Types of Fibroids and Fertility: What Women Should Know
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that form within or on the uterus, affecting many women at some point in their lives. These growths vary significantly in size, location, and symptoms. Understanding the types of fibroids can be essential in choosing the right treatment path for long-term relief. Let’s take a closer look at each type and its unique characteristics.
Understanding the Different Types of Fibroids
Fibroids, also known as myomas or leiomyomas, develop from the muscle tissue of the uterus. The main types of fibroids are based on their location, and each type can impact a woman’s health differently. Here's a breakdown:
Intramural Fibroids: The most common type of fibroid, intramural fibroids grow within the muscular wall of the uterus. As they grow, they can cause the uterus to enlarge, leading to symptoms such as pelvic pain, pressure, and heavy menstrual bleeding. Large intramural fibroids can also create discomfort by pressing against other pelvic organs.
Subserosal Fibroids: Subserosal fibroids grow on the outer surface of the uterus. They tend to enlarge outward, which can cause a visibly distended abdomen. These fibroids often produce symptoms such as pelvic pressure, back pain, and bloating. However, they are less likely to cause heavy bleeding since they do not impact the endometrial lining as directly as other types.
Submucosal Fibroids: Submucosal fibroids grow just beneath the lining of the uterus, often extending into the uterine cavity. Though they are less common, they are more likely to cause severe symptoms, including heavy menstrual bleeding and anemia. Due to their location, submucosal fibroids can impact fertility and increase the risk of miscarriage.
Pedunculated Fibroids: These fibroids grow on small stalks either inside or outside of the uterus. Pedunculated fibroids can become twisted, leading to severe pain and other complications. If they grow large, they can also produce a range of symptoms similar to other fibroids, depending on their location.
Cervical Fibroids: Though rare, cervical fibroids develop in the cervix rather than the uterus. These fibroids may cause discomfort during intercourse, heavy menstrual bleeding, and urinary issues. Since they are located in the narrow cervix area, they can interfere with normal uterine function.
Choosing the Right Treatment for Different Types of Fibroids
The type and location of fibroids significantly impact the choice of treatment. Common options include:
Medication: To manage symptoms such as heavy bleeding and pain, medications may help. However, they usually do not shrink fibroids.
Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE): UFE is a minimally invasive procedure that blocks the blood supply to fibroids, causing them to shrink.
Surgery: Procedures like myomectomy or hysterectomy may be recommended, particularly for large or multiple fibroids.

Understanding Uterine Fibroids: A Global Health Perspective
Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas or myomas, are one of the most common health issues affecting women worldwide, particularly during their reproductive years. These noncancerous tumors develop in the muscle tissue of the uterus and can vary greatly in size, shape, and location. While fibroids are generally benign, they can lead to a wide range of symptoms and complications, prompting women from different cultures and regions to seek appropriate treatment. From menstrual irregularities to pelvic discomfort, fibroids can significantly impact women's lives in diverse ways.
Causes of Fibroids
The exact cause of fibroids remains uncertain, but several factors contribute to their growth. Hormonal imbalances, especially high levels of estrogen and progesterone, are key drivers in the development of fibroids. Additionally, genetic factors, ethnicity, age, and lifestyle can all influence the likelihood of developing fibroids. For example, fibroids are more prevalent in women of African descent, highlighting the need for increased awareness and culturally sensitive approaches to treatment in various global communities.
Symptoms of Fibroids
Fibroids can present a wide range of symptoms that vary significantly from one woman to another. Some women may experience no symptoms, while others may endure considerable discomfort. Common symptoms include:
Menstrual Changes: Heavy bleeding, prolonged periods, and irregular cycles can severely affect a woman's quality of life.
Pelvic Pain and Pressure: A feeling of fullness, pressure, or pain in the pelvic area is often reported.
Frequent Urination or Bladder Issues: Larger fibroids may press against the bladder, causing frequent urination or difficulty emptying the bladder fully.
Backache or Leg Pain: Fibroids can exert pressure on nearby nerves, leading to pain in the back or legs.
Constipation or Bowel Discomfort: Pressure on the rectum from fibroids can cause constipation or bowel-related issues.
Enlarged Abdomen: In some cases, fibroids can cause the uterus to enlarge, leading to a noticeable increase in abdominal size.
Diagnosis of Fibroids
Diagnosing fibroids typically involves a pelvic examination, ultrasound, or MRI imaging. In certain cases, additional diagnostic tools such as hysteroscopy or saline infusion sonography are used to assess the size, number, and exact location of the fibroids. Accurate diagnosis is crucial to determine the most suitable treatment approach tailored to the patient’s needs.
Treatment Options
Treatment for fibroids is designed to relieve symptoms, prevent complications, and improve overall well-being. Options include:
Medications: Hormonal treatments such as birth control pills, gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists, and progestin-releasing IUDs can help control menstrual bleeding and reduce fibroid size.
Minimally Invasive Procedures: Uterine artery embolization (UAE), magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS), and laparoscopic or robotic-assisted myomectomy are advanced options that aim to remove or shrink fibroids while preserving the uterus.
Surgical Intervention: For severe symptoms or large fibroids, hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) may be recommended, especially for women who do not wish to have children in the future.
Watchful Waiting: In cases where fibroids are asymptomatic or cause only mild symptoms, regular monitoring may be sufficient.
A Global Call to Awareness and Action
Uterine fibroids present a significant challenge to women globally, yet advances in medical research and technology continue to expand the range of treatment options available. A personalized approach, where women actively engage in discussions with their healthcare providers, empowers them to make informed choices about their health. Fibroid रसौली का बिना ऑपरेशन इलाज by most advance method EMBOLIZATION
All You Need To Know About Uterine Fibroids In this video, I, Dr. Virender Sheorain, will talk about uterine fibroids. This is for those females who are surfing with the fibroid of the uterus, medically termed as #Leiomyoma. This is a non-cancerous disease. In this case, the fibroids can grow in and on your uterus, causing symptoms to appear and females to suffer greatly. Their sufferings can be broadly divided into two parts: - Excessive bleeding: that causes hemoglobin levels to drop. - Obstructive: if the fibroid size increases, the uterus size also increases, and this puts pressure on the urinary bladder or rectum, causing #urine and constipation problems or excessive bleeding. Uterine artery embolization is the most advanced technique. Though it was started 15 to 20 years ago, it is not that popular in #india . The reason being that the patient visits their local #physician or #gynecologist , and most of the patients are not educated about this procedure. The majority of patients who come to us are referred by their #doctors , relatives, or through social media and the internet. What should we know about fibroids? - Females will have a lot of pain during their periods (menstruation). - Excessive bleeding (menorrhagia). - Will have frequent urination. - Will have #constipation How are uterine fibroids diagnosed? Fibroids can be felt during a clinical examination by your gynecologist. Once they suspect the fibroids, they will ultimately refer you for an #ultrasound . Simple ultrasound can provide details about the size, number, and location of the fibroid to help plan its treatment. An MRI can be done to get more details. How are uterine fibroids treated? After diagnosis, there are three kinds of treatment options available for the uterus: - Medicine - Operation - Embolization #medicine : These are very temporary, have lots of side effects, and are given till you get menopause, i.e., you might be in your 40s or 50s, until your period stops and you are able to tolerate the medicines. Operation: A gynecologist recommends surgery either to remove the uterus or to remove the fibroids selectively, which is called a Myomectomy. Uterus removal has lots of side effects and hormonal effects. Sometimes patients even suffer depression as they lose their #organs . It is not a very good treatment option. #Myomectomy or selective removal of the fibroid with a #laparoscope can be a good option if performed in a good location and is easily removed. Embolization: The next option is embolization, in which a thin tube (catheter) is inserted through a blood vessel in the wrist and guided to the blood vessels that feed the fibroids of the #uterus, where tiny particles are injected to stop blood flow to the fibroids and dry them. The #symptoms then vanish or go away, and this #treatment has fewer side effects. The embolization does not need blood or #anesthesia ; you just need to stay in the hospital for 2 to 3 days for pain management. In young patients, when the fibroids are detected at an early age and they want to become #pregnant , they usually ask us whether they should opt for #surgery or embolization. In those cases, if they have one or two fibroids in a simple location, they should opt for myomectomy, but if they have multiple fibroids, embolization is a better option. It cannot be guaranteed that you can be #fertile or can conceive after surgery or embolization, but these are the only two options available. With this video, I want to spread awareness that if you or someone you know has a uterine fibroid, then do a search on the internet or watch videos of ours on uterine fibroid embolization or other similar ones. Meet a nearby #vascularsurgeon and discuss the pros and cons of it before deciding on the treatment plan. We will be happy to help you. Do visit us or raise your queries at the provided WhatsApp number.

#MythBusting July is Fibroid Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about a common but under-discussed women's health issue. So, let's break some myths about Fibroid.
- Uterine fibroids are noncancerous (benign) tumors in the uterus.
- Most fibroids don't, but some can ― depending on their size and location. The majority of women with uterine fibroids have uncomplicated pregnancies and deliveries.
- Inserting local herbs doesn’t melt fibroids and can cause dangerous complications like gynatresia (blockage of the vagina or uterus), vesico-vagina fistula (opening the bladder into the vagina), and toxic shock syndrome. It is advisable to visit a specialist doctor to discuss the treatment of Fibroids.
- There are several non-surgical alternatives to Hysterectomy. Laparoscopic myomectomy is a minimally invasive treatment option that can remove uterine fibroids, keeping the uterus intact and healthy.

Everything You Should Know About Uterine Artery Embolization
Uterine artery embolization (UAE), sometimes known as uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), is a minimally invasive procedure designed to shrink fibroids. It involves using a catheter to inject tiny particles into the uterine arteries that supply blood to the fibroids. By blocking the blood flow, fibroids are deprived of essential nutrients, causing them to shrink and alleviating related symptoms.
UAE is typically performed by an interventional radiologist, and the procedure is done under mild sedation, not requiring general anesthesia. Unlike hysterectomy, UAE leaves the uterus intact, making it a fertility-sparing option for women who wish to maintain their reproductive capabilities.
Comparing Uterine Artery Embolization and Hysterectomy
Procedure Type: UAE is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure, while hysterectomy is major surgery requiring general anesthesia, with a longer recovery period.
Recovery Time: Recovery from UAE generally takes around 1-2 weeks. In contrast, hysterectomy can require a hospital stay and 4-6 weeks for a full recovery, depending on the surgical method used.
Uterus Preservation: One of the key benefits of uterine artery embolization is that it preserves the uterus, which is an advantage for those who want the option of future pregnancy. Hysterectomy, on the other hand, involves the removal of the uterus, which permanently ends a woman’s ability to conceive.
Symptom Relief: Both procedures are effective for symptom relief. UAE can alleviate symptoms like heavy bleeding, pain, and frequent urination within a few weeks. Hysterectomy provides permanent relief from fibroids but is irreversible.
Future Health Considerations: UAE is often preferred by women who are concerned about the potential hormonal changes that may follow a hysterectomy. Preserving the uterus can also help maintain a sense of bodily integrity and reduce the risk of long-term side effects.
Why Choose Uterine Artery Embolization?
Uterine artery embolization offers several benefits over traditional surgical options:
Minimally Invasive: UAE involves no major incisions and has a lower risk of surgical complications.
Quick Recovery: The outpatient nature of the procedure and minimal recovery time are appealing for those with busy schedules or caretaking responsibilities.
Effectiveness: Studies have shown that UAE is highly effective in reducing the size of fibroids and relieving symptoms.
Preserves Reproductive Health: By keeping the uterus intact, UAE allows women to retain the potential for pregnancy, an essential factor for those planning to expand their families.
What to Expect During and After UAE
During the UAE procedure, an interventional radiologist inserts a thin catheter into the blood vessels that supply the fibroids. Microscopic particles are then introduced through the catheter to block blood flow to the fibroids. As fibroids shrink, symptoms start to improve gradually. Most patients go home the same day, and a typical recovery period lasts about one to two weeks.
After UAE, you may experience mild pain or cramping, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief. You’ll also have follow-up visits with your doctor to ensure that your fibroids are shrinking as expected and to discuss any additional treatment needs.
Making the Choice
The decision between uterine artery embolization and hysterectomy depends on various factors, including your age, reproductive goals, severity of symptoms, and personal health preferences. UAE provides a promising option for those seeking a less invasive solution that still effectively treats fibroids and maintains the option of fertility.
