Hello!

I've always wanted to do a stealth game/campaign, but all my attempts to hack it into DnD have failed. Do you have any suggestions for a stealthy system? Not something as abstract as Knives in the Dark (tbh, I just have never been able to get into it) but something that hits the Assassin's Creed feeling of watching the target, making a plan, and then sneaking through the base taking out guards and hiding their bodies and such. Preferably on a grid map or similar, s we're terrible at theatre of the mind.

THEME: Stealthy Games.

Hello there, so I did some digging and I found plenty of stealth games, although none of them seem to really require a map in order to play. That being said, I don’t think that should stop you from providing maps to your players, even if they’re abstract! Some of these games might ask you to sketch out a rough map of the town or building that you’re in, which may help you provide your players with some visual references as they sneak around, trying not to get caught. When it comes to stealth, I think of three things: horror, heists, and spies.

Delta Green, by Arc Dream Publishing.

Born of the U.S. government’s 1928 raid on the degenerate coastal town of Innsmouth, Massachusetts, the covert agency known as Delta Green opposes the forces of darkness with honor but without glory. Delta Green agents fight to save humanity from unnatural horrors—often at a shattering personal cost.

Delta Green comes highly recommended as a great way to play an X-Files type rpg, mixed in with the Cthulhu mythos. It uses a d100 system and is based in the modern day, casting your characters as former members of government agencies, recruited into a super-secret bureau that investigates supernatural things - and keeps those things hidden from the common public. The stealth of this game is mostly about covering up the eldritch and unnatural, even if it means framing someone else or condemning a beloved building.

Your characters in this game have some familiar pieces to them, such as six stats with the same titles as you’ll see in games like D&D. However, you’ll also have pieces like Bonds, which represent relationships that keep your character grounded, and a Sanity system that I’m personally not crazy about (I do not recommend this game for a group that doesn’t like trite mechanization of mental health disorders), but that gives you a way to incur penalties that aren’t just physical damage.

This looks to be the closest to a traditional rpg on this list, and with all the elements to keep track of, I can see how a physical map would be helpful. However, keep in mind that there isn’t a pace or speed stat attached to these characters, so things like line of sight or distance probably won’t be super granular - if you are shooting things you may have broad range bands to determine how difficult something is, but the final decision will be a GM decision, not something necessarily determined in the rulebook. Because the setting is a modern one, I think finding visual references for locations in this game would be very very easy.

Minutes to Midnight, by Oliver S.

Minutes to Midnight is a game powered by Blades in the Dark about a crew of spies, trying to disrupt the balance of power in a modern cold war. They will have to stand strong in the face of their vicious opposition and handle a fragile web of untrustworthy informants, devious intrigues and deadly lies.

We play to find out if our agents can thrive in the cutthroat world of espionage. While the public may never know about their impact, their actions shape the political landscape and outcome of conflict. Will the players prevent the outbreak of a global disaster and use their influence to create a better future? Will they attempt to send the opposing bloc into a turmoil and establish a lasting hegemony? Or will their actions lead the world down a path of war and nuclear destruction?

The Forged in the Dark system uses a cycle in between missions and downtime, sinking your characters into the heart of the action as they pursue clandestine missions in locations built by the group in a session 0. Since the game takes place in the real world, using maps of real cities might be a great way to keep they players visually engaged, and using a city that the group has been to or is familiar with might also make it easier for the group to visualize the kinds of buildings and streets where their spies may be sneaking, scheming, and sleuthing.

Madstones, by xiombarg.

Those who know magic exists at all are the rich and teams of breakers like yourself that go into the jartowns for the Archons. Jartowns are created by burning folk alive in a wicker man, in a ritual known only to the oldest jet-setting Archons.

A jartown is an isolated area of spacetime that was cut out of our reality. Most jartowns consist of a small amount of space (enough for a suburb or town) and a loop of several years. Jartowns become more magickal and horrific with each loop, creating madstones.

Madstones are small things, from actual stones to human organs, infused with concentrated, distilled magic. They're secretly coveted by the wealthy.

In this tiny 24XX-based tabletop RPG, players are breakers, desperate folk from the occult underground who find a way into the jartowns, hothouses for magick, to perform errands for the ultrarich Archons.

Play as a variety of roles, from sawbones to sinner to spook, and choose to hail from one of four origins, including jartown native.

24XX games are another toolbox that you can pick up and play around with to help you get started with creating your own experiences. Your character consists of a few skills and gear packaged together in a character class. In Madstones, these classes are various specialists, trained to deal with different elements that might pop up when you go delving into eldritch pockets of reality. There is both a stealth and a combat specialist in this game, but there’s also classes for things like a getaway driver, a hacker, and an occult specialist.

24XX games also exist because of their OSR predecessors, meaning that combat is risky, and often deadly - and therefore finding other ways to solve the problem is implicitly encouraged. However, the openness of the system means that your players don’t necessarily need to resort to stealth - they might prepare an elaborate ritual, create a unique piece of technology, or just decide to run away as fast as they can. In regards to maps, I think you could probably use a typical dungeon framework: leading the characters through various rooms or sections of the pocket dimension, and throwing horrors and weird environments their way.

Night’s Black Agents, by Pelgrane Press.

The Cold War is over. Bush’s War is winding down. You were a shadowy soldier in those fights, trained to move through the secret world: deniable and deadly.

Then you got out, or you got shut out, or you got burned out. You didn’t come in from the cold. Instead, you found your own entrances into Europe’s clandestine networks of power and crime. You did a few ops, and you asked even fewer questions. Who gave you that job in Prague? Who paid for your silence in that Swiss account? You told yourself it didn’t matter. It turned out to matter a lot. Because it turned out you were working for vampires.

Vampires exist. What can they do? Who do they own? Where is safe? You don’t know those answers yet. So you’d better start asking questions. You have to trace the bloodsuckers’ operations, penetrate their networks, follow their trail, and target their weak points. Because if you don’t hunt them, they will hunt you. And they will kill you.

A combination of modern spy fiction and vampire intrigue, Night’s Black Agents uses the GUMSHOE system, which is an investigative roleplaying system that provides your characters with resources they can spend to get into secret locations, compete against vampiric agents, and pick up information to help you put together the details of a conspiracy. In Night’s Black Agents, finding clues isn’t left up to chance - you will always get information as long as you tell the GM that you’re using a relevant skill. The obstacles in this game are more likely going to involve getting in and out of sticky situations - and if your opponents are vampires, well, stealth is likely going to be a more appealing than trying to slit their throats.

GUMSHOE games don’t need grid maps either, but a rough map of the city or country is probably very helpful, and it might be fun to draw the floor plans of various buildings that your players investigate in order to help them determine what areas may be the most interesting places to search for clues.

The Breathing, by Fistful of Crits.

You reside in The Archive, an unending and depthless structure spiralling deep into the dark and misty depths, devoid of life and presided over by a being known only to you as The Archivist.

The Archive is made up of windowless rooms and halls that vary greatly in their height, size and danger. All these spaces house numerous shelves containing the collected knowledge of the world outside of The Archive; a place you have been told you must earn your access to. The price of your freedom comes from the discovery of new or forgotten knowledge that can be found in the deepest parts of the structure.

You, and a few others, are known as The Breathing, in a place full of creatures who were once like you but ultimately failed in their bid for freedom; now known as The Breathless.

The Breathing is just an example of a broader style of game, using a system called Breathless. Breathless games use a series of polyhedral dice that deteriorate as you use them, with different dice attached to different skills. Throughout the game you pause to “take a breath”, and re-set your skills, bringing your dice back to their threshold. However, pausing to take a breath also gives the GM a chance to introduce a new trouble or complication, creating a cycle of mission, rest, mission, rest, etc.

As a game system, Breathless is pretty light and is fairly easy to hack. But the lightness of the rules also allows for creativity and add-ons, which could include rules for movement or placement. Since the game rewards finding ways to solve problems without having to resort to direct conflict, I can see games like this encouraging characters to think carefully about when to use their resources and when to just… sneak around the problem. If you want to include maps and a grid, you could provide a blueprint of a room inside The Archive and watch the players try to navigate it using their limited resources, with designated “rest areas” that they would have to get to in order to take a Breath.

This certainly isn’t a solution in a box, but it might provide some interesting tools to help you build the experience you’re looking for.

Night Reign, by Sinister Beard Games.

Night Reign is a roleplaying game of stealth, guile, violence and devilry for a GM and one or more players, set in a quasi-Edwardian metropolis perched on an inhospitable peninsula beset by toxic black rain and ruled by a corrupt cabal of Noble Houses.

You take the role of members of The Red Right Hand, a conspiracy loyal to the recently deposed royal family, using your talents in assassination, infiltration and dark sorcery to strike out at your oppressors.

A game all about the things you do in the shadows, Night Reign uses cards to resolve conflict, rather than dice. It also uses a token system to help you overcome obstacles without having to resort to violence - loud, messy, dangerous violence. The Ruled by Night system (which has an SRD that you can download for free) is about balancing the suspicion you’ve already raised against an increasing cost to being stealthy. You spend Shadow tokens in order to be able to attempt to do something, and try to get a hand as close as possible to 21, or at least higher than whatever the GM draws. Your characters will also have powers that can be very effective, but are likely to draw a lot of attention, so using them is risky.

Because of how this game runs, things like movement and speed are not likely to be tracked. However, I don’t think mapping out a location so that the players can understand where things are or what kind of space they’re in is going to hurt the experience. The SRD describes something called City Conditions, which appear to be elements of the fiction that might result from the characters’ choices, or provide obstacles to the players. If you have a map of the city in front of you, you could draw symbols on the map to indicate what’s happening as the story progresses, and even cross out places that have been destroyed.

Heist, by Hark Forsooth Games.

HEIST: Get the Crew Together is a cooperative RPG where you and a group of suave, savvy and slick fellow crooks plan and execute capers, grabbing the fanciest loot from the world's wealthy elite.

Heist is great for fans of shows like Leverage or movies like Ocean’s 11: you’re going to steal something shiny from someone who certainly doesn’t deserve it, and you’re going to do it with style. While combat is an option, your characters will also have to deal with suspicious marks, security systems, laser grids and bank vaults. The characters are composed of special talents and personal flaws, and the GM has the task of designing something the game calls Murphy’s Gun - a major twist that will reveal itself midway through the heist.

It can be tricky to determine what to prep for a game like this, but one thing that you can for sure prep is the location. Design the building, draw the floor plan, and come up with obstacles for the different areas - there’s not really movement tracking in this game but having the layout will certainly help your players come up with ideas about how to get in, get out, and get rich.

Another thing to consider…

Mothership doesn’t have any stealth skills, but what it does have is the incentive to be sneaky. If an alien horror is moving through the ship, you’re more likely to try and stay out of it’s way - and having no stealth skills means that the players have to describe what they’re doing to stay hidden; climb into vents, squeeze yourself into cupboards, and try to wriggle into the space suit. However, this doesn’t mean that you’re not rolling - you might roll to clamber over something or to fit yourself into something, or you might roll to scope out a location to find an exit or suitable hiding place. It’s also excellent in terms of maps - plenty of adventures will provide at least a blueprint of the space station or ship that you’re exploring, which you can use to spook your players with fresh horrors.

I saw that you use a tablet, a desktop, and paper notes. How do you conciliate those notes?

Is there a mechanism of making primary notes on one resource and then passing those notes to other while reviewing them?

hi! thanks so much for asking! here are my favorite methods for sharing notes between devices :). i personally have apple devices so i can fairly easily airdrop and sync things between devices, but i also frequently work at the library desktop computers where i can't do that! so here's my tips and tricks for sharing notes between devices

for context: i've been mostly doing digital notetaking recently, but i also like to scan my paper notes as well!

i'm going to be dividing this post into 2 methods! (there will be some overlap). syncing already written notes and syncing notes (in progress) between devices

for already written notes:

the first step i would take is export your notes as a pdf or any other file type. if they're handwritten try going into your notes app (for ios) or downloading a pdf scanner app for your phone! if your notes are digital check the sharing options in your app to see if there's anything about "exporting".

personally, i like to use either discord or notion. i have created a discord server with only myself that i use just for sharing links/files/anything between devices! i like discord because there's apps for pc, mac, tablets, and phones; and even a web app! discord is really nice and fast, and you can make different channels (as pictured below) for organization. as long as your file size isn't too big, you should be fine.

my second app i like to use is notion! notion is such a beast in itself, but i like to use it to upload files and images and links! below are two ways i have used it: to upload pdfs/files, and to upload goodnotes (my notetaking app) links to the pages i'm writing on! similar to discord, notion has apps for all devices, but it also works great just by itself on the website (no app required)! it's really great to access it from all my devices.

another way you could share your notes on different devices is through the cloud! (yes, discord and notion are both through the cloud). google drive, microsoft onedrive, icloud storage, etc. are great tools that you can use to upload files and see on multiple devices. i personally like discord and notion more, just because they're already apps i frequently use, but if you can't get either one cloud-based storage platforms are also a great idea! they definitely have more security than discord or notion, because your files may be at risk of being deleted!

for the purposes of sharing notes to reference on another device when writing an essay, or something of similar vain, i really love discord and/or notion and they both work great!

for syncing notes in real time:

pretty similar to the last one, i would say notion or google docs (or microsoft word on the web i believe has similar functionality, or onenote, anything similar!)

if you want to be writing notes on one device and have them sync up quickly on another - i think any word processing software is the best bet for you.

both notion and google docs you can access them on any device, and/or on their websites too!

google docs is a lot more straightforward, but since notion is so powerful it provides a lot of flexibility for your notes! here's an (old) example of notes i've taken on notion. (i personally really like how easy it is to make columns!)

also! notetaking is very much an individual thing, if something works for me and doesn't work for you - that's okay! we're all learning and just have to figure out what's best for ourselves.

Abstraction Tech and Webpages

Dear W3C (et. al)

I have an improvement white paper that you may actually be able to use this time.

The one thing we see as a [necessity] when it comes to developing web sites and pages and even apps and large-scale operations; is the need to break off the <html> part of a file from the <article> part while (not) adding overhead, extraneous scripting, or most importantly; MESSING WITH THE OUTLINE.

This is how most if not *every* website online has come into being. That does. Rely on [Pure HTML] because it's too cumbersome for [Dynamized Content]

And the internet; is nearly all Dynamic Content.

So there's frequent and [WAY TOO MANY] different frameworks and approaches to address this issue when we could just... Ask you to fix the thing that everybody keeps over engineerimg their websites to provide at a [Native Level] which is usually way to High-Level to be considered [Native to the Software]

And this increases complexity and limits understanding for the layperson.

Brief;

There needs to be support for <HTML Snippet-pages> {[coined-term pending] thanks to [HTML Snippets] already existing as a term};

Or HTML pages that do not start at <HTML> and can start at any defined <HTML> tag, like <Article>.

In this way <Article> pages could then be cycled through and <iframe> OR a [Dedicated Viewer HTML for Articles with {definition}]

This also helps clean up our <js can exist everywhere, and here is why> paradigm that is great. Allowing for {scripts} to be loaded along with the {article} where {it frickin should be}.

This *also* allows for alternative [bundling methods] that can be utilized at a [Native] or [Lower Power] level.

A *completed HTML application* definition for example that allows you to simply compile all the separate things into the same App-Facade. Which can help alleviate [Download Time Measurement] issues as well.

And all of things reduce the *amount* of generated and pre-generated content at the server level and *SUPER DUPER* would help reduce the complexity and difficulty it takes to become a [Full-Stack Developer]

There also *should* be the following subsequent considerations;

{CSS/JS} engine reduction that is sandboxed and appropriate. (Ability to cross between CSS and JS where it *matters* to the *Rendering Engine*)

And something more blended for approaches that require [Custom][Rendering][Engine] {sandboxes}.

And, you know, *more* scripting [sandboxes] so the fun stuff that *can* be hacked is kept separate from the [important bits] that *should not* be Hacked.

Giving Legal Precedence for the following statement;

"{Wrote *and* executed} an [automated script] for the [explicit purposes] of [Hacking] {that which} [was not intended] to be [used] by [The Developers] in such a [manner.]

(And/Or) May have been responsible for [causing damages] that {mayhaps *should*} be [viewed as] either [Negligent or Malicious].

(And/Or) May be *fine* if the [automated script] {stayed} in [the Sandbox] *where* [it{approved hacks}] were [intended to go]."

I work for insane people

So… I started work a few months ago and...

I keep being impressed with corporations lowering my expectations.

Like. EVERY time I think "Surely, this is as incompetent as it gets".

The boss is nice, the workers are nice, every PERSON is great so far. But the firm is just… fucked in ways that makes it hard to not scream with laughter.

It is like working in the ministry of silly walks by Monty Python. Insane things are happening, and everyone just acts like it is normal.

A dude was stating to someone else near me, that despite the costumers saying they did not want it, his code that crashed the application once a day, was NECESSARY, because writing code without memory leaks in C is basically impossible. Like… I just have all these small moments of insanity. Completely disconnected from each-other

My boss showing me and the other 3 new hires the coffee room, where a big screen proudly shows that not a single software product have 100% code coverage… as in, not a single person in this entire building filled with software people knows how code coverage works. He then points out an empty bowl, and declares "Twice a week, there is a fruit event". By which he means, fresh fruit is provided, and people can just grab some…. just said by a alien who is pretending to be human. Badly.

He then explained that the 2 coffee machines in here makes bad coffee. He then takes us to the copy room, showing us that THIS is where the GOOD coffee machine is. Which only takes coffee beans from a SPECIFIC vendor (Is… is the coffee machine… sponsored????)

He briefly pets the Foosball table (Again, in the copy room), which is jammed up against the wall so you can only reach the controls on one side ( Because, again, it is a copy room, and there is not enough space for it ) and he exclaims "Ahhhh… Not enough people are using this"

Suggesting, that he is trying to promote the little known sport "Single-player Foosball">

I start setting up my work PC and... Whenever any of the developers in this place wants to install things on their PC's, including compilers and testing frameworks, they have to either use the "SOFTWARE CENTER" program, which installs it FOR you… or in 10% of the cases, fails, without giving you any context for why it did that, and no tools for fixing it. Is it missing a dependency? Not working with the OS? Who knows!

Some programs cannot be installed like this though, because the SOFTWARE CENTER is not updated a lot. And when you want to install something the normal way… You get a popup, where you must provide a written explanation for why you need to have temporary admin rights to your own dang PC … you then submit that, and your screen will then be watched remotely by a worker from India, for a varied amount of time you are not told…

Or at least it says so. Maybe the Indian dude watching me is just an empty threat. Who knows. But they get to see me running absolutely… BONKERS .bat files

Like, I CHECKED them, and a good 80% of them calls a Power-Shell script in the folder above it, called "YES_OR_NO.ps1" which opens a windows 95 window informing you that DURING INSTALLATION YOU MAY NOT USE THE KEYBOARD OR MOUSE, AS IT MAY DISTURB THE SCRIPT THAT WILL INSTALL THE PROGRAM. A normal installation wizard then runs, except the developers are not trusted to click the buttons, and instead the script does it for you by moving and clicking the mouse.

All of this is documented. In markdown like reasonable people? Of course not! It is in ENHANCED markdown. Which is markdown in the same way javascript is java.

ENHANCED markdown requires browser and visual studio code extensions to be read. Completely missing the point of markdown being readable both raw and encoded… And sometimes word documents And sometimes power-point presentations left next to another bat file… this one calling the .exe file… right next to it…. I later found out is because the idea USED to be that all documentation MUST be made with Microsoft office tools.

I had to read the code of conduct today. And it was actually very well written.

I then watched a interactive animation telling me about the code of conduct… which it not only got a fact wrong about, it also broke it once.

I repeat. The introductory course in the code of conduct… broke the code of conduct'

After I watched that, and read the safety material…. which literally just said "Wear safety boots in the production floor"… I was then show the testing room.

I was lead to a different building, saying hello to the Vice CEO who was walking the other way, we walk into the production floor, ignored the fact that none of us have safety boots on, and walks into a room, with a 3*2 meter wide machine, several meters tall.

We edge around it, quietly hoping no one turns it on, since we would get slammed by it if they did, and walk down some stairs into the basement. Casually walk over a small river in the floor from a pipe that is leaking… what I really hope is water, and over to a shelf rack FILLED with the most MacGyver shit you ever did see.

Including, but not limited to, the 3D printed plastic block, with a piston that repeatedly smacking half a aluminum nameplate over the device it is testing. You see, it is a capacitance button, and it is testing it by simulating a human finger pressing it many thousands of times, a saws off antenna which is the end of a cable that is attached to it via a nice thick bolt, so it can send fake signals into it.

And of course the 24 volt, 5 amp system that is turning a circuit board on and off again, until it will crack.

We walk back out, remembering to step over the small river, which never even got a comment, and walk back to my department It is SO great. It is like working in the ministry of silly walks by Monty Python Like… Do I think I can bring value to this company? Like, making it better and more efficient? Yes. It would be hard not to!

And his is the largest pump manufacturer in the world! A super serious company with 4 billion dollars of revenue a year. And it is just… a NUTHOUSE

Like… NEVER believe the myth that corporations are competent.

I had a second save going on right behind my first one, and what better option to pick than THE DARK URGE. It felt like I was playing an actual character with personal ties to the story because I was playing an actual character with personal ties to the story.

Eventually, I got tired of jumping from save file to save file sooo I plugged in a second controller to make Tav for the Dark Urge run!

SO, my Durge went about the same route as my Tav did regarding choices. Though where Tav usually got past problems with charisma and being a quirky lil shit, Durge killed everyone.

This wasn't exactly me roleplaying the character either. Since this save was behind my first one, the battles I had skipped with charisma were fought as Durge just because I never got to experience them.

Tav was a multi-classing Bard while my Durge was a Barbarian for pretty much the entire run. Playing a support during one run and switching to an angry dragon who had no problems running up to someone with an axe on the other really made both playthroughs feel unique.

Snarking at others while ultimately doing the right thing (when the Urge wasn't taking control), if someone threatened his life, they died. That's it. He wasn't always killing because he needed to sate his bloodlust; but because it always felt so necessary.

He'll make violent, colorful threats that he hopes he doesn't have to follow up on, as if a battle ensues, he will do exactly that.

Because of this and despite his heroic intentions, he has a somewhat low opinion on himself.

But he's friendly all things considered!

However, its long development has created some oddness about configuration and meta tags. To use Kodi's most convenient features, you may need to focus on setting up the meta tags for your media, adjust naming conventions, and restructure your folders to match the requirements. Depending on your device, you may not be able to adjust these after the auto-scanning is complete (though this is likely more an issue with specific kodi clients rather than the software itself)

Jellyfin: https://jellyfin.org/ - I don't actually know much about it, but I do know it's supposed to be almost as feature complete as plex, but free and open source. Full disclosure, I saw they had a Roku app and installed it, but it refused to play because I disabled media transcoding. It does appear to work fine once that's re-enabled, but it's frustrating because I have ensured that all of my videos are in a format that can be natively decoded by my devices. I specifically do not want to have transcoding required.

Usage: The big benefit these bring over the network share is the automation. If given the correct hardware, they will transcode (re-encode on the fly) videos for delivery to clients, and will scan and pull all sorts of media meta-data. Transcoding is very useful because it increases client support by ensuring all users can consume the media on your server, but it's also one of the more expensive things your media server can do. It will increase the hardware demands on your server (and the power consumption).

Build it yourself [Madness]

This is what I chose. It's working out pretty well, leveraging miniDLNA to allow me to use media on devices like my Roku tv, but the only solution for anything that bothers me is for me to go do it myself. So eventually I'll have to write a Roku app.

Mutual asked a question the other day and I've been meaning to expand on it, but if you want a media server you don't have to go whole hog right from the jump.

Ripping a few movies and throwing them on a network share you can play with the VLC app is still pretty convenient, and much faster to set up than getting a full server set up on your network. That's how I started years and years ago. That's how my roommate and I used to watch Star Trek and Batman the Animated Series.

We did go a little extra and find a computer with a Wake on Lan capable motherboard so we could turn the server off while we were out of the apartment and turn it on from our phones. But that's less important with modern electronics that can better limit their idle power draw.

Interpreting the Stories of Romulus & Remus Through Ovid

This is going to be long but I promise that it will also be interesting. I'm going to use an English translation of Ovid's Fasti, Books 3 & 4, to make it easier for reading. You can read the whole thing over on Theoi. I'm just taking excerpts to keep this just a touch shorter than it otherwise would be but reading the whole thing together will provide you with more context. The thing to remember through all of this is that Ovid is clever and he leans heavily on what was common knowledge in his time. As such, he doesn't come out and translate himself for you...

"Languid she rose, nor knew why she rose so languid, and leaning on a tree she spake these words: “Useful and fortunate, I pray, may that turn out which I saw in a vision of sleep. Or was the vision too clear for sleep? Methought I was by the fire of Ilium, when the woolen fillet slipped from my hair and fell before the sacred hearth. From the fillet there sprang a wondrous sight – two palm-trees side by side. Of them one was the taller and by its heavy boughs spread a canopy over the whole world, and with its foliage touched the topmost stars. Lo, mine uncle wielded an axe against the trees; the warning terrified me and my heart did throb with fear. A woodpecker – the bird of Mars and a she-wolf fought in defense of the twin trunks, and by their help both of the palms were saved.” She finished speaking, and by a feeble effort lifted the full pitcher; she had filed it while she was telling her vision. Meanwhile her belly swelled with a heavenly burden, for Remus was growing, and growing, too, was Quirinus."

In this scene, Silvia the Vestal Virgin has just become pregnant with the twins by the god Mars. She dreams of two palm trees, which is meant to be a bit of foreshadowing because date palms are the sacred trees of Artemis & Apollo--another set of sacred twins with deep connections to lycanthropy traditions in the context of the Roman month of February. Red is also the color of both Mars and Artemis, and Artemis is also the Phoinix--a creature that will rise again in holy fire after its death. Artemis will also assist in the birth of the boys, tying it all back together neatly. Her uncle is the current king and he will seek to murder the twins to secure his own line, which is implied by the chopping of the palm trees. Doing this will offend the god Mars. The woodpecker and she-wolf will try to protect them and succeed. This is a divine prophetic vision that Silvia has.

" When now two heavenly signs remained for the bright god to traverse, before the year could complete its course and run out, Silvia became a mother. The images of Vesta are said to have covered their eyes with their virgin hands; certainly the altar of the goddess trembled, when her priestess was brought to bed, and the terrified flame sank under its own ashes."

Ovid assumes that the reader knows that fire is used heavily in death rituals to drive away the dead. Silvia is a Vestal Virgin, a tender of the holiest fire in Rome. Ordinarily an upright torch signifies life, the first light a child sees when born is represented by this holy fire. Life is the opposite of death. So when the most sacred fire in Rome burns down beneath its coals... that is seriously significant. Also a bit of foreshadowing because the events of the twins' lives will lead them to becoming half alive and half dead, half mortal and half god.

"When Amulius learned of this, scorner of justice that he was (for he had vanquished his brother and robbed him of power), he ordered the twins to be sunk in the river. The water shrank from such a crime, and the boys were left on dry land. Who knows not that the infants throve on the milk of a wild beast, and that a woodpecker often brought food to the abandoned babes? Nor would I pass thee by in silence, Larentia, nurse of so great a nation, nor the help that thou didst give, poor Faustulus. Your honour will find its place when I come to tell of the Larentalia; that festival falls in December, the month dear to the mirthful spirits."

Amulius is the uncle King and he does not want rivals to his throne. He killed his brother, Silvia's father, and that fratricide automatically makes him the worst of villains. Now he moves to murder more family members because he is scum. Because he rejects the babies, they won't bear the family name and they won't be acknowledged as living beings.

River water, running water, represents the journey to the underworld in some cases--it really depends on the context in which it is used. The river refuses to murder the babies, meaning that they don't cross over yet. But the river does bring them to the She-Wolf, which begins their transformation into something other than human. Ovid assumes that readers know that drinking the milk of another person will make you also that person's child. To the point that milk-siblings were not permitted to marry. Drinking the milk of the She-Wolf will make these children officially half-wolf and therefore half-dead. Wolves symbolically represent the spirits of dead warriors. So not only are they half-dead... they are also set on a path that will make them great warriors.

Larenta is a figure that has survived to the modern day as St. Lucia, and Larentalia survives as the very creepy feast of St. Lucia. That hadn't happened yet as Ovid was writing so his Larenta was the human-ish woman who found and adopted Romulus & Remus and raised them back into human society. A Larenta who may also have connections to an Artemis-like goddess of transformation and monsters. I'll have to do a separate blog post on Larenta & St. Lucia, there's too much to unpack there.

"Thrice six years old was the progeny of Mars,"

I don't know if it is relevant but with Ovid peppering everything with massive amounts of symbolism, I feel like mentioning here that:

3 + 6 = 9

3 x 6 = 18 (which is 2 nines)

It might be a bit of a stretch but it was something I noticed. Number symbolism often plays a major role in Mediterranean life. 9 is frequently used as the number of transformation, specifically in lycanthropy traditions, which is why it stood out to me.

"Amulius fell, pierced by the sword of Romulus, and the kingdom was restored to their aged grandfather."

The boys set right the wrong that was done to their grandfather, Silvia's father. Making peace between the dead and the living.

"Mars was the god to be revered by Latium, for that he is the patron of the sword; ‘twas the sword that won for a fierce race empire and glory."

Naturally, they made their dad the most important god in their new society. Ovid was being a bit of a stinker in driving home this historical point. By his time, the chief god rank of Rome had been given to Jupiter and the hierarchy of priests was being rewritten to reduce the influence of the hereditary old priesthoods (the Flamen). Supporting the traditional role of the Flamen was a political move and it probably wasn't well received when Emperor Augustus got wind of it--which may be why Fasti was never completed and Ovid was sent into exile.

"If you would convince yourself that the Kalends of March were really the beginning of the year, you may refer to the following proofs: the laurel-branch of the flamens, after remaining in its place the whole year, is removed (on that day), and fresh leaves are put in the place of honour; then the king’s door is green with the tree of Phoebus, which is set at it; and at thy portal, Old Chapel of the Wards, the same things is done; the withered laurel is withdrawn from the Ilian hearth, that Vesta also may make a brave show, dressed in fresh leaves. Besides ‘tis said that a new fire is lighted in her secret shrine, and the rekindled flame gains strength."

Not directly related to Romulus & Remus but I would like to point out that by going into such detail as to why March is the old traditional beginning of the new year cycle, Ovid is also telling us that February is the month when the year itself dies. This provides a bit of support for some of the other posts I have made about February, the twins, and the symbolism of the Roman wolf cult. March was the opening of war season and it was also the beginning of the agricultural cycle--of which Mars was closely tied to through his marriage to Ceres. As the sons of Mars, this means that Romulus & Remus had symbolic roles to play throughout the full year--February and March especially.

Now we are going to switch over to Book 4 of Fasti, starting at the 807 mark on Theoi.

"Already the brother of Numitor had suffered punishment, and all the shepherd folk were subject to the twins. The twins agreed to draw the swains together and found a city; the doubt was which of the two should found it. Romulus said, “There needs no contest. Great faith is put in birds; let’s try the birds.” The proposal was accepted. One of the two betook him to the rocks of the wooded Palatine; the other hied at morn to the top of the Aventine. Remus saw six birds; Romulus saw twice six, one after the other: they stood by their compact, and Romulus was accorded the government of the city."

In this part, Ovid establishes that the origin of the Roman people come from shepherd stock. This establishes links to goat-based pastoral traditions that form some of the oldest Roman rituals, combining both Sabine and Etruscan practices. Mars' mother, Juno, was based upon the Etruscan/ Sabine goat-milk goddess Uni--whom I mentioned in another post. Birds are also associated with prophecy and, once again, that Artemis-Larentia-St. Lucy like goddess of transformation.

The brothers are trying to figure out who should be the leader of their people and the decide to perform a bird-based divination. Remus is always depicted as the brother destined to belong wholly to the underworld. The number 6 has many meanings, two of which are disaster or death. Not as bad as 13 BUT 6 is also a lesser number to 12, which is the number of perfection and wholeness. Remus is made to to be simultaneously the death brother and the lesser brother to Romulus.

"Glad at the augury, the citizens laid the foundations, and in short time the new wall stood. The work was urged on by Celer, whom Romulus himself had named and said, “Celer, be this thy are; let no man cross the walls nor the trench which the share hath made: who dares to do so, put him to death.” Ignorant of this, Remus began to mock the lowly walls and say, “Shall these protect the people?” And straightway he leaped across them. Instantly Celer struck the rash man with a shovel. Covered with blood, Remus sank on the stony ground. When the king heard of this, he smothered the springing tears and kept his grief locked up within his breast. He would not weep in public; he set an example of fortitude, and “So fare,” quoth he, “the foe who shall cross my walls.”

Aw, poor Remus. Doomed from the start. In this story, Romulus' hands are not stained with the blood of his own brother and thus Romulus maintains his purity and connection to life. That is Celer's only purpose. Remus crosses the wall and is killed for it. Remus was always meant to be the dead brother and Remus' descendants were always meant to symbolize death. Remus crossing the wall here is also death crossing the wall to invade Rome and that can't be allowed to happen, not even in jest. Not even from your own kin. There are several dance-based rituals in Rome that took place this time of year that pitted stand ins for the two brothers against each other. Remus' place in those rituals is to represent the death of the fields while Romulus' purpose is to secure the safety of those same fields. The brother love each other and are both important but only one can live.

" Yet he granted funeral honours, and could no longer bear to check his tears, and the affection which he had dissembled was plain to see. When they set down the bier, he gave it a last kiss, and said, “Snatched from they brother, loath to part, brother, farewell!” With that he anointed the body before committing it to the flames. Faustulus and Acca, her mournful hair unbound, did the same. Then the Quirites, though not yet known by that name, wept for the youth, and last of all a light was put the pyre, wet with their tears."

In this we see the funeral of Remus and the love his family still had for him. Also, this is why the dead do not like fire.

"On that day, as I was returning from Nomentum to Rome, a white-robed crowd clocked the middle of the road. A flamen was on his way to the grove of ancient Mildew (Robigo), to throw the entrails of a dog and the entrails of a sheep into the flames. Straightway I went up to him to inform myself of the rite. Thy flamen, O Quirinus, pronounced these words: “Thou scaly Mildew, spare the sprouting corn, and let he smooth top quiver on the surface of the ground. O let the crops, nursed by the stars of a propitious sky, grow till they are ripe for the sickle. No feeble power is thine: the corn on which thou hast set thy mark, the sad husbandman gives up for lost. Nor winds, nor showers, nor glistening frost, that nips the sallow corn, harm it so much as when the sun warms the wet stalks; then, dread goddess, is the hour to wreak thy wrath. O spare, I pray, and take thy scabby hands from off the harvest! Harm not the tilth; ‘tis enough that thou hast the power to harm. Grip not the tender crops, but rather grip the hard iron. Forestall the destroyer. Better that thou shouldst gnaw at swords and baneful weapons. There is no need of them: the world is at peace. Now let the rustic gear, the rakes, and the hard hoe, and the curved share be burnished bright; but let rust defile the arms, and when one essays to draw the sword from the scabbard, let him feel it stick from long disuse. But do not thou profane the corn, and ever may the husbandman be able to pay his vows to thee in thine absence.”

This establishes the role the Quinctiliani (descendants of Romulus) play in the agricultural cycle. As the husband of Ceres, Mars protects the fields. This is physical and warlike in some instances, but also spiritual and ritualistic, as in this case. The robigo, or red spot, reference relates to a type of plant fungus that could wreck an entire crop. This prayer is intended to divert the plant plague from the soil and leaves onto implements of iron, transferring the red spot into a red rust. Mars was a protector of the fields first and a warrior second and this prayer reinforces that idea very much. Stating clearly that is it preferable for a sword to stick in its sheath from disuse rather than for the grain to be profaned with illness.
