Heyyyyy idk if you’ve made a post like this before (feel free to link to it if that’s the case) but I’ve been wanting to get into Leonard Cohen and u seem like the closest thing to an expert that I know on the subject so I figured I would ask you where the best place to start is. Got playlist or album recs? Thanks 😊
hiiiiii i would not necessarily call myself the most thoroughly knowledgeable expert as far as his entire body of work because there is just so much BUT you came to the right person as far as having lots of knowledge of and love for his music! thrilled to send you off on your leonard journey with some pointers. i think i've answered asks like this before quite a while ago that i have no way of tracking down so here's my usual spiel:
this playlist i made a while ago has a decent spread of 1-3 songs from different albums throughout his career (in chronological order or at least i did my best) and should give you a bit of a feel for the sound of different eras of his music. i would honestly just follow whichever songs really catch you and explore those albums further.
as far as albums:
my personal favorite is new skin for the old ceremony, it holds onto his sort of early folk acoustic sound but starts incorporating various percussion instruments and such so it branches out a little. lyrically it's the album of his that has resonated for me the most. i don't think i would necessarily say that you should start there but i do need to mention my favorite first.
i'm your man is some of his absolute best work (ain't no cure for love + i'm your man are some of his greatest songs ever imo) so that's another highlight. more of an 80s synth kind of sound. great stuff in there.
songs of leonard cohen is a wonderful debut and is a great place to start. lovely beautiful acoustic album.
you want it darker is his last album and i would very honestly call it his masterpiece. i think getting familiar with more of his work first might make it a more interesting listening experience but again he has so much phenomenal music and it's not like there's a wrong way to listen to it.
various positions is of course also wonderful and might also be another good place to start off, kind of his transitional point between folk-acoustic and a more i'm your man type of sound. it has hallelujah on it so i don't need to say much else to sell this one.
hope this helps!! do come back and tell me about your experiences if you listen to any of this at all.

⠀☆ — Warren DeMartini ׅ⎖
⠀Ratt's soft spoken guitaristist has arrived! Will ⠀he shred at 3am? Will he feed all of the stray ⠀cats? Will he occupy the corner? Who knows!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Don't like? Don't interact.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀... more info below
Before you follow / interact
I am new to rp on tumblr so please be patient with me while I figure everything out, but I am not new to rock star rp! I've written an array of rock stars on twitter that I plan to move here!
I prefer not to write with minors!! Just a personal comfort thing as I'm nineteen turning twenty soon! 16+ is okay just be warned! (If I accidentally follow you and you're 15 or below please block, asks are fine though!)
My writing is usually literate, so changing layout forms is gonna be awkward for me, but I'm learning!
Nsfw and such is fine, I don't mind it! (Anything descriptive is for dms only! and please be respectful, I won't hesitate to block.)
I also write the darker topics that come with rock stars and the 80s, which is another reason I don't write with most minors! If anything might be triggering, feel free to block!!
Much of my portrayal is both fact and fiction, so don't think of everything I write as true! I am not affiliated with Warren DeMartini.
My asks are open so feel free to either interact ic or ask questions about me ooc! (Please label anything ooc if so that way I won't get confused. Just don't be creepy!!)
My activity may be on and off, so don't expect me to be active all of the time!
Single-ship seems to be the standard on tumblr, but I prefer multi-ship. If you don't like that it's fine just don't judge me about it. (A main ship will be reserved with proper chemistry.)
My private messages are open too, so if that's preferred we can write in there or just chat!
Ooc is labeled with // !!
I go by Swine, my pronouns are he/him. I'm available on discord for roleplay too! I don't automatically respond ic as it's my personal discord, so don't send ic starters and such.
Main blog is @breaking-thechains
Side blog is @whitesnakez & @bigcityroadie
Personal blog is @quiet-riot-breathless
⠀⠀⠀Now onto Warren!
Set during the release of the album Invasion Of Your Privacy (1985).
Warren learned his signature guitar tone from George Lynch of Dokken! He sees George much like a mentor.
Known to be soft spoken, and a bit of an introvert. Although he still likes to party!
Hates whenever Blotz or Stephen try to rope him into arguments.
Out of the band, Warren is closest to Robbin and occasionally Stephen.
Used to live with Jake E. Lee of Ozzy Osborne and Badlands! Now he rooms with Robbin, Stephen, and Juan.
Can be a bit homesick at times when on tour. It's worse when he especially misses his family.
Prefers to stick with regular beer and cigarettes. Not much of a hardcore rockstar!
Unlabeled! Not really closeted or open about it either. What happens in the back of the bus, stays in the back of the bus!
Physical touch is both his platonic and romantic form of love language!
⠀⠀That's all for now folks!

Hi, I'm Lyric! they/it/any pronouns, adult; music enthusiast and self-described "weirdo multimedia artist". This is my tMG sideblog!
Please feel free to add on to posts in body text rather than just in the tags - part of what's so great about tumblr is that it's an interactive communal microblogging site. Asks and reblog conversations are something that have largely fallen out of modern tumblr culture, but the conversationality is one of the best things about this platform and I promise I'll always be delighted to talk back and forth if you send me asks or add on to my posts.
I'm also part of a tMG discord server that's largely folks from here and the subreddit! It's a really fun chill environment to chat and nerd out about the music with some really great people in the community.
Some of my tags that you can check out: #resources (about the live music archive, keeping a local music library, and more similar posts to come), #live tapes tuesday (weekly posts spotlighting tapes from the live music archive collection), and #the patch zone (linocut patches that I make and give out at concerts)!
I generally tag by post/media type and relevant album, as well as whether any images are described. Queue runs twice daily and I try to keep it running constantly. All original posts are described both in alt text and post body text, and if I describe your post please feel free to edit the ID into the original post to make it more accessible! thanks <3

Music Meme 2: Electric Boogaloo
@papermint-airplane and @simsdastra tagged me again for this, so apparently they, at least, want more from me. There's no accounting for taste, folks! ;)
🎶✨when u get this u have to put 5 songs u actually listen to, and publish. then, send this ask/tag 10 of your favorite followers (non-negotiable, positivity is cool) ✨🎶
I'll use YouTube embeds this time, just because it's easier than copypasting links and because ya girl doesn't have a Spotify account. (Well, technically, I do, but I forgot my login and idc enough to recover it.) Anyway, since embeds are huge plus I babbled as usual, I'll put them behind a cut.
And I guess I'll tag more peeps, so here you go: @twinsimming, @rollo-rolls, @ninjaofthepurplethings, @suratan-zir, @fluttereyes-ts3-blog, @danjaley, @unsimspirational, @lilidebergerac, @stargazer-sims, and @parystrange. And if anyone reading this wants to do it, too, consider yourself tagged, too. Feel free to ignore, as always. No pressure.
Here we go…
youtube
This one reminds me of my rave days. Man, I miss those rave days… I listen to a lot of ambient, trance-y electronic stuff whether I'm high/tripping or not. It tends to fuel creativity in me, and Delerium is always at the top of my list. I love the combination of dark ambient and ethereal female voices that most of their tracks have.
youtube
More belly dance music. Yes, I am really into belly dance. I've been taking lessons for….eight?…years now, and I'm good enough now to perform as well as teach beginners. In fact, I'm teaching my very first actual beginner's class this spring, and I'm very excited because 8 people (including one guy and one kid, which is awesome) have already signed up. SQUEE! :D I love everything about belly dance. It's excellent exercise and gives you amazing muscle control, which is great for inherently clumsy people like me. I love the music. I LOVE love that it makes me feel sexy and ultra-feminine and that there's no pressure for dancers to be super-skinny. (In fact, belly dance looks better if you aren't skinny, although lamentably I am skinny because of health issues.) But most of all, I love the outfits. The fabrics, the sweeping skirts, the colors, the BLING. ✨ ✨ ✨
ANYWAY! This piece is one that I have performed to. I prefer pieces that are all/mostly darbuka (That's the drum), and this guy is a master.
youtube
You wouldn't think that this combo would work as a duet, but it really, really does, despite the fact that, according to my first husband (who was a recording engineer and eventually a producer), Donna was hung-over as fuck during the (single!) recording session. Can you imagine singing like that while hung-over? I can't.
Ironically, I played the shit out of this song when my first husband left me. LOL I still play it a lot nowadays when I want to sing and dance like an idiot.
youtube
I wouldn't call myself a metalhead by any stretch of the imagination, but I do like metal quite a bit. My favorite metal genre is symphonic metal, which probably isn't surprising since I'm a classical musician. :) But yeah, give me all the Nightwish and Epica and, indeed, Within Temptation. This is arguably my favorite song of theirs.
youtube
And since I haven't put anything from my favorite band of all time on these lists…time to fix that. :) Though it definitely isn't my overall favorite song of Queen's, this is my favorite song from Queen II, which is my favorite Queen album. It's the height of their fantasy-theme phase. It's also their "heaviest" album, so I thought that something from it was a good song to follow Within Temptation. :)

Hellooooo we're doing this again
I need music recommendations, though we're doing things a touch differently this time around!
Recommend EPs and Full albums only! No entire artists and no individual songs! (If I decide to go listen to more on my own time that's on me lol)
I'm going to tell you how I feel about the album after I listen to it—even if I didn't like it. Don't rec something if a potential negative opinion of it will ruin your day.
Preferred music genres: rock, metal, alternative, folk, outlaw country, anything experimental/weird. (This list is just a guide, feel free to give me something not on the list or really out there :] )
Not these genres: pop or electronic, unless there's also something weird about it.
Anyone who sends me something I already know will get a baseball thrown at them /joke (read: the more obscure the music, the better!)
Please send recommendations in the form of an ask so I can keep track of them!
In return, I'll recommend you an album that I think you'll like :D
#idea gets recced music#idea original post#also I'm definitely not going to get to everything in one day so don't expect me to lmao

Hey, I'm that keysmashing frothing at the mouth commenter from ao3... I just wanted to tell you again how amazing your works are. And I wanna give you a follow to see some more Winterbaron brainrot hopefully.
AAAAAAAAA! I legit squealed seeing your ask in my inbox! Hello! I adore you already, you've been absolutely fantastic!
Thank you so much for coming to visit my blog! It's really about nothing at all, and every little passing whim that goes through my head in queue, lol.
You'll also always find my latest work pinned at the top of my page, like the one I posted just past midnight last night. I usually post around midnight to 4 am, then schedule it to reblog at 3, 6, 9, noon, then 3, 6, 9, midnight that day. #Hi, and #I'm the problem it's me, are my personal and writing tags, because Taylor Swift's album Midnights was just right for what I've been posting.
Winterbaron and pictures of Frank Grillo are my current brainrot, and I've been considering submitting myself to the mortifying ordeal of being known by actually posting some of my own random thoughts on topics, but mostly my brainrot is limited to tags currently, when I remember to add them.
(I'm shy in general so it's hard for me to say all the unhinged things I think, even online.)
@zsparz, and @six-demon-bag are two fun and friendly folks that I can remember off the top of my head who share the brainrot, and @emptymidnight does amazing art!
As for HTP flavors and folks who have Frank Grillo/Rumlow on the mind, may I introduce you to @ex0rin, who is absolutely the reason I got my own ao3, @5ummit, who has amazing metas and gifs, and @the-ravening who is very kind!
Always feel free to send me asks or message me privately. I've been wanting someone to talk about my stories with, and I'm more willing to do that here, because I won't be spoiling anything for folks who don't want spoilers like I would be in the comments of the fics themselves.
AAAAAAAAA! I'm so excited you're here!!
#hi#i'm the problem it's me#im gonna shut up now#before i talk in circles and this becomes something i have to put under a readmore#winterbones#winterbaron#tumblr mutuals and friends#my asks

hi! what would u say are starter metal bands/albums/songs for people who have never listened to metal? i'm interested in exploring new genres but i know NOTHING about metal and you seem to know quite a lot!
See I love trying to answer this question but it's honestly a little tricky! The thing that makes metal so great imo is the fact that there's a billion subgenres. But that's also what makes it hard to find the right recommendation for someone off the top of your head! I might send you a metalcore song that does nothing for you, but if I had gone with like. Stoner metal or something you'd have found your niche.
That said I recently made a playlist for a friend asking me the same question. I tried to throw in an array of different styles. Check it out if you have Spotify! Feel free to skip when a song isn't working - there might be something you like more further on
Aside from that, click below for a couple of recommendations for stuff I find to be more accessible/appealing to a broad audience
Sleep Token - here's an alt metal band that's really blowing up right now! They're about to release their third LP. I'd suggest checking out a few of the singles they've already put out for it. This band has been great for attracting new folks to metal: they play with a lot of different genres and while they certainly have heavy moments, I feel like their pop-friendly approach makes them a good band to on board people to the genre.
Invent Animate - this is a metalcore band that also just put out an early contender for Album of the Year imo. There's a mix of harsh and clean vocals, a very atmospheric sound throughout, and a good mix of technically impressive instrumentation and strong hooks. If you like this sound I'd suggest checking out other bands like Spiritbox and Bad Omens.
Lacuna Coil - hey, do you like Evanescence? Do you like beautiful women with incredible singing voices? This band might be for you. I'd recommend their 2002 record Comalies to start, or you can check out their most recent album as well. If you like this sound, you might be interested in checking out bands like Epica or Ad Infinitum next!
Iron Maiden/Judas Priest - interested in a more classic sound? Maiden and Priest were two titans of an era called NWOBHM (the New Wave of British Heavy Metal) - characterized by fast, aggressive music and clean vocals that tend to be on the higher end. I'd highly recommend Number of the Beast for Maiden or Screaming for Vengeance if you want to get into Priest. If you're looking for contemporary bands playing with a similar sound, I'd suggest Sumerlands or Sonja, who both had excellent records last year.
Nu Metal/Alt Metal - sometimes it can be tricky to talk about these genres because people get very passionate and nitpicky about the terms. But generally speaking if you like the sounds that dominated the metal/hard rock charts around the turn of the century you might like the following bands: Kittie, Slipknot, Tallah, Nova Twins
Post-hardcore/metalcore - more into that MCR-ish emo sound? Try Static Dress or If I Die First! Not super heavy, but still with an edge. These are young bands who are again playing in a very 00s space.
Deftones - here's a band that I find pretty accessible! There's definitely a heaviness, but there's also a strong shoegaze influence that creates an opportunity for some really beautiful songs. This band has been active since the 90s, huge catalog of great albums. Start with White Pony. There are a lot of bands right now who are very influenced by Deftones - if you like this band check out Loathe or Moodring next
Stoner/Doom - we're talking about big fuzzy riffs here! Slow/mid-tempo songs usually with a longer song length than more punk-influenced subgenres. Try bands like Windhand, Faetooth, Red Fang, or King Woman
No Harsh Vocals Please - okay, like heavy sounds but don't like the screaming? Check out these bands: Katatonia, Evergrey, Unleash the Archers
There's so much more I could get into but I need to stop eventually. I hope you find something you like somewhere in these recommendations! If you do, feel free to come back to me with what worked for you and I can offer more suggestions along that line.
Happy listening 🤘

what music do you listen to? (genres, artists, albums, anything!)
OOOH, that's a cool question! Thank you so much for it, anon :)
I, for real, am one of those that listen and loves absolutely any genre: from jazz to death metal, from ambient to viral pop!
But I can certainly say that my favorite genres are blackgaze, folk, symphonic metal and pop punk! With Paramore being my all-time favorite band ever, by the way, followed by Spiritbox, Chelsea Wolfe and Alcest! And, of course, Hozier!
I can ramble about music for hours and hours, but I promise I'll keep it short. I'm always down for both giving and receiving music recommendations, so feel free to send me some! I promise I'll listen!
Also, I even have a specific playlist for this blog, which you can check out here! It's mostly folk, black metal, OSTs and some more!

there were a lot of good tracks this month! judging by some of the new singles, early 2024 is shaping up to be a cool time for new releases. another note, i'm not sure if i'll do a favorite songs of december because i might just do a favorite songs of the year thing instead. i wanted to do one or the other because doing both would be a lot of work and i wanna enjoy my winter break tbh!!!!
as always feel free to follow me on rate your music and twitter (i’m not calling it X)
"Mother Nature" - MGMT
◇ featured on Loss of Life - MGMT (not yet released) ◇ genres: neo-psychedelia, indie rock
This February we’re finally getting the follow-up to MGMT’s incredible 2018 album Little Dark Age! The lead single to this new record has the band exploring fresh, new sounds to great effect. MGMT are no stranger to psychedelia, but this track has them taking a considerably less electronic approach to it. The songwriting is some of their strongest to date. Very excited about this new album.
"I Swear, I Really Wanted to Make a 'Rap' Album but This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time" - André 3000
◇ featured on New Blue Sun - André 3000 ◇ genres: new age, ambient
This month we finally received the first full-length solo project from hip hop legend André 3000. As the title of this song suggests, this is a much different direction than his work in OutKast over 16 years ago. On this album, André explores ambient or occasionally jazzy soundscapes driven by the flute (his recent instrument of choice). This track is gorgeous with André’s flute passages taking center stage. This whole project is definitely worth a listen.
"Now And Then" - The Beatles
◇ featured on The Beatles 1967-1970 (2023 Edition) [The Blue Album] - The Beatles ◇ genres: piano rock, baroque pop
The jokes have been played out by this point about “these Beatles guys are good, they’re going places!”, but it is still bizarre to have a brand new Beatles song in 2023. I highly recommend watching the documentary about the history of this song and how it came to be. Admittedly, that documentary played a big role in my enjoyment of this song. It feels like a fitting send-off for one of the greatest bands of all time. Is it overproduced? Yeah lol, but this project is clearly driven by Paul McCartney who, as everyone should know, is no stranger to overblown schmaltz. We love him for it! Will this ever be lauded as one of band’s best songs? No, but it’s still very good.
"Celibate" - Danny Brown
◇ featured on Quaranta - Danny Brown ◇ genre: abstract hip hop
This new Danny Brown album lived up to most of my expectations while also subverting them. Brown takes a more introspective approach which really sets this project apart from his previous work. This track has been in constant rotation for me since it dropped. Danny's more subdued delivery works very well with the feature from MIKE (who just dropped a strong contender for rap album of the year). Really enjoyed this track and also the entire project.
‧₊˚✧ BEST SONG OF THE MONTH ✧˚₊‧ "Oral" - Björk & Rosalía
◇ genres: art pop, electronic
I thought this track would be good, but this is like unbelievably good. Björk wrote this track during her "classic period", but it never saw the light of day until this reworked version with Rosalía. These two work so well together. Björk's trademark ethereal sound shines through hear and the occasional reggaeton percussion underneath is a very nice touch. The chorus is a highlight in both of their careers and thats coming from someone who holds both of these artists in very high regard (admittedly mostly Björk, although MOTOMAMI ranked very high for me last year). Please give this a listen! Not only is this a great track, but its for a good cause!!! All streaming proceeds go to protecting Icelandic fish from harmful fish farms.
"Wall of Eyes" - The Smile
◇ featured on Wall of Eyes - The Smile (not yet released) ◇ genres: art rock, psychedelic folk, post-rock
The Smile are returning with a new record out in January and this track is very good! A few months ago they dropped "Bending Hectic" which, if you're keeping up, was my favorite track back in June. That track is making it on the album so even if this song wasn't good, I would be stoked. Luckily, this track is really good. I love the bossa nova inspired guitar throughout the song, the hazy psychedelic sound, and the small string flourishes. Really beautiful stuff. I can't wait to hear the rest of the record!
"Red Flags" - Brittany Howard
◇ featured on What Now - Brittany Howard (not yet released) ◇ genres: psychedelic soul, neo-psychedelia
Look, I don't know why so many banger psychedelic songs dropped this month, but I'm not complaining. I was a big fan of Brittany Howard's last record and the announcement of her new album flew completely under my radar until I was made aware of this single. This is an interesting new sound for Howard, but she pulls it off really well. If the whole record is stuff like this, we're in for a treat.

🎶✨ when u get this u have to put 5 songs u actually listen to, publish. then, send this ask/tag 10 of your favourite followers (non-negotiable, positivity is cool)✨🎶
oh my god
thank you @anything-thats-rock-and-roll!
i know barely anyone on here, i mostly just blog into the void and chat with art people, so i’m just gonna answer and run. if anyone sees this, feel free to put your own 5 songs!
watch out, cause i listen to a lot of progressive rock, so a lot of these are over ten minutes long.
Here’s five epic songs i’ve been listening to on repeat this week:
🎶 XTC - No Thugs In Our House (it’s just fun. I also recommend their songs Senses Working Overtime and Jason and the Argonauts)
🎵 Renaissance - Ashes Burning (this song turns 50 this year!!! Such an underrated band. British. female singer. what more do you need? This song is over 11 minutes long, but unlike some prog, the singing starts basically right away, and it’s wonderful.)
🎼 Magellan - The Great Goodnight (my dad and i spent yesterday driving around listening to music and we put this one on for the 500th time. My dad and his brother found this in the 90s only because they were looking for new prog (which most would say was dead unless you were SEARCHING, and these two nerds were) and found this. This song is like, 50 minutes long, and it can be a little much, both with the obsessiveness that overtook the singer and the sheer length of it. Trent, the singer’s brother died in Vietnam (in May 1966), after he got shot. he would’ve been okay, but they couldn’t get to him to save him. the brother didn’t even get drafted, he volunteered to go. Trent’s parents didn’t tell him about it because they were so traumatized about the event. He just had a memory of playing on this guy’s shoulders but didn’t know who it was until he found a box in the attic and dug into it more and found out about his brother. Trent Gardner also attempted to put out a musical called Leonardo the Absolute Man that didn’t get picked up, but the demo songs still exist, and it’s cool to check out.) sorry. i deleted a lot too, lol, but the description is kind of necessary for this song.
🎶 The Ocean Blue - Ballerina Out of Control (another super underrated group! This is a very very good song. Trust me. it is not prog, it is a normal song.)
🎵 Rush - Cygnus X-1: Book 1, The Voyage (Since Rush is a major love of mine, and i fall asleep to this every night, Cygnus has to be on here. This song is basically about an astronaut that goes into a black hole called Cygnus X-1. Not that special story-wise, but wonderful music-wise, if you like crazy sci-fi shit, scary void-bass (trust me), and Geddy Lee. I just like how he says 🎶on my ship the Rocinante🎶. It’s cute and groovy. But things get spicy in *gasp* Cygnus X-1: Book 2, Hemispheres?!?! Yes! that’s right folks! Little did anyone know, this song would have a seamless sequel on the album appropriately named: Hemispheres! While I prefer book one, Hemispheres is fun if you’re a fan of Rush and their little triumvirate inserting themselves into their songs (three travelers from Willowdale, my friends) But book 2 is fun because basically, the astronaut lives, and he shows up in this society that is being battled over by Apollo (as the god of reason) and Dionysus (as the god of emotional party vibes) and the astronaut becomes ✨cygnus✨ the god of ✨balance✨ Neil Peart liked to show off how many books he read by making Geddy screech out his lyrics. Lil alex zivojinovic just wants to play his guitarrrr.)

For the fanfic asks :) 💔🎶🛠
Thanks so much for asking!
💔 Is there a fic of yours that broke your heart?
New Skins and Old Memories was my first Milathos fic, and it’s so sad and bittersweet, but I love it anyway.
🎶 Do you listen to music while you write? What song have you been playing on loop lately?
I do always have music on when I’m writing. I have a handful of albums and playlists I always go to when in doubt, but I often listen to specific things for whatever I’m working on. For instance, for the Lawrence of Arabia fic I recently posted, I made a playlist of opera duets with men, so lots of Verdi, particularly La forza del destino.
🛠What tools/programs/apps do you use to write?
I love writing by hand. And I love my fancy journals and fountain pens. A friend just sent me a bunch of ink samples, so lately I’ve been using them in my Pilot Petit since it’s a reliable, cheap fountain pen. And the latest notebook I’ve been using a lot is this Kanso notebook from JetPens. But also love my Lamy Al-Stars and Kaweco Sport pens and I have plenty of Moleskine and Paperblanks journals I use regularly. Because I’m not a great typist, I’ve taken to photographing my writing and using Google Lens to transfer it to Microsoft Word. It has some weird hiccups due to being evolving tech and my sloppy handwriting, but it’s saving me a ton of time.
Thanks again for asking! Folks should feel free to send me more.

Sue Massek Project - Blog #2 - Loving Nancy
Okay, we need to talk about “Loving Nancy.” When Sue asked me to apprentice with her, I’m pretty sure I awkwardly blurted out that I wanted to learn her version of this song. Sue recorded this song on her 2015 release, Precious Memories. The album utilizes songs she arranged for a one woman play she starred in on the life of Sarah Ogan Gunning.
I listen to music voraciously so I’m always cautious about saying I don’t know a song or when I first heard a song, but I remember doing a double take when I bought this album from Sue and this track played. The song was very strange to me because although it’s told from the perspective of the male, it’s a tragic song that acknowledges Nancy has no agency in the story it tells and as such, her heart breaks. While loving someone who doesn’t love you back isn’t unusual in ballads, the set up of this one just struck me as strange. There’s clear elements of being a work song and some of the ideas point to it being a very old ballad retrofitted into a new location. It's an odd 'I have a girl back home, but she probably hates me I don't care' kind of song. (Ballad experts feel free to weigh in here.)
Have a listen to Sarah’s version before we go any further. This is on her album Girl of Constant Sorrow, available here: https://folkways.si.edu/sarah-ogan-gunning/girl-of-constant-sorrow
Sarah’s version.

The album liner notes are available online here: https://folkways-media.si.edu/docs/folkways/artwork/FLG00026-LP.pdf Thank you, Smithsonian Folkways. In particular, this is what the notes say about “Loving Nancy” on page 8:
Sarah, while very young, learned a number of songs from her mother, Sarah Elizabeth Lucas Garland, from “Lizzie’s” sisters, and their children. Such pieces were known to the Lucases for many generations and were brought directly from the British Isles or absorbed from other Anglo-American singers in Kentucky. This particular variant of “Loving Nancy” is not found in standard collections; however the text is transcribed (brochure) by Betty Garland from her own singing in her 1964 Folkways album.
Since Nancy is a most common ballad name, it is difficult to place the “Lucas” variant in a specific ballad family. “Farewell Charming Nancy” (Laws K 14) has the hero steer his boat to the East Indies; Sarah’s hero street his boat to New Alena (Orleans). Jim Garland has suggested to his daughter Betty that Kentucky men who rafted logs out of the mountains sang “Loving Nancy.” Perhaps we see here an ocean voyage localized to a trip down the Ohio-Mississippi. Before this piece is placed directly in the “Farewell Charming Nancy” category, one must note that Sarah’s song ends with Nancy’s death by heartbreak, exactly like many heroines in “William and Nancy II” (Laws P 5). Normally one would assume Sarah’s song to be spliced out of these two ballads. However, her intervening stanzas contain commonplaces which appear elsewhere. I cite only the “write a fine hand” reference in Sharp’s “Pretty Saro” and the “salmon” reference in Creighton’s “Pretty Polly.” This latter figure suggests both the theme of animal disguises to escape pursuit in “The Two Magicians” (Child 44), and the imagery of chase and conquest in the amatory “Hares on the Mountain” collected by Sharp and others in England (Dean-Smith).
Betty Garland, American Folk Ballads, Folkways 2307.
I’m going to travel the wilderness through,
Therefore, loving Nancy, I’ll bid you adieu.
I’m going to travel a many a long mile,
Therefore, loving Nancy, I’ll leave you for a while.
Down in New Alena my boat I will steer
And the face of many pretty girls I see on the shore.
But the face of a Spaniard I’d never adore,
Go back to Kentucky, try Nancy once more.
I wish I was a clerks man, could write a fine hand,
I’d write my love a letter that she’d understand.
I’d send it on water that’d never overflow,
Go back to Kentucky, try Nancy once more.
I wish I was a fisherman down by the seaside
And Nancy was a salmon come floating on the tide.
I’d throw my net around her and bring her to shore,
Go back to Kentucky, try Nancy once more.
Loving Nancy, loving Nancy, I have returned home,
I always did love you and for your sake mourned.
We’re going to get married, I doubt for your sake.
I threw my arms around her, and felt her heart break.
Anyone else bothered that they called the narrator the hero? Yikes.
I looked up Farewell, Charming Nancy and the vibes seem quite different. The song is described as: "The sailor bids his sweetheart farewell. She does not wish to part, and offers to go with him. He tells her that she simply is not strong enough for life at sea. They part sadly. Some texts warn girls against trusting sailors[.]" You can read the notes here: https://balladindex.org/Ballads/LK14.html
Betty Garland’s version can be found here, if you’d like to listen:

Betty’s version remains available through Smithsonian Folkways here: https://folkways.si.edu/betty-garland/american-folk-ballads/music/album/smithsonian
Betty's version seems strangely optimistic to me after listening to Sue's version for so many years.
The liner notes say regarding this song:
Lovin’ Nancy is an old mountain folk song, have no record of it ever coming out of England, it has been our family since before the Civil War and it has been considered by our family that it was composed by our grandfather Wilson Lucas or I should say my great grandfather or one of his songs who were all singers. This song although it says “my boat I will stir”, would be be more correct if it said, “down to the Ohio my log raft I will stir”, because these men who rafted logs down the Kentucky river sand this song and this was before there was any railroads in the mountains. Have never heard it sung by anyone but the Garland family and was handed down to me from my father Jim Garland and to him from his mother Elizabeth Lucas Garland who learned it from her father Wilson Lucas.
The notes go on to include the lyrics. I will note, the New Alena line is different. “It’s down to New Orleans my boat I will stir.”
Sue’s version can be found online here:
Sue plays in a thumb lead 2 finger style, which she indicates she learned this style from Blanche Coldiron. Sarah Ogan Gunning borrowed from the melody of this song for her famous song “Come All You Coal Miners” which Sue’s band, Reel World String Band, does. In order to keep them separate, Sue plays “Loving Nancy” in a 2 finger style while she does “Come All You Coal Miners” in a clawhammer style.
Here's Sarah singing “Come All You Coal Miners" if you'd like to compare melodies.
youtube
As the Smithsonian notes indicate, a quick search of “Loving Nancy” will get you songs more akin to other songs. Dock Boggs version reminds me of the “Waggoner’s Lad” or “Pullin’ Away” though there’s some overlap with the lyrics.

The full liner notes can be found here: https://folkways-media.si.edu/docs/folkways/artwork/FW03903.pdf
Dock says he got the song from a neighbor woman named Holbrook when he was living in Mayking. He changed the tune in 1965 which is what’s on the recording.
The original text of this song was written on lined tablet paper headed ‘Ballad of Loving Nancy Aug. 22, 1904 Leslie (or Lester) Ky.’ Dock adds that he thinks Mistress Holbrooks’ grandmother (born 1878) sang this song.
In picking apart Sue’s version, I’ve been describing the structure as A, B, B, A. The A line is low and the B line is high. (I'm sure this is improper and I don't care.) It’s ultimately, just a few measures of melody. While the haunting sound of sawmill is apparent, Sue actually plays this song in standard G tuning due to the play. She wanted to avoid retuning on stage.

IGUAL QUE UN ÁNGEL
@stunie — Hajime Umemiya.
To love is to adore, to be vulnerable, and devoted. To him, you're just like an angel, loving him purely and unconditionally. He's eternally grateful for your presence, making him feel as if he's God's favorite.
PENSAMIENTOS INTRUSIVOS
@kajibunny — Hayato Suo.
Yesterday, today, tomorrow; unwanted thoughts oftentimes linger through your mind. After rough experiences with love, he's more than ready to show you how much he loves you to make those intrusive thoughts fly away.
DIOSA
@kaiser1ns — Hajime Umemiya, Yamato Endo, Jo Togame.
A celebration of self-love, empowerment, and confidence. He's always by your side, as if he's in a trance, spoiling you and always having you on his mind. He is more than willing to worship you like the goddess that you are.
TE MATA
@maruflix — Takiishi Chika & Hajime Umemiya.
Knowing your worth is the first step towards self-love. After escaping a toxic relationship you find the love of your life. However, you also find yourself being depicted as a devil by your ex. It's time to embrace the role of devil, because he will never be able to cut off your wings, and that kills him.
PERDISTE
@gyuriac — Sae Itoshi.
What's done is done, and it needs to be left behind. So, after a gruesome breakup, why can't he get you off his mind? After many attempts to replace you, he's at a crossroads. He lost you, and that's got to hurt.
YOUNG, RICH & IN LOVE
@hayatoseyepatch — Mitsuki Kiryu, Hayato Suo, Mikage Reo, Michael Kaiser.
Better stay out of grown folks' business! With him, you live life to the fullest. Your love is luxurious, and having such a supportive and committed partner makes you feel liberated. Whether it's you riding him or both riding into the sunset, you live your lives being young, rich, and in love.
TU CORAZÓN ES MÍO
@17020 — Toma Hiragi, Ren Kaji, Hajime Umemiya, Jo Togame.
There is absolutely no one like him. All you hear is that young love is nothing more than miserable. With him, though, it's the complete opposite. He is your present and future, going through thick and thin together. Your heart is his, and his heart is yours.
NO HAY LEY, PARTE 2
@fyodoro — Yoichi Isagi, Michael Kaiser, Rin Itoshi.
A forbidden love. A relationship that might seem unconventional, but you don't care. Love knows no boundaries and rules, and the connection you have with him is unreal. There are no laws when it comes to love.

⠀Dokken's token bassist has arrived! Will he talk ⠀about batman comics? Will he chat your ears ⠀off? Will he drink the last beer?
Nsfw and such is fine, I don't mind it! (Anything descriptive is for dms only! and please be respectful, I won't hesitate to block.)
My writing is usually literate, so changing layout forms is gonna be awkward for me, but I'm learning!
I also write the darker topics that come with rock stars and the 80s, which is another reason I don't write with most minors! If anything might be triggering, feel free to block!!
Much of my portrayal is both fact and fiction, so don't think of everything I write as true! I am not affiliated with Jeff Pilson.
Side blogs are @outofthecellar @whitesnakez & @bigcityroadie
Personal blog is @quiet-riot-breathless
⠀⠀⠀⠀Now onto Jeff!
Set during the release of the album Under Lock And Key (1985), so Jeff has been with Dokken for two years!
Jeff took on the role of bassist for Dokken after Juan Croucier left to join Ratt.
Known for being energetic and he's so sweet he'll give you cavities!
Tries to be the mediator between Don and George but it's difficult with his close friendship with George.
Once got abducted by a hardcore parental censorship group! Thankfully managed to bail without any harm done.
A bit of a nerd, Jeff loves Batman comics, Lord Of The Rings, Star Trek, and other fantasy/sci-fi medias.
Jeff plays bass both with and without a pick.
As an addict, Jeff sometimes suffers from paranoia episodes when under the influence.
Unlabeled! Not really closeted or open about it either. What happens in the back of the bus, stays in the back of the bus!
Super affectionate, no one is safe from hugs whenever he's around! A bit of a clinger, keeps him from bouncing all over the place.
⠀⠀That's all for now folks!
