I understand what they were going for, but Solas doesn’t need all this posing. One major point why he was perceived as powerful in trespasser was the fact that he could do all this without announcing it with his body language. He turned people to stone without looking at them or moving a muscle.
So in a way I don’t like how flashy he is now as there is no point to it and he does not need to be as we know.
It’s that typical problem that you also see for example between Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit movies. They use more CGI because they can. Sometimes limitations are a blessing and I wish in some points they would have been more restricted. Like in general in DA4, everything is so cramped with stuff and the style tries to be bigger, brighter, more futuristic so that you can hardly recognise the roots of Dragon Age in this new game.
I‘m sad because DA4 in regards to the other DA games is what Baroque was to the Renaissance.
did I spend merely an hour just doing nothing during the fights just to take screenshots of Solas?
yes.

Good point. That could very well be. Throughout Thedas‘ history we have several side infos which assume that Mythal and Solas always fought beside each other to push back the old gods for ages.
Especially the behavior on the women‘s side prove that they could be possessed or actually be Mythal. In the lore books Mythal is described as a just and kind warrior and not like the other elven gods that crave power.
The way Tyrrda or Andraste behave is kinda similar. And on their side fighting is always an elf that first whispers to them in dreams and then encounter them in person. Always described as lovers. So Mythal and Solas could be more than friends and what we saw post Inquisition was actually Flemeth saying goodbye to „old friend“ Solas and not Mythal talking (maybe a purposeful distraction from developers? I always felt like Flemeth was quite headstrong and more in the lead? So maybe that’s why.) At Mythal altars there are also Fen‘Harel statues beside her. That‘s quite meaningful to me imo.
Also what intrigued me about Tyrdda‘s song was that the elf requested of her to get a child from a dwarven prince. The question is why. I feel like it connects with Flemeth story with her daughters. That Mythal always needed a lineage to „stay in a body“. So it could be that Tyrrda, Andraste and Flemeth are related to each other. I remember that in Thedas rumors exist that Andraste did have a children, all daughters and maybe they were from Shartan. And like in Andraste‘s Chantry cut song about the Maker/Shartan the Chantry might have erased info about her child too. Even if they were from Maferath, it is known that her daughters also only had daughters too. Vivial, her second daughter, made sure to destroy any record of her descendants. Again the pattern of only daughters born, like Flemeth.
Anyone else convinced that Solas took over an elven body a long time ago and that this person was Shartan? It’s been years and I am trying to get back into all the lore and tidbits and theories and what not. Currently reading the lore books again…
I have my suspicions that Andraste talking to the Maker was actually talking to Solas and he later in history managed to embody someone to fight together with Andraste against Tevinter to prevent Tevinter blood mages to pursue their endeavors of „opening the gates“ as the olds gods demanded of them.
Could even be that what the ideology started by Andraste’s ways/teachings was also a tactic made by Solas. Only that he didn’t predict what the Chantry could and later would ultimately become. „Dreamers“ were the first mages, tought by the old gods how to use it while dreaming. There’s a possibility that in some shape or form Solas only wanted a more careful use of magic and Thedosians being aware of the old gods and avoid them.
But in the end it all backfired with how the Chantry developed. Like a split Chantry between Tevinter and the rest of Thedas, with different ideologies, and Tevinter proceeding as usual. Or the way mages are treated and seen as a threat. Or over time the spread of false information on (for example) spirits and demons.
There were occasions where Solas was interested in how people perceive the Maker. Solas likes that it is someone that stays silent and acts in the background and not demonstrating power, which was worded in a way that one could predict he’s talking out of experience.
And let’s not forget that the main song/hymn of the Chantry is Andraste‘s „love letter“ to the Maker, where it is said that in this song Shartan was mentioned. That was cut out by the Chantry. I guess they didn’t like Andraste calling the Maker a magic wielding elf.

Have a little thing I drew for young Solas* and my OC girl Felani to help me cope with the angst in the recent chapters of “The Rebel’s Ascension”. I love writing their romance so much, I have no words for it!
Special thanks to @johaeryslavellan, @noire-pandora and @fiadhaisteach who always leave comments on every chapter, plus some extra special thanks to @elfrootaddict who encouraged me write when I was still stuck in the first draft. I would have stopped writing a long time ago if it weren’t for you lovely people!
Your support means the world to me! ♥︎
*I will probably hold onto my headcanon that Solas used to have both hair and vallaslin before he became Fen‘Harel until the day I die.

What if Aili was an evanuris? Who would she replace, and how, and what would she do?
Thank you for sending me an ask ;_;
To be perfectly honest, I can’t really see Mythal grooming Aili to be an evanuris unless she had no other choice. She doesn‘t really fit the ideal of Fen‘Harel, and if she was going to get rid of one of her own kids to make way for someone else, it would probably be Falon‘Din, and Aili doesn‘t really suit that role either. ^_^;
Not to mention that the idea of holding that sort of power would honestly freak her out a bit. Aili had quite a few High Stress moments just being the Inquisitor and fretting about the sheer number of people one bad decision could effect, so if a job of that magnitude just got dumped on her out of nowhere, there would likely be a few hundred years of constant internal screaming on her part.
That being said, there has been some potential plotline stuff thrown around in the Sylaise’s Daughter AU in which Aili and General Lavellan decide that Falon’Din and Andruil just need to piss of and die already, which in turn makes Dirthamen sort of down for the count, and Ghilan’nain sort of flips her shit and needs to be taken out, too. And then the General would take Andruil’s role, Dorian steps in for Falon‘Din, and Aili would take over for Ghilan’nain. And then all of them focus their attentions on ways to preserve the good things about the empire while slowly chipping away at the bad.
Aili keeps up with sort of genetic engineering, but it is mostly aimed at agriculture and how to extend the life and health of farming animals. Not so much monsters. Definitely no more trapping spirits against their will. She also sort of splits Dirthamen’s gig with Dorian, and she devotes a significant amount of energy to ensuring that if the empire DOES collapse again, their knowledge will not be so easily lost. Libraries are made more accessible, and lower ranking people are given more liberties to pursue intellectual interests if they want to.
She already has a sort of weird reputation in that AU of being a bit of a tinkerer and a collector of odd people (and potentially scandalous lovers), but the people who actually serve under her directly tend to be very loyal to her. By the time she took over as the New Ghilan’nain, she‘d likely have a fair few of her mother‘s followers who were already serving her, who would want to continue to work for her, if they were able. She is much more lenient about aesthetics and trends than Sylaise, and since Ghilan’nain didn‘t have a ton of followers to begin with, she’d probably have people who want to sign up to serve under her just hoping for a shot at getting permission to have a kid. (and they would be right. Aili would be passing out as many permits as she thought she could get away with, so long as the people asking seem like they would make half way decent parents. She, understandably, has a soft spot for people who want a baby)

I have nothing to add, your honor. Please give me that story. Thanks!
Solas: “Cole is a spirit. The death of the real Cole wounded him, perverted him from his purpose. To regain that part of himself, he must forgive.” Varric: “You don’t just forgive someone killing you.” Solas: “You don’t. A spirit can.”
You know, this little exchange from Cole’s personal quest made me think. We like to speculate that the corruption of Wisdom in Solas’ personal quest is drawing a direct parallel to Solas’ own past and what might have happened to himself, a spirit of wisdom being denied its original purpose, turning into Pride. And Cole’s comments in Trespasser always suggested to me that the cause of this could lie somewhere in Mythal giving him a body against his will and making him fight in wars he didn’t want to participate in.
But looking at this dialogue again, although in Cole’s case, it was specifically the horrific circumstances under which the real Cole had to die that corrupted his compassion, maybe it really was Mythal’s death that, like Solas says about the real Cole’s death, “wounded him and perverted him from his purpose”. It makes me wonder at what point in time that line “He left a scar when he burned her off his face”, removing his own vallaslin and therefore free himself from Mythal’s will, took place and whether it happened before or after she was murdered.
We’ve talked about the importance of Solas’ “true name” that the Qunari seeked out in Tevinter Nights and how remembering his first name, hence his original purpose could potentially be the key to his redemption and “to regain that part of himself”. Seeing as Cole needs to forgive to regain his compassion, I mean, Solas clearly never forgave the Evanuris for what they did. If anything, he would need to forgive himself for his mistakes, when all he tried to do was to save his people. But I don’t think it’s about forgiveness in his case. The first thing that comes to my mind thinking about Solas’ deeply rooted pile of issues that perfectly matches his pride, is his inability to trust.
It might sound cheesy to some, but what if bringing Solas to learn how to trust again will help him remember his first name and find his original purpose?

Sliding into the discussion real quick :)
Since Solas is all about free will, I don’t think that he would force a vallaslin removal on anyone. As for the ancient elves without the vallaslin that are mentioned in the story... While reading, I remembered a line Solas says to Abelas at the Well of Sorrows: “Your people yet linger”. Considering the fact that neither of them see the Dalish or the city elves as their people, I always thought that there are some ancient elves around that have been awake all the time that Solas has been sleeping. I‘m also remembering something about uthenera and that the sleepers would need to be tended to by others until they master the art of sustaining themselves with energy from the Fade. So it’s possible that some of Solas‘s old followers were around and watched over him, waiting for Fen‘Harel to wake up again.
As far as we know, some elves like Felassan kept their vallaslin, but there might have been some who got rid of it and stayed around for millennia.
Not sure if this is one of these instances where fanon and canon have begun to blend in my head. After all, Solas never clarified who his agents were in Trespasser. They just allowed Corypheus to locate his orb. But I always assumed that former agents from his rebellion were still active. So I just filled in the blanks for this story with lore tidbits like these. Not sure if that’s what actually happened though. BW do love their vague storytelling.
I finally, FINALLY finished Tevinter Nights! I waitd to read The Dread Wolf Take You until the end like a good little raisin, and now I want to discuss so much. But the thing that my brain keeps thinking about is that one part in the Assassin's story where he mentioned possible(?) ancient elves? Sentinels? And they didn't have vallaslin. Does anyone have thoughts on that? Do you think, if Abelas and his Sentinels joined Fen'Harel, that they all had their vallaslin removed? Maybe only some of them wanted it removed? Would Solas have allowed his agents to keep the symbol of their slavery? I know he doesn't judge a Lavellan who decides to keep hers, but would the same grace extend to those who represent him throughout Thedas? I'd love to hear someone else's opinion on this, because right now I'm going around in circles.
