Felicette,

Your name is itself beautiful and in another world - another life time, let us not tell anyone, because the world tends to destroy all things that are well and good.

I wonder what it must have been to die on foreign soil, not the ones which reached into the ether, but which orbited past breaths and crushed the world back into your tiny lungs.

But to die in a place of which you sought comfort, ripped from the womb and introduced into a life of colour that could only be photographed in black and white.

I wonder, if when they sent you up you cried, not from the pressure to the eyes and tear ducts, but cried in a way that even the stars would mourn losing - stars of which observed and clashed and fell. Your eyes the collapsor.

I hope that when you stared up into the darknesses grasp you drunk in the mirror pales full of moonlit milk until your belly was warm.

I am sorry, that this was the only way to feel the touch of another. It must have been scary and isolating, to be all alone up there and down. But I want you to know that you succeeded. While Laika continued to play fetch with the orbs of earth - you succeeded.

And I am so sorry. That when all was said and done and your bones shuddered with the recollection of gravity and weight which should have been the touch of a hand that it was taken from you.

I hope your belly was warm and your thoughts were filled with the sky and the attention of a mother you deserved. I hope that you were fed treats and admired but I know you were not, and it must have been so scary when the unfamiliarity of cold entered your veins and the slow doming darkness had you succumbing. I hope that when your eyes shut and you didn’t know what was happening that you could think not of the gloved hand that did not touch you, but the moon and planets who would welcome you into their hold in arms that you had not been held in.

I would like you to know that you did nothing wrong. You were a good cat and it was never your fault.

I would take you whole as you are and in another lifetime do nothing but press sunlight kisses to your fur and hold you in my dire arms.

Away from cruelty and the scalpel - away from them.

You were a good cat, I don’t know why you died.

You didn’t deserve to die.

I always hear everyone talking about Laika the dog who got sent to space . I hear a lot less people talk about Felicette the cat who was sent to space .So Felicette this is for you . There is multiple reasons for this one Laika was a dog and Felicette was and cat and two Felicette survived her original orbit and Laika didn’t. But what many don’t mention is how when Felicette came back down to earth she was euthanised so the scientists could see how space changes the brain ( they found nothing ) . And I think Felicette fate was equally bad if not much worse than Laika ‘s . Hear me out … Laika was alone and Laika knew she was alone she would have never known how everything happened to her , she wouldn’t have known who was responsible but Felicette , Felicette would have been so scared in space and then she would have seen her people ( the scientists whom she had probably been around for quite some time at this point ) and she would have felt safe , had HOPE, then they’d have come towards her “ maybe to be petted or cuddled or comforted “ but no to betray sweet Felicette one last time . my Roman Empire

Felicette, a former stray cat who was sent into space by French researchers in 1963, now has a bronze statue in her honor at France's International Space University in Strasbourg, France. The statue was designed by sculptor Gill Parker, depicting the cat perched atop Planet Earth.

Felicette was the only cat to have ever survived a sojourn into space, being part of a 15-minute suborbital mission.

The memorial is the culmination of a Kickstarter campaign launched in 2017 by cosmic cat enthusiast Matthew Serge Guy. More than 1,100 patrons donated $57,000 to honor Felicette.

Felicette, a petite tuxedo cat, wasn't the first animal to be launched into space, just the first cat. However, before Felicette, France had so far only sent rats into space. She won out over 14 cats being trained for space flight.

Felicette - then designated C341 - was launched from a base in the Sahara Desert, reaching an altitude of about 100 miles above earth, while scientists kept close tabs on the cat, monitoring her breathing and heart rate through a series of electrodes implanted throughout her body. The capsule she was in then parachuted safely back to the ground. A few months upon her return, she was euthanized so that the scientific team could examine her brain. She was commemorated on postage stamps around the world in the 90s.

Félicette is the only cat to have been successfully launched into space. The French space program launched her on October 28, 1963. She survived her trip but was euthanized 2 months later so her brain could be studied.
