Summary:

The story of "Embarrassing Journey to the West" focuses on the little goblin "Zhazha" mobilizing all the major demon kings to defeat Tang Monk. So, I've watched the two series and I'm trying to read the books but ... I'm having a little trouble about some things. So, questions! Both on books and on the TV series.What exactly is Dong Hua Dijiun? From what I understand he has brought together and pacified the various kingdoms but ... he is not the creator, right? There is a "Divinity", someone more powerful than he has created the whole, would be the father of Mo Yuan?

How many and which clans exist?

At one point in 3L3WPB SiMing says that he controlled their fate and that they weren't meant to be together, but there is nothing with the Rock of the Thrice, right? That was one storyline that wasn't part of the Canon, right?(I admit that this thing of the 2 TV series has me very confused since in one they do things and in the other there is no mention of it. luckily I landed here!)

As for the future ... Hem, I know the next books are all about other poies but, we'll see / read more about Dong Hua Dijiun and Bai Fengjiu, right? They won't leave us completely in the dark what happens to them? And, will there be more Drama there? That is, will they continue to shoot TV series about this universe, with the same actors? Why, I admit that I have a very slight crush on Vengo Gao in the role of Dong Hua.

     First off, wow, you really beat even Admin Ro out for length here. That’s wild. Second off, I’ll be answering these questions in the order which you asked them, so here goes!

     1) Donghua Dijun is an ancient god born out of the spiritual energy of the universe. Nourished by the springs of Bi Hai Cang Ling, it’s said he bust out of a rock fully formed as a kid. He wasn’t the head of the fight that brought together and pacify the various kingdoms, even if he was part of that fight and commanded armies in it. That distinction goes to Mo Yuan, god of war. But - no, Donghua is not the creator of the universe. According to origin myth, if we have to trace a rough creator, that would be God Pangu. Father God (father of Mo Yuan, as you put it) is a god that came after that and raised the mountains and the seas out of the created universe.

     2) At the beginning of the universe there were five clans in existence in the Four Seas and Eight Wildernesses: the Celestial Clan, the Demon Clan, the Ghost Clan, the Sprite Clan and the Human Clan. Then, with some passage of events, the Human Clan was sent to the ten billion mortal realms apart from the realms. 

     3) The Stone of Three Lifetimes (rough translation directly from the Chinese in my Head) does not, in fact, exist in canon. It was a gimmick specifically designed for DongFeng’s arc in the Peach Blossoms drama, due to the fact that the production team who did that drama did not have the copyright to Pillow Book. In the Pillow Book novel there is a “Fate Stone,” but that stone doesn’t actually dictate anyone’s fate, but rather transcribes it, I guess, is the best way I can explain that? Also Siming doesn’t control the fate of the immortals, he only controls the fate of the mortals.

     4) There’s an extra chapter out right now that tells us what happened to them - to sum up succinctly, Feng Jiu wakes up, and Donghua at the moment is attempting to regain his powers while being with his family by going into secluded cultivation five months out of every year. That translation is still coming but at the moment Admin Ro has a test every week and she can’t spare the brain cells. As for being a part of the other novels - as Lotus Step timeline is currently fifty thousand years before Peach Blossoms even started and nothing else has been written yet, it’s really up in the air. We do know that Lotus Step timeline intersects with Pillow Book timeline (according to the extra, God Zuti has been reinstated to her role ten years after Pillow Book ends), though we have no idea what it means in terms of cameos. In short, as we put in the FAQ - don’t get your hopes up.

     5) Currently there’s been no “next drama” planned because Lotus Step novel isn’t even finished yet. However, I really doubt when/if the next drama is shot, it’ll be with the same cast. An adaptation might take another 3-5 years at least and by then everyone in the current cast might be too old to fit these parts except Yuan Yuxuan, and at that point it’s a question of whether or not she’s gotten popular enough to pull sponsors. Also it’s unlikely that the actors would want to reprise the roles again - Reba (who plays Feng Jiu) was hesitant about taking the Pillow Book script for this reason, and Mark Zhao (who plays Yehua) has straight refused to play Yehua ever again. 

      Vengo...is at a turning point in terms of his career. He’s 38, which really means he’s quickly aging out of “fast” light romance/xianxia romance/historical romance/the like of scripts. What he needs right now are projects that solidify his acting career/serious dramatic roles that look good on a resume that will give him a better pool of future scripts in the ages of 40 and beyond. But yeah, it’s unlikely (and probably not good for his career) for him to be reprising a role in this series.  If you would like to see more of him, please check out Living Toward the Sun, which premiered just last year and also be on the look out for Sword Snow Stride (coming up in 2021).

Syracuse University presents eight models based on a Qing dynasty map of Beijing

An industrial building transformed into a vibrant art gallery and an entertainment centre referencing Russian constructivist architecture are included in Dezeen's latest school show by students at Syracuse University.

Syracuse University presents eight models as part of The Complete Map of Capital Beijing, which is based on a Qing dynasty-era map of the city.

The students initially drew a two-dimensional diorama, then designed architectural models inspired by both Eastern and Western buildings.

School statement:

"In the academic year 2020-2021, Syracuse Architecture offered in-person studios and related courses to more than 100 students unable to return to Syracuse, NY, from China.

"Studios were located in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. In spring 2021, Li Han and Hu Yan led an option studio in Beijing to design 'The Complete Map of Capital Beijing' a large-format diorama based on an original Qing Dynasty era map of the city.

"The diorama consists of a two-dimensional, 1:100 scale 'copy' of an original Qing Dynasty map, drawn by the students, as well as models made by using style-transfer algorithms to collage building sources drawn from both contemporary Western architecture and contemporary Beijing vernacular sources.

"After the final review, the diorama was constructed and exhibited at the Shanzhongtian Art Centre in Beijing in a show curated by renowned curator Cui Cancan."

"Casa de Metallica uses as its source the Umlauftank or 'Pinkpipe' designed by Ludwig Leo built in Berlin in the 1970s. It is designed as a contemporary art gallery for Beijing. The students were intrigued by Leo's use of colour to transform an industrial building situated in a dreary harbour landscape into a playful, vibrant form.

"It breaks from its typological moorings to offer a pop art-inflected alternative where radically different realities can co-exist. Similarly, Casa de Metallica uses the art gallery typology to juxtapose the gritty reality of contemporary life in Beijing with contemporary art practice and art gallery culture."

"The Chamber of Pigeon is a community centre situated in a Hutong area near the Forbidden City in Beijing. Designed as a multi-generational, multi-use facility, the centre embraces the scale and ambience of the Hutong area. It features a tea house and Mahjong parlour on the roof and areas for relaxing and eating.

"The building source is St Peter's Church by Sigurd Lewerenstz, an enigmatic, earthy brick structure built in Malmö, Sweden, in the 1960s. The Chamber of Pigeon is a colourful, playful variation on the church, and features roof windows, doors and brick patterns found in vernacular Hutong structures."

"Similarly to Beijing architect Kauzuo Shinohara's attempt to use architecture to catalogue and connect the proliferating chaos of the city, The Curtained Cave uses the experimental K2 Building 1990.

"Taking inspiration from Shinohara's interest in this chaos, the students made use of two building elements found in many parts of Beijing – illegal balconies and security windows – which then transformed into new building elements.

"Unlike Shinohara, who insisted on a clear distinction between building and city, the students wanted to entangle the city and building, and they did so by including the elements mentioned above as well as bicycles and racks as part of the interior, creating the impression of an interior street."

Neighbour Hood Garden by Zhang Yi and Wang Yuxuan

"Neighbour Hood Garden's inspiration is Robin Hood Gardens, designed by Alison and Peter Smithson and built in 1972. Many features of the Smithson project, including an aerial street, are recognisable in the Neighbour Hood Garden project.

"The ambition is to test such features in the context of 21st century Beijing. Vernacular architecture is also referenced, especially in the building profile, which is recognisable when compared with Dinghuixili, a residential building in Beijing."

"Neo-Forbidden City is a town-scale administrative centre that opens roof paths to the public. The design source is Aldo Rossi's Town Hall of Borgoricco, a masterpiece of post-modern architecture.

"The intention was to design an administrative building that had the authority of civic architecture, but that was also approachable and humble. The design references the Forbidden City and the US White House and other vernacular buildings in Beijing."

Pan' Long Stair Club by Zhuang Kaicheng and Feng Wenting

"The Pan' Long Stair Club, an integrated entertainment centre, features a dance hall, a restaurant and karaoke bar. It uses the Konstantin Melnikov's Rusacov Worker's Club, a constructivist icon built in Moscow in 1928, as its source.

"The design also draws on local building typologies and uses local building elements such as intertwined staircases, which can be found in many Beijing 'Urban Villages' and Hutongs.

"Such features make playful reference to the local context, but they also enhance the experience of those who use the entertainment facilities."

My thoughts on the MV under the cut. I spend a lot of time recapping I know but I just had to type it all out. 

TLDR: That’s not how that works, girl is crazy, I have many questions, THE FRYING PAN.

Honestly when I heard that SNH was filming their summer MV in Thailand, I was thinking more along the lines of what I’m sure Secret Garden will be. I knew they were also filming for the theme song they did for Terminator but…well, I don’t what I thought it would be, but it was not a crossover with Battle Royale and Hunger Games. To be honest, I’m amazed they went with this, it seems like it would be too violent. Then again, there was not much blood, so I guess they get away with it?

When Zhao Yue lands on the beach, we see her looking around anxiously and tugging on the watch on her wrist, but we don’t see her get any kind of notice about what the objective is. I doubt she saw the words “ONLY ONE CAN SURVIVE” while falling from the sky. We know the watches have holographic projectors, maybe we could have seen a count of people on the island and the objective? IDK man.

Liu ShuXian’s death reveals the existence of an electrical barrier around the beach, blocking off the only escape from the island—a lifeboat. The girls seem to fall to the island with meager supplies, the frying pan/skillet that Yue holds up to block Sun Zhenni’s shots most likely belonged to ShuXian. Speaking of, what is that frying pan made of?! THAT’S NOT HOW THAT WORKS.

Interesting that Yue’s first instinct upon seeing ShuXian is to wake her up and not hurt her, but once Zhenni stops firing she smacks that girl into the next election with that frying pan.

Li Yitong reveals her ruthless nature when she shoots Li YuXuan while her hands are up and she’s unarmed. It should be noted that YuXuan had a sniper rifle in her possession, which she could have used to hide away and easily take down the other girls. Yitong uses a smaller gun to subdue and kill YuXuan, showing that even with a powerful weapon, a clueless girl is still at the mercy of more ruthless girls. Yitong’s character is certainly a piece of work, she leans in close to shoot YuXuan, and smiles while waving bye-bye to the “corpse”. I know it’s all pretend but Jehoshaphat, management could have picked someone else?! Is Yitong going to be scheming and murderous in all the dramatic MVs? (cough Dawn in Naples cough).

YuGe, JiaQi, Mo Han, and XiaoYin are part of an ally group. Lu Ting joins (while not-so secretly hiding a gun in her skirt), and it seems like in that moment, JiaQi decides to abandon the alliance, with YuGe following her. They don’t explicitly say they’re leaving for good, and neither of them try to take extra weapons or supplies, but we don’t see them with the other three again. YuGe mouths something as she leaves, I have no idea what it could be.

PS can we talk about how Lu Ting shows up with a machete and a GODDAMN GRENADE IN HER HANDS?! If she was going to backstab Mo Han and XiaoYin later anyway, why not just throw the grenade into the building and get all four out of the way at once?! That was the single biggest alliance/target group in the whole dang island!! Poor planning my dear.

Li YuQi confuses me. Girl’s hunched over like her intestines are about to fall out but the only wound is on her arm. I imagine it would be painful, but she’s…literally doubling over while holding the gun with her injured arm. Like…I have questions.

Feng XinDuo is clearly out of place here, her first instinct is to help the girl with the gun, though being wounded makes YuQi and easy target. She’s also got a backpack that’s full of medical supplies, which would make her a promising ally, or a good target. Rather than shoot XinDuo and take the bag, YuQi just has XinDuo bandage her arm, and then she takes off…only to be shot by Liu Lifei while XinDuo watches in horror. For some reason Lifei is splattered with blood, despite not having obvious wounds and having shot YuQi from a distance. We know for a fact Lifei hasn’t shot anyone else, we’ve seen all the deaths thus far, so whose blood is it? I HAVE QUESTIONS.

Dai Meng has a walkie-talkie. She’s on her own, not part of the only alliance we’ve seen. Who is she going to talk to? Do all the girls have these? I haven’t seen one before. Is she using it to spy on the alliance? Whatever, she hears someone coming and runs. Xie LeiLei appears and Dai Meng hits her over the head with her gun and takes an ammo clip from LeiLei’s belt, but Lifei is around the corner and she shoots Dai Meng, taking that handgun and ammo clip she just got. LeiLei stirs, and Lifei shoots her. But as she walks away, Dai Meng opens her eyes—ah, the walkie-talkie has taken a bullet from a rifle and saved her life. That’s NOT HOW THAT WORKS.

Whatever, it seems to be dusk now and Dai Meng somehow has another gun, a long rifle that she uses as a kind of cane. Apparently her leg is injured, despite the bullet having hit below her armpit. She takes shelter in a dark building and runs into Jiang Shan, who is in no state to be fighting—she’s attempting to kill herself with pills. Dai Meng checks the body count, no change but Jiang Shan is clearly almost dead. So she collapses and falls asleep.

And then Jiang Shan…becomes a zombie. What the heck kinda pills did she take?! She pulls out a knife and staggers to Dai Meng. We hear Dai Meng scream, presumably before Jiang Shan eats her.

The following day (?) Mo Han, XiaoYin, and Lu Ting are looking around and find a place to rest. Lu Ting makes a totally not obvious attempt to steal a gun, but a distant scream makes the girls jump to attention. Whose scream is it, Dai Meng’s? I thought it was dusk/night when Dai Meng died but maybe the building was just super dark. Maybe someone has come across Dai Meng’s zombie-chewed corpse and screamed in terror. Jiang Shan now has super speed, she darts around the other three girls and freaks them out. They decide to move along.

We meet a new alliance consisting of Han JiaLe, Hu XiaoHui, and Li Zi. Li Zi is messing around with a watch (whose watch? I would assume it’s not her own, maybe the watches fall off of the dead bodies), while the other two girls march back and forth with their rifles. Interesting that XiaoHui has a flashlight in her hand, pointed outward, but it’s not turned on. Jiang Shan is nearby, darting around and confusing JiaLe and XiaoHui so much that in their attempts to shoot the intruder, they accidentally shoot and kill each other.

Now Li Zi picks up a small ax, and Jiang Shan appears and tries to stab her. Somehow in the following three second of struggle, Li Zi is shown using both hands to hold her ax up and block Jiang Shan’s knife, then she’s got both hands on Jiang Shan’s shoulders and is pushing her away, then she’s back to holding the ax, then both girls lose their grip on their weapons, and Li Zi’s back to pushing Jiang Shan away. Somebody effed up that editing.

Well, before Jiang Shan can sink her teeth into Li Zi, Yitong appears and kills both girls at once with a single shot. I guess the bullet went through Jiang Shan’s body and into Li Zi’s lungs, because Jiang Shan collapses on Li Zi and we see a trickle of blood leak from Li Zi’s mouth. Again, pretty sure that’s not how that works.

According to the subs, as she walks away Yitong muses, “Even got zombies here, what a fun game.” Girl is crazy.

We get a nice ship moment between Zhao Yue and Feng XinDuo. Yue gives XinDuo a gun, a move that clearly shows she trusts XinDuo not to straight up shoot her.

Then we cut to a firefight between Yang Ye, Xiao WenLing, and Du QiuLin. Yang Ye and Du QiuLin both have helmets and Xiao WenLing has a bulletproof vest, but nothing saves the threesome from Li Yitong’s sniper rifle. I doubt the helmets could withstand the force of a bullet, but it seems like Yitong somehow manages to get Yang Ye right between the eyes.

Yue and XinDuo come across Liu Lifei, slumped against a tree with a hand over her hip and a lone trickle of blood that starts under her lip. I’m not sure if XinDuo recognizes Lifei as the girl who shot Li YuQi, but in any case she starts digging for painkillers. Yue stops her, saying Lifei can’t be saved. But like…where’s her wound? The most obvious bloodstain I see is on her skirt by her hip, did she get shot in the abdomen? I’m not a doctor but I can’t figure how that would get her bleeding from the mouth. Additionally, last time we saw Lifei she had two guns and seemed to be doing pretty well. By this point she’s unarmed, so who attacked her and took her guns? Questions, director, I have questions!!!

Well, Lifei begs Yue to shoot her, so Yue takes one of her handguns, dumps all but one bullet out spins the chamber and hands it to Lifei. And it would be super dramatic if not for the fact that Yue dumped the other bullets out by Lifei’s feet. I mean, girl could easily reload the gun. And shouldn’t Yue have picked up those bullets? Those are valuable! I HAVE QUESTIONS!!!

Lifei shoots herself as XinDuo and Yue walk away. Then we go back to JiaQi and YuGe. I guess the girls aren’t friends anymore, they’re fighting for their lives. Their deaths are dramatic and I guess kinda cool, as cool as death can get, but JiaLe and XiaoHui killed each other at the same time first. And JiaQi’s “death” makes me laugh, I know I can’t expect much but the way she was holding the knife? I can’t.

We meet Bai XinYu and Liu JingHan, and despite this being the first time we run into them they seem to be doing okay? They’ve survived this long, after all. But they get gassed by Kong XiaoYin, Mo Han, and Lu Ting. Was I wrong about the grenade? Was it actually tear gas? But I swear that’s not how tear gas canisters look. Anyway, XinYu gets shot by Mo Han and JingHan has her FREAKING THROAT SLIT BY XIAOYIN HOLY CRAP?!?! DANG GIRL!!!

But the victory is short lived because to no one’s surprise, Lu Ting pulls out her guns (when did she get the second one?!) and shoots both girls. Night falls, four girls remain.

The following morning, Li YiTong emerges from the bathroom with wet hair. SHE TOOK A GODDAMN SHOWER?! Girl is doubly crazy, this ain’t a vacation!!! But I love that her makeup is still perfect.

Then we get a showdown between Yitong and Lu Ting. First of all I love how obvious Lu Ting was sticking her gun out to Yitong’s temple. And then how she lets Yitong turn with her hands up, and then orders Yitong to drop the gun. GIRLFRIEND, JUST SHOOT HER! THIS IS WHY YOU’RE DEAD NOW!

Well then comes the showdown of Yitong, Yue, and XinDuo. Yue sees a red target dot on XinDuo’s chest and shoves her out of the way, and they dodge Yitong for a while, but eventually XinDuo sees the laser target on Yue, and jumps in between Yue and Yitong.

That…actually made me want to cry.

Well, then we get the showdown on the beach between Yue and Yitong. I love how Yitong has been taking girls out from a distance this whole time and killed 8 people, but she can’t hit Yue from ten feet away. And then she had one shot left in her gun, hesitated to gloat, and in the end didn’t manage to shoot Yue. I find it poetic that in the end, Yitong was killed by the barrier, and it was because Yue witnessed the first death on the island.

BUT I HAVE QUESTIONS!!! First of all, the final showdown takes place on the beach where Yue landed, and in the end we see her running for the life boat, but you know what we don’t see? Liu ShuXian’s 3 days decayed body. I know, too violent/gross, but like…who removed her body? Did Jiang Shan eat it? Is someone collecting the girls bodies? I would have found it way more romantic/shippable if Yue dragged XinDuo’s body with her to the beach and upon winning, she takes XinDuo off the island with her. Now THAT’S an ending.

But we could have had an even more dramatic ending!! What if in the end, it was Yue and XinDuo? What if we saw Yue agonizing over killing herself or killing her friend? What if, plot twist!! XinDuo shoots Yue in the gut and as she dies Yue gasps “Why?” and XinDuo grins and says, “Did you actually think we were friends?” THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN SO DRAMATIC!!! But I guess since Yue is the center she has to win. Eh, maybe we could have had an ending where XinDuo shoots at Yue and misses and Yue then realizes she’s been betrayed and takes XinDuo out no hesitation, only to cry over her body and then shoot herself because THERE IS NO VICTORY!!!!

Also I have to wonder what Yitong’s background was in this MV. I took riflery one summer at camp and I have to say, I had taken archery before and I was used to aiming at targets, but that first day I did not hit the target once, I hit the ground every single time. So how on god’s green earth was Yitong making all those shots?! Yeah I know, it’s dramatic but STILL!!

And the artful trickles of blood coming out of everyone’s mouths. And the perfect makeup and hairless legs in the middle of a battle royale. And the frying pan.
