#the100dayproject Day 16/100 : "We're Dyeing, Not Dying" Fun again today with the 2nd grade Art Start program at Whittier Elementary. We used food coloring and vinegar to prep our fabric and yarn for our project. I'm heat setting the colors in my crockpot tonight. Stay tuned to see how we use this in our "Life cycle of a butterfly"!!! (If I was an alien being from another universe come to spy on earth, I would disguise myself as a butterfly.) 🐛🦋🐛🦋🐛🦋🐛🦋🐛🦋🐛🦋🐛🦋 #100daysoffiberart #fiberdyeing #kidsart #ArtStart #opef #d97 #teachingartist #homonyms #spelling #science #art #STEAM #spinningspells https://www.instagram.com/p/BwavHG8n5M9/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ntigynqzjbd

A few #handdyedyarn samples I dyed up the other day. I used a tye dye kit by @ilovetocreate. The colors from bottom to top are turquoise, fuschia, yellow, lime, and pink. I used #patonsyarn Grace in 100% cotton. Fun kit to use to start out I'd say. #yarndye #yarndyeing #fiberdye #tuliptyedye #fibercoloring #handdyedyarn #handdyed #fiberart #yarnart #colorcrush #tyedye #rainbowcoloredyarn (at Boston, Massachusetts)

Yarn dyeing: Logwood
So, back to our dyeing seminar! Last week we used the most common natural dye ever, onion sleeves, however, I had never heard of this week’s natural dye...logwood!
Logwood or bloodwood derives from a flowering tree, originally native to Mexico and the Central American region in general. The part of the tree used for dyeing is its “inner” bark, which has an orange-brownish colour. As its not available here in Greece, we ordered our logwood from Georgeweil.com.
Logwood can be used as it is (i.e. heated into a pot with water and yarn), no soaking is required. It will result either in reddish or blue-purple shades (like in our case). Check out the different shades, according to each mordant!
I just love this colour pallette! I can’t get enough of purple!
Logwood will readily dye wool, but it is considered a weak dye, since it will fade in time. Interesting fact, logwood dyes cotton as well, check out all this blueish cotton threads above.
Check soon for the next natural dye...pinecones!

Yarn dyeing: Mordants
A couple of weeks ago, we completed treating our yarn with dye fixing agents. Why is this process necessary? Dye fixatives or mordants, as they’re called, help the dye set on the wool or other fiber, which results in a more stable colour.
As mentioned in previous posts, we used both chemical and natural mordants. Chemical mordants are in fact chemical compounds (acids, salts etc) with specific chemical formulas. There’s no need to be super technical in this post, so I’m just stating the key element.
Chemical mordants: alum, chrome, tin, copper, iron, chrome, citric acid
Natural mordants: walnuts, pomegranates, acorns
In order to keep track which mordant has been applied to each bunch, we use an elaborate scheme of labelling; knots!
All chemical mordants (actually, all but iron!) are dissolved in water and applied to pre-soaked yarn in specific quantities. The yarn is then heated for 1.5 hour, no boiling should be reached. If the dye is not to be applied immediately, the yarn is then washed, rinsed and dried.
For the natural mordants, the heating process lasts significantly less.
As you see, some mordants act as dyes as well! While others do not add colour to the yarn, they do! Check the yarn treated with copper, walnuts, pomegranates and acorns! Here is the walnut pre-treated yarn;
Now, you might be wondering, what’s with iron? Well, iron is the only mordant used, that is applied after the dye! As a substance, it’s quite destructive towards the yarn, so the dyed yarn gets to soak in it for no more than 20 minutes (according to the yarn weight).
Having treated our yarn, we are now ready to dye! Our goal is to see how each mordant and dye combine together. And trust me, there are from slight or noticeable to great differences! Have a preview at the onion-sleeves-dyed yarn. Pretty impressive, right?
Side note: Check out the cotton knots! Some of the dyes are effective to cotton as well!

Yarn dyeing: Acorns
So, back to our super exciting yarn-dyeing seminar! After walnuts and pomegranates, our next material, to be used both as mordant and dye, is...acorns!
Acorns give out a steady, brown colour and were traditionally and widely used in fiber dyeing, as well as leather dyeing.
Fiber preparation
Our acorn-dyeing bunch consists of seven loops, i.e. a total of seven different mordant treatment processes; (from top to bottom on the photo below, see the loops on the right) alum, chrome, tin, copper sulfate, citric acid, walnuts and pomegranates.
Fiber dyeing
We all contributed to gathering the dyeing material, we got acorns from all over the country! Just like the walnuts and pomegranates, the acorns were soaked for several days prior to the dyeing day.
Then, the acorns, along with their soaking water, were both added to the pots for heating. (One pot is used for dyeing with acorns, whereas in the other one acrons are used as a mordant, more on that on a separate post!)
As you can imagine, a tangled mess was extracted from the pots!
After cleaning, rinsing and drying, this is the colour range we got!
Stay tuned for our next natural dye...onion sleeves!
