We could stay here all day and night talking about the characters that didn’t make it to LB6, but nonetheless, I feel like throwing my hat in the ring to talk about an absence that feels like a genuine plot point.

The people objecting against Morgan organize under armies, for conquest rather than safety. The new, just queen comes, and is deposed.

However… that is not to say someone does not come close.

Okay. You got me and I am now very curious on your input. Please explain more on why Keith is a male power fantasy because I feel like Logy fits the bill more (plus Felt from Iris 2) more than he does. Frankly, I think the opposite of that, which is why I ask, but again I would like to see things through your perspective. Thanks!

Alright so, first of all, I haven't played Iris 2 or Escha & Logy yet (I'm busy on Ayesha NG+) (because I killed Nanaca's cow and missed Keith's postgame by saving Nio too early…), so this won't be as much of a compare-and-contrast as I'd want. Secondly, this is all obviously very subjective. Third, I DO like Keith, and I would consider this les negativity and more discussion. That said, let's go.

I'll grab the concept "male self-insert fantasy" character and split it into "harem", "power", "relatability" and "aspiration", categories/spectrum. They aren't mutually exclusive, quite often they ARE fully together, but I feel like the distinction matters here (it was born from Strong Opinions about Mana Khemia I will share some other day). "Harem" could also be called "Romance", but I personally feel like "Harem" goes better with the level required here. It is probably what Logy falls into: some dude is there, a lot of girls get a crush on him, you know how it is.

Keith mostly falls in the "Power" and "Aspiration" category: he is a man that men find cool and wish they could be like. Just look at how TV Tropes talks about him for out of text evidence. In-text, Keithgriff is consistently rude to people, does whatever he wants, has an "I'm the only one who understands this ancient art" cause justifying his actions, is the strongest fighter in the game and has whatever skill is needed to solve the plot. In fact, though Ayesha grows more skilled than him in some areas, Ayesha's Bad End consists of him Doing Everything Himself.

The moment where I started seeing him this way was the first Odelia malfunctioning event, where and Ayesha+Keith go do a factory reset on her. It is not only very focused on Keith being Cool, it ends with him doing a full-body study of her to fix her, which is implicitly likened to sex up to her wanting him to take responsibility for her as her new Master.

Putting Keith in this area is complicated because of the overlap with him being the Mentor. Of course he is super strong, knows a lot of stuff and pretty much is the sole instigator for 60% of the plot, he is the Mentor character. Of course he is a dick to everybody, he has reasons (reasons that straddle the line between "genuine respect for ancient art" and "superiority complex"). But I think that when you look at it all together he is the character in the game that hits the most "man that the writers think is cool, excusing everything else about him" points.

Again, this is all subjective. And I like Keith too! I think he is an interesting type of tsundere "doesn't like anyonne but at the same time cares quite a bit" character. This is just why I personally started looking at him in a different way post Odelia Malfunction and why I personally think the writers gave him a very clear role in relation to themselves and the audience.

Can't stop thinking about PokeMas Johto Arc and the way it manages to set up a pretty darn well explored theme in it's relatively small amount of words: Doing stuff by yourself vs Relying on others, as well as the dark spin Team Rocket puts on that.

We actually get to see the arguments for both sides from the very first scene of the Event. The Johto Elite Four manages to defeat two legendaries because of their teamwork, and that Morty and Silver have been working together well, at the same time it is mentioned that Kris' Feraligatr was this close to soloing them by themselves.

And it keeps going through the arc: Silver manages to find Team Rocket and trash them by himself, but would have been stalled by Petrel without Koga and Janine to bail him out. The Johto guys trust on Silver's instincts to allow him to work by himself, and also split themselves up in order to successfully protect everyone who is important, like Bellis and Sonia.

Giovanni argues that an organization is stronger than the sum of its parts, showing how he achieved victory against the elite peeps because they were tired from going through all the grunts, and the strong points of picking up from where someone left off cannot be understated. At the same time, Silver is right that doing stuff by yourself has less moving parts that may fuck something up, as shown by how Petrel completely messed up his own job twice in a row.

And this goes all the way back to A Day With Silver, where he is shown to finish his training with his pokemons by allowing them to run around and do whatever they want, by themselves, and Ho-oh chooses to spend time with his trainer, an option that is accepted.

At the end of the day, I can't wait for Ethan and Lyra to power of friendship their way through alongside Silver on Part 2.

The thing about Final Fantasy VII jokes is that, yes, "acts of terrorism are ok against megacorporations" and all that, it's funny, fuck your megacorporation of choice, but in the specific context of FFVII, my media analysis kicks in and immediately "well no it isn't actually"

Because it isn't! The game makes a point of dedicating a sizeable bit of the climax to having Cait Sith point out that, no, it wasn't justified because what about all the innocent people that died there? Barret recognizes that, yeah, the senseless slaughter he did using "Well, Shinra is evil!" as an excuse was a bad thing

Never mind the direct deaths from Mako 1 explosion. What about hospitals? Food stocks? All the things that relied on that energy? The acts of terrorism against megacorporations has a ridiculous consequence.

BUT! Remember, the crew follows up "we shouldn't let the planet destroy midgar" with "we SHOULD infiltrate Midgar and assassinate all of Shinra's leadership tho".

So like, you just gotta shift gears from "acts of terrorism against megacorporations are justified" towards "get all of Apple's stakeholders in a singular room and kill every last one of them". Now THAT is the message of Final Fantasy VII.
