kiba wolfsrain and johnny are two very similar people and i had to draw about it. both incredibly prideful/soulful individuals with singular devotion to their ideals often at a cost, both 'leaders' in a sense that start out not caring at all for their followers, that become much more tempered and changed through an experience with death. theres also the song 'could you bite the hand' from the wolfs rain ost that is literally something johnny couldve written word for word, and the op stray fits well for both of these characters. i think its cool to muse on how these are both kinda anachronistic characters or characters that stick out and fight against the current of urban despair and decay in their respective worlds

Going buckwild at the way Hilda The Series portrays adulthood and loneliness. Kaisa has no one to go to to ask for help getting the due book back, even though all it would take was someone she could minimally ask to knock on an elderly lady’s door and ask for a favour; she’s in the library after hours, is shown to have no allies aside from the woman who raised her and who she lost contact with. Johanna is only ever seen working or caring for Hilda, and her lack of a life aside from those two activities is pointed out by her own daughter when she thinks that this is going so far as to affect their relationship. The bell keeper lives alone in a small cabin on the edge of town, barely within city limits and away from everyone, a house barely even inhabitable and clearly only a place to sleep and eat. He works a solitary job and he’s the only one in the town still working it, meaning he’s probably overworked and forced to pull inhumanly long shifts. Victoria hyperfocused so hard on her projects that whatever friends she had before - and she must have had some from college time at least - lost contact with her, and she never made any other connections in Trolberg, anything that would tie her to the city and it’s inhabitants and make it so it wasn’t worth it to live by herself at the top of a hill. Even when that was over, she still chose to isolate herself somewhere abandoned and keep what was essentially another machine she’d built as her source of company, something she could understand and control instead of an unpredictable human being. Gerda works a job she likes but is shown to be disregarded by the person she works the most around, her abilities and intellect thrown aside for the good of someone she has to bear because of a hierarchy she was forced to accept in order to keep working. She’s appreciated by the town, but other than the main characters, we don’t see anyone paying her any mind when they don’t need something from her.

Meanwhile no kid has ever been alone in Trolberg. The mean kids are a group, the good kids are a group, even the gloomy teenage girls are a group. One of nightmare inducing entities, but a group nonetheless. All children in that world seem to operate on a ‘no man left behind’ code, looking out for each other even if they aren’t exactly fans of one another, helping even grown ups without asking why and working together. And this logic seems to extend to the adults who work around children too; especially the Raven Leader, who we see that through the children works as a vital part of the community and a way through which it comes together.

This isn’t very articulate but do you see the point? Do you see how clever that is? That a show about growing up has these themes? You can be magical, kind, strong, intelligent, competent, but none of that will make you truly happy if you don’t keep the most important thing from childhood? If you don’t keep your friendships, your bonds, something to tie you down to your reality and your community? The adults in the show all made their choices, and it’s okay to want to be alone, we all need it and some more than others (this is coming from someone who needs it a lot), but isolating yourself completely is the one thing that will make growing pains truly painful. I’m just so emotional over it. It’s so subtle and so clever considering the whole Mountain King plot that Hilda is willing to change species because she feels detached from her main relationships and surroundings. I love this show so much.

hogh i was just clicking around etsy and came across this artist with an anthro furry style that catapulted me back to my deviantart days, the kind of art i would stare at for hours being like 'thats what i want to draw like. this person GETS it'. like a sense memory more vivid than anything i've felt in years. nostalgia disney fucking wishes it could capitalize on

i always imagined the internet as a sand castle on the shore, the tide constantly washing over it, seeking to increase entropy as the universe does. We work every day to combat it, replacing hard drives, fixing server errors, fighting back DDOS attacks, and paying for ever increasing amounts of electricity. But one day, maintaining it will not be cost effective. The average hard drive will fail in 6 years after constant use. If not being maintained, the sea will seek to reclaim all that you hold dear immediately. While everything rots, digital rot happens so quickly, so easily, and once it's not profitable, the rot sets in so quick you didn't even have time to process it, much less archive it somewhere else. the internet is so, so large, and keeping it alive requires so, so much. Forbes is quoted as saying Americans use 4 million Gigabytes of data every minute. Now imagine how much it costs, not in terms of profit but labor, hard drives, and electricity to store all of thatTo keep that data alive.

"This new deletion policy is terrible for preservation of archival media" that's the point, bro. That's explicitly the point, though they'll never admit it. Major social media platforms straight up do not want archival media to be a thing – it disrupts their business model by existing, and it's hard to monetise. In their perfect world, media more than 90 days old would vanish in a puff of smoke and be irrecoverably forgotten.

actually being 19 is a horrible experience; the self righteousness of whatever half-baked identity you cobbled together in your tiny nothing pond of a town fighting for relevance against the raging tide of evolving responsibilities, environments and peer groups, culminating to an ultimately underwhelming end of adolescence as you spend those final precious moments trying to weaponize whatever language and behaviors you have acquired as an adult to insulate what you have left of your childhood. in becoming an actual adult you like however, you may find yourself going back to being 19 and doing everything right this time around, because as it turns out, your music taste was immaculate and walking around at night will save you.

To any USAmerican queer and trans person right now, I don't know if this will help, but please try to remember that there are queer and trans people living, surviving, and even thriving in countries where they have NEVER had rights. I live in a very religious and very conservative country and progress is slow, but it is happening. Same sex marriage has never been legal here in a way that the government will accept, but we have local governments who are at least starting to legalize medical and property rights for same sex partners. We have local governments supporting trans rights protections. We have more and more local celebrities and influencers who have braved the barrage of potential hate to live their truth and have found communities that support and uplift them.

People here have been fighting for a long time and are continuing to fight and celebrating any small progress that we achieve, even if the tides are against us. And do you know why? Because we have seen that it can be done! American media is so prolific here and we see people like us on our TV shows and movies and even news channels. Conservatives here love to blame "the Americans" for introducing "these types of thoughts" (aka just letting people fucking exist as they are) to our country. You guys did that. None of what you guys have now (as little as it is) would have happened if people in the past just laid down and gave up.

I have nothing to add. Thank you for caring about us enough to send this. It's the first and only thing that's comforted me this morning.
