Sebastian was supposed to be slaughtered like most pigs, at six months old. Luckily for him, a compassionate young woman ended up in an FFA class at her high school and fell in love with him. After raising him for six months and getting to know him as an individual person, she raised the money to buy him from the school before the fair and wrote a letter to Blackberry Creek for help. After the fair, the rest of Sebastian’s friends went to a slaughterhouse to have their body parts shipped all over California labeled as “humanely raised organic” meat. Sebastian came to the sanctuary, rolled in mud for the first time, explored the forest, and met his best friend, Mo. He is now two and a half years old and still young for a pig. We are so grateful for his human mom, Audori, and her mom, Shalese, who supported her decision to save him. SURPRISE! Wilbur and Yazzy were just rescued thanks to four compassionate FFA students!!! They are on their way to beautiful lives at sanctuaries instead of slaughter. These two six-month-old cuties will be staying with us for the next week before heading to UCD to be spayed (yes, Wilbur is a female too). Then they are on their way to two different NorCal sanctuaries who will be announcing their arrivals soon! We adore them already and are so happy to be their foster family! Our rescue and medical fund will be helping to spay Yazzy and provides food, transport, bedding, and care for the time they’re with us. Occasionally we get emails from FFA or 4H students asking if we want to purchase their pig for meat; they’ve somehow seen the “farm” in our name and gotten confused about who we are and what we do here. When that happens, we always reply kindly, explain the mission of sanctuaries, and share Sebastian’s story with them. In 2017 when a young woman named Audori chose to raise the money to buy her pig from the school’s FFA program and send him to Blackberry Creek instead of the slaughterhouse, @nosh.on.plants made a video of the experience. We always send that video along with the message that it’s never too late for students in these programs to change and save their beloved animal’s life instead of betraying them and sending them to their death. Sebastian will celebrate his fourth rescueversary with us this July and would have been killed at only six months old in the FFA program.
