“Long day?” Kuroo asks, holding you close as you start to settle back home. The familiarity is swirling around you, yet you’ve never felt so out of place. You can’t even grace his question with an answer.
The world was muddled, gray. All of the colors around you felt muted and wilted away without the joy the sun brings.
It wasn’t often you felt like this, but in light of recent events, it’s become your new normal. A blanket of barbed wire wrapped around your shoulders, never letting you rest or relax completely.
You could see the look on his face, the worry etching along his beautiful features twisting the knife in your stomach, nausea rising up your throat. The buildup of bile threatened to spill out and you were choking back the words you desperately wished to say.
Life had a nasty habit of floating out of your grasp, the good things slipping through your fingers and leaving you holding nothing but vacant space, wondering what happened.
It wasn’t that your life had lack of love or enjoyment, but today all of it felt miles away as you’re faced with your reflection — everything bad staring back at you that makes you want to shrivel up and hide away, covering the mirror up in hopes it was all an illusion.
Insecurity and self-doubt chip away at you, taunting you as false memories try to validate all your worst demons, all boiling down to one simple thing.
The absence of hope.
The loss of light that causes darkness to flood in, sticky and invasive, a parasite that latches onto your flesh and bones, tormenting your mind with its lies that only selfishly feed into its lifespan.
Breaking out of it can be a terrible thing. It can hurt like hell — feel like it too as you rip apart something that’s glommed onto your skin and drains you of all the goodness you still desperately tried to hold onto.
But his touch helps bring you back. The gentle brush of his fingers along your cheek refocuses all of your thoughts — attention landing right back onto him.
“That bad, huh?” Kuroo gives a small smile, one that plants a seed of hope back into your body. The little joy he carries on his face as he looks at you warms and nurtures it, the feeling beginning to bloom and blossom into a rebirth. “Aw, come here, sweetheart.”
The hug he gives you grounds you, pushing all the spiraling pieces of your mind back together, his love consuming you as his arms wrap around your body.
“Just been a little rough lately.” You mumble, cheek resting against his chest, the sound of his steady heartbeat a calming beacon of hope. After the agony of sailing alone in the dark for so long, your lighthouse stands tall, looking for you at every mile.
“I know.” He kisses the top of your head, giving you an extra squeeze. “But I've got you.”
“You don’t have to.” Self-sabotage floods your veins, your hands already trying to push against him, your body pulling away as you’d do anything to keep him from barring the weight you carried on your shoulders.
Kuroo lets you get some space, but you still feel his light touch you. The soft expression he had, the way his fingers twitched with need, already itching to have you back in his arms.
“I want to.” Not an ounce of hesitation wavered in his voice and you blink back a tear, desperately trying to hold your ground.
You wanted to give in so, so badly. But the thought of having anyone feel an ounce of what you felt scared the shit out of you. A last-ditch effort to protect them from you and all the hurt you held.
“I don't want to burden you.” The confession is but a whisper, secretly hoping that he didn’t hear you. But he does, he always takes it in and understands you even when your voice shakes.
“You couldn’t burden me even if you tried.” The fondness in his promise almost scared you, your walls screaming to be put back up. But you knew it was a lost cause, he was nothing if not persistent.
“But-“
“And even if you could,” he pauses, smoothing his palms over your cheeks and down your shoulders, pressing a lingering kiss on your forehead, speaking his next words against your skull as if your brain would be forced to take them in. “Then please, please burden me.”
“What—“ He cuts you off before you can try to doubt his plea.
“I’ve chosen, committed to loving you. All of you, no matter what. We’re a team, remember? So, burden me.” The fiery intensity in his amber eyes shows you there’s not an ounce of doubt, no hesitation to what he just admitted. It tugs at your heart in all the right ways.
His forehead leans against yours, gazing down at you with all the love and care in the world that it makes you feel silly for ever doubting it. The lingering feelings remain, something deep down inside of you that wants to come out.
“Tetsu, I don't even know where to start.” your voice is still small, vulnerability creeping up on you, pressing down on your back as you fall deeper into his embrace.
“Then why don’t we get a little more comfortable?” Kuroo asks, innocently enough. “Pouring out your heart out in the front foyer doesn’t seem ideal now does it?”
“No.” You shake your head, a hint of a smile lining your lips. The slight twitch fills Kuroo's heart with hope. He gently takes your hand, leading you further into your shared apartment.
He’s quiet for a moment and you wonder if he’s feeling the weight you carry on your shoulders through the mere act of holding hands. Before you can slip through his fingers, he holds on tighter, tugging you forward so he can wrap his arm around your shoulder instead.
“What do you say, beautiful? Take a bath, order some takeout, and maybe tell me what’s going on in that pretty little head of yours?” His other hand reaches up, gently booping you on your forehead, followed by the tip of your nose.
“Yeah.” The light begins to seep back into your soul the more you melt into his side, tucked away from the ugly thoughts that were invading your space these past few days.
To say you were lucky was an understatement. To have someone who’s willing to sit with you for as long as it takes until you muster up the courage to speak about your troubles is more than you could ever ask for.
The patience and care that exudes from the man beside you is almost infectious. Love pours from every word and every action he commits, flooding the walls of your heart until you have no choice but to open the doors and let him fully consume you. It only makes it easier knowing that he’s held the key all along.
“Get in there.” Kuroo smirks, jerking his head to the drawn bath, a waft of lavender filling your nose – the kind he knew you always loved. It crinkles your nose just right, scrunching it up in a blissful state that catches the sparkle of Kuroo’s bright eyes. Everything looked beautiful and your heart has never felt so warm, so cherished.
One of your favorite things about this apartment was the bathroom, as silly as it sounds. The high rise you lived in left big windows in every room, this one being no exception. The city lights shone beyond, letting you gaze out into the world when it didn’t have the opportunity to look back.
It’s amazing how one moment you can feel so down in the depths of despair but looking out at the window from this height serves as a reminder of how far up from the bottom you are. The progress you’ve made doesn’t become exempt the moment things start getting tough again, it’s merely another test that aims to show you how far you’ve truly come.
As you crawl into the warm water of the tub, letting the bubbles soak away your worries and sing you melodies of relaxation, Kuroo goes the extra mile. Because of course he does. There were a few candles you kept in the linen closet for nights when you two wanted to have a romantic bath. He lights them anyway, adding to the cozy ambience, and your heart soars at the thoughtful gesture.
“Are you planning on joining me?” You ask, eyes on him, watching him scurry around the small space to make things perfect. His head whips around to you, gaze softening once again before something mischievous swims his golden irises.
“I thought you’d never ask.” Kuroo quickly takes off his clothes, not giving you nearly enough time to admire his toned body before he slipped in behind you, sturdy arms holding you flush against him. “There, now we’re all nice and cozy.”
“Thank you, Tetsu.” You sigh a breath of relief that had been trapped somewhere deep within, locked away with a key that had been thought to be lost. Leaning back against his shoulder, you realize how much you needed this — him.
His syrupy sweet lips brush against your head like the sun kissing the horizon as it rises once again. It fills you with warmth, support, gratitude. Everything wonderful in this world birthed from a simple kiss that held all the love you needed.
“You can always lean on me, I won’t ever let you fall.” Kuroo’s voice is softer than usual, a tone reserved for you and these tender moments when you need a little extra gentleness. The tender, reassuring words cradle around your ear and hold your heart steady as his arms loop around you, securing you in place. “I promise.”
You know your thanks will fall on deaf ears, that this simple task he’s doing for you is no sweat off his back. The only thing he craves to hear from you is your acceptance, your willingness to let him in so you can tackle everything together like the power couple you were meant to be.
“Okay.” You whisper out into the soft-lit room, letting the atmosphere of love and bubbles consume you, melting away your troubles like the wax that drips from the candles. “I will.”
“That’s my girl.” Without even seeing his face, you know he’s smiling. A proud grin he notoriously wears like his finest suit whenever he finally achieves his goals. The one he knew he’d sport in only a matter of time after he broke down your stubborn walls once again.
Tender hands rub along your arms, his lips brushing along your head as he hums to the tune that never fails to make you smile right back. The song you would often sing to each other in the sweet moments in your life whether it be slow dancing in the kitchen as dinner cooks, or moments like these where you’re tucked away from the rest of the world to be reminded just how much your souls are tied together.

Supergirl and Andrea are trapped by Leviathan and thrown into a cell together. They’re doing something to suppress Acrata’s powers and Supergirl blew out hers while fighting Leviathan. So they’re not going anywhere anytime soon. What could they possibly find to talk about as a way to pass the time?
The cell was clean, for that she could be grateful, but it was still a depressing grey color and dimly lit. There was nothing in it, not even a chair or a cot. From what Kara could tell, the walls were made of various alien metal alloys. The door must be 10 inches thick, not that it mattered. She’d solar flared after facing Rhama Khan and his minion knocked her unconscious. When she woke, she was still powerless and lying in this cell with none other than her boss and Lena’s friend, Andrea Rojas. The first hour passed in silence, probably mostly due to fear on Andrea’s part. But as the wait continued, boredom set in, and for Andrea, boredom seemed to be easier to focus on than fear.
“Since we’re stuck in here, we might as well find a way to pass the time before our untimely deaths,” she said, brushing some unseen dirt from her skirt.
They were sitting directly opposite each other on the floor, their backs to the uncomfortably cool metal wall.
“We’re not going to die,” Kara reassured in her most confident and level Supergirl voice. “I have friends that will help us. I promise, I will get you out of here safely.”
“Do you make a lot of promises you can’t keep?”
“What?”
“Just trying to figure something out...” she trailed off, tilting her head at her with just a little too much scrutiny. Kara shifted uncomfortably and turned away, looking down. “Okay, I have to ask...what on Earth did you do to Lena Luthor?”
Kara snapped back up. “Excuse me?” Her voice had gone up a few octaves.
She shrugged, tilting her head back against the wall. “I have never seen her show such concentrated rage before and we’ve known each other since we were teenagers.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Lena logged a lot of hours using Obsidian lenses,” she explained. “As in hundreds. Naturally, I was curious what she’d be using them for at such length. Knowing her, I guessed something to do with her experiments, running trials using VR would certainly speed up the process and take out years of work from the beginning stages. Wow, was I wrong. Every single simulation she ran was for sole purpose of hurting you.”
Kara frowned, swallowing hard.
“I mean, Lena’s incredibly creative, I always knew that, but the number of ways in which she assaulted you with such spectacular violence just blew my mind. It’s the kind of thing I’ve only seen from exes on our platform. Ex-husbands get the most horrific ones and almost always deservedly so. I have to know, Supergirl...what could you have possibly done to this Luthor, infamous for her use of icy revenge, to turn her into such a fiery ball of rage?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Kara replied dully and got to her feet, arms crossed tightly.
“I’m talking about Lena spending hours upon hours violently beating the crap out of you in a myriad of different ways.”
Kara started pacing. Her jaw clenched.
“There was one where you flew her to some beautiful cliffside to show her the sunset and she kicked you in the chest so hard that you bounced off the mountain the whole way down, leaving a Supergirl shaped crater at the bottom. Another where you saved a family from a house fire, but as soon as they walked away, Lena doused you in gasoline and used a wrecking ball to knock you back into the burning building. The flames were wildly cool. But that’s how good our technology is, of course. Looks and feels like the real thing.”
“Enough!” She stopped and turned on her with a glare, nostrils flaring, made more obvious by how hard she was breathing.
But Andrea was unfazed. “Oh come on! My favorite, and seemingly a favorite of Lena’s as well with how often she ran it, is when you stop a school bus from hitting an adorable group of children. Lena drops some absolutely scathing remarks from what I can tell by your kicked puppy expression, and then she punches you in the face so hard that the force of it sends you flying backwards into the school bus, blowing it up!” She laughed. “God, that was fantastic. I was so disappointed we didn’t manage to recover the audio for any of them. Naturally, Lena customized everything and, despite her efforts to try to keep the footage private, she didn’t know about a little backdoor that we specifically coded into the software for emergency reasons so...lucky me, it’s all on our servers.”
“She...she did that?” Kara asked weakly, deflating. “For hours?”
Andrea nodded with another laugh. “Oh, it’s crazy. I’d be happy to show you them if we do get out of here alive.”
“No, thank you.”
“Suit yourself. But it was interesting to see how someone could get under Lena’s skin like this. Even at her most vulnerable with me, she never turned into...that. Lena shuts down, walls herself off, no emotions, no hurt, that sort of thing. With you...dear God! How did you manage to devastate her like that and yet she can’t even bring herself to hurt you in a virtual reality simulation?”
Kara’s face contorted in bewilderment. “What are you talking about? You just described a bunch of horrible ways that she...fake-killed me.”
“Well, it would have killed any human, of course. But you’re Supergirl. You’d shrug off any of those things. Everyone knows there’s only one thing on Earth that can kill a Super. Lena built each and every one of those simulations herself. She could have easily given herself a gun with Kryptonite bullets, empty the chamber into you, and watch you writhe in agony before you eventually died a horrible death. Or she could have used a sword with a Kryptonite blade and carved you up into tiny bloody pieces. Or—“
“I get it!” Kara cried, holding her hand out. “I get the point! Just stop.” She looked sick to her stomach as she leaned against the wall, head hung low.
Andrea raised an eyebrow. “I don’t think you do. Look, any first year psych major could see through it. Lena had every imaginable way available to make you suffer a long, torturous death a thousand times over in the simulations, but she never did. I don’t know why she bothered with VR when she could have achieved the same thing by putting a picture of your face on a punching bag. In the simulations, you’re always Supergirl. You’re always invulnerable. No matter how terrifically violent it was, no matter how much she seemed to want to hurt you, she couldn’t even manage it in a fantasy world. So tell me...who are you to her, Supergirl? You’re not exactly what I’d call her type, but she’s never been altogether predictable...”
“You’ve got it all wrong. That’s-that’s not—“
“Oh I’m right about this and you know it. You did something absolutely devastating to her, likely betrayed her somehow, and shattered her heart. Was it an affair? Ooooh, was it Kara Danvers? That would be deliciously terrible. Lena is clearly infatuated with that woman. Frankly, I don’t even know why she’d bother with you when she’s pining for Kara.”
“You need to stop. Lena is supposed to be your friend, show her some respect.”
“Am I hurting your feelings, Girl of Steel? You don’t sound very surprised by the mention of the best friend. If you didn’t have an affair with Kara then what did you do to send poor little Lena off into the deep end?”
She glanced at her before turning away. The silence stretched on so long that Andrea was about to give up on it altogether.
“I did betray her,” Kara admitted, barely above a whisper. “I regret it so much.”
Andrea hummed and nodded. “Been there.”
“She’s never going to forgive me, is she?”
“I don’t know what you did, but in my experience, likely not.”
Kara slid to the floor again. A picture of defeat.
“She was in love with you,” Andrea said, gazing at her curiously. “Did you at least know that much?”
“It wasn’t like—“
She scoffed, cutting Kara off. “Either you’re lying to me or you’re lying to us both.”
She blew out a breath and rubbed her forehead. “What makes you so sure?”
“Because I fell in love with her when we were 15. I know all the signs. We had quite a few stops and starts, but it never really fell into place. She loved me, but it wasn’t anything close to what I felt for her. I was always gutted by that, but even then, I still ended up being the one who broke her heart. Poor Lena. She just can’t win, can she? Everyone who loves her is doomed to betray her somehow. She probably thinks she’s cursed. The one person in the world who should never have to feel pain...and it’s all she gets.”
“You sound like you still love her.”
“I do. Always will. But take it from me, Supergirl, there’s no way back. Not with Lena.”
“I just...I can’t let myself believe that. There has to be a way.”
“Then you’ll die trying and she won’t thank you for it.”
Kara eyed her for a long moment.
“What did you do to betray her?”
Andrea gave her a rueful smirk.
“I’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours.”
Kara was silent.
“Thought so.” She got to her feet and stretched. “Think your friends are going to break us out anytime soon or do I have time for a nap? Don’t want to die or be rescued with bags under my eyes.”

Ferrum Chapter 2
Here’s chapter two, and my apologies for how closely part of it follows Episode 1 of SAO.  After this the story probably won’t follow much of the shown canon at all, though I will probably bring in SAO characters for the boys to interact with eventually.  But in SAO everyone has the same starting point.  But with the world being as complex as it is, I doubt I’ll ever really need to follow episode events or dialogue this closely again.  Though I might get the boys involved in the Level 1 boss battle, we’ll see.
Also, please excuse any incorrect computer/programming/gaming jargon.  I’m doing the best I can. T_T
------------------
Peter was a masochist.  That was really the only explanation for his current situation.  The person had even offered to go their own way before Peter had opened his big mouth and tied them together for the next few hours.
Peter knew it wasn’t really Mr. Stark, he did.  But the avatar looked exactly like the Tony Stark that Peter remembered— before the space starvation and the new stress lines of living in a post-apocalyptic earth.  And he sounded just like him.  He had the same weird humor that fluctuated wildly between arrogance and self-deprecation.  He got Peter’s stupid science jokes and the laugh he gave when Peter growled out “FINISH HIM” during a fight with a boar was painfully familiar.  Several times he had to stop himself from calling out the wrong name, and each time left him feeling like he was repeatedly prodding a gaping chasm of a wound.
“You ok, Ki— uh, sorry… Tor?”
And then there was that.  All in all, it was a perfect recipe for emotional disaster.
“Yeah, sorry… my mind wandered off a bit there.”
“In the middle of a pvp and monster spawn zone might not be the best place for that you know.  How does this game even handle respawns?” asked Ferrum, striking down another boar with a swift horizontal strike.  It taken a bit of trial and error for them to get the hang of activating the sword skills, but once it had clicked they had made quick work of the low level spawns in the area.
“You know, for someone who managed to snag a limited release of this game you know surprisingly little about it,” responded Peter.
“Yes, I known, I’m an enigma.  Humor me and explain please.”
“We’re supposed to respawn in the nearest town I think.  Given the bugs we’ve seen so far though I’m not sure I’d want to test that at the moment.  Might be one way to initiate a logout though?” said Peter.
“I’d rather not risk it, and I’d suggest you do the same until we hear from an actual GM,” said Ferrum, sheathing his sword.  “That being said, we’ve been out here several hours now, wanna head back into town and see if anyone has heard anything?”
“Sure,” said Peter, also putting away his weapon.  They stood in the middle of a clearing with expansive views.  Most of the beasts in this area hadn’t been ones to initiate conflict, and they would have plenty of forewarning if anything headed in their direction.  So for a moment Peter allowed himself to just relax and take a proper look around the area, marveling at the beauty and complexity of the world Argus had built.  Off in the distance he could see hills disappear into the haze of the the horizon and cities raised atop impossible pillars.  In a field not too far from them there were a couple other players likewise looking out, taking in the beauty of the glistening waterfalls and towns painted in oranges and reds as sunset came over Aincrad.
“I have to give them credit.  When I first heard about their plans for this game I was a bit dubious on whether they would actually be able to deliver on the promise.  Concept art looks great, but actually being able to code a full sensory experience into an application?  And create an entire open world with that data?  I mean, I had thought about the concept before, but the technology needed to do it always made me a bit uneasy…  It would be way to easy for someone to use it in ways it shouldn’t be,” said Ferrum.
“What changed your mind then? I mean, since you’re here now?” asked Peter.
“…I don’t know,” muttered Ferrum, sounding distinctly unsettled with the admission.
Peter opened his mouth with a joke on the tip of his tongue, something to lighten the suddenly uneasy mood—
When the deep toll of a bell rang out from the Town of Beginnings, rolling through the air with the tone of a death knell.
“Huh, wonder if they’re finally about to make an announcement?” said Peter.  “I’m surprised it took so—”
Suddenly a white light enveloped him.  In those seconds he felt nothing, completely stripped of sensory.  Just as he felt himself starting to panic, the light released him and was gone as quickly as it had came.  He found himself and Ferrum once again standing in the center of the plaza of the Town of Beginnings.  All around them seemingly every one of the 10,000 players were similarly being teleported into the square.
“What the hell?” said Ferrum.
“I don’t know.  Pretty sure they should be able to make announcements across the whole game regardless of player location.  Maybe its an opening event?  Would explain the theatrics of it,” said Peter.
The whole square was a buzz with nervous confusion as people tried to figure out what was going on, then Peter heard someone call out above the crowd, “Up there!”
Peter looked up, and above the square there flashed a single red polygon with the word WARNING.
The sky turned red as more and more polygons spawned proclaiming ‘WARNING’ and ‘SYSTEM ANNOUNCEMENT.’
Peter wanted to think that maybe they had found the bug.  Maybe they were announcing a fix or instructions for the players…
But even without his spidey sense, something felt wrong.
Then the sky began to bleed.
“What is that?” asked a player to the side in horrified awe as the blood-like liquid began to coalesce into a more solid state.  Within moments it formed into a hooded figure wearing familiar blood red robes with gold trim.
A Game Master— likely an a real one this time.
The crowd of players all began to mutter speculations about the figure or the possibility of an event.
“I have bad feeling about all this.”
Peter jumped.  He had forgotten about Ferrum at his side.  He looked over at the older looking man, taking in the tight lines around his mouth, his eyes darting around the area taking everything in, but not straying too long way from the god-like figure of the GM in front of them.
Peter wished he could reassure the man like he had earlier in the day, but Peter was suddenly very aware that in this world he was no different than anyone else.  Just as vulnerable, just as powerless… What had originally been a main draw for him was now a very real weakness.
“It would be way to easy for someone to use it in ways it shouldn’t be…”
They were absolutely at the mercy of this monolithic system…
“Attention Players… Welcome to my world.  My name is Kayaba Akihiko.  As of this moment, I am the sole person who can control this world.”
And whoever controlled it.
“Son of a bitch,” muttered Ferrum, a look of horror on his face.
“I’m sure you’ve already noticed that the logout button is missing from the main menu,” Kayaba continued.  “But this is not a defect in the game.”
A shiver traveled up Peter’s spine.  A stone of cold fear formed in his stomach.  Surely not… surely someone along the way would have noticed something so horrendous in the code…
“I repeat— this is not a defect in the game.  It is a feature of Sword Art Online.”
“But how… how can he keep us here?  Surely someone on the outside can still get us out?” asked Peter.
“It’s the hardware, Kid.  He’s fucked with the user client hardware that everyone’s brains are wired into,” growled Ferrum.
“You cannot log out of SAO yourselves.  And no one on the outside can shut down or remove the NerveGear.  Should this be attempted, the transmitter inside the NerveGear will emit a powerful microwave, destroying your brain and thus ending your life,” said Kayaba.
Immediately Peter ran through all the specs on the hardware he was privy to during his time as Tony’s intern, and came to the same conclusion Ferrum already had— this mad man was not lying.  He had disabled the safety mechanism that would keep certain powerful data bursts from frying someone’s brain.
Data bursts such as an autosave or a death respawn.
“Unfortunately, several players’ friends and families have ignored this warning, and have attempted to remove the NerveGear.  As a result, two hundred and thirteen players are gone forever, from both Aincrad and the real world.”
“Two hundred and thirteen…”
Peter turned around to see Ferrum looking on with eyes wide, his right hand grasping his left wrist as his left hand gave small spasms.
That motion was intimately familiar.  The similarity  was uncanny…
“As you can see, news organizations across the world are reporting all of this, including the deaths.” Multiple program windows opened, most featuring various news channels running live, corroborating what Kayaba was explaining.    “Thus, you can assume that the danger of a NerveGear being removed is now minimal.  I hope you will relax and attempt to clear the game.
But I want you to remember this clearly.  There is no longer any method to revive someone within the game.  If your HP drops to zero, your avatar will be forever lost.  And simultaneously, the NerveGear will destroy your brain.”
So he was right— it was both the autosave and respawn functions that had been weaponized in the headset.  The more he thought about it, the more angry he became.  The man had taken glorious innovations in technology—some of it pioneered by Mr. Stark himself—and twisted it into a personal hell for all these people, some of them undoubtedly children.  As if the world hadn’t been dealing with enough tragedy over the last few years.  He wanted nothing more than to punch Kayaba directly in the face with every pound of his spider strength.
But he couldn’t do that.  In this world, he was just like everyone else.
With great power comes great responsibility… but without that power, was that responsibility still his?
“There is only one means of escape.  To complete the game,” Kayaba said, bringing up a digital layout of the floors of Aincrad.  “You are presently on the lowest floor of Aincrad, Floor 1.  If you make your way through the dungeon and defeat the Floor Boss, you may advance to the next level.  Defeat the final boss on Floor 100, and you will clear the game.”
The crowd, which up till now had been mostly muted in shock, finally began to shout and rumble in confusion and denial.  And from the sound of things, this monologue was just about to wrap up.  When it did, all hell was going to break loose.
He had some choices to make, and fast.
“Finally, I’ve added a present from me to your item storage.  Please see for yourselves.”
Shit.  What now?
Peter swiped down to access his storage, feeling distinctly as if he were walking into a trap.  Out of the corner of his eye he could see Ferrum doing so as well.
An item labeled ‘Mirror’ had been placed in his inventory.
“I’m guessing this mirror is the ‘gift,’ though now I’m wondering if he programmed the auto-drop or did it himself, and if he’s aware of my… status,” whispered Ferrum.
That’s right.  Ferrum was a GM, however that had happened.
“Do you think you could—”
But he didn’t get to finish his question, as at that moment everyone in the plaza began to shout as they were all consumed once again by white light.
When it receded, everyone had changed.
Some looked younger, most looked older.  Quite a few people around him looked to have changed genders completely.  Peter glanced back down at the mirror in his to see his Thor-like appearance gone completely, and instead his true face reflected back at him.
So that was the purpose of the all too thorough calibration he and Ned had gone through.
“Kid,” said a shocked voice at his side.
Peter turned around towards Ferrum, wondering who had been behind the meticulous avatar of Mr. Stark…
Only to see that Ferrum was completely unchanged.  Perhaps being a GM had made him impervious to the magic of the mirror?
“Underoos… what are you doing here, kid?!”
With those heartbroken words, Peter’s carefully constructed walls came crashing down.
. . . . .
Peter couldn’t think.  He certainly couldn’t speak.
He could vaguely tell that Kayaba had continued with his closing speech, but he couldn’t tell you what he had said.
All he could process was Mr. Stark’s face in front of him, and the name that only he had ever uttered to him.
It was impossible.  He had seen the body—the horrific scorching where the universal energies had burned through him, the life support system shutting off, the brightness leaving behind a cold husk in a metal suit—
Peter’s whole body flinched when he felt that familiar hand rest on his shoulder.
“Kid!  Are you with me?  We need to get out of here.”
In the time Peter had spaced out Kayaba had disappeared, and now the whole crowd was devolving into a panic.  People were screaming in terror and rage, several had broken down into sobbing messes on the ground.
He wanted to do something— anything to make this better.  Tell people that it was ok, they would figure this out.
But more than that, he wanted someone else to tell him that as well.
Finally he brought himself to focus on what Mr. Stark was saying.
“What do you mean we have to go— where else is there to go?” asked Peter.  “We can’t leave the game, we’ve tried—”
“Not the game, we need to get out of town.”
“What— why—”
“We can talk more later, follow me,” Mr. Stark said before running down a nearby alley.
After a few minutes they stopped, and Mr. Stark started flicking through his user interface.
“This is a fantasy RPG… you can’t tell me there are no helmets…”
After scrolling for a while, he tapped an item on the list and spawned a basic metal helmet and quickly placed it on is head, before continuing to run out of town.
“Mr. Stark!  Wait!” cried Peter.
“Don’t shout that kid, otherwise the helmet is pointless!” Mr. Stark called back.
“Ferrum… why are we heading out of town?  Its about to be dark and the only safe zone we know is here!” shouted Peter.
“The people back there are panicking, Peter.  It won’t be much longer before they start turning on each other, looking for someone to take it out on.  Between my face and the fact that some saw me in GM robes earlier I don’t want to chance hanging around for someone to put the pieces together.  Not to mention this area’s resources are going to be swamped before we know it.  Resource management is built in to the Cardinal system to maintain balance and encourage player movement and activity.  There won’t be enough to go around.”
“But if we die on the road the resources we need won’t really matter!” yelled Peter, pulling to a stop.  “There’s only so much they can do to us in town, it’s a No PVP area.  Lets just find an inn on the outskirts of town and spend the night.  We need a better plan than just running out of the safe zone at twilight.”
Mr. Stark had pulled to a stop when Peter had, obviously unwilling to leave him behind.  He looked down the alley, obviously wanting to continue on, but after a moment his shoulders dropped in an obvious show of concession.
“Fine, lets go to the outer ring and find a place,” said Mr. Stark.
As he turned and started walking away, Peter allowed himself a moment to take in the familiar gait, the way Mr. Stark always walked with his back straight and his head held high, as if he were always prepared to walk onto a red carpet, even in his most destroyed workshop clothes.
He could recognize every familiar mannerism from their hours pouring over suit tech and web formulas.  In retrospect, perhaps that as much as his face was why he had latched onto the man to begin with.
But the billion dollar question still remained… how?
Hopefully once they found a room to bunk in, he could work out what the hell was going on… preferably before he had a complete emotional breakdown.

Hey, Felix! - A Review of The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat - Guardian Idiot
youtube
Viewing the series as a whole, we could say that Twisted Tales is a mixed bag: not only in the sense of “the ratio of good to bad episodes is like a 50/50″, but, since it suffered from too many cooks in the kitchen during its production, we can see episodes taking entirely different directions.
The current plan is to review the three first episodes of the series: these were the very first ones I’ve watched and the ones that made me fall in love with the series, and we’re going to attempt to pinpoint exactly why. At first, I wanted to approach all three at once, but I think it will be better if I tackle them one by one. Still, I’ll keep this video that has all three because it’s got the best quality I could find.
GUARDIAN IDIOT
- 1:09-2:17 - We start not with Felix himself, but with the villain of this episode! And a pretty memorable one to boot! You just can’t go wrong with the morbidity of the meat industry, especially in a setting where animals are sapient.
Highlights of the Butcher’s presentation are:
(1:09-1:17) introduces us to the main subject and the place the villain operates in: a fast food restaurant where people are chowing down burgers in a rather gross and even brutal manner (pay close attention to the background lady)
One of my personal highlights of the Butcher’s presentation is the dialogue with the lady who asked for salad (1:17-1:31). I’m not an expert on comedic timing, but I like how he politely follows her request with “And what kind would you like?”, to prompt her to say “What kind do you have?”, only to deliver that brief, explosive “NONE!”.
Tumblr media
Look at his face. He was trying to lead the conversation to that point all along. Whoever was acting his voice was having a blast.
(1:31-2:02) L I S T E N T O M E N O W
Ok we get to the Butcher’s proper musical number, which give us a taste (HAH) of what to expect from Twisted Tales:
Things appearing where they don’t belong (like the beefed-up steer (HAAH) inside the banana)
Objects coming to life (I know, it’s weird to classify meat as an “object”)
And a tinge of the disturbing (animals being turned into pies/sausages yet still singing, a roast pork being fed to a family of pigs)
- 2:02-2:17 Somehow, the Butcher has run out of supplies. I like how the guy spends 5 good seconds pondering until he reaches the conclusion he has to get more meat. The cricket providing the sounds to signal an “empty” room is a nice touch, and so is the Butcher noticing it, picking it up and just chucking it aside like “naah that won’t do”
- 2:18- 2:28 And here he is, the star of the show! I love Felix as a street artist here, and how everyone runs away when he removes the top of his head as a hat to ask for tips. Yes, it could be interpreted as nobody wanting to pony up some pennies for the poor cat, but I really prefer the “body horror” route better (we’ll see a more extreme case of this in a later episode). This, coupled with Felix’s main issue (”Man, am I hungry”), portrays him as someone who tends to get the shorter stick in life, which makes him especially sympathetic to the audience and especially vulnerable to the villain.
- 2:28-3:04 These next scenes are brief, and the purpose of that is to take us to the kicker of the episode: Felix meets Butcher, Butcher lures Felix inside his restaurant/slaughterhouse with the promise of free food.
Seems that the Butcher is making things up as he continues with his plan, at least as I see it when he says “I’ve... got something for you!”. Observe how he looks up, thinking, and then, when he comes up with the rest of the sentence, his face stretches up in a smile and rolls his eyes, denoting his weirdo mannerism. It’s the small details like these what makes this character so fun to watch. And Felix’s enthusiastic “Oh boy!” while the Butcher prepares a cleaver behind his back!
We get some more old school cartoon weirdness with the Butcher sniffing Felix with his elongated eyes, what I assume is a string of meat-related puns (I’m sorry, my hearing is not that good) and some more subtle silliness, such as the Butcher giving Felix the menu in the shape of a playing card.
I really like the Butcher’s joyous glee he takes in murdering innocent animals. You know, the kind of stuff you could really enjoy in fiction. Or maybe it’s just me and my love for cackling, over-the-top maniacs.
-3:04-3:29 So this is the situation: our MC is about to be slaughtered alive by a sentient meat grinder (which by the way it’s a pretty good reflection of our villain’s cruelty). It’s interesting to put Felix in such a helpless situation right at the start of the series, but it’s pretty much done for the purpose to give way to the real meat (HAAAH) of this episode. Felix’s scream for help takes over the whole screen and reaches heaven...
- 3:29-3:46 ...and a guardian angel apprentice is tasked to help him. I’d like to point out the queue of taller, more muscular, arguably more handsome angels: they are there to contrast with and underline the goofiness of the one Felix gets assigned to (complete with buttwings and straight up falling from heaven hollering). It’s nice to also get a motivation for him (”If I do good, I can get rid of these... training wings”)
Tumblr media
We’re mostly focusing on scenes and how they work in these reviews, but I’d like to point out the background for heaven. I like sunset-like gradients that much.
- 3:47-4:16 The eponymous Guardian Idiot presents himself to Felix (not before getting a reminder of the trouble the cat is facing) and tells him he can take him anywhere he wants. This is where you realize the whole Butcher plot’s purpose is to take Felix to wacky places and have mini-adventures in them. Here is also where we can see better that Felix’s guardian angel might be... somewhat incompetent, with his ”Uh-oh, I’m thinking, but I’m not hearing anything!!” bit and him checking on a tourist guide, taking his sweet time while Felix inches closer to the meat grinder. But he finally does his magic and...
- 4:16-5:21 The reveal of Felix being underwater is done like the following: First, Felix takes some time to chill on a hammock and lazily gaze at a fish swimming above him... then he realizes something’s fishy (HAAAAH) and then it zooms out to reveal that he’s on a sunken ship! And he’s not alone: there’s a crew of skeleton pirates who also want to make mincemeat (HAAAAAH) out of him! Look at that wild take Felix does (4:31), that’s another tinge of the disturbing I like so much.
We also get the first instance of Felix using his tail as a tool or a weapon, in this case a sabre to fend himself off the pirates. We get some more lovely cartoon shenanigans as Felix finishes his confrontation with the skelepirates (like the bone unicycle and the gossipy ship figures), but it abruptly ends when Felix gets trapped inside a clam and asks for help again. This, in turn, makes his guardian angel appear again. Felix is not happy at all with his wish and asks him to put him “on dry land”
- 5:21-6:35 “...It sure is dry”. The water joke falls a bit flat to me, and I don’t quite get what’s going on with the snowing log cabin (is it a reference? or just for the sake of randomness?).
And because you can’t be a Toon and not be in the desert without seeing some mirages, here we have Felix suffering from double vision and dancing cacti. I really like the gag of his pupils multiplying because he’s seeing double, as well as the “deserty” version of the can-can.
(5:58-6:19) Is our boy Felix learning from a certain someone or what
Again, Felix gets in another life threatening situation and happens to stumble across his angel again, who is building a sandcastle in the desert. I really like it when Toons engage into casual activities in life-threatening environments. Felix requests to be put somewhere else (not before getting a shot of the vultures chasing him) and...
- 6:35-6:58 We get a short string of sequences of Felix being put in increasingly ludicrous scenarios (seriously, what’s going on with the cult and the clown chase). Fed up, Felix asks the angel to put him back where he was, even if he’s supposed to save him. Reluctantly, the eponymous Guardian Idiot does so, and comes to watch Felix’s fate
- 6:58-7:35 Back to the slaughter house, the guardian angel mourns Felix beforehand, feeling bad that his incompetence did not help him at all. We get a shot of Felix on the edge of death and then the Butcher enters the scene, eager to get some fresh meat for the restaurant. I really like how he notices the “fairy” weeping and straight up goes like “GRANT ME A WISH”. He’s so unfazed, like screw it, awe is for weenies. And yes, the angel is so heartbroken he’s willing to serve the bad guy, but then...
Well, it goes as well as you expect with a wish such as “make me that fattest, greasiest sausage in the world””. Was it incompetence or that the Angel finally realized this is his chance to save Felix? You decide.
- 7:35-7:55 So we get a happy ending with Felix congratulating his guardian angel (”What do you know? You’ve saved me, after all!”) and we even get to see him getting his new wings (airplane wings because of course we gotta crank up the silliness whenever possible). And just in case the villain being turned into a sausage wasn’t disturbing enough for you, as the iris closes out on Felix, he pulls out a burger that might or might not be made out of the Butcher...
And that’s it for now! I’m glad I started this review because it made me notice things I haven’t noticed about my favourite series before, what makes it what it is, and what makes me love it so much. I think the two next episodes follow the same formula, so we’ll check on them sometime. Stay tooned!

Fallen Outcast
2- Haru
“Daddy!!”
Haru jerked into a sitting position, the cries of his daughter suddenly disturbing his slumber. The sunlight streamed through the small gap in the tent's slightly-open zipper.
“Daddy!!”
Haru was suddenly more alert. His daughter's cries sounded desperate. He got to his feet and exited the tent, his eyes jumping from one are to another.
“Daddy!!”
“Freja?” Haru called out. “What’s wrong?”
“I can't find Mommy!”
Haru's heart skipped a beat. “No,” he thought. “She's just worried. She'll be back soon.”
“Are you sure she didn’t just go for a walk?” Haru asked the panicked Raccoon-child, assuming she’s just exaggerating from worry.
“She’s been gone for hours!” Freja cried, running up to her concerned father.
Haru’s heart sank with fear. “Are you sure it’s been hours?” he asked, trying to hide his fear.
Freja nodded glumly. “Grim, Ying and I were playing tag. We were playing for ages, before we stopped and went to hide in Mom’s tent. We waited for ages, and we were reeeaall hungry, so we went to find her. We couldn’t find her in any of the camps, nobody has seen her. We looked several times. She’s gone..”
Haru swallowed, now conscious of revealing his emotions to his daughter. “Go get everyone. I mean everyone. All of them, from each camp, and nobody must be absent!” he ordered. Freja nodded and obediently dashed off, her words echoing around each camp as she yelled.
Haru sighed. “What has she done,” Haru thought, “to get lost or get kid-”
He swallowed. He didn't want to consider that one. “No, Omega has not been kidnapped,” he thought, trying to reassure himself. He scanned the camp. There was no sign of her. His fear began to flutter in his stomach as he watched the others walking or running towards the fire. Haru sat down on one of the logs and put his face in his hands, trying to think up a solution.
There was a buzz of quiet voices, all confused and curious. After a minute or so, Haru gathered himself and got to his feet. He took a deep breath.
“Hello, everyone. Thanks for coming here so suddenly, but we have an important issue. Omega has gone missing-”
“What?!” Luna cried.
“-And knowing the forest, anything could be possible. We need to find her. Now, Trap, could you-” Haru trailed off, his eyes darting between faces in the crowd of people.
“Trap?”
There was no sign of the half-dragon. Haru started to feel the panic grow inside him.
“N-Never worry!” he said, quickly trying to think of a substitute.
“Gold, you and Isa,” he began, before noticing the absence of her too.
“Sorry, you and Sparrow,” he corrected, playing it off as a ‘mistake’. “You will fly through the forest. Gold, you can change into a dragon, am I correct?”
Gold nodded and she transformed from a furry to a dragon in an instant.
“Good,” Haru responded. “Would you be okay with Sparrow riding on your back?”
“If it is useful to get her back, then heck yeah,” Gold said, giving him a determined look. Haru smiled.
“Okay, then. Furry and Evan-”
“Oh no,” he thought.
Haru cleared his throat. “Excuse me, Luna, Ras, Campbell and Star, you four will look for her on ground. Tauren, I think it's best if you go too. If you have any problems, make a clear signal with your fire; like a flare or something.”
The group responded with a nod or some other form of approval. Tauren looked anxious.
"Are.. Are you sure?" he asked nervously.
"What's wrong?" Haru asked.
"Er.. Nothing.. Nothing.."
Haru would've questioned further if he wasn't so worried about getting Omega back.
“ Foxlina, Maddie and Winter; you three will stay here and make sure the children are okay. We can't afford any harm to come to them. Okay?”
Maddie and Winter nodded.
“Got it,” Foxlina replied, nodding and forming her group.
“Vitreous, Blitt, you two keep watch around the outskirts of camp. Winter can fetch us if she returns.”
Blitt nodded and Vitreous saluted, a determined look in his eyes. “Yes, sir!”
“Gold, I'll tag along with you and Sparrow, if you don't mind,” Haru said, completing his rescue plan. Gold grunted, staring at him. There was a tense silence.
“Er, is that-”
“Fine,” Gold interrupted.
“Well, then. Everyone, go! If nothing arises, be back at sunset, not too late!”
There was a murmur from the crowd as it dispersed into smaller groups. The five on land galloped off almost instantly, Tauren awkwardly hiding at the back. Vitreous and Blitt strode off, leaving Gold, Sparrow and Haru to hang back.
“Keep a close eye on them,” Haru told Maddie, Winter and Foxlina. “Don’t let them too far out of your sight. Also, would you mind finding them something to eat?”
Maddie nodded. “Leave that to me.”
Haru smiled, exchanging a nod with them before turning to his scouting group. Sparrow climbed onto Gold's back. Haru took a deep breath and followed her lead. Gold stretched out her wings before bringing them sharply down and lifting both her and the other two from the ground.
In the blink of an eye, the three were racing through the air. The wind wildly threw their hair and fur in whatever direction it felt like. The wind screeched in their ears. Their eyes were focused on the ground beneath the leaves for any sign of blue or purple.
Haru had overlooked the fact that it would be chilly in the air, but he was willing to bear it for the safety of one of the more vulnerable members of his camp. There were few conversations taken place, the only ones being important leads and suspicions. Anything useful would be crucial to them. Any thoughts, any ideas, any suspicions would assist them in the mission
As well as watching the ground, they were also keeping watch for any kind of signal to indicate anything from Omega's location being discovered to danger, separation, and anything else in between. There was no room for fail. There was no room for error.
Gold jerked out of the way of a flock of birds heading straight towards them. Sparrow's paws lost their grip of Gold's scales and fell. Haru swiftly grabbed her paw, his panicked instinct leading him.
“Don’t take this the wrong way,” he hissed to Gold, before locking tails with her. Gold yelped and protested. Haru ignored her and proceeded to pull Sparrow back onto Gold's back. Sparrow was in a state of complete shock as she struggled onto her original perch on the dragon. Haru slipped his tail out of Gold's and back to being curled around him.
“Th-Thanks,” Sparrow stuttered, still recovering from the fall.
“No problem,” he replied, smiling. “Gold, next time, warn us.”
“Well I'm sorry, do you want feathers and beaks in your face?” she snapped.
“Guys, don't,” Sparrow interrupted. “Omega’s still missing, this isn't helpful. If anything, it's a distraction.”
Haru sighed, his mind racing between thoughts.
“Where is she..?”
