It was a losing battle. Nothing Soroban said got through to the three who had raised her through much of her childhood. Not even old man Genbu could force them to see reason.
"The last time she left, we nearly lost her to those foul fiends born from hopeless nightmares!" Byakko roared.
"Strong though she is—far stronger than when she set off to join those ijin—she is still bound by mortal constraints," Suzaku continued. "Surely you understand that we cannot in good conscience let her wander so far from home yet again."
Genbu sighed. "She survived going to another world and is even working to find a means of restoring it. What more must she do to prove herself capable of living on her own?"
Seiryu scoffed. "She may have survived going to that lost world, but it came at the cost of her remaining sight." He raised his sword higher. "I will not suffer another sacrifice forced to be made by my little kitsune."
Remia knocked her fist against her chin, a wry smile curling her lips. "Looks like I'll be extending my visit, Soroban."
The Kojin sighed. "I'll have Senri help prepare dinner..."

🎵 I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was 🎶 (Cora & The Four Lords)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ ID: A set of FFXIV Pokemon Trainer portrait parody images. The first image is a young 14 year old Cora and his four starter auspices: L-R Suzaku the red bird, Seiryu the snake, Byakko the tiger cub and Genbu the tortoise. Cora holds Byakko in one arm like a kitten, and Seiryu is so small he has to perch on Cora's head or he gets lots. The second image is an older 24 year old Cora and his four evolved auspices: L-R Seiryu the serpent, Suzaku the firebird, Genbu the tortoise and Byakko the white tiger. They are in their full auspice animal form and looking extremely fierce... Except for Genbu who is still cute and tiny but will Hydro Cannon you to the face if you tease him. ]

Jeuno: The First Walk
Context, references, and random BS about stuff in the first FFXI raid and the quests before and after.
Tossing under a Read More mainly because I talked too much and I don't wanna throw a giant ass post on your dash.
Enjoy!
THE RAID
An interesting thing about music: in the Boyahda Tree and Tu'Lia sections, the music changes to the battle theme when engaging the trash mobs, and then it fades out once they're dead.
Oh, and just to note, given that FFXI and FFXIV have different combat systems and visuals, even if I mention that a boss ability is something from FFXI, understand I don't mean it's the same in regards to visuals or mechanics. I'm mainly just pointing out references.
PRISHE
Prishe is a MNK and a WHM, so she fights hand to hand, but can also use Holy / Light-elemental spells.
Nullifying Dropkick, Auroral Uppercut, and Knuckle Sandwich are unique weaponskills that Prishe uses in FFXI.
Asuran Fists is a Hand-to-Hand weaponskill in FFXI, only useable by MNK and PUP. Learning it required getting to a certain level of H2H skill and then doing a quest. It hits 8 times, and so does this version of it.
Her "You can't stop the flood of mortal existence!" line is something she said in FFXI.
BOYAHDA TREE
Aquarius was a NM crab in FFXI. There was a chance it would spawn instead of one of the normal crab enemies in the Boyahda Tree zone. Oddly, in the raid it uses Hundred Fists, which is the original MNK 2-hour (it made you attack very fast for a short time). In FFXI, this mob was a PLD, not a MNK. But it did have a very high attack speed, so I assume they gave it that ability to simulate that.
(I'm pretty sure Aquarius once spawned and killed me while I was trying to raise my Scythe skill on the crabs in the Tree. A friend came and raised me and helped me kill it for revenge.)
No music plays when you're not fighting something, which fits, because the Boyahda Tree zone in FFXI doesn't have any background music.
FAFNIR
Honestly not much to say about Fafnir. Overall, most of its attacks share names with ones it does in FFXI and are kinda similar. Spike Flail hit everyone in range in FFXI, and Dragon Breath was a frontal cone, for two examples.
One other thing: I didn't know this, but in FFXI there's a stronger version of Fafnir, Nidhogg. Way back, Fafnir used to be a timed spawn, and there was a chance Nidhogg would spawn instead (now they're both spawned by items). So I wonder if maaaaaaaybe there's a chance you go into this raid and it's called Nidhogg instead?
TU'LIA
Technically this is Ru'Aun Gardens. That's the actual name of the zone. But it's on the floating island of Tu'Lia. Players usually just called it "sky".
A note on the ground mentions trying to get to Ve'Lugannon Palace and missing the raid. I think the only thing this can be about is spawning Kirin. A few NMs in the palace dropped items to spawn some NMs that then dropped items used to spawn Kirin.
Another note on the ground is referencing the Ark Angels.
Despot is a NM Doll that dropped an item used to spawn Genbu, which in turn dropped an item used to spawn Kirin.
ARK ANGELS
Man this fight is a banger.
Their lines like "You shall be defeated by the apathy that plagues you…" are directly from FFXI.
AA Galka is a SAM and DRG. His pattern of using Meikyo Shisui and three Great Katana weaponskills is exactly how he behaves in his FFXI fight, right down to which three weaponskills he uses. Also, Dragonfall is a unique weaponskill he had in FFXI.
AA Tarutaru is a BLM and DRK. Guillotine was a four-hit Scythe weaponskill only available to DRKs (it was single target though).
AA Mithra is a BST and THF. In FFXI she'd summon a pet to assist her, but alas, she doesn't do that here. Her Rampage and Cloudsplitter moves are named after Axe weaponskills from FFXI, while Havoc Spiral is her unique weaponskill.
AA Elvaan is a PLD and WHM. Dominion Slash is her unique weaponskill in FFXI. Arrogance Incarnate is also something she used in FFXI, but it's just her own version of another weaponskill available to players, so not really unique.
AA Hume is a WAR and NIN, and man, he does a lot. Cross Reaver is his unique weaponskill in FFXI. Utsusemi was a NIN spell that gave you shadow doubles that absorbed attacks for you. Mighty Strikes is the original WAR 2-hour ability. It made every attack a critical, which is why he then uses Critical Reaver. And he tries to use Mijin Gakure, which was the original NIN 2-hour. You blew yourself up to deal damage based on your HP.
SHADOW LORD
Giga Slash and Implosion are attacks he had in FFXI. Tera Slash is from the Dynamis Lord fight though. Creating clones of himself is also something from the Dynamis Lord version.
OTHER STUFF
ALXAAL
I am 99% sure this is a character from Chains of Promathia called Louverance. That's also not his real name, but we won't go into that right now. Bakool Ja Ja naming him "vagabond" is kinda appropriate.
Honestly, I find it kinda funny they used this character. If you'd asked me to suggest CoP characters that could show up in this storyline, he would not have been on my list.
Also, Alxaal initally thinking he's been captured by the Mamool Ja may be a nod to the Besieged system in Treasures of Aht Urghan. At times, a horde of beastmen (Mamool Ja, Trolls, or Undead) will march on and attack the capital city of Al Zahbi in order to steal the Astral Candescence. Players have to fight them off. Certain NPCs can be captured as well, and players can go rescue them.
ULMIA
An Elvaan female, a very talented singer, and basically the nicest person ever. She lives in the Tavnazian Safehold and is Prishe's best friend. She's more or less "cute girl important to the plot #2" for Chains of Promathia.
THE TAVNAZIA MARQUISATE
Sister city to San d'Oria, located on an archipelago off the west coast of Quon. The opening cutscene of FFXI shows it being attacked by the Beastmen Horde during the Crystal War.
During the Crystal War, San d'Oria leaked false information to the Beastmen to get them to attack Tavnazia. Partially to get some pressure off the kingdom, but also because Tavnazia had a close relationship with the Empire of Aht Urhgan to the east. The hope was that the Empire would join the fight against the Beastmen after Tavnazia was attacked.
But the Empire didn't get involved, and later Tavnazia was destroyed by an explosion. The common belief is that it was an Orc superweapon, like Prishe says, but that's not what actually happened.
LITTLE THINGS
I was confused by Prishe talking about liking tacos until I happened to talk to Alxaal and he mentioned Tavnazian tacos. They're a food item that increases defense. I'd forgotten about them.
Just a little tidbit, the Aldo that Prishe mentions is also from Tavnazia. He's also the little boy in the FFXI opening cutscene.
The Hume Adventurer mentions his gear came from exploring the Alzadaal Undersea Ruins. I suspect that's referring to Salvage missions that you access from that zone. His equipment resembles the Ares set you can get from that.
Tumblr media
Heh. This shade in fake Jeuno appears to be "looking for group" or "looking for members". No party finder in FFXI (at least when I played, dunno about now), so you'd frequently see people shouting to find groups or members for leveling or missions.
Teleport taxis! There's another shade with pop-up text mentioning Mea and 1k. The Crag of Mea was one of a few places that you could teleport to via a spell, but only WHMs could cast it. (And there was a unique spell for each place.) So you'd frequently be paying someone to teleport you.
The Auction House in FFXI works differently than the Market Board in FFXIV. The seller sets a mininum price for the item they put up for sale, and pays a fee based on that minimum price. The buyer cannot see this minimum price, and makes a bid. If the bid equals or exceeds the minimum price, the buyer gets the item and the seller receives the amount of gil the buyer bid.
Tumblr media
Prishe's last sentence is a reference to the Bazaar, but specifically to how players would avoid the tax that it used to have. The Bazaar is an alternate to the Auction House and lets you sell directly from your inventory. But selling via the Bazaar while in town used to incur a tax, so players would idle just outside Jeuno in Rolanberry Fields. I called it "Rolanberry Market". SQEX eventually removed the tax.
Tumblr media
In FFXI, you unlock the ability to use a Support Job, or sub job, at level 18 by doing a quest either in Selbina or Mhaura. Both quests make you collect three items from monsters, but they require different items. What Alxaal is describing here is the Selbina one, which was the easier one to do.

Fic Authors Self Rec
When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Spread the love ❤️
I was tagged by @myreia and @a-shakespearean-in-paris, thank you both! It's hard to pick favorites? (I cheated)
Tagging forward, and to anyone else who wants to!
@galadrieljones @redinkofshame @ubejamjar @roguelioness @galadae
@bearlytolerant @kittlesandbugs @ellstersmash @janzoo @coldshrugs
@gangrelslut @superfluouskeys @buttsonthebeach
- 1. The Lovers
FFXIV | Shadowbringers | Wol x Tansui | Explicit | 4310 words
After defeating the Rak'tika Lightwarden, Warrior of Light (& Darkness) finds time to teleport back to the source, yearning to see her lover again. Tansui is more than happy to see her again, and their need for each other is undeniable. However, after they come together, something weighs on Tansui's mind
This is one of my most recent fics, and I really love exploring both Meryta's and Tansui's POV in this one. I struggled getting it to where I wanted, but I'm so happy with where it ended up and some of the nuances I was able to get in here.
- 1.5 Passing Through
FFXIV | Stormblood patches | Wol x Tansui | Explicit | 4518 words
Warrior of Light Meryta Khatin, while helping Genbu with the Four Lords passes through Onokoro. She can't help checking in on a friend - and Meryta and Tansui can't deny the attraction between them.
Alright, I'm cheating and adding one more Meryta and Tansui fic. This one was the one that settled the idea I had for them in my mind, that made me think of them as ship - even if they're not there yet. I had such fun writing it, and I think it shows.
- 2. Choices
FFXIV | Shadowbringers | Wol | Gen | 736 words
After the reveal and failure of G'raha's plan, Meryta has a moment - angry, hurt, confused and falling apart
I love this little MSQ coda, it was so great to express the feeling about the whole plot, and how it felt to Meryta. I think I expressed her feelings and interiority so well, and put some great images in here.
- 3. Comfort
Dragon Age | Vampire AU | Solavellan | Explicit | 7107 words
"Brooding alone?” someone asks. A woman, an elf, leans on the bar next to him. Her red hair is up in a ponytail, displaying the tawny skin on her muscular back. She is wearing a shimmering white dress, only a scrap of fabric covering her back. “I am just here to enjoy a drink in peace,” he replies. She laughs, eyes sparkling and lighting up her face. Her lips are painted bold red, and he notices her vallaslin, a dull olive covering the right side of her face. Dalish, then. Not many clans do that anymore. “No one comes here to drink in peace,” she says. “Iwyn Lavellan.” She holds out her hand, and he has to take it, bringing it to his lips in a kiss. Later, he blames the alcohol, or her sparkling the eyes, or the way the dress barely covers her ass. “Solas. Pleased to meet you.”
Probably my favorite AU. I love the little plot, I love the world, I love the dynamic between them. I love writing Iwyn as the immortal. I love the images and descriptions I wrote - and he smut is pretty good too!
- 4. Home
Uprooted (Naomi Novik) | post-book | Agnieszka/ Sarkan | Teen | 2175 words
He misses her, just not more than he fears belonging.
This is probably the favorite fic I have ever written. I think I hit the mood of the book so well, and managed to make a believable continuation. I just think this one flows so well and I'm very proud of it.
- 5. Temerity
Dragon Age | post Inquistion | Solavellan | Explicit | 10728 words
Iwyn Lavellan is doing all that she can to stay one step ahead of Solas, opposing him after he reveals his plans. When she runs into her former lover in an abandoned ruin, they start a tenuous and dangerous dance. They can't help but being drawn to each other, no matter how harsh the flames of love or hate will burn them.
I love this one for so many reasons. Though not Iwyn and Solas canon (in my head) reunion, I love the darkness of this, and the way they're messed up. I'm so proud of myself for going there and writing this and putting it out in the world. I love some of the metaphors, I love the intensity. And I love the open ending I left; do they spiral or do they make it through?

Was talking to a mutual about this, but I was thinking maybe there's different cultural iterations for Eikons, so there's Leviathan as portrayed in the FFXVI DLC and their dominant, but Othard's version could be more like the Four Lords/Auspicious Beasts mythos (suzaku, genbu, byakko, and seiryu). Even in FFXIV, Suzaku isn't considered the same as THE Phoenix, but her symbolism is close. In a similar vein, Jae could be the dominant of Seiryu, so kinda like Leviathan but still different enough-

Note
(UNMARKED FFXIV SPOILERS AHEAD. Sorry, I have no idea how to spoiler an ask.)
More Final Fantasy XIV plurality for you:
Dark Knight questline (Warrior of Light, Fray, and Myste)
Four Lords questline (Soroban and Genbu)
Black Mage questline (Lalai and Shatotto)
Eureka Orthos questline (Koh Rabntah and Noah)
For the first, the WoL was already on the list, so we just added Fray into their entry (Myste seems to just be Fray as thats her last name? The wiki wasnt clear about it)
All others have been added as-is.
Thanks!

DRESSED IN RAGE, INSIDE MY CAGE.
Tumblr media
MY P A N D A E M O N I U M, STILL BOUND TO THE FLAME THAT I BEAR.
suzaku ffxiv verse information
born under the kururugi family line, suzaku grew up in an average raen boy's life in kugane, learning his manners alongside his swordsmanship. his mother disappeared under mysterious circumstances when he was just seven summers, and though he was still with his father genbu, suzaku was far closer to his kendo teacher, tohdoh, a hingan hyur. his life would change forever but a few years later, when a trio of young children came to live in the ijin district. three ishgardians, made up of two elezen cousins and an adopted viera brother. their names were euphemia, nunnally, and lelouch, respectively. suzaku grew close to all three of them, learning how they were effectively abandoned by their father and were sent here, as he told them of his own background. the four grew to be close friends, with suzaku and lelouch becoming especially close. one day, this happiness would unfortunately come to an end. euphemia had learned of sui no sato, the raen village beneath the ruby sea, and wanted to see what it was like considering that it was where suzaku's mother came from. though hesitant, suzaku and lelouch went through with the plan with her, nunnally staying behind in kugane as she was still too young. the children did their best, but despite even being able to cross the sea, they could not go below the waters, and instead ended up in the land of the red kojin. the kojin would let them live...however, only if they would succumb to the worship of their kami. euphemia was the first to be tempered, to which she attempted to attack lelouch under the influence of the god susano. out of defense he killed her, but suzaku had only seen that moment of the viera striking his own adoptive sister down. he reacted on impulse, accusing him of murder and attacking him back. they got lucky that they had been tracked by suzaku's father, who brought them back to kugane, but both lelouch and nunnally were gone by the next morning. genbu rationalized this as meant to happen, a punishment for trying to go out into the ruby sea, and in response suzaku attacked his own father, the fight escalating to the point where he accidentally killed the older au ra. when it was discovered by suzaku's teacher, he covered it up for him as a suicide, under disgrace of allowing his son to go along with such a thing. suzaku would then stay with tohdoh and distant relatives for the next several years, until he was old enough to leave kugane on his own. learning of the eorzean way of the sword being taught in ul'dah's gladiatorum, suzaku decided that that was where he was going to start, not only on his own personal journey of life, but on his quest to find lelouch again. little did he know how this decision would come to change the star forever.

realizing that on top of Koryu SAM (Name STILL pending after so long) i have four (main) ffxiv OCs so i could assign them to the four lords for funsies. Not actual assignments ofc, but I thought it would be fun to draw them all together with the 4+1 Lords as a theme.
It's... surprisingly hard to get more in-depth, consistent information on what each beast represents, other than direction, element, and season. I tried finding virtues associated with each, but each source I found gave a different answer. I gave it my best shot, though!
Ava - Seiryu/Qinglong. Of course I'm giving Ava the dragon. While XIV associates him with water, he's more traditionally associated with wood/wind - Perfect for a dragoon who soars through the sky. It's also associated with leadership and gives luck with victory.
Sayin - Genbu/Xuanwu. The black tortoise seems to have roots in a form of fortune-telling where the tortoise would commune with ancestors in the realm of the dead. Fortune-telling and family are key aspects to Sayin's character. In addition, Genbu also is represented by the time of midnight.
Opheliaux - Byakko/Baihu. The biggest stretch. According to some, Byakko helps with business/money luck, and Opheliaux is a merchant. Byakko also seems to represent benevolence. Finally, Byakko is associated with the element of metal, written 金 (gold), and there's a link there with alchemy and the gold accents in Liaux's fashion.
Skay - Suzaku/Zhuque. Perhaps the most regal of the four lords, Suzaku gives fortune with love in Japanese astrology. According to some, the Vermillion Bird also leads one to immortality. Also, what Black Mage doesn't love a good Astral Fire?
I considered having Skay represent Genbu as the black tortoise is actually a tortoise and snake intertwined, and that dualistic nature could be cool to incorporate Baal into the mix -- plus, Genbu has an association with longevity as well.
I also pondered switching Byakko (Liaux) and Seiryu (Ava) as Byakko is a war deity and Seiryu also gives luck in business, but I was really adamant about giving Ava the dragon lol.

ffxiv 4.2
its fairly reasonable to say that base personality and memory/experience make up key parts of who a person are and that arguable a persona with a different set of memories is a different person. with the case of yotsuyu though I'd still say she is accountable given how likely it is her memories will return and the continuity of personhood even without her memories. also internet dropped in the gosetsu reunion cutscene if i have to do that fight again!
yotsuyu foldora parallel. both women that personally suffered from their countrymen and chose to side with the garleans. Foldora did so to prove the worth of ala mhigans to the garleans and to raise ala mhigo's position. Yotsuyu did so to punish Doma.
capture of death. there is always the third option of faking her death. change her appearance and given how's she's acting no one would recognize her.
doing the four lords quests as well and said it before but just like lyse you can tell that they swapped out the tataru writer.
Tumblr media
contour king.
the asymmetry of these trials annoys me. we only get trials for suzaku, byakku, and seiryu but not genbu its not balanced!
back to msq. what asahi (always makes me pay attention when the dude named dawn pokes up in the sunset expansion) says makes a lot of sense probelm is that twitter thinks he's nuts so now im wondering what his deal is.
there it is, a prisoner exchange they want yotsuyu. note that asahi also didn't say garlemald wouldn't invade again.
Tumblr media
could just as easily mean the arrangement doma had under hien's father. just ambiguous to be hopeful without actually promising anything. and when pressed he changes topics to eikons.
what are the kojin doing this far inland. he's trying realy hard to demonize yotsuyu well not that he has to try at all. but he's got his narrative going.
true reform for the empire can only come from within but the empire also doesn't have to exist. it can just stop exist as a governing or political entity altogether.
I can't say i wholly believe asahi but I'm not convinced he's suspicious either. i chose the ... option don't know what to make of him
Oh hien is killing her! I was thinking it is true there may not be another chance for a prisoner exchange and those conscripts are now basically hostages so it may be beneficial to exchange yotsuyu given her memory loss would make her useless to garlemald. problem is she could always get her memory back. also justice like she can't get off scott free for what she's done.
bro don't just bring your sword out to menace people. if you're going to kill her it should have been done before she had a chance to speak to realize it.
Tumblr media
refer to above.
if no memory she goes free and if she regains her memory she goes to the garleans. that's more merciful that I would be. if it were me it'd be no memory then to the garleans but if she regains her memories she's executed.
hmm when he was first introduced asahi said he ans yotsuyu had little connection or something let me find the line
Tumblr media
yeah when he introduced himself he immediately tries to distance himself once yugiri outs his family relations. but then after proposing the prisoner exchange he's emphasized it twice.
Tumblr media
oh. there it is. there's the crazy
so it was during the doman rebellion that zenos discovered katanas and zenos killed the rebels that were going to kill asahi. for all asahi spoke of the crimes of yotuyu and garlemald he never spoke as if doma were home.
oh. he's gay.
alisaie's so smart
did hien really leave yotsuyu and asahi alone, i though yugiri would at least be listening in from the rafters or something.
really. they brought zenos back! or is that like a clone or something. wouldn't put it past varis to clone his son

Agreed, I feel almost certain the melee DPS will be the Corsair and use the Scouting gear. I think the magic job will be Pictomancer or Geomancer, as both fit the shirt, and Geomancer has established lore in FFXIV as well.
Geomancers are from Doma, Genbu, the Turtle lord from The Four Lords quest line, is a Geomancer, and is met during a quest called Tortoise in Time, a reference to the Turtles in Time game. The Pictomancer references are obvious.
