i can’t answer questions like this because, you know, as a romance novel, the relationships are kind of the point, you know? all i can say is i have a track record for writing a variety of types of relationships, particularly queer ones, so really anything could happen. 🤷‍♀️

I'm working on that SQQ meets NHS fic and I have completely fallen down the rabbit hole that is the history of Asian hand fans. We can actually assume just from Shen Qingqiu's usual style of fan that PIDW takes place in the fantasy equivalent of the Yuan or Ming dynasties, between 1300 AD and 1650 AD. Now I'm trying to figure out what criteria separates different genders of fans and having not much luck, haha.

Ohh that does sound like a fascinating Research Rabbithole! I hope you do find the information you need!

Do you think the Man in Glass might refer to Peter? With Glass being one of his aliases and this theme of his many layers, it seems like an awfully big coincidence

I think it absolutely does.

Not just the fact that he was Rex Glass, but the fact that he’s cracking. 

I remember my brother told me once that glass is really remarkable in how very strong it is– until it gets a single crack in it, and then every little bit of pressure will just make that crack grow and spread until it shatters into nothing. Juno inflicted that fatal first crack in Peter, and every tiny setback and miscalculation is hitting him harder and harder.

But I also think that it refers to something else. The Penumbra Podcast titles have a fantastic habit of referring to multiple things. I think we’ve heard mention of the other Man in Glass, but I’m not 100% sure who/what it is yet.

there’s nothing wrong with enjoying garbage media (it’d be the height of hypocrisy for me to claim otherwise) but trying to enforce the mental gymnastics you use to pretend it’s not garbage on others is inconsiderate and awful.

I love the way fear is affecting all the characters in different ways. There are the more straightforward cases like Tal and Damien and Angelo, but the way Quanyi and Caroline respond to it are so interesting because they almost seem like they're still in control until all of a sudden they really, really aren't

Sir Caroline’s reaction hits some nerves for me.  But at the same time, I understand where she’s coming from.

She’s in a position of authority that’s tenuous at best, after having been undermined at every opportunity by all of her superiors and peers, many of whom are currently champing at the bit to watch her fail. Damien was like that until a few episodes ago. I’m sure Sir Absolon is, though he’s offscreen. Queen Mira was micromanaging her and unintentionally communicating that Sir Caroline wasn’t actually capable of doing this job. Sir Caroline clearly feels that same kind of threat from Rilla and Quanyii. And now Angelo-- the closest she’s had to an ally at this point-- has seemingly turned against her. 

She’s freaking out, but she’s in a position where she can’t even the slightest amount of distress without apparently proving that she’s not fit for her position. 

So she does what a lot of people do when they’re in that position: she gets angry, she gets cruel, she lashes out violently against anyone who disagrees even slightly. And she insists on doubling down because admitting that she’s wrong feels like it would cost her everything.

I understand that feeling. I sympathize with it. But as someone who’s been on the receiving end of it too many times, it’s really uncomfortable to listen to. Even more so when she’s threatening to murder someone who’s done her no harm, who’s injured and is begging for her help, for the second time in only a handful of episodes. 

We see something similar in Damien, actually, where he doubles down on his faith and grows more rigid and reactionary as a response to his uncertainty. He couldn’t fight against that when he was in conflict-- it was only when he was alone and unthreatened in the safety of the garden that he was able to work through his emotions and figure things out.

Sir Angelo, interestingly, is taking what I call a “big dog” approach to fear. He’s not accustomed to being afraid of anything at all-- he’s powerful enough that monsters only pose a challenge rather than a true threat, his family is very loving and supportive, and he belongs to a privileged class within the Second Citadel. When he feels fear being pushed into his head, he interprets it as someone else’s fear, and he reacts accordingly-- with the instinct to protect, but also to tread carefully so he doesn’t do even more harm. I feel like Sir Angelo is actually at his best when he’s off-balance enough to force him to start paying more attention to his surroundings, because that’s when he’s most open to learning and growth. 

He can be extremely dangerous, but I think he’s at his worst when he’s overconfident and trying to be “helpful”, because that’s when he’s roaring along without paying attention to his surroundings and winds up thoughtlessly crushing people underfoot.

I still don’t have a strong bead on Quanyii, but she strikes me as someone driven by her whims. Everything is a game to her; at any point she can change sides or change shape or change her mind, and there’s little that anyone can do to stop her. So for her, fear doesn’t manifest as danger to her (she’d just run or destroy it) but as the threat of not getting what she wants. Her reaction to that threat is as mercurial as she is-- at first, she’s ready to get really nasty. And then literally seconds later she’s distracted and back to being a delight again.
