Louise was seventeen the summer she'd met him, though she couldn't remember where. Maybe some party or other. He'd had a kind of elegance about his disaffected stare, his hair slicked back, not handsome enough to be James Dean, not interesting enough to be Bob Dylan.

Maybe it was the unabashed mediocrity that drew her in, the almost clinical detachment. It couldn't have been love, but smoking on the quilt spread on his bed, half-empty bottles of coke and dog-eared magazines forgotten on the floor beside his nightstand, it sometimes seemed like should have been enough.
