Part of the reason I find myself shipping Hoshi/T’Pol is because I think that seeing them interact more and have moments of closeness would bring a lot of richness and complexity to both characters. In different ways, they’re both very lonely and isolated and never feel like they belong, but they both pretend they’re doing just fine. And if they could just be forced to recognize parts of themselves in each other, they could have a super interesting and meaningful relationship. It wouldn’t necessarily have to be romantic, but, I mean, I saw that scene in Sleeping Dogs, so.

Anyway, I realize my motivation for shipping them is very close to my motivation for shipping B’Elanna/Seven (both characters are way more similar than they’d admit and forcing them to confront that would be so interesting). Except that with B7 at least they have a good number of fun scenes together in canon, and even if their onscreen relationship never truly evolves past their initial antagonism, there is a lot of genuine complexity that can be read into some of their interactions. Whereas Enterprise has given me approximately three even slightly substantive Hoshi/T’Pol scenes so far.

Lately I've seen a lot of complaining in the dungeon meshi tag about how now there is a lot more m/m works on ao3 than f/f but like farcille is still the most written pairing and by a lot :

And the reason why m/m is more popular is because there are more possible pairings like labru, kabumisu, chilshi, laishuro and others, while f/f ships with the main characters the only available options are farcille and marcille/izutsumi. And Kabru being the most shipped character with the male characters it's kinda cool because it is still rare to see characters with dark skin being shipped with the main character in anime fandoms (I literally can't think of any another example of a character with dark skin being part of the most popular slash ship in a anime fandom).

I recognize that a lot of people needlessly hate on straight ships bcuz they think the woman gets in the way of their favorite mlm pairing but like. Have we ever considered I want the woman to kiss other women MORE than I want the two men to kiss each other. Could not care less abt them actually

Xena is literally a show that became visual fanfiction.

2 fanfiction writers (probably more) were approached by Tapert and Co and were told to write episodes for the show. And those scripts were produced and made into canon real episodes for the actual aired show.

Melissa Good got ‘Coming Home’ and ‘Legacy’ and would have also gotten ‘Last Chance’ written with Tapert too if it made it to production before the network chimed in to censor it by telling them to scrap it and leaving us ending up with ‘Many Happy Returns’ which was Liz Friedman and Vanessa Place.

Katherine Fugate got ‘When Fates Collide’ which I’m sure no Xenite on Earth could tell you they hated.

God knows what that unproduced script for the original cut of the episode ‘Fins, Femmes & Gems’ looked like where they fully outed and canonized Xena and Gabrielle as lovers by way of an obsession spell.

All I know is it was written by Tapert and 2 other writers and it was X&G FEMSLASH fanfiction.

The man was insanely supportive of canon X&G and if it wasn’t for his hang up with X&A, he would have told the studio to screw themselves and gave the shippers everything they wanted because he was also a shipper. I’m serious… go read that Sappho musical script. It’s insane. Xena wears a dog collar with a leash.

That stuff is far too out there for me personally but they went there. They fully intended on going there.

If it wasn’t for censorship… we would have had it all.

Whether we wanted it or asked for it or not, he’d do it because he was a crazy man who didn’t give a shit.

Sapphic Media Roundup

My last reblog reminded me: I've been trying to watch more wlw ship media recently, perhaps in part hoping that I'll latch onto an ongoing fandom instead of joining after the show ends (like with Supergirl 😂). So far on the list that I've tried...

Arcane - Absolutely loved the show, and definitely loved caitvi as a ship. It didn't leave the holes in my heart that drive me to continue the story, though, so I doubt I'll write here (other than continuing the smut scene).

Agatha All Along - Absolutely fantastic show. And a delicious ship (though the ship isn't quite central in my head). I wrote a few ficlets, but otherwise feel satisfied with it. Looking forward to whatever happens next with these characters.

Hawkeye - Just finished watching this and loved it! I absolutely adore both Kate and Yelena as characters. Though I don't think I ship them.

Wicked - Was a HUGE fan of the musical growing up, though I didn't see the characters as gay ("they're straight, just like I am!"). Haven't seen the movie yet, but given that I already know the musical and the book, I don't think this'll spark anything.

Hazbin Hotel - Chaggie, my beloved 🥺 I have a ficlet/small one shot idea that might eventually make its way out. But I don't think I'll write a ton of fics here. I am VERY MUCH looking forward to the next season though!

House of the Dragon - Okay, guys, you can tar and feather me. I think the show's plots are really cool, and Rhaenyra and Alicent are both interesting and infuriating characters at various points (same with the others), but I don't actually ship them. I feel I have betrayed my people, I'm sorry 😭. In any case, I finished S1, but don't plan to continue with S2. It's just too dark a show for me (both in topic, and because they still haven't learned how to light a night scene since GoT).

Wednesday - Absolutely fucking adored this show, and eagerly awaiting season 2. Couldn't get into wenclair as a ship, though - nor either canon ship in the dumb love triangle - because Wednesday strikes me as very aroace. (Watched a while ago.)

She-Ra - Fantastic show and ship. This was a lot like Xena, in that it was so close to perfectly crafted that I don't want to touch it, despite loving it a ton. (Also watched a while ago.)

Warrior Nun - Decent show and decent ship. I don't have it in me to write a season 3, and there aren't holes in earlier seasons that I want to explore. (Also watched a while ago.)

Legend of Korra - Absolutely loved the show and Korra herself. I liked the romance with Asami, though she was much less of a main character than I thought from how people spoke of her, so I think I found myself a little disappointed with canon there.

Rizzles - Watching this show is actually what got me really reading fanfic (around May 2021). I bet I would've written for this ship had I thought about writing earlier, but I wouldn't think about writing until the next year. Love them.

Maybe trying at some point:

Grey's Anatomy/Station 19 - I actually used to watch both until the pandemic, which was right around when marina got started. I love both characters individually and could totally see them together, so maybe I should catch up 😂

ALOTO - I watched an episode or two and couldn't get into it. But this happens a lot with me, so I may give it another try.

OUAT - I've actually seen this in the entirety before. But I'm curious if I'll see any chemistry around Emma and Regina if I rewatch it (I didn't the first time). This ship feels like the closest cousin to supercorp, in terms of seeing it on tumblr, so I might want to give it a conscious shot.

My take is that I don't think femslash shippers are especially bad about reducing characters into shallow tropes compared to slash or het fandoms

But this isn't to say femslash fans are good at characterizing, this just means most femslash slash and het shippers reduce their ships into flat easy buzzwords instead of exploring what actually makes them interesting in canon because they are all plebs with shit taste
