festival research: Graphic Design Festival Scotland (gdfs)
CONTINUED
much like it's location, the creators of gdfs change the identity of the festival every year across their website, socials, campaigns, print, digital and the environment.
‘In the name of innovation and collaboration within an industry which is always changing, we invited our friends at Freytag Anderson to work with us on the identity and campaign – embodying the collaborative attitude of the festival.’ - https://warriorsstudio.com/work/graphic-design-festival-scotland-16
despite having an appreciation and adoration towards the concept, initially I found it very difficult to connect the dots and recognise the festival as one single event; I quickly became very confused as to whether I was researching the same festival.
I feel as though this could have been solved by a single, consistent element that is repeated throughout. by no means would it have to be the focus of the identity, but more of an indication that despite all the changes, it is all 'under one roof' which is the graphic design festival scotland.

‘The festival is a platform for creative expression and experimentation, so we recognised that the identity should capture those same processes’ - https://warriorsstudio.com/work/graphic-design-festival-scotland-16
this identity highlights the unpolished processes of design, from breaking the grid to messy desktop screenshots; the opposite of the final outcome we are used to seeing.
the use of colour, repetitive shapes and other design elements collectively create a sense of movement and visual vibration within the branding. this chaotic collage appears active, alive and full of energy, likely to suggest the atmosphere and jam-packed programme of the festival.
2018 GDFS IDENTITY

celebrating the 5th year of gdfs in 2018, the idea behind this identity was to combine ‘visual language and the rituals of a 5 year old’s birthday party’; ‘exploring silly and serious at the same time’ -https://warriorsstudio.com/work/gdfs18
James Gilchrist, co founder of gdfs described the identity as ‘following and breaking the rules at the same time’, evident for example, by the unexpected use of clashing typefaces.
comparing it to 2016, the identity follows a more minimalistic approach allowing easier navigation through the website, and less distracting elements to highlight the contents and important information about the festival.

BRANDING SUMMARY VIA WARRIOR STUDIOS.COM:
‘For the branding and campaign, we exposed the simple, manipulative mechanics of corporate advertising and utilised them critically and unashamedly.’ - https://warriorsstudio.com
‘Do you love sunsets, sandy beaches, cold ice cream, cute puppies, smiling faces and romantic sunsets? Don't we all. Feel good. Buy tickets.’ - https://warriorsstudio.com
I personally adore this identity, oozing the feeling of comfort, familiarity and good times which instantly engages the audience with the things they can relate to. despite this, I must admit it took me quite a while to recognise this as the graphic design festival scotland! the website landing page has no mention of the festival therefore, unless you were aware of gdfs’s annual identity switch you might question whether you were at the right place.
RESEARCH REFLECTION
from my research, I've been inspired to never feel ‘stuck’ with an uninspiring identity. as a designer I frequently look back on my previous work and criticise what I would change, with the knowledge I have now. GDFS has shown me you can be playful by updating how your identity is perceived to match your constant evolution as a designer.
with this in mind, having researched the festival with no prior knowledge this highlighted the importance of developing a single repetitive element to prevent any potential confusion.

Festival Teaser Trailer Development
As part of the brief, I was tasked to create a short 10 second teaser for the festival. Firstly I had the idea to use a time-lapse of Brighton with the relevant information appearing in a sequence, however after doing this time lapse I decided this wasn't the best way forward as the footage was too fast and was a bad quality if slowed down. That being the case I drew up a quick storyboard to put down my ideas and used Adobe After Effects to create my teaser. Screenshots of the storyboard and development can be seen below.
