In the aftermath of the worst news ever, this week I want to suggest a few WIPs!

Anthony J. Crowley has been writing a column about queer facts in The Guardian for 15 years, but lately he has lost his touch. One day, when he’s struggling to meet a deadline, he hears a story from a man in a pub, and he writes an unflattering article about Aziraphale Fell, a mechanic who has apparently left a number of fiancés at the altar in the small town of Tadfield, earning the unfortunate nickname of ‘The Runaway Groom’. When Aziraphale, who’s getting married again, has Crowley fired, the journalist has no other option but to travel to Tadfield in pursuit of vindication. But he will find so much more than that. A human ‘Runaway Bride’ AU.

It wasn’t so bad, misinterpreting the bookseller’s intentions. Sure, Aziraphale had a partner, and sure, Crowley had gotten his hopes up for a meet-cute straight out of one of his romance novels. No chance that Aziraphale would discover that he’d been the inspiration for N. Ashtoreth’s newest love interest. No possibility that Crowley’s creative gamble could come back to haunt him. ***** “Shit!” Crowley swore as the manuscript pages fluttered to the ground. “You?” Aziraphale asked with a laugh. “What are the odds of bumping into each other twice? I found this piece again yesterday and I still think it's really cool. I haven't seen a lot of fanart of Maerwald, so it's cool to see him represented, and it's really cool to see all three Watchers lined up like that, with all of their respective Themes and Symbols. Just. Idk, Watchers are cool, and this art made me appreciate that a little more.

Fanfic #1: The Way The Story Goes by @dragonologist-phd (Pillars Of Eternity)

The prince was born with a dragon. Dragons and the reasoning behind them were something of a mystery in the kingdom. Nobody knew where they came from, or why the hatchlings only appeared in the company of newborn royalty. Nobody knew how they picked their companions. None of these questions were all that important, in the end. What mattered was that there were certain types of stories that started with a dragon, and there was a way these stories were supposed to go. The king and queen turned their backs for one minute, and suddenly there was a tiny, iridescent dragon curled up next to their son in his crib. That was the beginning of the story.

A Pillars of Eternity fairytale AU where Iselmyr is a dragon and Aloth is her prince. It's a cute take on these two and I had fun reading it, so now I'm inflicting this fic on you all! If you're in a mood for a fun one-shot, I definitely recommend it.

Fanfic #2: In Lothering by @heniareth (Dragon Age: Origins)

“Now, now, is that a way to answer a friendly greeting?” The bandit captain clicked his tongue as his men tightened their ranks behind him. “A simple ten silver and you’re free to move. Not so bad, eh?” Astala smiled. There was no way in the Void these shem would squeeze several months’ worth of rent out of them.

I'm slowly making my way through this fic!! I really like how it slows down and lingers on all the small problems the DA:O party faces in the early stages of their travel, and the different perspectives they all have on these problems. If you like stories that combine great characterization with attention to Logistics and the practical side of adventuring, you're going to have fun reading this one.

Fanfic #3: the cracked and the cared for by @curiouslavellan (Dragon Age: Inquisition)

Risk was mitigated through planning. He picked this room just for the fact that it had so many possible exits. He kept so many different weapons close to hand to give himself options. He had been trained to wake at the slightest indication of danger, and to respond in the same moment. No one would be sneaking up on him here and living through the attempt.  Bull knew all of this. None of it made him feel any better at the moment. None of it helped him sleep. He didn’t think he could bring himself to take up any of the weapons. He knew he wouldn’t be able to get his head around fighting hand-to-hand in time. Retreating would be easier to handle, mentally, but every time he moved more than an inch, Halveri made this pitiful little whimper that he couldn't stand. So he just went still again and tried not to think about the fact that the most magical person he had ever seen in his life was currently asleep on his chest.

I read this fic A While ago, but I reread it recently and, yup. It's still good. I don't know what is it, but the Bull POV in this fic is just really fun to read: it's the perfect balance of doubt and strategizing and picking his own brain apart and the vulnerability of being attached to the Inquisitor and. AAAAA. anyway, it's a good fic, I recommend it if you're in the mood for a character study that makes you Feel Things.

Fanfic #4: THE FURY OF A SHATTERED MIRROR by ASpooky (Disco Elysium x Slay The Princess)

YOU - How did I get here? THE NARRATOR - You walked, I presume. You've probably come a very long way and endured quite a number of trials to get here, but given the magnitude of the task still left before you, it won't do to get cold feet now. You can take a well-deserved rest after you slay her. ENDURANCE [Easy: Success] - You *aren't* tired. Not even a little. You could run a couple miles right now without breaking a sweat. PAIN THRESHOLD [Medium: Success] - Even at a jog, the worst you should feel through the thin haze of painkillers is a dull ache. It's probably not a good idea to start running on a bum leg, but when has that ever stopped you before? PHYSICAL INSTRUMENT - There's still time. The sun hasn't risen yet, which means you can get in back-to-back morning jogs if you start *NOW*.

I actually don't know if this fanfic needs a recommendation because apparently it's so popular that at least one (1) youtube video was made about it, but I've been reading it and I want to talk about it, so in the rec list it goes.

If you have even a surface level familiarity with Disco Elysium and Slay The Princess, I recommend checking this out. The amount of attention of detail and effort that has gone into this fic is amazing and it's really clear why it's so beloved. The fic uses a CSS theme that looks like the Disco Elysium UI, and the author has gone the extra mile to play with the layout in pretty fun ways when it comes to the Disco Elysium voices-in-your-head and the StP voices-in-your-head interacting. And I haven't even said anything about the writing yet, but the writing is also really good. The character voices are great, the jokes land, and the story is really interesting and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Fic Rec Friday Intro and FAQ

I can’t do multiple posts with elaborate reviews/commentary today. I just wanted to say that over the last few months, while I was grappling with this overwhelmingly depressive sense of doom, profound sadness, hopelessness, and apathy, reading fanfiction was one of the most effective types of escapism I engaged in. 

So, here are the fics that I have been reading, keeping track of, and loving:

Almost anything @bardocksheadband-fanfics, but especially:

1. The Re-Education of Mr. Almehen

Fandom: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Pairing: Nashuri

Summary: “Namor's life changes in all the right ways the day his student's aunt picks him up from school.”

What I Like About It: It may seem lame af to describe something as “tasteful” and mean it as a compliment, not a slight. I mean, this is a Suga Mama Shuri and a Baby Boy Namor (whom I call Ch’ah in my head) but not in the way you think. It’s a rom-com! It’s sexy, it’s funny, it’s adorable. And these two kinky assholes are in love! Also, he’s a kindergarden teacher; a good one. The way he is written with these kids just makes my ovaries quiver.

2. Filthy Mouth

Fandom: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Pairing: Nashuri

Summary: Single father Namor goes on his first blind date and gets his world rocked.

What I Like About It: Almost the same as above, but in reverse! Though more of a straightforward relationship dynamic, not a kept man/woman scenario at all. More of a freak in sheets, lady in the streets situation. But again, there is love and devotion, as there always is with this pairing (well, when writers stay away from the darker dynamics of the ship). This is absolutely amazing. Superbly written, well-paced, tonally balanced, funny, sexy, and somewhat dramatic but not anxiety-inducing. Like, literally perfect.

Fandom: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Pairing: Nashuri/Loshuri

Summary: Shuri’s world unravels when she discovers her husband Namor’s infidelity, leading to a heart-wrenching divorce. Amidst the chaos, she finds solace in Loki, a charming entrepreneur with a complicated past of his own. As their unexpected romance flourishes, Shuri grapples with co-parenting challenges, the complexities of new love, and unresolved feelings.

What I Like About It: I mean, I didn’t think that a Love Triangle between Shuri, Loki, and Namor would be so intriguing. That it would be utterly confusing as to who you want to root for. That you would feel your heart beat for the plight of each character. There’s so much at stake, but especially the happiness of a little boy caught in the middle of the mess adults can make of their lives. It’s drama personified, and I live for each installment. Plus, Loki is written so well here, it’s hard not to root for him.

Summary: A year after her mother’s death, Shuri burns her mourning clothes on the beach in Haiti and wakes up not only back in Talokan, but also back in time. Given the chance to do things differently, can she prevent her mother’s death and convince Namor of a peaceful alliance?

What I Like About It: THIS fic is everything I want in a Nashuri. It is another “What If” scenario, mapped and tread carefully. We’ve all imagined what could have been if it had been different, as Namor lamented on the beach that day just after he speared the Black Panther, right before she almost killed him and forced him to yield to her. Go read this! It is so satisfying!

It's Fan Fiction Friday and today I want to make two recommendations.

The first is my dearest @hermiola (who's lately completed her Pretty Woman AU 'Take a Little Love From Me'). I just re-read When Hell Freezes Over - a one shot in two chapters - and it's lovely and funny and Dantesque and Crowley is an almost entirely coded Peter Vincent 😁

(Crowley is a magician with a new Inferno-inspired show opening in London, Aziraphale the angelic-looking journalist who's supposed to interview him. Crowley immediately tries his best to ruffle his feathers. Much to his surprise, though, Aziraphale isn't as pearl-clutchy as he looks. Things go as you'd expect.)

It's one of the first post S2 fiction about Good Omens I stumbled upon, I've been invested since the first chapters.

It has been three years since Aziraphale left for Heaven; and The Metatron's evil plans are beginning to kick into gear. However, one certain angel risks everything to interfere and buy some time. Now, Crowley and Aziraphale, with the invaluable assistance of Muriel and a very, very special young woman, have to figure out exactly what it is The Metatron plans on doing and stop him before it's too late; all the while attempting to navigate their impossible emotional labyrinth.

I have read the entire catalogues of both of these authors and every fic is amazing, but I think these two are my favorite even if I'm too shy to really talk to authors I admire, so I'm thankful for Fandom Friday so I can still let them know I love them

Another one from the incredible world of Hiddlesworth today. And by the same author as the last ones too. What can I say? They really do this pair right.

Every time I read one of this writer’s stories, I feel as if I just lived an entire lifetime’s worth of romance. It’s deeper than the ocean. More expansive than any sea. And this one is no exception. The first-person perspective is very unique amongst my favorites, and it lends this fic its own personal style, which I appreciate. Both Chris and Tom are characterized so well, I feel like I’ve known them forever. Especially Tom, that sweet, stuttering boy.

This particular AU setting isn’t too fanciful or outlandish. Just teenagers. Ones with very painful emotional issues that they need to work on. Teenagers that find in each other almost everything they needed. A bit codependent? Perhaps. But in fanfic, it’s all good. In fanfic, a person finding their soulmate seems easy, lol. I think these two are gonna be just fine.

Oh yeah, and the smut is freaking AMAZING. Truly truly great. It always is.

Next week: how about some gay lawyers again? This one travels a path very familiar to fans of the pairing: it’s a ‘Miles finds out about the disbarment’ story. Featuring some absolute goddamn tenderness between these two dorks. And very comforting sex. Everything you could possibly need, lol.

Friday Knight Fights is an audio drama podcast that follows modern-day college students discovering that they are the reincarnations of characters from Arthurian Legend. This is my review.

Arthur Padron was just an average teenager trying to enjoy his gap year before college. Then he met a girl named Lynn, and touched the magic sword she had with her. Arthur soon discovered that he is the modern-day reincarnation of King Arthur himself. Lynn turns out to be the reincarnation of the great sorcerer Merlin, and the sword is Excalibur itself. They’re also joined by Elliot, who is the reincarnation of Lancelot. The modern reincarnations of the Knights of the Round Table are scattered across modern-day America. Arthur, Lynn, and Elliot must set off on a cross-country roadtrip to recruit the reincarnated knights. However, though magic is returning to the world, so too are dark forces. It’s sure to be an adventure of Arthurian proportions.

There have been a few other works that utilize the premise of Arthurian characters reincarnating in the modern-day. However, it is not how many times a premise has been done, but how well you execute it, that truly matters. Personally, I’d say that @fridayknightfights did a pretty good job handling its premise.

Season one is split into two alternating parts. One part takes place during everyone’s freshmen year at college, while the other takes place one year earlier, and shows how everyone met. Each episode will features scenes relating to both plot lines. Usually, the freshmen year plot line starts off the episode, and then we transition to the one year earlier plot line. Also, in case you’re wondering, the sword on the cover art is Excalibur, and the red threads are the red threads of destiny. 

One of the biggest strengths of Friday Knight Fights is its absolutely stellar cast. I could tell from my first listen that the cast were all extremely talented and hard-working. I don’t know if any of them have prior experience in voice acting, but I see very bright futures for them all. Now, having said all of this, I need to do a bit of tough love. The audio quality, while overall passable, can have some noticeable inconsistencies at times. There will be sometimes when characters will have a noticeable background hiss accompany their dialogue. Also, there’s always a little bit at the end of each episode, after the credits, that feels like it was incidental recordings left in by accident. So, definitely want to even out those audio levels and remove that background hiss. However, I have full confidence that the Friday Knight Fights crew will be able to iron-out these issues.

There’s a lot of really fun little nods and references to the original Arthurian Legends. For example, Gerry is the reincarnation of Gawain, and he hates the color green. This is an obvious nod to Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. In other nods, Carlos and Delilah are the reincarnations of Kay and Bedivere, and are hinted to have feeling for each other. Very interesting, as Kay and Bedivere were quite close in the original legends. I also love that one episode took place at Medieval Times Chicago.

Season one of Friday Knight Fights brought lots of urban fantasy fun with an Arthurian twist. I can’t wait to see what season two brings us.
