Hiya! I notice you’ve played a lot of dnd rangers just like me! I wanted to ask what draws you towards the class? what do you enjoy about the class? And what do you think is the classes identity what makes a ranger ?

I’ve played swarmkeeper feywanderer horizon walker drakewarden and gloomstalker, I’m drawn towards the class in part because I’m a Ranger irl it’s my day job, but I also love the jack of all trades support vibe of the class it doesn’t excel anywhere but can help every class with a little bit of something and I view the classes identity as the professional adventurer someone who spends their life balancing the threats of the world whether that be the threats of the wild the monsters who inhabit it or the people who cross it, balancing their needs, kinda like Geralt of rivia balancing the needs of “monsters” and people, they work to make the world a safer better place picking up whatever skills and magic help them survive, I also note that every dnd class is either some form of Hunter or Tamer, the gloomstalker, horizon walker ,hunter and monster slayer, hunt the creatures of the wild, while the drakewarden, the swarmkeeper, the beast master and the fey wanderer spend their time befriending and taming the monsters of the wild. I don’t mean to answer my own question but I’m interested as someone who’s played the ranger just as much as me how your opinions may differ (I also especially love your borrower style ranger the little fellow is so cute and very well drawn)

hi!! Fun fact, i actually havent played any rangers 🥴 I'm the kinda dnd player who plays in like 2-3 campaigns but makes like 50 ocs. ASDFJKSDJF (I've only played a cleric and a barbarian in campaigns, but for oneshots I've tried every race) Id love to play one, but its kinda hard to do that for a oneshot since so much of the ranger class is dependent on favoured terrain/knowing your surroundings and levelling.

This is SUCH a fun ask because I LOVE the ranger class for its very niche yet versatile character archetype. I think if there's one type of word I could use to describe a ranger is a survivalist — the rangers that I do have, a handful of them are fashioned after Scouts/parkrangers (because....I was one.) or famous character types that do a lot of adventuring like cowboys, pirates, explorers etc. — if I'm being honest, ranger is the most 'adventurer' type there is!

(as a note here, i know pointy hat has mentioned a ranger's big thing was an animal companion -- i think?? IDR -- which is like a fun take. I really like his stuff, but i feel like a class shouldn't be bound to smth like a pet. any class can have pets!)

To use my own as an example, I have a bounty hunter devil cowboy (monster slayer), a princess-mononoke-ish Artemis huntress (hunter), a HouYi type ancient hero with 3-legged crows (swarmkeeper), an Indiana jones style explorerer (horizon walker) and a borrower (beast master). I really love the idea of all of them being really different but all being excellent survivalists and navigators!

Im a big fan of rangers that have fighting styles other than archery too. I think archery is awesome for the fighting style, but having duelist (like the borrower) or dueling (monster hunter) gives it an extra bit of flavour to just "class that wields a bow". it also sets them apart from a fighter bc in my head a fighter is more military while a ranger is more solitary. It establishes them as a martial class for sure, but its so versatile and has that edge that comes with dex-based instead of str-based.

I particularly like monster slayer bc to me that was very like...witcher-y. The cowboy is a monster slayer with favoured foes as humanoids bc he only tracks humanoids (bounties), which is some fun flavouring. There's a lot of customization! To clarify, there's a lot of room for flavour, but not as much choice for character builds (like, mechanically, at least compared to stuff like warlocks.)

The addition of magic also helps give it some class distinction :0

TLDR: mixes the best aspects of rogues and fighters with LOTS of room for flavour text.

my current D&D characters, Palmer and Chess!

palmer was abandoned in the woods and raised in the feywild by sprites. growing up when your entire extended family is ten times smaller than you will do a number on a guy. he became the apprentice of a feywanderer ranger named clancy, eventually following in her footsteps. recent events have left him kind of sort of undead and a warlock to the shade. which will probably be fine!

chess’s mom left ched nasad while she was pregnant with them, so waterdeep is the only home they’ve ever known. he’s a city kid through and through and grew up during the spell plague. after the death of his sailor husband, chess turned to the raven queen and eventually became a cleric about it. despite their generally cheery and clownish disposition, chess lives in grief and believes their purpose in life is solely to remember the dead. now there’s a grand game afoot in waterdeep, and chess has been having visions and feelings not wholly his own. and i cannot stress this enough, i do not know what is wrong with him, my DM is in charge of that!

Me, looking at my half-elf feywanderer ranger who always felt othered amongst elves and is socially awkward, but somehow still manages to charm people: "oh god, they're autistic"

Me, looking at my eladrin horizon walker ranger who is alone in a strange plane with no way home, sticks out like a sore thumb and has 8 charisma: "oh god, he's autistic too"

not vagueposting any specific person btw, its a thing i see semi-frequently. if a caster is going to multiclass into something martial, barbarian is (generally) a Not Ideal Choice since the second you rage all your spellcasting ability goes out the window. SO HERE ARE ALTERNATIVES FOR MARTIAL MULTICLASSING

Fighter: we love action surge we love second wind we love getting a fighting style at first level, plus you only need a 13 in strength OR dexterity so its likely you dont need to do a lot of stat shuffling to make a fighter dip work

Battlemaster: you get Options for what you do in a fight using all your maneuvers, AND not every maneuver is a combat thing! maneuvers like Tactical Assessment and Commanding Presence are nice for little boosts on ability checks and Rally lets you give some temp HP to a nearby ally

Eldritch Knight: good choice for casters already built on INT since now you have all your nice fighter things And some extra cantrips and spell slots. you can also summon your weapon to your hand on a bonus action, which is Sick

Samurai: some extra proficiencies are nice, and Fighting Spirit ability means you can use your bonus action to give yourself advantage on an attack! lovely!

Ranger: i prefer fighter over ranger since ranger imo takes more investment But if it works for character plot and youre already a dex+wis build then ranger isnt so bad, you just gotta get 2 levels if you want a fighting style

its hard to give subclass reccomendations since what works for your ranger dip depends so much on the character imo. like Feywanderer and Horizon Walker dont make sense for every character but if they Do work for a character then 👀

Gloomstalker lets you be batman and Monster Slayer lets you be real good at killing shit

How to end up getting one of your friends absolutely screwed over in a dnd game

Step 1: Make a ranger with high wisdom as your first ever pc

Step 2: Notice we don't have a dedicated face who can can make session and/or is confident irl

Step 3: Decide to go feywanderer as his subclass

Step 4: Have your friend join the campaign with a satyr bard who is the definition of cringefail bisexual man

Step 5: Write an extremely evil family of archfey connected to your pc's family to justify the feywanderer

Step 6: Watch your dm go "yeah we can get silly with Them"

Step 7: Cut to two years later, when your feywanderer and his boyfriend have been temporarily retired as characters and are trying to revive their gf (even longer story)

Step 8: Said satyr bard also gets temporarily retired and searches for the two of them

Step 9: "Hey Magic, could I make a deal with Her to find out where the two of them are?" Step 10: oh shit Step 11: Cut to a discord call a week later between me, the friend, and the DM

Step 12: Watch a man offer "anything" to a fey and die inside a little List of things Ginkgo has currently given up, which Wit can take at any time (there is more): - his music - changing his appearance in minor ways - two of his memories - a mimic of his voice - a functionally infinite IOU

a lot of things have happened in campaign since I last Achillesposted (we moved on from act 1 to act 2!!! which is uh. already almost over.) so it's time for a new ref!!

if ur curious, here's a few of said things that have happened!! they got a mimic pet (which turned out to be a familiar of Odin), became an official ally of the fey, reascended to godhood, came back to the material plane (where over 70 years had passed (thank you feywild)), got married, killed a kraken, etc etc :3

Cleric: grave domain bc that's cool

Druid: ik ik that spores is the gothy druid subclass, but nothing beats circle of dreams for miss blendy

Fighter: cavalier, probably

Monk: way of the long death

Paladin: oath of devotion

Ranger: feywanderer, babey

Rogue: uhhhh.... Uhhh...... Hmmm.... I'd love to say arcane trickster but that subclass feels more whimsical than she is. Phantom is more likely

Sorcerer: aberrant mind, unfortunately

Warlock: unfortunately probably great old one. It's a tragedy for me, personally, because we all know I'll make it about nirvana somehow. tfw ur patron is your trauma

Here’s some basic information if you want more it’s under the read more

In normal text it's Nick, “me”, you can assume it's me if there's no other indication in the tags if i think it's necessary i’ll add Nk: in the tag to clarify it's him speaking.

In red and/or cursed we got Azerium, the demon, in the tags i’ll lead with Az: if he’s saying it.

Green is the overworked and tired Berrian, half-elf feywanderer ranger, Br: in the tags

And finally in golden text it's Amashiel, the angel, going by Am: in the tags.

Boreon is a ghost with ice powers

Sol is some kind of sun spirit

And Cinys is a lying manipulative ash demon

All of us (except Cinys) are no longer sharing my body, still sharing the account though it is an rp thing it's just me playing them they're not actually living in my head

Alright time to introduce them properly

Let’s start with “me” Nick(this is me for all intents and purposes, no this is not my real name but you may address me as such), he/him pronouns (at least at the moment i don’t really know my own gender or sexuality so the best you can get out of me regarding my oc’s is pronouns), okay so he’s kinda stuck in a roguelite-like kind of loop spanning the entire life of the multiverse, link here if i ever write that down, he's an inter dimensional gaurdian but he can’t really use his powers at the moment (don’t tell the-crimson-river-society or florida, i’m trying to keep up appearances), the only one with common sense and enough self restraint to not stab people, has the most control over who gets the body, still ends up sleep deprived despite only needing two hours of sleep, likes milk chocolate, doesn’t like swearing and is currently playing host to an angel and a demon but probably more somewhere down the line.

Okay onto Azerium, the living blade, as they like to call themself, a demon straight from hell and actually got banished from there for promoting the idea to kill all the damned souls now, since they would end up down there anyways, it didn't help that he’s a halfbreed, a result of a succubus and a fallen angel, which makes him the lowest ranked demon in hell even below puny imps, pronouns are he/they, might look like they’ll go apeshit but will actually sit down and let you cry your emotions out before setting the responsible party's house on fire hopefully with them in it, only wants to kill the damned souls, supports the lgbtq+ with pure chaos energy especially the arsonists, somehow pretty good and responsible with kids, also the one who usually gets us out of trouble, he’s the only one with actual combat training and is also training us, absolutely loves duels and fights especially if there’s swords involved, despite having wings he can’t actually fly, has a tiefling like prehensile tail, likes dark chocolate, swears the most easily out of us and often takes over to have Nick not swear.

Now for the angel Amashiel, protector of the innocent, got kicked out of heaven by the archangels because she wanted to guide humanity instead of simply sitting back and letting them figure out their own problems, may look like a cinnamon bun but will absolutely go on a crusade should someone hurt one of their friends or loved ones, also has only one brain cell which is mostly occupied with figuring out how absolutely everything works, might make it as an technician if she remembers to unplug whatever they are dismantling, initially disliked Azerium but now they quarrel like siblings, somehow the more vengeful of the two, also the more annoying one, we call her Ames, might look like the team mom but is somehow the most irresponsible one out of us, they almost got us electrocuted twice already, also not good with kids, inexplicably has sparkles appear whenever they are in control, she's also british somehow, hard to piss off even harder to calm down, likes white chocolate and pronouns are she/they.

Fun tidbit, apparently chocolate is a very good substitute for prayers and whatever the heck demons get their powers from, screams, terror, human souls? nah it’s just terror if we used human souls for power we’d run out of ones to torture Oh alright!

Quick rundown of abilities and powers:

Nick: having a body, knowing how the human world works, phoenix fire healing power, being the best host an angel could pray for, thanks ames, having potential as an eldritch knight, creating and stabilising portals, being able to go into a trance like state and keeping all the other ones on track.

Azerium: being able to transform his arms into tentacle blades, fighting skills, having a prehensile tail, being able to set his hands on fire and simple curse magic. i also have my own blog now @azerium don't tell the other

Amashiel: creating force fields, simple healing and blessing magic, flight and emitting enough light to rival a lighthouse.

Together we got resistance to non supernatural damage and a downright immunity to fire, also only needing two hours of sleep a day.
