it too much to do that. (Original Tagalog with English subtitles, July 29, 2021)

When women experience bodily changes – from their first menstruation to menopause, hormonal changes resulting in emotional instances take place. For some, it is a nerve-racking experience, some would manage it with confidence, while others may still try to adjust to these changes. Jen J. Balberona's Black Sky is a reminder that the female body is in constant transition. The surge of emotions is normal and needs to be embraced. However, these changes are not easy to accept. Balberona expresses it through this film. Ahead of its time, Biyaya ng Lupa (1959) is proven to be the gem of Philippine cinema.
Manuel Silos’ 1959 Biyaya ng Lupa or Blessings of the Land is a heartwarming yet thrilling film that follows the story of a Filipino family-- wait, no--- of a Filipino community in the late 50s.
Tumblr media
Starred by Tony Santos (as Jose), Rosa Rosal (as Maria), and Leroy Salvador (Miguel), Carlos Padilla Jr. (Arturo), Marita Zobel (Angelita), and Danilo Jurado (Lito) as their children, there is just so much to love about this film. Its genius editing and sound design, generous acting and splendid cinematography but most of all, its singularly powerful and beautiful story.
Without giving too much away, because I genuinely recommend that you go watch it, Biyaya ng Lupa tells the story of Jose and Maria’s good and bountiful life with their four children. They live peacefully in the barrio of Santa Monica until they get dragged in the animosity of Bruno (who was played by Joseph de Cordova) where the reason for his hostility is one that has transpired in unexpected means.
Full of Filipino values and culture, the film has brought my feet back on the ground of my native land. Much of the culture before is still present now but occasionally forgotten. Love for the family, adherence to religion, hardwork and resilliency, and of course bayanihan wherein the community works together for a goal or a certain purpose, all these values and traits are slowly being replaced by much of the mainstream culture or values.
Another reason as to why I love the film is that not only is the characters driven by FIlipino traits but it is also what saves them (bayanihan). Its as if Silos knew that it is what would save us too (for example, the emergence of community pantries in the middle of the pandemic).
Honestly, seeing this film for the first time has been highly refreshing because Hollywood and Korean films have taken over the eyes and even hearts of many Filipinos.
If we could just come together, perhaps we’d appreciate our history and country more. Then maybe, Philippine cinema would take over the world too.

Before That Thing Called Tadhana, writer and director Antoinette Jadaone gave us Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay. The mockumentary is a finalist at the 2011 Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival where it won six awards including Best Actress for Lilia Cuntapay, a professional extra and dubbed as the “Queen of Philippine Horror Movies”. No surprise there as the film uniquely and successfully showed the truths about the life of an extra and life itself without being overly dramatic. Not only that, but Lilia Cuntapay proved she can be in the lead too. She has a sense of humor and a charm that makes you want to listen and see what she’ll say and do next. Four Sisters Before the Wedding (2020)
Tumblr media
Haven’t seen the 2013 Filipino movie Four Sisters and a Wedding? That’s ok. You can start with its 2020 prequel, Four Sisters Before the Wedding. Its dramatic scenes overcome cultural boundaries. The comedy… sometimes does as well. It’s nice, breezy fun.
Sisters Alexandra “Alex” Salazar (Gillian Vicencio), Theodora “Teddie” (Charlie Dizon), Roberta “Bobbie” (Alexa Ilacad), and Gabriella “Gabbie” are ordinary teenagers with ordinary troubles. While working hard to earn the grades their parents expect and crushing on boys they’re not allowed to date until they’ve graduated from school they begin suspecting their father (Dominic Ochoa) is having an affair.
In a foreign movie, I want a taste of something different. I don’t want to see another country merely emulating what Hollywood does; I want to see customs and culture weave a new story or make an old story feel new. You get a fair amount of this in Four Sisters Before the Wedding. The sisters are ordinary sisters in every way. They tease each other about which boy they think about, argue about who is borrowing who’s shoes, worry about who their parents like best, etc. There are also some parts of this story that are definitely Filipino. The family’s financial situation, for example. Bobbie is being offered a prestigious scholarship in New York. Can her parents afford to pay for her lodgings in America? The girls can’t even reliably count on their phones having minutes left. The parents could ask Grandma but this stress is probably the reason why dad strayed - assuming he did. If you have family members who’ve had to work abroad and send money back home, you’ll recognize yourself in these characters. Even if you don’t, the dynamics between the actresses are excellent. You get to know them well as individuals, which makes their little romantic adventures sweet and satisfying.
Less successful - or perhaps palatable to foreign audiences - are the comedic scenes. Comedienne Kakai Bautista plays a private investigator that drove me up the wall. Her schemes to get the truth revealed are just too dumb, even in this kind of movie. There’s also a horrible lesbian stereotype played by Cai Cortez. The P.I. is necessary for the plot and ads some welcome comedic hijinks to balance the drama but a little of her goes a long way and Toti Marie you could’ve eliminated… if she didn’t appear in the “sequel”.
Although Four Sisters Before the Wedding” (a title whose meaning becomes clear during the last act of the film, a surprisingly mature and heartfelt conclusion) is kind of Little Women -lite. It also has a bit of a something-something that I could see you latching onto. I’m excited to see what’s next so I imagine anyone who’s seen the “original” will be pleased to get more out of this charming family and the people who surround them. (Original Tagalog with English Subtitles, December 29, 2020)
