Another October has come and gone but this month, I took note pause and participated in things Filipino. We went to @filamfest in San Diego, ate Filipino Food, and my kids learned historical facts from me. Here's a visual for some of the things I told them: Mommy was born in the 🇵🇭 Philippines and her house had chickens. Mommy and others use 🌂 more for ☀️ days than ☔️ as it is too hot and and don't want to get tanned. No slippers inside the house ever, only outside. We played and bathed in the warm rain water. Coconut 🌴 🌴are plentiful and drinking them out of its shell is common. Pineapples 🍍 are common there too, along with mangos and jackfruit. We had these trees over our house. Mommy moved to the other side of the world 🌎 to a tiny apartment when she was 5. This was partly possible because of relatives that have and were serving in the US Navy. Mommy has been in the USA 🇺🇸 for over 30 years and now an American citizen. Mommy is blessed to be in America and an American with my Filipino heritage. I finally got to meet this gorgeous #diwata @halohalo_mixmix at the #filamfest @filamfest in San Diego. It was great talking to you my love! I wish I had the time to go and see @_fabnetwork_ 😭 but this is only the beginning! We must come together and stand up for what it means to truly be free. Freedom and equality for some, means that there is oppression and inequality for others. Our community has our own issues of race and discrimination that we must confront. From our own internalized racism towards ourselves, to how we view other groups of people. We must take a hard look in the mirror and ask if we are part of the problem, or part of the solution. We must have those uncomfortable conversations with our family and friends. Racism is racism and we must work to end it. We Filipinas/os/x share a space with our black sisters and brothers in this American Diaspora. While the tide of racism has impacted both of our communities, the boats we find ourselves in have been confronted with different and unequal challenges. We spent some time at @filamfest today and the family picked this one for lunch as we can see the all the grilling they were doing. It was delicious (pancit bowl and a chicken bowl with red rice) and everyone was happy. Proud of my FilAmFest for their dedication and their commitment to honoring the culture along with my kuya Virgil & Chris. I passed by kuya's grave afterwards to drop off a program.
