March 2, 2011 - Still Alive Raced from 2013-2014 Thoroughbred Mare - United States
Here we have yet another horse named after.... that.... book series. The Gold part of her name is from her sire, My Golden Song.
Fifty Shades won her debut race, and then went on to win the Debutante Stakes in her next outing. In her last two year old start, she technically finished fourth in the G2 Adirondack Stakes, but was shifted up to third when the actual winner Who's In Town bumped into both Designer Legs and Thank You Marylou and ended up disqualified.
When she returned to the track at three, she won the Two Altazano Stakes. Then it was on to a second place finish to Untapable in the G2 Fair Grounds Oaks. In May she got her final win, the G3 Eight Belles Stakes. She raced three more times in 2014, finishing fourth in the Acorn Stakes and Test Stakes, and her final race was a fifth in the Dogwood Stakes.
Several days after her run in the Dogwood, he leg swelled up and an ultrasound revealed a nasty tear in her left fore suspensory. She was retired effective immediately after the injury was discovered. She now resides to begin her career as a broodmare at Valor Farm where she was born and raised, and was due to deliver a foal by Tapit earlier this year. Fifty Shades was named Texas Horse of the Year and Texas Champion 3-Year-Old Filly for 2014.
Sire: My Golden Song Dam: Hadif Cat (by Hadif)
Breeder: Clarence Scharbauer Jr. Owners: Douglas Scharbauer Trainers: W. Bret Calhoun
9 Races 4 wins 1 Places 1 Shows
Earnings: $420,521

Texas' Champion Two-year-old Filly of 2013 has been retired after an ultrasound revealed a significant tear in her left fore suspensory. She ran in the Dogwood Stakes at Churchill Downs on 20 September and came back sound after the race. However, her foreleg swelled up a few days later. Announced on 30 October 2014. Read more here.
Fiftyshadesofgold, daughter of My Golden Song and Hadif Cat, who ran in the same colours as Alysheba in the late eighties, was owned and raced by  Douglas Scharbauer Douglas, whose late father, Clarence, bred her. She was born and raised at Scharbauer's Valor Farm near Pilot Point, Texas.
“She was certainly one of the best I’ve ever trained. She was the total package - a grand individual, was very fast and could carry it, a great mind and a big heart to go with it,” said trainer Bret Calhoun.
“Of course I’m disappointed that her racing career is over, but more than that, I’m so glad that she is sound and can go on to the breeding shed ... Given her talent and looks, I think she will make a great broodmare,” said Douglas.
Happy and long retirement, Fifty. <3

Fiftyshadesofgold digging in to take the Eight Belles Stakes was a highlight for me this weekend. I like this filly a ton and think she'll be tough at Saratoga in a few months in the nicer sprint filly races.

watching the races at Saratoga...
Man, Fiftyshadesofgold is a beast. It's not often 2-year-old fillies make their ponies look tiny.
Who's in Town is so bouncy!
I really like Thank You Marylou.

I'd been reading up on Fiftyshadesofgold, but never actually watched her run.  I just watched her Debutante.
Holy shit.

Alysheba's Legacy
As she swept under the wire eight lengths in front of her nearest rival, juvenile filly Fiftyshadesofgold brought back memories for many racing fans
The  last time a horse carried the blue and white checked colors of the Scharbauer family to victory in a stakes race at Churchill Downs was 1988. That horse was Alysheba and the race was the Breeder's Cup Classic
Fiftyshadesofgold, who can trace back to Alysheba through her dam, won her debut race at Lone Star Park last month by 10 lengths. In today's Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs, she repeated the formula with a romping 8 length win, the second largest margin of victory in the history of the race
Hope to be seeing more of this lovely gray carrier of 'Sheba's legacy!
