Another one from the incredible world of Hiddlesworth today. And by the same author as the last ones too. What can I say? They really do this pair right.

Every time I read one of this writer’s stories, I feel as if I just lived an entire lifetime’s worth of romance. It’s deeper than the ocean. More expansive than any sea. And this one is no exception. The first-person perspective is very unique amongst my favorites, and it lends this fic its own personal style, which I appreciate. Both Chris and Tom are characterized so well, I feel like I’ve known them forever. Especially Tom, that sweet, stuttering boy.

This particular AU setting isn’t too fanciful or outlandish. Just teenagers. Ones with very painful emotional issues that they need to work on. Teenagers that find in each other almost everything they needed. A bit codependent? Perhaps. But in fanfic, it’s all good. In fanfic, a person finding their soulmate seems easy, lol. I think these two are gonna be just fine.

Oh yeah, and the smut is freaking AMAZING. Truly truly great. It always is.

Next week: how about some gay lawyers again? This one travels a path very familiar to fans of the pairing: it’s a ‘Miles finds out about the disbarment’ story. Featuring some absolute goddamn tenderness between these two dorks. And very comforting sex. Everything you could possibly need, lol.

1) How old were you when you first starting writing fan fiction?

21) Tell me about another writer(s) who you admire? What is it about them that you admire?

@gefionne is someone I admire a lot. They have this beautiful way of writing that drew me into their stories and made me emote in ways that I very rarely do. Their Kylux fic ‘Flyboys’ is one that I have returned to time and time again because it is genuinely such a treat to read, and the world that they’ve built there is one that, even now just thinking about it, makes my chest ache and my heart yearn.

On that same note, the same eternal praise goes to @aozu whom I have long admired from the beginnings of me getting into the Nirvana in Fire fandom. Their Chiyan!AU rewrite of the show, ‘a rose by any other name would smell as sweet’, is one of the very, very rare WIPs that I keep up with and pester her to finish on a semi regular basis I love you baby girl only because it’s so beautifully heartbreakingly written and absolutely haunted my every waking thought. And still does on the regular, if I’m to be very honest. I absolutely consumed her NIF works and I’m not ashamed to admit that I have her on user subscription and die a happy death each and every time she posts something new. It’s because of her that I got into writing the ZY/JY pairing, and I have not regretted a single day since. I’m also a very lucky ducky because I can now count Tricia as someone I can talk to about a whole bunch of things, so there’s that as a bonus from my admiration of her xx

In a very rare show of RPFs, I am huge admirer of furiedheart’s Chris Hemsworth/Tom Hiddleston fics. A favourite of mine is ‘Of Earth, Eternal’, that left me absolutely bereft once I was done reading it. It was hauntingly sublime and exquisite in many different ways. I couldn’t quite believe that I was reading an RPF and not an original fiction because man, did I devour their works after reading that first one. I highly recommend their fics. They have such a magical way with words.

RPF and Victorian AU. Two great things that are better together!

The slow burn in this one is absolutely delicious. As slow as any good Victorian romance should be. Complete with our flustered (and a bit stuffy) protagonist, and his slightly more free-spirited but also reserved love interest. Also, gay. No wonder it takes them a few chapters, lol.

I love both of their characterizations so much. Tom is, as per usual, an absolute sweetheart. And though Chris is far more taciturn, he turns out to be just as adorable as Tom, in his own way. Every point of their romance - the awkward beginning, first initial steps, misunderstanding/“break up,” getting back together, happy ending - feels real. I understand perfectly well why things happen as they do, and none of it feels like a contrived plot of a romance story (even though… it is).

Once again, this writer’s unsung strength is their OCs. There’s only about three in this fic, two are mentioned posthumously (and featured in a diary), and one is only in like three scenes. But they have such personality. I really feel like I know them, almost as well as the two main characters. I will never not love a few good Original Characters.

And of course, can’t ignore the supernatural elements of this story! So good, and I’m not just talking about the haunted house. I won’t spoil it, though! It’s like adding spices to an already lovely dish - adds a depth of flavor that is just peerless.

Absolutely lovely.

Next Week: Spacedogs time! This one is really nice, in a relative sense of that word. Yeah, it has Adam not feeling well, but sick!Adam also means protective and caretaking!Nigel, which will never ever go amiss with me.

Another lovely Hiddlesworth piece by way of furiedheart. One of their shorter works, honestly, but no less amazing.

I love the variations in characterization in these stories. In every version, Tom and Chris are slightly different, and yet still demonstrably the same. They also use story-specific pet names for each other usually. A little touch I adore when I see it.

One of my favorite things about this writer’s fic are their OCs and side characters. The main one in this story is Tom’s grandmother. Such a great character! It’s really easy to get attached to her, which makes certain elements of this fic even more heartbreaking. I said in my preview last week that it’s about Alzheimer’s, and all the pain encompassed within, and it is. And with such a sweet character like Patricia… it hurts, man.

Given that this one is shorter, the romance develops a bit faster, but it’s no less affecting. The gradual build towards intimacy is beautiful, and the smut is EVERYTHING. I adore this author’s love scenes so much.

If the last line doesn’t absolutely DESTROY you, we are very different people. It’s perfect. And devastating.

Oh boy, now we’re getting into it. The real juicy side of fanfic: RPF! Which, incidentally, shouldn’t be as big of a deal as it tends to be, in my opinion. A lot of the more vitriolic hate towards it seems to have tapered off these days. Or maybe I’m just a pro at avoiding negative people? Either way, I’m glad. For many reasons, but especially because this fic is so GOOD.

For me personally, the fact that it’s an AU helps ease off the RPF factor a great deal. Yeah, they’re still named Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth, but they’re not famous actors Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth, you know? I could imagine it as them playing characters who just so happen to share their names. But more importantly, the story. Incredible. A slow burn full of emotion. I have so many of this author’s Hiddlesworth fics saved because they have an unmatched ability at writing deep, meaningful AUs. I love the characterization of both Chris and Tom, and their relationship builds so believably, with several ups and downs. I especially love this version of Tom - so cold, but with a swirling maelstrom of emotions just waiting to be tapped. Preferably by a kind yet hunky doctor! And the smut is just glorious. Worth waiting for.

A masterpiece.

Next Week: Okay guys. This one’s not gonna be easy, seeing as how I haven’t read it in a long time (YEARS!), but when thinking of a good Arthur/Eames fic to mention, it was the first thing to come to mind. Most of my free time next week up until Friday is going to be spent re-reading all 231 chapters of it. That’s right - time for some HGTV goodness, because I’m looking for the Next Big Thing.
