My Amanda (2021)

As My Amanda began, I thought “here we go again”. By the end, I was getting a little teary-eyed. This movie isn't what you expect. It's a strong directorial debut by Alessandra de Rossi, who also writes, and stars in a romantic drama that’s often funny and quite touching.

Friends TJ “Fuffy” (Piolo Pascual) and Amanda “Fream” (Alessandra de Rossi) are so close they’re often confused for a couple. Whenever they both happen to be single at the same time, someone always asks why they don’t get together. Their love isn’t that kind of love.

Whenever I see a movie that has a man and a woman as “just friends”, I expect them to be anything but by the time the credits roll. This movie shows all the signs of being a cliché-filled rom-com. He’s a womanizer who’s never been able to settle down. She’s engaged to a man he doesn’t like and who’s no good for her. Even grandma thinks they should be together. How long before he’s chasing her on the way to the airport? My Amanda is not that kind of movie but in a way, it’s kind of nice that it appears to be at first. de Rossi and Pascual have excellent chemistry. Even when they’re telling each other how vomit-inducing a couple they would be, you can’t help yourself from wondering “are you sure?” When they go out for drinks and get so tipsy they both wind up lying on the same bed you think “This is the moment, isn’t it?”. It isn’t. They wake up the next day, she’ll be mortified thinking something happened and then HAHA! he takes off the blankets to show all of his clothes are still on - socks and all.

If the movie isn’t about them getting together… what happens? Well, life happens. Fuffy and Fream converse honestly about what the future, their concerns, her fiancé, their families, his pet hamster, what other people think about them, whether they’ll get to beat that bar challenge one day, etc. Seeing this friendship turns you into a ball of soft, emotional dough. When tragedy strikes, it’s happening to you. When they laugh, you laugh along with them. It makes you yearn for that friend you had that one summer long ago. Remember the one? You met them suddenly and for a little while, you were inseparable. It’s like you had been waiting for that other person your entire life but after that week, the intensity was gone, and inevitably, you drifted apart. Now you can’t even remember their name. What if that friendship kept going, became even deeper with each passing year? If it did, it would be like the one in My Amanda.

Although My Amanda tells you what it is, it keeps you guessing. You always wonder if it might not be that kind of story after all. Maybe you kind of want it to be that kind of story, even if you earlier, you hoped it wouldn't be. In a way, its ending might be a bit too emotional but I’m not going to hold it against the film. #MyAmanda. Been the talk of the town for the past few days. Now I understand why. Have a lot of feelings about this one so let's have the spoiler-free review first. My Amanda is a wonderful heart-warming story about Fuff (Piolo Pascual) and Fream (Alessandra De Rossi) who've been through ups and downs, and relationships and breakups. It's the kind of friendship many aspire to have. Unfiltered, relentless, no holds barred, fun, true, and just plain real. Three things I loved most about this film: Script and storytelling. Mad props to @msderossi for this beautifully written masterpiece. What a story to debut with both as a writer and a director. It's unfiltered, it is how best friends are. The crass conversations, random musings about life, the real talk, the feelings. They're all very reflective of real life that I even see myself in those convos. But what surprised me was the credits. The letters being read throughout the film resonated with me because they were heartfelt. The kind of letters you'd be writing when you're lost in thought or just writing your heart out. Guess what, those letters were done by Ebe Dancel. Need I say more? Ebe. Dancel. That's it. Thank you, Sir Ebe. Thank you, Sir @ebedancel. Cinematography, art direction, and editing. Apart from the story and script, it's the aesthetic and visuals of the film that's really captivating. Crossfades, overlays, even the simple special effects, this is the kind of visual treatment that I've become so used to seeing on fan-made videos, but never locally and at this level of execution. What's also nice about the visual aspect is it's perfectly complemented by a solid musical score and evolving color grades to reflect different emotions or points in time. Through The Fire. I never really listened to the lyrics and fully understood what the song meant until now. To me, it was just a great and powerful song to sing along to whether it's by Chaka Khan or Nina. My Amanda made it more meaningful and the next time this plays, I'll probably listen more intently. Overall, My Amanda is a good film. It isn't pretentious, preachy or tries too hard. Lam niyo buti na lang pinanood ko pa rin 'tong movie na 'to kahit na sabi ng mga Kakosa ko e 'sakto' lang siya nu'ng tinanong ko kung kamusta iyong movie. TBH, tinamad na ako panoorin nu'ng sinabi ng mga bakla na sakto lang pero buti na lang fan ako talaga si Ate Alessandra kaya nilaban ko pa rin tapusin ay dzaiiii iyak ako huhuhuhu. Iba ang atake mga lodicakes.

Iba mag narrate si Papa P nakakainis. Madadala ka, maiimagine mo, ang linaw linaw, ang ganda ganda ng boses. Napakaganda nu'ng sulat na gawa ni Master Ebe Dancel! Ang galing galing nila umarte. Nakaka LSS tuloy ang Through The Fire hahaha! And even through the years, iba pa rin si Papa P. Papa P is Papa P talaga. Hahangarin mo pa rin talaga over and over. Parehas sila ni Ate Alessandra na alam ang assignment. Iyong character na kailangan iportray, nadedeliver nila ng super believable hikhikhik.

Team My Amanda! Directorial debut pa pala 'to ni Ate Alessandra so 'di ba, artista na direktor pa, producer pa pak go girl!!!!! Ganyan! Though very common na iyong boy and a girl friendship formula, pumatok pa rin 'to sa puso ko kasi ganda ng cinematography pati editing lalo na sa huli. Pati mga kanta.Congrats

Hindi 'sakto' ang pelikulang 'to. Maganda siya. May puso. May realizations. May lesson. At mahina ang kaluluwa ko sa mga pelikulang may puso kaya humihikbi ako hanggang matapos iyong movie. Huhuhu.

Siguro kasi at one point lahat tayo makakarelate either sa character ni Piolo o ni Ate Alessandra. Hakhakhakhak

So kung wala ka ginagawa ngayon, panoorin mo na hey hey hey.

PS. Assistant Director iyong schoolmate ko Hector Barretto Calma huy nakakaproud!!!!!! Habang umaakting si Ate Alessandra syempre ikaw ang humahaliling direktor lovette hakhakhak. Ang husay ng pagkakagawa kaya shet!!!! Monsay represent!!!!!!!
