I think a lot of the titles were uninspired this year, but those two are the least aesthetically pleasing to me.

Best/worst quote/passage?

Best:

Brighter, richer, a window opening to a world Prompto has never known, a dimension unfolding before him. He is experiencing something for which he has no name, has no language and no words and can’t describe. It isn’t just the visual phenomenon. It is the way his heart, too, is opening. As easily and as freely as a door swinging wide.

The simplest explanation, which is no real explanation, is colour.

And the colour is blue.

And the world is breaking apart, fracturing and wheeling and turning in a glorious, shining ballet. Yet Prince Noctis’s face somehow remains the same, an anchor and a harbour and a refuge. There are new colours in his face and colours in his hair and colour dancing around him which he’ll only later know how to name, peach and pink and black and grey and blue, more blue; pure, vast blue of sky.

Why?: Writing the descriptions of the magical kaleidoscope moment in this fic gave me the opportunity to be very creative and artsy. Honestly, I probably could've pushed it even further than I did. But I think this is the fic with the most unique visuals this year.

Best/worst first line?

Best: Caleb knows he’s smart, but he would need a major in psychology with double minors in tiefling and carnie to figure out why Mollymauk pays him as much attention as he does. (Why Do You Like Me?) Why?: Most of my first lines are pretty serviceable. This one is actually clever.

Worst: “H-hello?” (The Wanderer) Why?: Conveying emotion through adding a letter to indicate a stutter is a bit of a cop out. The runner up to this is "“We need a miracle,” Ignis muttered." (See Through) because I feel like that's a cliché thing to say.

Best/worst last line?

Best: Cradled by the arms of his living friend, who time had returned to him, he finally fell asleep. (RE-ROLL) Why?: None of the last lines from this year really stood out to me, but this one is definitely the most interesting.

Worst: Then they dashed out of the alleyway and back into the fray. (The Spark And The Storm) Why?: My last lines tend to have at least some emotion in them. This line doesn't really have any. It's pretty weak.

General questions:

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?

I wrote way more than I expected. I would never just expect to write 150K, aha. I especially didn't expect to write one fic a day for a week (which is what I did for No. 6 week), nor did I expect to write a novel-length longfic, which is what Long Shadows turned out to be.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?

Last year I didn't know I'd get into the Witcher games or the Mighty Nein in 2023. I already had a vague interest in the Gerlion/Geraskier ship, but I didn't know I was going to start actually engaging in the fandom beyond having read one novel. And I've always had a vague awareness of Critical Role thanks to my other mutuals, but never had the intent to get into the fandom myself. That one happened, I think, because I got a chance to play my first game of DND this summer, and got interested in other DND stuff in consequence.

What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.

As always, it's a bit of a toss-up, but I think Long Shadows fucking rocks. I can't wait to share it with everyone. The Bridge, You and I Kaleide, and RE-ROLL are all really good too.

You and I Kaleide is my most popular by hits. The Bridge is my most popular by kudos. (Both in the FFXV fandom.)

Story most underappreciated by the universe?

It's kinda sucky to roll up to the Critical Role fandom like five years too late, especially with such an investment in Widomauk. The CritRole fandom also doesn't seem to comment much, and never really seems to have done so, which is a shame. But I feel like people do like my stories, even if they're not very vocal about it. ;3;

Story that could have been better?

All of my No. 6 week fics were made via writing sprint, so they're not necessarily the best thought out stories I've ever written. I think they're pretty good for what they are, though.

Sexiest story?

Long Shadows /eyes emoji

You can look forward to TWO sexy scenes in that one~

Saddest story?

The Bridge and Sleeping Bastard have some sad moments. RE-ROLL is kinda about a twenty three hour long panic attack, lol. And Long Shadows has a VERY angsty opening, woof.

Most fun?

Welcome To The Polycule has the most banter and silly lines in it. It's kinda unavoidable with Homestuck fics, because that's just how the characters talk.

Story with single sweetest moment?

Probably You and I Kaleide, which is just romance all the way down. But you could also make an argument for one of the fics in my Witcher 1 series. (My Only, A Ring For Dandelion, & To Last Your Whole Life Long)

Hardest story to write?

RE-ROLL, You and I Kaleide, and Long Shadows had the greatest effort put into them. I took copious notes on episodes 26 and 27 of the Mighty Nein campaign in order to be able to write RE-ROLL. You and I Kaleide has a pretty complicated structure that it took me a few tries to get right. And Long Shadows is a longfic, so of course it took more planning than just a one-shot. I've already written an author's note explaining my process for it, which will be released when the fic is fully posted.

Easiest/most fun story to write?

The writing sprints for No. 6 week were all pretty easy. Come up with an idea in five to ten minutes, then write for half an hour. Maybe a few minutes more or a second sprint. Done.

Did any stories shift your perceptions of the characters?

I wrote Why Do You Like Me specifically to explore why Molly would like Caleb. I can see why Caleb would like Molly. Molly's great. But early-campaign Caleb is, well. An anti-social asshole with purposefully poor hygiene who gets reprimanded multiple times for being dishonest and selfish. Yet, there must be something special about him that's obvious to the people around him and not just to the audience, otherwise this ship wouldn't be as popular as it is. The question I had was what, and this fic helped me explore that.

Most overdue story?

See Through was based on an idea I had in like 2018. You and I Kaleide was also a prompt I had sitting around for a while. This is why I hoard all of my good story ideas - I never know when I might bust one out to write it for some gift exchange - or just because!

I also have been saying for many years that I ship KatNepDaveJade, but I never put my money where my mouth is before to actually write the ship.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?

Lots, actually. You and I Kaleide had a very complicated structure. RE-ROLL used real dice rolls to direct the plot. And Long Shadows starts off with just a huge chunk of unapologetic angst, which is so not my normal wheelhouse. Then there were the writing sprints I just posted. Then The Bridge and Window Of The Soul have premises that are a little risqué, as they deal with themes of suicide and burgeoning sexuality. So yeah, I had a lot of fun flexing my creative muscles this year.

What are your fic writing goals for next year?

Work on one of my currently unfinished fics (Perchance to Wake, OFF-Script, or Fateswap Beyond)

first yuletide

Written for @nykamito-x for the FFXV Secret Santa 2020.

Winter Solstice in the Crown City is every bit as remarkable as they say it is, with its snow flurries and evergreens and multicolored lights all around. The sound of bells and carols and laughter fills the air, and people of all ages flock to the street stalls in the plazas despite the cold, all sharing in the collective joy and cheer of the year-end festivities and entertainment.

Exactly everything Selena would love, Nyx reflects wistfully from where he stands, observing the comings and goings of the guests and partygoers. The Eve of the Yule Festival is always a busy day, and new recruits such as himself are always delegated to crowd control.

Better than having nothing to do at home, at least.

(Home isn’t here, he’s also reminded bitterly, but only for a moment.)

Casually weaving through the throngs of people, he spots Altius in plainclothes a few minutes away, looking over the baked goods for a moment before moving on to the next stall. They briefly lock eyes, sharing that inherent steely gaze meant only for the numb. A curt nod, and she disappears into the crowd once more, the way only people like them can do.

A people lost, mourning, displaced, indebted. The last one gets on most everyone else’s nerves than the rest, with pride and hopes and dreams shattered along with the lost Wall. Nyx merely sees it all as a chance at redemption, at coming to terms with things of the past. Ma’s last letter to him said just as much: “Always move forward, so you don’t have any regrets.”

Straightforward, really, but easier said than done.

That time he failed to cover Furia in their last simulation drill haunts him for all of a week, his mind returning to overturned bar tables, burning buildings, bloodied bodies, and— No.

It’s easier to snap out of them these days. Being with new company gives him new things to think about. Captain Drautos is a supportive man. Libertus and Altius help when they can.

He turns in the other direction, not minding the splatter of candy sauce that had just dropped onto his boots.

Nyx was expecting an arm around his neck, not hands over his eyes.

Altius appears mostly disinterested, though the hint of mischief she shares with Libertus makes him wonder if he has enough drinks in his fridge to last until sunrise.

He coughs away from them, patting off the dust from his pants. “You put her up to this or what?”

“We had a bet,” Libertus clarifies. Altius only shrugs in agreement.

The three of them walk back to the dorms in silence. It’s already three AM, and most of the merrymaking has winded down to a more bearable quiet, the deep of the night and the frost in the air heralding the first hours of Yule in a way most reminiscent of home.

Nyx has always preferred the silence. Ma always says that he and Selena are like night and day, but she loves them both just the same.

He does, too. (He just tries to not think about it. When he gets drunk out of his mind later, maybe then.)

The arm around his shoulder that he was expecting comes just then, and Libertus matches his heavy steps, slow and certain and understanding. Altius yawns openly from his other side, mumbling something incoherent as she rubs her gloved palms warm before shoving them back into her coat pockets.

This is quite fine, Nyx allows this much, all things considered. A lonely, mourning, indebted trio in a city that is not quite home, but at least they have each other, and everyone else, too.

The three of them crash way too quickly for the hardened drinkers they claimed to be when they first got together. It’s not so much the physical exhaustion from foot patrol than it is the mental fatigue from being always on their toes and watching for suspicious activity for what felt like a whole day and then some. Libertus himself had broken up more than a few fights on his own, and has more than a few bruises to show for it.

“Hell is Other People,” Altius mutters weakly to no one in particular before knocking back yet another can of cheap beer. The old TV is still on, playing Yule concert reruns, with the volume turned down to its lowest audible level.

“Hell yes, other people,” Libertus agrees, while Nyx manages a broken grunt. The two of them clink their cans together and drink to that, too.

They’ll probably regret it later in the morning, but at least training drills are not watching people, and it’s easier to channel frustration into something requiring brute strength and force, not patience and finely-controlled temperament.

Later, Nyx is alone on the veranda, jacket off, awaiting the sunrise, while Libertus and Altius are fast asleep in the dirty living room. The frigid dawn air fills his bones and keeps him awake enough to not fall off or do anything stupid. Perfect time to smoke, really, had he not forgotten to buy a new lighter on the way home.

He rolls a long-extinguished butt between his fingers, imagining the faint scent of tobacco rising from the end as it is blown away by a gentle wind that sends shivers down his spine.

Just then, the area before him is bathed in a faint blue light, and he looks up, in time to see the clouds disappear to reveal the full moon. The last time he has beheld such a sight was back home, where there are no city lights and smog and the constant flickering of the failing Wall.

It hasn’t been that long for him yet, has it?

Selena always hated it back then when he got sentimental. “You sound just like dad,” she teases him while sticking out her tongue. Always been her own person, that girl— full of life and laughter, and loved nature and the Yule and every living being.

She also loved the full moon; she was born under one, after all.

Nyx blinks back the tears from his eyes; the cold, prickly air helps with that. Things will never be the same as before, but that’s all right, for now. He’ll get by, like he always has.

2020 writing review

Thanks for the tag, @gladiowrites! (I know it’s not a tag, but this is fun to do lol)

I.. honestly wrote a lot this 2020. No kidding. Quarantine productivity was real, but so is residency languishing by the wayside while everyone was busy surviving and adjusting. I highly doubt 2021 will be the same, but I’ll always cherish 2020 just because of the writing and nothing else.

This is gonna be long.

FIRST CREATION + MOST RECENT CREATION OF 2020

8:15 am - Final Fantasy XV. Lunafreya. February 2020. - First piece ever written for the year. - Intended to be a Luna-centric AU, in which the Nox Fleurets were deposed and she’s now a regular teacher. Never managed to write anything beyond that, though, because residency. (Back then, I didn’t know it was gonna be the beginning of the end, so I had hopes. Oh well.)

take heart - Bungou Stray Dogs. Dazai/Chuuya. Gods/Humans AU. - Discovered so much about myself writing this. Also (hopefully) I managed to get into Dazai’s headspace correctly. He’s an extremely difficult character to write, so finishing this brought so much gratification.

you don’t raise heroes, you raise sons - Final Fantasy VIII. Laguna, Squall. Post-canon. - Probably my most heartfelt work of the year- scratch that, ever. Also happy with how I just let myself go writing this and didn’t need to think twice.

A CREATION YOU’RE REALLY PROUD OF

oneiric moments (or, five nights with you) - Bungou Stray Dogs. Dazai/Chuuya. - Written for the SKK Fic Exchange for Summer 2020. - Five interconnected fics. 18,985 words. - Might not be a big deal for others, but this was taxing because I don’t usually write long, multichaptered stuff. I got carried away, though. It ain’t as well-polished as my more recent stuff, but I’m proud of myself for pulling this off.

But they’re both sisters! Just trust me on this. - The proper entry for this would be silencer, but I can’t very well mention one without the other, so have both anyway. I read both only this year, after all. Waiting for Godot by @eternal-aegis - Bungou Stray Dogs. Dazai, Fyodor, Chuuya. Canon-divergent. - Amazing theme, amazing philosophy, amazing writing. It makes you think. It makes you analyze and explore. This writer definitely knows her stuff, and it shows. Catharsis by @gladiowrites - Final Fantasy VIII. Rinoa, Gen. Caraway. Post-canon. - The denouement to the Caraway family drama we all deserve. I love how Rinoa is presented in this fic. She’s a normal person who makes mistakes and learns her lessons. So is Fury. Burned bridges don’t always have to stay down, and this fic illustrates that wonderfully.

Culmination by @gladiowrites - Final Fantasy VIII. Squall, Rinoa. Post-canon. - We can’t all have happy endings. This fic also illustrates that very well. While I, a Squinoa fan, personally ascribe to the happy ending Squall and Rinoa must have had after the events of FF8, this fic is so compelling and grounded and reflective and I totally buy this.

Here Without You by @muselover1901 - Akagami no Shirayuki-hime. Zen/Shirayuki. Real world quarantine AU. - One of the sweetest stories I’ve ever read this year. I can definitely relate to a lot of things in this fic. I’ve been rereading all of Muse’s ANS stuff whenever I feel down, and they all hit the spot.

Savor The Moment by @joeys-piano - Bungou Stray Dogs. Oda. Pre-canon. - Yes, yes, YES. One of the best stories I’ve ever read this year, ever. (And I mean stories, not fanfics.) Great character study about a man named Oda and a day in his life and a page (or three) out of his book of relationships. The love poured into this is simply overflowing and precious. I’ve been following Joey since this fic was being written, and I’m so proud of him.

False Equivalences by @slowquotesquill - Dai Gyakuten Saiban. Asougi, Ryuunosuke. Fullmetal Alchemist AU. - This fic also! Oh, My Heart. The cynicism of a state alchemist and the optimism of a foreign doctor. It perfectly hits the spot for everything FMA, and we all know that SQQ’s Asouryuu fics are always to die for. It’s the ultimate combo.

The whole Promptober Leo/Will/Despair series by @eternal-aegis - Kekkai Sensen. Various themes, many of which are dark/mature. - I’ve said this with Waiting for Godot, and I’ll say it again: Aegis knows her stuff. This is her exploring further in that direction, and you can feel the improvement with every fic in the series. I really love how adventurous these stories are, and how much depth you can go with every one. Her characterization is layered and exquisite, and the underlying lore is well-thought-out. - tl;dr: B3 Goddess.

Predestined by Galkimasera - Final Fantasy VIII. Rinoa, Squall. Reverse/Fateswap AU. - A very well-written reverse AU! The circumstances of Squall and Rinoa in this ‘verse fit so well and are so well thought out. I love this AU so much, you don’t even know. It also fills my nostalgic shipper’s heart with much joy at seeing quality content in this Year of our Lord 2020.

For auld lang syne, my dear by @by-nina - Fullmetal Alchemist. Roy, Riza. Canon-compliant + post-canon. - Holiday feels, snapshots through time, and all over showing Roy and Riza’s budding relationship over the years. And it does remind me of a lot of the SKK fics I’ve written (thematic-wise). This was such a treat to read and to follow. All her FMA fics are. She does Royai so much justice. Am not yet finished reading smoke without fire, but I’ll get to that, too!

Wow! Absolutely blew 2021′s word count out of the water! In fact, my most productive year to date since I’ve been doing these wrap-up memes. The next highest is 98,382 words from 2020.

Best/worst title?

Best: Falling Water

Worst: Irons In The Honey - what a dreadful mental image, lol

Best/worst first line?

Best: Sunlight trickled through the branches of the forest, beamed down from the clear blue sky to kiss the leaves and ground. (Falling Water) Why?: This image is very romantic and vivid. It isn’t the best constructed sentence I’ve ever constructed, but most of my other first lines were more serviceable than punchy or evocative. The runner up would be the first line from None But The Brave, which sets up a mood and conflict instantly -- “No one who had not been to the Kingdom of Malkariss could understand how utterly devoid of hope it was for the slaves who toiled there.”

Worst: Jaskier was well aware that Geralt had too much potion toxicity in his blood. (Poison Paradise) Why?: BOY is this clunky. RIP.

Best/worst last line?

Best: When they eventually left the valley, stocked with flower seeds, seedlings, secret potions, and triumph, they flew back to Ferelden in style. (Honey) Why?: LOOK! A ZEUGMA!!

(The one for Because You Are My Friend is pretty good too: “Noctis laughed and Prompto did too, heart so light he didn’t need his wings to fly.”)

Worst: Against Prompto’s new lips, Noctis felt perfect. (The Adventures of Prompto Argentum) Why?: It’s not horrible or anything, I’m just kinda Eh on it. Maybe because perfect is such a vague word. It just isn’t as strong as the rest of the fic, I feel. I’m also not super fond of the last lines of High School And Forever and The Painting Of Mao.

General questions:

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted? Definitely more. I never in a million years expected Blossoming Souls to reach 56,000 words all on its own, let alone to outstrip the preceding years I’ve been doing this meme.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year? The Witcher - I haven’t seen the show, and I’ve only read one book. But I was inspired by a piece of fanart I saw on my dash.

What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest. This is a hard one. Probably Blossoming Souls, although I also really like Falling Water and The Adventures of Prompto Argentum.

Okay, NOW your most popular story. By kudos it’s Poison Paradise. By hits it’s Blossoming Souls.

Story most underappreciated by the universe? Irons In The Honey doesn’t have any comments on it :( At least I know the gift recipient liked it. Story that could have been better? I’m really not thrilled with A Royal Holiday. It’s okay, but I feel like it just doesn’t work in the way that some of my other AUs do. Can’t figure out what it’s missing or what’s wrong with it. I did my best but I wish it had had a beta. Sexiest story? Poison Paradise

Saddest story? The Immortor Most fun? Blossoming Souls. Just writing in the fast-paced, group environment was so fun, especially given how much I vibed with the rest of my team. Story with single sweetest moment? Probably Four Slices. It’s about Iroh realising how much his darling nephew loves him, so hard to beat that in terms of fluff.

Hardest story to write? Also Four Slices. I’ve never written something from Iroh’s POV before, even though he is the best. It took me a while to complete, even though it’s fairly simple in concept.

Easiest/most fun story to write? In a way, Blossoming Souls was super easy. Words came out and they had to stay there. But of the more conventional fics, I’d say The Painting of Mao. I came up with a concept and put it to paper with no real stress.

Did any stories shift your perceptions of the characters? Four Slices forced me to do a little more research into the lore around Zuko and Iroh’s relationship from the comics. Reading Mattimeo and writing None But The Brave did shift my perception of some of the characters a bit. I had to find the sympathy in both Cynthia and Vitch in order to redeem them.

Most overdue story? The Immortor was from an older concept, but I can’t say that any of these fics were necessarily overdue as such.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them? It was definitely a risk to participate in a group writing project. If everyone else had flaked, that would’ve been the end of that. I don’t know what I learnt from it exactly, but I sure had a good time. It probably helped my ‘planning on the fly’ skills. I also got to flex my angst muscles a bit with The Immortor, which is good, because I don’t use them too often.

What are your fic writing goals for next year?

My writing goals for 2023 are:

1. Once again, write more original fiction. 3 short stories by 2024 is definitely doable. 2. Writing a story or fic in French. 3. Making progress on one of my unfinished works on AO3 (Perchance to Wake, OFF-Script, or Fateswap Beyond).

And if I had to pick one fic from my list of unwritten dream fics to complete, it would be Day by Day.
