Alright, I’ve been seeing a joke floating around here and elsewhere about Calyx being “11”, and I didn’t want to high jack someone else’s post, so let me just be a bit nitpicky for a moment.

Though I’ve only went through the cutscenes once so far, my understanding was that Calyx was 11 only when Sphene first met Calyx when he founded Preservation, but then Sphene states after that Preservation was founded sometime before Sphene’s parents died and she became Queen, which she was 15 when that happened (she says this in 7.2). Then it was some years later that she was put into stasis and her Endless self was made. We know that Calyx was still “alive” through all of this due to the fact that his memories show the height of the storm surge and all that, when Sphene was the Queen.

What all this means is that Calyx had to have been a bit older when he became an Endless himself, and I’m going to assume that Calyx and Sphene were around the same age. They haven’t stated yet what their exact ages were when Sphene was put into stasis or when Calyx becomes an Endless, but neither of them would have been 11 years old anymore.

Edit: Changed my wording describing the post I am responding to, because I didn’t want to have it taken out of context, as I was not trying to insult the post in anyway. I was merely trying to explain that the post was in a joking manner, but it still seemed to have the connotation that Calyx is 11 years old as a fact.

I also have been told that there’s additional information on this topic in the data entries throughout the 7.3 dungeon, but I haven’t read them all personally as I was not running the dungeon on duty support. So all of my evidence for this is from the MSQ cutscenes only.

I think one of my biggest complaints about 7.3 is how they hype Sphene up as a healer but then she's not available as a healer for duty support

Who dropped the ball on that one

Was it just laziness? Are healers harder to program

Patch 7.3 MSQ: My Reactions and Thoughts on Pre-8.0 and Beyond

So if you are reading this, then you already know the main thing I was worried about…

CALYX LIVES!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉

OMG I was squealing so loud at the very last cutscene, and I’m so so happy that not only Calyx lives, but that we are left with more questions than answers. It’s so exciting and I can’t wait to see what 8.0 will be about! But let me back up a bit and talk about the MSQ as a whole.

The Story

So overall I loved how 7.3 was executed, and I loved this ending so much more than how they ended 7.0. There are still some things that I could nitpick, like how I still really didn’t feel connected to the Alexandrians and their plight, but the tension with how Calyx was using the mechanical soldiers to murder the people without regulators, that was excellent. It really felt like a moment of horror like we’ve had in previous expansions, and I thought that was done so well.

Though I wasn’t really emotionally attached to Geode, I thought that the lead up to his death, his death scene, and the Oblivion members mourning him afterwards was done well, and that I got sad because they were so upset over his death. It felt similar to Haurchefant’s death, except for us being the ones to mourn, we are there for Oblivion and comforting them in their grief.

Another highlight was the fact that, even though the devs are never going to officially say it, but I got major shippy vibes between Wuk Lamat and Sphene. In 7.2, it seemed like Wuk Lamat was still grieving for the Endless Sphene, as the Simulant pointed it out clearly, but I liked how it seemed like the feelings have grown between Wuk Lamat and the real Sphene now. Of course you don’t have to see their affection as romantic, but I did enjoy seeing their bond grow and it feels good that we can leave Tural knowing that they both will be there for each other. I still had hoped that Sphene would join us in 8.0 least, but alas that’s not the case.

One of the highlights of the patch for me was the point and click mystery section of the MSQ when we were searching through the Preservation labs for evidence of Calyx’s whereabouts. I LOVED it, and I hope we get to do more of that kind of questing in the future. It felt fresh and exciting, and whoever came up with that idea, kudos to them!

Heh, and I can’t continue on with my reactions without mentioning THIS moment:

Besides the last cutscene, it’s the best moment of the 7.3 MSQ! I never laughed so hard in all of Dawntrail!! And yeah, I actually had a friend send me this screenshot on Discord and said they found my locker…. Hey, Director Demetrius and I just have similar tastes! ((Oof but that hentai protagonist hair Demetrius had in that flashback… that made him even creepier to me.))

Oh and the dungeon and trial were both fantastic! I had guessed that it would be Necron for the longest time, with the themes of Dawntrail being identical to what Necron represents and all, so I wasn’t surprised, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The dungeon was challenging for sure, and the trial was so much fun.

Okay, I’ve danced around with talking about everything else, but let’s get to the main thing. Likely why you’re here even reading my reactions. My thoughts on Calyx.

Calyx

Well, Calyx is definitely my new favorite character. He has exceeded my expectations, and I am so excited to see what 8.0 ((and beyond?? If he lives that long??)) has in store for him and how he will want to come after us with a vengeance. I think in terms of the kind of villain he is, he’s a complete breath of fresh air. They even set it up for him to have this big tragic backstory, but he’s not up there whining about it and trying to make us care about his plight or anything of the sort. Nope, instead, he’s cold, calculating, no nonsense, and all about business. He just wants to get the key from the WoL at all costs and he doesn’t care how many people he will have to kill to get it. He’s not emotionally attached to the Alexandrian people like the Unsundered Ascians were to the Ancients or the Unsundered World. Nope, Calyx really does not give a shit. He only cares about his research, and if he has to kill Alexandrians to do so, so be it. I enjoyed how cocky and overconfident he got as he summoned Necron and how he brought it back after we “killed it” and explained how that now it has felt death, it’s even stronger than before. I think Necron was a great twist on what a primal entity could be, and Calyx being the mastermind behind it was so good.

Now I squealed when they showed him alive and he was able to transfer himself before the core of the Meso Terminal was destroyed. The reveal that he had begun to feel his heart beating, his lungs breathing heavily, and that he was sweating, and then his fear of death and his anger at the WoL was wonderful! It just made him even more intriguing to me, and I have my own theories about that specifically, but I’ll get into it in a separate theory post.

Also, I knew it!!! It knew Ascians would be involved in some way!! I have my theory on that aspect, along with the “Winterer” peers and all of that, so I’ll put that in the separate theory post as well. ((Hint: I’m calling it that Calyx is actually Halmarut and he might have been talking to Pashtarot, but that’s all I’ll say for now!))

Personal Stuff AKA: Future of my Ships

And with the ending of Dawntrail and all of the reveals we got from Calyx, I realized that I don’t think my Sohna/Calyx ship is going to work. Sohna was never meant to be a WoL, so I went through the patch thinking that she would not be a good fit for Calyx. Instead, I kept getting the feeling that Calyx would feel a love/hate thing for Hali, and I think that’d be way more interesting for me to explore. So I have ideas about how I’m going to handle the fallout from this. I also think I’m going to put not only Sohna, but Keir’s development on the back burner for now. I don’t think Hali/Keir will work with that I want to explore with Hali/Calyx. Hali is still with Aymeric canonically ((for now??? I guess we’ll see what happens in 8.0!)) and I don’t think I’ll canonically have Keir there at all, unless I change my mind on that at a later date.

For now though, Sohna won’t have a ship, but my ships going forward will be Yume/Zenos, Bellini/Alphi, Hali/Aymeric, Urania (Hali’s Azem)/Hermes, and complicated love/hate feelings for Calyx towards Hali.
