i find it fascinating that the term filipino exists primarily because of the mestizo class, these people who are both native and not, belonging and unbelonging. where a "pure blooded" filipino would once declare themselves as kapampangan or ilokano or bikolano, the mestizo may also use these terms with a caveat that in their lineage is someone who did not belong to a physical locale. so instead, they say "filipino, i was born on these islands, i speak its languages, and it is my home." cant really tell you where home is. its around these parts, its where i make it home.
i believe it is that tension that makes us filipinos, that national identiity which sought out common outcasts and found strength in their differences- i mean, that kind of solidarity today would be enough to topple an empire.
#i used to hate being mestizo but yk what#its what makes me filipino#i wouldnt have it any other way

Of all his names, Jing Yuan still likes Kieng Goan the most.
He is quick to give his reasons, when pressed. It connects him to the homeland he’s never seen. It connects him to the other half of his ancestry. Et cetera. But what he will not ever admit is this: that because of the nature of his societal circle, he has not heard this name in a long time, and that the first time Fu Xuan spoke it into remembered existence he had felt the years shiver away into memory, and something new under his skin, something he has always had but only forgotten for the moment.
And she persists in using this name—half due to her natural inclination for their mother tongue of Hokkien, and half because she thinks his Spanish name of Eugenio Quieng silly, and she is a woman of iron spine who will not be moved if she does not wish it.
His preference for this name, Jing Yuan recites to himself, is only a matter of shared culture. But when he opens her letter, her script spidery beyond legibility, he cannot deny the warmth that spreads through his chest, like honey seeping into bread.
Kieng Goan, she writes, come back sooner, for in your absence the fools have converged upon me. They have sensed the loss of the greatest fool of them all and now vie for your crown. (You are whom I speak of, in case it is unclear, which considering the sad state of your mental facilities I am certain it is.) One of the wretches, a mestizo español, tried to gain my favor by promising me his Spanish surname. Domestic bliss for me, he said, and my trading business for he. They tax our people quite unfairly, as you well know, but I suffered no temptation. Firstly, because he is a champion fool, second to none but you. And secondly, because he wishes to bind me to the ignominious fate of the household. As if I would ever give up sole proprietorship for the sake of one such as him. Of course, there was naught to be done but have Mimi chase him out.
Jing Yuan laughs out loud, uncaring of the sideways looks he draws.
Another tried to get to me via his sister. Paid me a visit just the other day, a Luciana Ochangco. She is pleasant enough, I suppose, but she will talk of nothing but her own troubles, Fu Xuan continues, and with each blot of ink Jing Yuan can see the scowl on her face as she presses the pen harder than is necessary. With the amount of times she has complained about her cochero, I almost wish she would go and take the reins of the quilez herself. With enough luck she will drive herself off the Puenta de España and straight into the River Pasig.
There is more to the letter but it is mostly about Fu Xuan’s burgeoning business, the apple of her eye. She tells him, with visibly restrained excitement, of new clients, new connections, new suppliers. She is eager to look into the untapped market of some new textile from Leyte, she cannot wait to surpass her new business rivals.
By the time he has reached her signature—a perfunctory Yours, Hu Ge—Jing Yuan’s cheeks ache from the force of his smile.
He takes his sheet of paper (used, of course, because the postage alone will eat up more of his meager stipend) and smoothes it out. And then he begins.
Dearest A’ge, he writes, I see you and Mimi have come to a ceasefire at last, if only so that you may join forces to terrorize your poor admirers...

GENSHIN MEN courting you.
WARNING: This is a Filipino AU set in the Spanish Colonization period, so basically all of these are inspired by Filipino courting rituals.
Contains Diluc, Kaeya, Neuvilette, and Wriothesley (some of these men are hand picked because of the languages on the banner on top tehee.), fem!reader, age gap.
Diluc Ragnvindr (Manileño)
Being the son of a businessman, he was the highest regarded bachelor in all of Manila being that he was also rather good looking.
This man is not a big fan of romanticism and would often avoid it like the plague but his guilty pleasure was to read books in the romantic genre hidden away in the depths of his library, his trips to the book store was more often than usual and many thought that he's gone book crazy but that was not the case however.
You.
You were the reason that he's now the book shop's loyal patron, you were just a simple woman from another business oriented family. You were the typical Maria Clara to the spectators eyes, quiet and modest though that was not Diluc saw.
You were ambitious and rather messy at times but that's what he loved about you, your comfortability with someone like him made him feel that he actually was able to make friends of his own that his father had not told him to befriend for the sake of business.
That's when he started to grow feelings for you.
He was still stoic and expressionless at times but whenever he sees you, his ears visibly go red under his luscious red locks.
With the encouragement of his mother and the head maid of his estate, he mustered up the bravery in his entire blood line to go to your home with the intent of asking for your father's blessing to court you.
He was shocked to see that there were other men who were after you; from a Mestizo to a Sangley, they were all there waiting for your sweet yes.
But he had an advantage that didn't have; they didn't know you the way he did.
It started from flowers to love letters, he did everything that he learnt from the romance books he had read and basically copied every single gentleman in the books that women loved.
His very next move was to bring you by the lake that he had remembered that you used to go to as a little girl, it was a bit muddy though, ruining yours and his shoes but it didn't matter as he saw that you were obviously over the moon to see a childhood place again still intact.
He saw something that your other suitors weren't able to see nor willing to, they painted you as this innocent flower that needed corruption from them but to him— you were the most adventurous and the bravest girl he's ever seen.
"Yes." You laughed.
He raised a brow, "Yes what, binibini?" he asked.
"I want to be yours..."
Those very words made his heart race as if he just ran from his house to the nearest farm in the concrete city of Manila, he couldn't believe that his awkward attempts to act out the romanticism of men in books that women seem to love had worked.
"You're pulling on my leg..." He breathed out only to be wronged by her shaking her head.
And just like that, he ran to you and lifted you into the air. The adrenaline causing the two of you to fall into the mud, it was sticky and wet but it didn't matter to him even if his ivory white blouse that his maids spent hours on to perfect was ruined because his heart was now owned by the most perfect woman he could ever think of.
"So... what should we call each other?" He asked.
Kaeya Alberich (Español)
Ever since he has set foot in the Philippines with his father who governed the Philippines in the reign of the Spaniards he has never felt the sense of nervousness, back in Madrid, he had an image to uphold as a government official's son but now he can just let loose.
His move to the Philippines was the very start of his rebellion, he now probably felt like a normal boy like he dreamt of back in Spain but his father wasn't having it.
So to set him straight, he put Kaeya in the supervision of a prayle.
The first mass where he served as the priest's assistant he managed to oversee the entire service from the elevated stage where statues of saints and Jesus were all shown in the altar made of wood and gold. One of them was you, a really pretty Filipina who was praying religiously and singing alongside the child choir.
After the mass, he was about to gather his friend of rebellious teens until he was stopped and called upon the priest he's under.
He mustered up his most innocent boy smile until he saw you approaching, turns out that you were the goddaughter of the priest and he wanted Kaeya and her to be friends since she was the best candidate of friends that could place a good influence on him.
He was beyond bored, accompanying you and other nuns and worshippers as you all prayed to the virgin Mary. There he realized that convincing you to join him to the dark side was a hard task to do, you weren't that innocent but you were the most pure and truest girl he's ever met.
Sometimes you were sassy and very witty but he felt as if you really cared for him despite just being friends with Kaeya so that his father won't worry about him while he's away, with you he learned a lot of things, mainly that he didn't need to rebel to be free.
Most of the things he did was disobeying his father but it didn't do him any good at all, with his friends he learned to become a womanizer and to drink at a very young age. But it was weird to admit that you managed to fix him.
From table manners to memorising the entire prayers in the book in Latin, he learned it all from you. You were the only friend that his father approved of however, despite being a girl and potentially seeing his son in a romantic way not that he minded having you as a daughter in law.
Kaeya soon blossomed feelings for you, it started from helping around the church like you did and almost took your job from you.
He was still cheeky as ever, his teenager instincts causing him to want to create discord but you manage to dim it down with a simple glance.
Everyone loved your pairing, almost every single one encouraged you and Kaeya to start dating already and with the blessing of his father and your father, he began to do the cheesiest things.
You were confused if whether he was doing this to sway you or just flat out piss you off.
One night, you were sleeping peacefully until you heard something from the open window of your room. Groggily heading your way there you saw Kaeya and his goons of friends who some you recognized to be the sons of the farmers in your father's hacienda.
"This is for you, cariño..." Kaeya and his poor ability to sway women with his voice began to sing you a popular Spanish love song, he was hurting your ears but it amused you.
You stayed by the window sill and watched as he sang while his friends played a guitar or a drum made out of a bucket, they were all in tune with the original song but Kaeya seemed to have his own version.
"Oh my dearest... will you give this lonesome and poor little Spanish boy your sweetest yes?" He said so dramatically, maybe you should've banned him from reading Jane Austen or Shakespeare.
You laughed at his advances before giving him the shockest shock of his life, "Sure... why not?"
He looked like was about to faint when he heard those words come out of you, his friends celebrating behind him like a bunch of buffoons while he was still awestrucked.
"R-Really...?" He had to make sure.
"Yes, now come in and meet my mother before I change my mind." You've never seen this usually spoiled man who had everything handed to him with a snap of his fingers run so fast into your house and to your living room where he met your mother and your father, ready to welcome him as their son in law.
His father would actually faint if he found out about this though. Who would've thought that his son would be able to grab a girl like you?
Neuvilette (Mestizo)
Like Diluc, he was not one to meddle in with romance since he was very busy as a foreign law maker and businessman.
He only found himself in the ports of Manila due to a business pact with a bunch of Sangley's that offered a good proposal, he never thought of soulmates because to him it was just another myth for the hopeless romantics but it was quite ironic as he was in the territory of the romantics of the south eastern islands.
Soulmates were just plain bullshit until he saw you.
A young merchant who was heavily business minded, though it was the 1800s so no one took you that seriously and that's where your brother came in. He was the perfect bridge for Neuvilette to get to know you better, to get to know what fuels that fire that made you glowing like the blazing sun of the tropics.
Neuvilette manages to strike a deal with your brother however when he asks of you, his eyes widened— you were only twenty two while he was already in his late thirties.
A blossoming flower and a mature tree stump was not exactly the most ideal to some but just like nature, it works in different ways.
In one of his tours to the factory of your brother when he saw you show your amazing leadership and logical thinking skills, he admired every single bit of what you've presented to an oldie like him and you were really pretty on top of that.
You would look perfect together, two business driven minds and great skills in making connections— but you were too sweet for him.
You were still too young for his taste so he just waited for you to grow older, not that he expected some sort of miracle from the heavens that was until one day you yourself aroused the idea of secret feelings. You may have had caught up on how he longingly stares at you and how much he admired you so you wanted to know if he wanted an amazing advice for you.
The businessman was blushing hard, it didn't help that he was pale either.
Then he just pulled out a bouquet of flowers towards you, you accepted them of course due to how pretty they were but why did he give it to you?
"Can I... Can I court you, my lady?" Those very words started the long road to your sweet approval to finally call himself yours, he began to stop by the factory more and more to help around to make use of the time he had before he had to go back to France.
And when that dreaded day came, he didn't seem to forget you one bit. Every month your house was bombarded by boxes of love letters and other items that Neuvilette scoured the entirety of his motherland remembering that you liked them.
It took about three years before he finally got the time to go back to the Philippines to see how the joint business he had with your brother was going but mostly it was to see you of course, waiting by the dock was the familiar woman whose address he kept in his head like words engraved in stone.
Too much to his dismay he began to grow white hairs while you were just starting to greet wrinkles to your beautiful face. It made him insecure and made him think twice if he should greet you until you attacked him with a big hug when he was not looking, he took it as an opportunity to raise you up in the air to view that beauty he longed years for before hugging you back even tighter.
To the spectators, it was rather weird to see an unmarried duo be this intimate but it did not matter. Neuvilette didn't suffer two grueling years of courting her without even getting to see her in person just to be ashamed of showing his love for her.
"Sinasagot na kita..." trans: "I'm going to answer your question."
And just like the first time he showed his love for you, he grew pink and became more bashful by the minute.
He tucked your stray hair behind your ear before he leaned down to admire your beautiful eyes that he'd be lucky to see every single morning when he wakes up and night when he goes to sleep, he wanted you to be his and wanted his entire being to be in your hands, that was how much he loved you.
"And I'm not too young anymore..." Your witty comment making both of you chuckle before his laugh died down as he continued to look into your eyes.
"And I won't get tired of loving you everyday of the rest of my mortal life." He was about to continue his very sappy and sweet dialogue when your brother butted in with an all too familiar smile on his face, "So can I have my business partner now?"
Right, as much as you wanted to greet your suitor and now nobyo, your brother also was here to greet his business partner. Maybe you two will talk this out later on when you two have the time but for now, you were here for business.
Wriothesley (Probinsyano)
Being the eldest of his family, Wriothesley was sent to work at the Hacienda of a rich businessman near the city.
He didn't mind the work at all as he himself wanted to do something to help around the house in many ways possible, being family oriented and too busy raising his younger siblings, love wasn't exactly his first priority in mind until he saw you.
Your father was touring him and other new workers around the farm when he saw you passing by and conversing with your friends, so this was what all the craze was about city girls.
Every time you visited the farm while he tended to the horse stable he made sure to use that as a chance to converse with you, as you were in one of the shaded benches and reading he suddenly decided to approach you.
"Hi, ma'am... that's umm... a cool looking book" he started but he was a bit nervous, you seemed to be a smart collegiala while he can't even admit his illiteracy.
You couldn't fault him that he couldn't even read or write, after all, he came from a different life than you so you offered to teach him the basics and have him full access to your library.
He was a rather fast learner and you liked that as an impatient woman, that tutoring however slowly turned to a flirting session. You had to admit that Wriothesley was a sweet guy but he just wasn't your type though he was keen on changing that.
From a bag of apples he gathered from the apple orchard to a wheel of cheese that he and his fellow workers managed to create from the left over cow milk they harvested, he did everything he can and did what he knew to sway a woman just to change your mind.
You loved his attitude and insistent nature, you were starting to like him but you just wanted to play with him and pretended to not be so impressed until you surprised him with a surprise visit to your father.
The man was shaking like crazy when he met his boss in a more relaxed setting, it was just him and your father all alone.
"So you like my daughter?" Your father started.
"I- uh...—" Before he could even answer, your father cut him off.
"And I want you to be my son in law."
Wriothesley had to check twice if he heard his boss right, he had been working under him for about a couple years now and your father saw his hardwork around the farm and trying to woo you to accept his offer of love.
"But... you need to make that cheese you made again last time, it was delicious..." Now, with your father's blessing, he gathered his friends to create the same wheel of cheese for your father to further prove that he was serious with you but he did most of the hardwork as he was motivated by you.
While he was busy molding the cheese into shape, you decided to pay a visit and stopped by his friends who were watching him from afar after helping him gather excess milk from the cows.
"That man's head over heels for you, ma'am" one of them said.
You laughed, "I know... the feelings are mutual."
"Creativity comes from those who have a lot of responsibilities but refuses to do them" — Veritas Ratio, the philosopher, probably.
A/N: I am not swaying my feet while writing this, never. And I'm running out of ideas so I may make more Filipino AUs of characters I like to make fanfics of and will probably make text AUs because I'm getting obsessed with the ones on Tiktok.

more and more i am seeing people argue about the role of colonialism in filipino colorism. whenever you point out the racialization of pale skin in the philippines following spanish and american colonial eras, someone comes up to say, “well, there was already colorism in the philippines before white people came.“
to that i say, so what? it doesn’t change anything. the origins of colorism in the philippines is less important than its evolution, and it has evolved into a racial matter after five hundred years. why else would we equate signs of being mestizo and european-ness with beauty and good breeding? it’s not just pale skin that’s desirable among filipinos but everything reminiscent of the european: tall noses, lighter hair color, certain facial features, christianity, hispanic or hispanicized heritage, colonial era fixtures, et cetera. our cultural obsession with mestizos, spain, white america, and anything in the periphery of those things is enough attestation to that.
#philippines#colorism#there are two incentives for colorism in the philippines and they are class and race.#x

quick question, but if i were to make an lmk oc related to yours (specifically an older sibling) would you be fine with that? i dont wanna end up changing nawas lore, but it wouldnt have to be canon to her lore either. also, if there were a website that you specifically recommend for filipino mythology (or jst mythology in general, i need help lmao), what web would it be?
For the sibling part, I'm afraid not :(
but having a cousin or atleast family related (like nephew, second cousin, etc.) is feasible!
one example is the robinson's snake guy (urban legend where a snake guy lives in the robinsons mall and kidnaps girls here in the philippines) that i half-jokingly turned into her cousin
the Elyas (mom's side) is one of the branch families from an oligarch (the illustre) that are connected to devas (mainly from apolaki, god of the sun), while Liang (her father's) has Bakunawan and Haliyan and by extension, a bit of shuimu's blood. the main family aims to get ahold of those with useful abilities and marries laho in the family.
It's really complicated because i use parts of history regarding bornean settlers and aetas from panay island meeting and living with one another, chinese settlers from fujian coming to the philippines, chinese filipinos (mestizo de sangley), the era of the spanish colonizing the philippines- it's very very mixed
a large chunk of the population here have chinese descent, and a lot of them are very powerful in regards to wealth and influence
back to your character at hand, depending on their family's position or wealth, they'll either live a lavish/spoilt or miserable life

I believe this has to be asked at some point, what is Antonio and Piri's relationship like?
Our internalized racism (thanking Spain for uniting the ethnolinguistic groups to form the PH, Islamophobia and prejudice against Indigenous people, desiring Western validation too much, viewing ourselves as not Southeast Asian enough due to Catholicism overpowering Hindu-Buddhism, etc.) toxic machismo (patriarchy and all its consequences and misogyny and the huge support for authoritarian politicians), hypocrisy (of the Church and everything else), and a lot more can trace its roots from the Spanish colonization of the Philippines
But for Spain, era solo otro día.
The Philippines was not Spain's most profitable colony, and there are even instances of people saying it's a waste of money. Credit goes to @sweaty-clouds for these excerpts:
With the constant typhoons that damage crops and the lack of spices which Indonesia is blessed with (to be fair, Mindanao had cinnamon but Spain failed to conquer most of it.), the Philippines was better off as a trading hub for Chinese goods bound for Acapulco and Europe. Ultimately, it was the missionaries that insisted on keeping the country (that's another can of worms), and in terms of foreign policy, and the Spanish empire needs to have a hold in Asia.
I can imagine Antonio comparing Piri constantly with his peers and being disappointed but still keeping him for Christianity's sake. He rarely visits him and leaves all the work to Mexico (Nueva España, then) until Mexico became independent and Suez Canal was opened which made travelling from Sp to Ph became faster.
Piri would ask how come his neighbors are productive and Antonio would blame him for being lazy rather than Spain's late industrialization and dependence on the mining of silver and gold in exchange for Chinese goods.
Jose Rizal criticized this Spanish style mercantilism: While we see all the walls of London covered with advertisements of the products of its colonies, while the English make heroic efforts to substitute Ceylon tea for Chinese tea, they themselves begin with the sacrifice of their taste and their stomach; in Spain, with the exception of tobacco, nothing from the Philippines is known: neither its sugar nor coffee, hemp nor fine cloths, nor its Ilocano blankets . . . . The most commercial and most industrious countries have been the freest countries: France, England and the United States prove this. Hongkong, which is not [equal to] the most insignificant [island] of the Philippines, has more commercial movement than all the islands together, because it is free and is well-governed.
But I am in no way an Anglo-Saxon apologist. They are fcked up too. This has to be pointed out because there were instances in PH history where some Filipinos would rather be a British colony in the belief that the success of Hongkong and Singapore can be imitated!
The PH economy did become less restrictive when Spain lost its colonies in the Americas (deserve!). Many were afforded the right to study in Europe, hence, the ilustrados and enlightened thinkers like Jose Rizal, Marcelo del Pilar, etc. With enlightenment, comes the desire to be independent.
So, Antonio tries to be . . . more amiable with Piri. Piri appreciates it since he wants his respect but he wants equal status (as he should), equal rights, and often criticizes the church. Little Piri wanted to be the favourite and would often pray the rosary and the novena, hoping it would make him the apple of Antonio's eyes, but teenage Piri ain't taking any shit anymore because if God exists, they would favor David and not Goliath.
Then there's the Spanish-American war.
Now I heard Spain was more sentimental about losing Cuba (whether it's real life or Hetalia canon). There's the Generation '98, but it was never about Piri alone. It was about the fallen empire. Their relationship remains strained throughout the 20th century, especially when some upperclass Mestizo families in the Philippines supported Franco and were leaning towards the Axis powers, but the Philippines was trying to take in more Jewish refugees. Learning the Spanish language was also no longer required, and more attention was given to learning English since there's more job opportunities (and also, Hollywood).
Perhaps in the recent decade, Piri and Antonio are more cordial and diplomatic for the sake of trade relations and business. The Arroyo administration was active in that regard. Filipinos, nowadays, would joke about fighting Spaniards and while we do acknowledge the lingering colonial mentality and how fcked up colonialism is, we're not hostile to Spaniards. There's also this anecdote from a former teacher and her interaction with a Spaniard who said something along the lines of, "I learned about what Spain did to the Philippines, and I'm sorry. But it was the Castillans who did it! Not me, I'm from Catalonia."
But since Piri (and Filipinos) is canonically sassy, he would have visited Antonio in the midst of his financial crisis and asked, "Can I get a discount in Zara as colonial reparations?"
#i don't hate Antonio!! I just love to bully him#and my headcanons would be a lot more friendly towards Antonio if this was SpaPhil#hetalia#hws philippines#hws spain#and I am genuinely asking for discounts on Spanish businesses as colonial reparations

i can imagine him at the first chapter (yun ba yun) of noli where they were shit talking the native filipinos and noir just chimes in saying, "well you know, the people here are probably only uneducated because... you won't give them an education? hence, you lot (the colonizers) are backwards for not providing them with the necessary graces these lovely people need to live. you're blaming them for your own lack of a mind."
he'd see you as a PERSON and not as a SLAVE. especially if you were a poor indio forced into slavery for a big mestizo/mestiza, HE'D WORK, FIGHT, AND BUY YOUR WAY OUT OF SERVITUDE FOR THEM BECAUSE HE LOVES YOU AND HATES SEEING YOU CHAINED DOWN TO THIS KIND OF LIFE.
he'd be so close to basilio and crispin, and when crispin crispun down the stairs... he was never the same : ( he felt super bad for sisa and was so regretful that he couldn't get those boys out of there any quicker.
i think the guardia civil and higher ups there would've hated him LMAO, but he doesn't care, he's gonna fight his way out of this, keep you safe, and marry you one day.
he wants half-filipino kids, he knows they'd have the cutest eyes and the prettiest complexion to him
HE'D TAKE YOU OUT ON A BOAT RIDE AT NIGHT AND UNDER THE LIGHT OF THE STARS AND THE MOON, AS THE CRICKETS SING AND AS THE ALITAPTAP SURROUND YOU GUYS, HE'D SING OLD LOVE SONGS HE LEARNED IN TAGALOG WITH YOUUUU
he refuses to speak spanish and only talks to in tagalog.
HE BURNS COPIES OF TANDANG BASIO MACUNAT BECAUSE HE KNOWS IT'S BULLSHIT
when you two are riding a kalesa, he holds on to you tightly because he doesn't want you to get hurt when the roads get bumpy, and bc it's an excuse to get close to you :)
HE DOESN'T HATE THE TULISANES TBH, he gets why they're the way they are, but he will not hesitate to FUCK THEM UP IF THEY SO MUCH AS TOUCH A SINGLE STRAND OF HAIR ON YOUR HEAD
he has expressed wanting to marry you and love you for the rest of his life so many times, and how eager he is to wait for your answer, be it a yes or a no, be it today, tonight, tomorrow, or until he's old--just never leave him without telling him a yes or no.
a/n: I CAN'T HE'S SO RIZAL CODED

OC Questions Tag
Thank you, @thewriteflame for the tag!
Let us focus on the OC of my Perfect 'Verse, Miguel Chua y Hizon:
5 words to physically describe your OC:
Tan-skinned, dark-eyed, medium-height, smirking, and snarky.
Who inspired your OC?:
I do not have a singular source of inspiration for my OC, but he is the product of the questions in my mind like how would Jo Gar and Sadi Ratan would deal with someone with a victim-slash-survivor of Filipino and Chinese heritage (he is a Chinese mestizo, BTW). Someone who would rather gouge his eyes than deal with the likes of them for various reasons. Someone who defies the two men's way of thinking of his kind, someone who does not let them bully him.
Give me a song to define your OC:
Cassandra by Taylor Swift, which expresses his fears of not being believed by many (especially by Jo Gar and Sadi Ratan) and paying the ultimate price for trying to expose the truth about a family that actually committed crimes.
If I met your OC on the street, how would they greet me?:
If I bump with him on the street, he would be freaking out and go apologetic about me being hurt, like "Oh no! I'm so sorry! Are you okay? Are you hurt?" But he would be gentlemanly with me throughout our interactions and ensure that I am safe if I decide to leave.
Can your OC be your best friend? Why?:
If he is in the current state he is in the 'Verse, it is going to be difficult to get through his armor of sarcasm. But if he lets you in, you will see that underneath all the layers of snark, you will see that he cares about his family and friends, he has fears and insecurities, and that he does his best to keep himself above water. He is a sweet, smart, loyal guy bogged down by his personal baggage (and his secret mission) but tries not to show it to others due to his upbringing, training, and circumstances. Given the circumstances, it may take time, but yes, I can be besties with Miguel because I see his struggles and I go through such as well and we love to roast the two guys (because why the hell not? The feeling is mutual!)
1 adjective and 1 noun to describe your OC:
Mistrustful survivor
Soft-tagging: @avoidingcertaindoom, @kaylinalexanderbooks, @winterandwords, @laplumedemaureen, but this is also an open tag for those who want to participate in the game.
Happy Writing!

Hi! Edd AND Eddy 5, 12, 14, 25 :3
Thanks!! Sorry I wrote up an entire long answer and then uuuhhh my phone died 🤡 so let’s do this again!
5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?
Not necessarily the songs of all time but recently it’s been
Edd:
Eddy:
And hell why not shipping music:
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
Quickly, let me preface this section with the fact that I myself am white.
From the jump I’ve always thought Edd was not white, or mixed race, and had parents that were either first or second gen immigrants. And that it’s not very apparent in canon because his family assimilated really hard. I always felt this helped to explain a bit of his cultural sensitivities while at the same time adding some more depth to the intergenerational dynamics. Previously I’d imagined him as Filipino/white and more recently I’ve written him as mestizo/korean/white. I like seeing lots of other takes on this in the fandom throughout the years, like somewhat recently eddbedandeddy’s post that he could be MENA like his VA or gettingfrilly mentioning they see him as racially ambiguous. Recently the phrase “ancestral fruitcake” has been incessantly plaguing my mind (‘Tis the season/ is or is this not a hilarious stand in for the f-word slur please discuss among yourselves people) but that to me indicates that at least one line of his family is hwite.
Keeping on theme, I really cannot resist coding Eddy’s family as stereotypically dysfunctional Italian American (and let me elaborate on my opening statement by stating this identity IS my circus my monkeys 🙈). Memelzebub described his parents as Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman in the movie Matilda and I agree hard on that!
14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character.
Okay I looooove playing dress up with these guys so let’s get into it. I envision these more as they get into their teens and older.
Edd: a bit of grandpa (chunky thrifted sweaters), casual 90’s/00’s streetwear (long sleeve quarter zips, sneakers), specialized outdoorsy gear (like 100 pocket cargo pants, swishy pull over rain jackets) and he’s always kinda cold (puffer vests, layers, etc) uhhh and he still wears outrageously colored and patterned socks. I like to imagine he’d expand his hat selection. He prefers to dress practically and comfortably.
Eddy: SO MUCH STYLE POTENTIAL. He likes fashion so I could see him playing up lots of styles and having lots of phases through his teens and into adulthood. Other than 70s inspired fashion, I’d be lying if I didn’t shout out butch lesbians as a fashion inspiration. In high school I often imagine him wearing more casual 00’s clothing - baggy jeans and long jorts and skater sneakers and polos and bowler shirts. And then as he gets older he leans into more “slutty 70s” men’s fashion. I think for loungewear he has a huge selection of dramatic robes and kaftans like some old Hollywood diva.
25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?
Edd: idk this is classic but I had a crush on him as a kid. What can I say. Now I don’t have a crush on him but find him incredibly interesting and complex and fun to think about (: I think I always liked that he was a big nerd with sort of odd interests because I related to it. Now I relate most to his unmedicated anxiety 🙃
Eddy: also classic response, I found him grating and annoying during the original air time. But I didn’t flat out hate him or anything. I found his voice interesting and he was funny! Now I love love love Eddy. I only watched BPS in like 2013 and man did that really shift things for me in terms of being emotionally invested in this pink cube. What a guy!

[ID: a digital sketch of the crew from Trice Forgotten captioned Thanks for Listening. The crew pose like they're taking a selfie on the ship. At the front, Siva, a South Asian man with short hair and round glasses grins widely as he throws his arms over the shoulders of Noor and Inez. Noor is a Yemeni person with a beard, a thick headscarf and bracelets and they hold out a hand with a snail on it. Inez is a Filipino Mestizo with a sour expression and curly short hair, holding up a peace sign. In the back, Baker, a Black man with a curly white beard and afro puts his hand on Alestes' shoulder, who is a Black Chinese woman with a scar over one eye, her hair in twists and her arms crossed over her chest. Baker looks proud, Alestes looks annoyed. End ID]

San Lorenzo Ruiz
The first Filipino saint was a mestizo de sangley (mixed Chinese and Filipino), and I want to honor that by dressing him in a plain camisa de chino (left, collarless shirt with round neck; part of his traditional iconography) and also in a variant of the barong Tagalog that borrows elements from the Tangzhuang. His rosary has the Dominican cross because he was a lay brother under the Dominicans.
San Lorenzo Ruiz was born in Binondo, Manila, site of the city's Chinatown. In 1636, after being accused of murdering a Spaniard, he sought refuge with Dominican missionaries and went with them to Japan. In Nagasaki, they endured horrific torture including waterboarding and denailing in an effort to coerce them to renounce their faith. Finally, they were put through the tsurushi, a Japanese torture technique in which the victim is hung upside-down in a hole filled with sewage. Two days of this torture, and he refused to recant. His last words were:
I am a Catholic and wholeheartedly do accept death for God;
Had I a thousand lives, all these to Him shall I offer.
Cardinal Tagle sings "Sanlibong Buhay" (A Thousand Lives), composed by Jandi Arboleda and Father Manoling Francisco, SJ.

a consequence of filipinos’ obsession with the foreign and mestizo: this image
it’s very telling that we would rather embrace filipino, a term meant for spanish colonists in las islas filipinas, instead of indio, a term which only means ‘indian’ and was used to refer to our native ancestors. both are colonial inventions yet filipinos have such an asymmetrical reaction to the word indio that we would rather invent or suggest parallels between it and actual racial slurs. (ironically, it is filipinos themselves who are the first to hurl racial slurs against aeta and mixed black filipinos.)
“the N word” is far worse than spaniards haphazardly naming any brown person they saw ‘indian.’
