Fuyume skidded to a halt in the middle of the corridor, fingers tightening on her box of vials. Across from her was someone young, probably not any older than herself. They were accompanied by two more around the same age, maybe slightly older, and a woman with a scythe. None wore Garlean uniforms, and that was good enough for her. She couldn't afford to be picky.
"Please," she rasped, voice hoarse. "Please help me."

FFXIV Swap Poem Thingy
I had the honour of being matched with the very marvellous @paintedscales for the FFXIV Swap. I really enjoyed learning about Nomin and her backstory and it's given me the opportunity to do a lot of background reading on Xaela lore and the history of the Azim Steppe. Definitely worth reading Nomin's Carrd if you want more detail on the events described below.
However I was a bit worried that a poem might not be as exciting as some of the beautiful artwork created by others for this project, so I took the liberty of commissioning a custom character banner for Nomin as a little extra.
Anyway Poetry Time (mostly under the cut as it's quite long).
The Nameless Child.
The nameless child, left by design,
Bound tight with rope to sacred pine,
As tribal customs did dictate,
But was resolved to change her fate,
And once she had her bonds untwined,
She chose to leave her tribe behind,
From that day forth, without regret,
She was no longer a Tumet.
Having swiftly named herself,
Quietly and with practiced stealth,
She made her way across the plains,
To the lone town the Steppe contains,
Where, seeing one so young exiled,
They grudgingly took in the child,
Gave her food and clothes withal,
And raised her as a young Saghal.
The traditions of this peaceful tribe,
Among many other things proscribe,
The killing or the subjugation,
Of beasts with whom they share creation,
And thus, bitter irony indeed,
The adherents of this gentle creed,
Were enslaved, or left for dead,
Their lives destroyed by the Jhungid.
Having beheld her brother slain,
She had to work quite hard to feign,
Any form of acquiescence,
As she grew through her adolescence,
Under the watchful, callous, eyes,
Of custodians who she despised,
So she knew exactly what to do,
When battle dawned with the Kharlu.
As each tribe faced the other’s host,
In battle for the Eastern coast,
She drew the arrow in her bow -
And turned her back upon the foe,
Without pause, without remorse,
She shot her leader from his horse,
Before riding back to burn their yurts,
Administering their just deserts.
Having freed her former tribe,
She knew that she must circumscribe,
Her kinship with them all thenceforth,
To keep them safe, so journeyed North,
And West across the Steppe alone,
In search of tribes as yet unknown,
And, from spending time with each,
She’d learn all that they had to teach.
Whether across a glacier,
Travelling with the Angura,
Or racing upon an Oroq Sled,
She absorbs all that they’ve done and said,
And be it Himaa, Gharl or Mol,
Each colour's blended in her soul,
And every one that she recalls,
Is carried forth in her footfalls.
(For those that are interested in such things I opted for rhyming couplets as the nearest form I could find to traditional Mongolian Epic Poetry (known as tuuli). There are six variations of narrative in these epics, and (extremely loosely) I opted for The Mythicised Epic, where the hero fights to restore order, as the basis for Nomin's tale. The most famous version of this narrative in Mongolian Folklore is the Epic of King Gesar, but there are lots of other ones. Definitely worth learning about if you enjoy cultural history.)
Many thanks to @paintedscales for their patience in waiting for me to pull my finger out and finish this - and also for helping me with the pronunciation of the various Xaela tribes with which Nomin has been associated. Needless to say, until this assistance, I was apparently getting most of them very wrong (aside from the Mol - I could manage that one!)
I hope you enjoy my silly poem and the nice Custom Banner!

I will yap and I love fish
Working on the designs for the characters in my FFXIV x KHDR AU “GENESiS”
This one’s for my Xehaqus kid Herkimer, who is a dark-bright scaled Au Ra, due to the fact that Xehanort is a dark scaled Au Ra while Eraqus is bright scaled.
(He is a Light Mage at the beginning of the story, but later on becomes a Black Mage. (He also simply dyes his clothes to black, nothing too special/important.))

After Ifrit
January's Rambles Day 6
Word Count: 1067
After Ifrit
Ifrit was extinguished, but the flames around her weren’t. Zaya shuddered, skin crawling along the edges of new burns, and she breathed in
Ifrit was extinguished, but the flames around her weren’t.
Zaya flopped onto her back. She ignored the way her skin crawled along the edges of new burns, how warm her chainmail felt above the protective padding, the odd angle her tail was caught in beneath her. She just wanted to revel on the feeling of being alive. A victory song warbled out of cracked lips, and she licked them to sooth the sting.
A mistake.
Zaya coughed and gagged as ash and blood coated her tongue. She rolled onto her side, curling into a shaking, shuddering ball despite how much her body did not want her moving right now. Pressing her scarf to her nose, Zaya tried to focus on the faint scent of Tataru’s preferred soap rather than smoke. Her breathing slowly evened out, but it only made the ache in her throat – her hands – her chest – her aether – so much worse. Aether that flared in animal terror as the sound of footsteps reached her horns. Pain was pushed aside as Zaya rolled to find her katana.
The footsteps grew faster, closer.
No, no more – not again!
A whine escaped a tight throat. Her katana appeared under a scrabbling hand, still smouldering from Ifrit’s last strike, and Zaya forced herself to her feet. She darted towards the cavern entrance – towards those footsteps – and at this speed, it didn’t matter that her arms were shaking. Her sword still struck true.
Or at least, it would have. If her target was anyone but Thancred.
The pale-haired man yelped, eyes wide, and caught the blow with his own sword. “Zaya – Zaya, it’s me! It’s Thancred!”
Her mind knew this. It recognised the strange mask on his shoulder, the curling red markings on his neck, the steady sand-over-bedrock of his aetheric signature. But her body didn’t. Her body was still primed for battle. Like this, Thancred wasn’t a safe haven – he was another enemy to defend against, to defeat before he could tear and burn and hurt her. She delivered another crushing blow, sending the man sliding to the side.
“It’s me, Zaya, calm down!”
It’s Thancred, it’s Thancred, her mind hummed, safe-steady-warm.
It’s an enemy, it’s an enemy, her mind yelled, hurt-pain-no-more!
Zaya flipped backwards out of reach, scrabbling at the drained well of her aether reserves. If she could just conjure a shield – heal the wound dripping blood into her boot – catch him in Higanbana –
“Zaya!” Thancred seemed to appear out of nowhere. Air that was once empty was no longer so. Her katana was flicked from her hand. A strong arm wrapped around her waist, lifting her over a hip and slamming her to the ground. Zaya snarled, tail whipping out and around to slam against a restraining leg. Above her came a muffled curse, but she was too busy trying to fight against the forearm stretched across her collarbone, hands clawing at wrist and elbow. Another hand grasped her chin.
“Look at me, Zaya – look at me!”
It was the smell that cut through the panic. Fresh cut wood, Thanalan dust, perfume. “Th-thancred?” The fight went out of her. Limbs went limp. Eyelids began to flutter. Every injury seemed to catch up with her at once, pulsing through her body. A whimper rang through her teeth as her body tensed again. Thancred put more pressure on her chest, legs shifting to better pin hers, hand moving to restrain the end of her tail.
“I – I’m okay, daijoubu,” Zaya relaxed her grip on Thancred and tilted her head forward, breathing in the pine and sand and flower scent, only to flinch from the blood that smeared across her jaw – blood that wasn’t hers. “Daijoubu desu ka, ah, are you – are you okay? Did I hurt you?”
“It’s alright, just a scratch,” Thancred soothed, slowly releasing her from the pin to kneel at her side. “Are you back with me now?”
Zaya nodded, leaning back into his supporting hands as he pulled her upright. Head heavy, she couldn’t help but slump forward into Thancred, pressing her face into that space between his neck and shoulder. Mmmm, so warm… The thump-thump of his heartbeat was just wonderful against her horn, and she couldn’t help but tilt her head into it, rubbing scar and scale into the softness of his shirt. Her own racing heart began to slow.
“Whoa there!” Thancred seemed startled by her actions, but not annoyed, given the way he curled an arm around her back. “Don’t go passing out on me now,” he said, “We should get you back to Camp Drybone.”
A grumble vibrated in her chest. Don’t wanna move… Her hand left red and black streaks where she clutched his shirt, and she hummed an apology. Still didn’t want to get up though.
Thancred’s grip changed to resting against her back to being tucked under her arms, and Zaya growled as the man stood, dragging her along. She let her body go limp. Showing off a strength hidden by his loose clothes and charming smiles, Thancred held Zaya straight out from his body like a disgruntled cat. Her feet dangled a good foot from the ground, and she kicked them half-heartedly. Her tail drew little squiggles in the sand. Thancred had a look on his face like he was trying very, very hard not to smile.
“Are you going to keep being difficult?” He asked.
Zaya frowned. “Y’don’t have to help me,” she rumbled, “I can get back to camp. In a little bit… after I’ve had a nap.
“Uh huh.” Thancred did not seem convinced. He sighed. “Alright, c’mon.”
Zaya didn’t protest as the man drew her in closer, gladly curling arms, legs and tail in against the warmth, but grumbled loudly when he tried to move her elsewhere.
“I’m trying to help you, you silly lizard,” Thancred said, pulling and pushing her limbs until she was curled up against his back, rather than his front. Blood spread across his white shirt, and Zaya pawed at it.
“Sorry ‘bout y’shirt,” she slurred into his collar, “Clean it f’you later, p’omise.”
“Just don’t go falling asleep back there,” Thancred said, deliberately shuffling the grip he hand on her thighs, “And try not to let your tail trip me up, will you?”
To be continued... when I don't have to go to work

Were there any barriers to you establishing your OCs relationship? Perhaps social or cultural stigma? Or a concern that "ships" with that character were already overdone? Or simply a fear of being seen as "cringe"? If so then how did you overcome this?
Ohhh now this is a good one, as this is something that I’ve been told, that I have inspired others to “overcome their fears” of shipping based on certain stigmas in the FFXIV fandom, so let’s get into it shall we? Oh and I will apologize in advance, as this WILL get long.
The Stigmas
Hali x Aymeric

So for Hali x Aymeric, the obvious stigma is that Hali is a lalafell, and Aymeric is not. Though I’ve seen lately that this stigma has waned a bit, especially here on Tumblr where people who infantilize lalas don’t seem to last long, but keep in mind that there is still plenty of lala infantilism on the bird app and other places like Reddit and in game.
For my main ship, that is really the only thing that I see that makes the ship “problematic” to some in the fandom; some people still see lalafells as “child-coded”, despite lalafells being a fantasy race of little people, no different to gnomes, hobbits, dwarves, etc. in other fantasy media, and despite the in game world treating lalafellin adults the same as any other race.
Yume x Zenos
(Yume’s blog: @firelightmuse)

So for Yume x Zenos, but also to a lesser extent Urania (Hali’s Azem) x Hermes, and my other secret ship that I haven’t revealed yet because it’s still in development, these ships fall into the category of being “problematic” because they are Hero x Villain ships at their core, and because Zenos, Hermes, and the secret ship partner are all major antagonists in the story, they have many haters.
Now there isn’t anything wrong with not liking certain characters, as I truly think we all have certain characters that we just don’t vibe with for one reason or another. But there is a problem, however, when people go after villain shippers just because they happen to not like those characters.
Just like with the Lala infantilism problem, villain ships get a lot of hate in the fandom, but for different reasons. I would guess that the main reason is the haters assume that villain shippers either don’t see that the villains have done bad things and/or try to minimize or excuse the villains’ bad behavior. Now I won’t say that there aren’t a few people out there who will truly excuse a villain’s bad behavior and try to make them out to not be as bad of a person as they are written in canon. But I really do think that there’s not as many of them as the haters are likely to believe.
Remember: just because someone is a fan of a villain doesn’t mean they agree with their actions, and a writer is NOT the same as their character. For example, Yume may minimize and/or downright ignore all of the pain and suffering Zenos has inflicted upon not only her, but innumerable others, doesn’t mean that I as Yume’s writer share the same views. I actually consider Yume to ride the thin line between anti-hero and villain herself, just so y’all know.
How to Overcome the Stigmas
So now that the individual stigmas of each of my ships have been outlined, how did I overcome the stigmas? And how difficult was it for me to do?
Well, if you’ve followed me for several years already, you might’ve seen that Hali, my lala WoL, is not the first WoL I have written. That honor goes to Yume, who is a Raen Au Ra and she doesn’t come with the same stigma that Hali does as a lalafell. So I had the privilege for several years of being able to write Yume without the infantilism that Hali would have to fight against in the fandom. But those years gave me enough courage in my own writing to create Hali and to fend off the stigma of lala x non-lala shipping and my own insecurities surrounding it.
Though it was difficult, and it took me a long time to do so, I eventually realized that I was happier and way more fulfilled when I wrote what I wanted to and not what I thought my followers or my friends or anyone else wanted. Trust me, I tried more “popular” and less “problematic” ships before, and even though they were nice at the time, I ultimately dropped them because I realized that I didn’t feel fulfilled, and that I was scared to write for more “problematic” ships because I feared the backlash.
One HUGE thing that I highly recommend is to find yourself a good support system to surround yourself with. Whether that be reaching out to your mutuals here on Tumblr or joining discord servers with like minded individuals, having people there who can help you through your journey in shipping will help greatly! Trust me, I wouldn’t be where I am today without my support system to be there for me when I’m having a bout of anxiety and/or insecurity with my writing.
Another thing that I highly recommend you do is to Unfollow, Hide, and/or Block haters liberally!! Please, it’s for your own mental health and wellbeing to do so! If you’re wanting to ship your lala oc for example, never hesitate to block the lala haters out there! No good will come from seeing the hate all over your feed, because it will just bring you down.
That’s about all I have for now. If you have any other questions on this subject, please do not hesitate to send me a message, DM, or ask!! I am always happy to help with any questions or advice when it comes to shipping! Thank you so much @mimble-sparklepudding for the ask, and thank you all for reading this very long winded answer!! 💖

FFXIV Write 2024 Day 22: Extra Credit (Revelation)
Content Warning: Fantasy racism and referenced suicide.
---
Tina is one year old when her father leaves Werlyt, a tiny curled figure nestled in the sling under his jacket, while her mother's body is thrown to an unmarked grave. One and a half, when her other father is assigned to Victor's unit. (She is three when they finally kiss and four when Akitsu realizes he's a father. Both her dads are rather slow on the uptake.)
She's two when Victor starts taking her to the Populares meetings. She is the only Au Ra there - noncitizens know better than to get involved with this kind of thing, at least publically. At the start Victor assumes it's because they don't care, because they just want to live their lives without involving themselves with politics.
But he sees how they look at Tina. How they talk to him, like he's some great hero for rescuing this unwashed urchin and selflessly caring for her on his own, as if a child who is allegedly the result of a Garlean pureblood and a Raen local is a great burden he's taken on himself. They say words meant as compliments that feel like a slap in the face. As if Victor could have done better, and had refused to, out of the nobility of his heart.
Victor's daughter is not a burden. She is his salvation. It is as if a veil was before his eyes, blending everything into a pleasant but bland blur, and Tina's little fingers had ripped it from his face. What once was background noise now jumps out at him over and over, the ways little and large that the Empire clearly states 'you do not belong here'.
The Populares speak of liberation for the noble races, and for Au Ra too. Victor is constantly adjusting the clothes they give her, cutting holes for tails and horns. She comes home from the nursery so proud to show him how she's memorized the entire provincial anthem in Old Garlean - she knows his native tongue, and he will never know hers.
Tina is five, and sleeping peacefully on her cot across the room, when Akitsu curls up next to Victor on the bed and whispers the tale of how he came to be the property of the Garlean Empire.
How his father had so proudly dressed him in the family armor, only to find the Empire was on Doma's doorstep. How he'd been sent to fight off their oppressors, or else to die on the battlefield, and when that failed to at least deny the enemy the right to capture him. How young Akitsu could not even manage the courage to achieve that much, his hand trembling too much to press the sword into his own flesh when all his fellows ended their lives with honor. Victor presses his face to Akitsu's broad ruddy chest and tries not to weep for the way Akitsu's heart was burned out of him before he was even a man.
It seemed rude to weep when Akitsu could not.
The Populares speak of power and powerlessness at their meetings. They draw diagrams of all the ways that a face with a third eye can grasp what is forever denied to a face with horns. For Tina's sake and for Akitsu Victor tries to memorize them. He has no ambitions of societal change, of throwing his pathetically small body against the unstoppable might of an Empire. All he has is the tiny patch he's carved out, the three feet by eight feet of his bedroom, just big enough to fit three bodies and their spare belongings.
What little power he has, he will wield for them. When the Bozjan front needs medics Victor ensures that Akitsu is assigned as his personal assistant, unheeding that this means another will be assigned to that cold and miserable tundra in Akitsu's place. He makes up tasks so that Tina can assist him when she's big enough to clean floors and carry supplies.
When she is ten, Doma revolts. It is the second revolt, and Akitsu is silent for two days as the battle rages on. Doma's first revolt turned a wave of brutality upon the country and Victor wishes he could scream at them to stop, to give up, to just do the best they can with what they've got so that Akitsu will no longer feel the weight of their suffering upon them.
And then, somehow, Doma wins. And so does Ala Mihgo, turning back the tide with the aid of the unconquerable savages of Eorzea and the Azem Steppe. At the Populares meeting, flyers are given out announcing that the Empire is planning a prisoner exchange with Doma, and those conscripts taken from Doma's land should report to their superior and apply for transfer.
It takes all Victor's control, all his power, to give Akitsu the flyer. To show him that after 25 years, there's a way out. The needy part of him screams that Akitsu needs to stay, that Tina needs him, that Victor needs him.
