A question that's come up a few times regarding the revised draft of Eat God is how to come up with Expressions to go with your Forms. Some folks have gotten the idea that Expressions are meant to narrow the scope of your Forms by putting prescriptive boundaries on the circumstances under which they can be used, when in fact it's the opposite – they're meant to broaden the circumstances under which your Traits can be tagged for bonus dice by linking each one to a dimension of your character's personality; tagging a lot of Forms on tests relating to mental and social pursuits is going to be tough, but their Expressions give you added flexibility.
As a user on the Penguin King Games Discord aptly put it, Expressions reflect "[...] the lived experience of moving in the world in this particular muppet body". The current draft doesn't contain much by way of example, however (mostly owing to the Forms list not yet being finalised), so I thought I might offer a few examples here in case anyone would find that helpful. Here are some fairly prosaic examples of the sorts of Expressions one might attach to various Forms:
Bottomless Belly
Indulgent – You encourage people to try new experiences, culinary or otherwise.
Refined – That you can eat literally anything does not oblige you to be indiscriminate; perish forbid!
Firm Flesh
Patient – You've got all the time in the world.
Stubborn – You're hard-headed in more ways than one.
Hundred-Handed
Self-reliant – Who needs a helping hand when you've so many of your own?
Absent-minded – Sometimes the left hand really doesn't know what the right hand is doing.
Primordial Power (Fire)
Hot-blooded – Your feelings burn as hot as your flesh.
Fatalist – The flame that burns brightest burns briefest, and oh, you've burned so very bright.
Prismatic Pelt
Forthright – There's no sense being coy about your feelings when you literally wear them on your sleeve.
Unassuming – You prefer to fade into the background, both literally and metaphorically.
Superior Sense (Hearing and Touch)
Busybody – Oh, you know it's really none of your business, but you couldn't help but overhear...
Paranoid – Can anybody else hear that? How can they not hear that?
(You might notice that many of these pairs of examples adopt precisely opposite interpretations of the underlying Form – which is, of course, the whole point. The wordplay element of many of them is also encouraged, but by no means not mandatory.)
If anyone would like to try their hand at putting together some of their own examples, whether involving these Forms or any of the thirty-ish others in the game's current draft that I haven't covered here, please, feel free – I'd love to get other people's perspectives on how best to make use of this feature of the game's rules, and more worked examples is always better than fewer.

Why we were Like That™, by which I mean so parasocially invested in them that we became, at times, the most annoying people on the internet. My message on Discord's new UI
"I have visual snow syndrome, a symptom of visual snow syndrome is that white text on a very dark background can cause afterimages. You know screen burn? Imagine screen burn in your eyes, where whatever you were looking at is stuck there for up to an hour. Light mode is physically painful and dark mode is disabling. Your new changes are an accessibility nightmare and have made the app fully unusable for me. And that's not even mentioning the fact that a lot of the changes you made to the app are absolutely awful, convoluted and just plain stupid for ease of use. I know companies love to pull the "well we know every single tester has hated it, but we spent a lot of money redesigning it so we're doing it anyway!" card. But this isn't the logo, this isn't the blue, this isn't minor changes you'll stop noticing after a while. This is a huge overhaul that is again AN ACCESSIBILITY NIGHTMARE! Cut your losses and listen to your audience because I'm seeing a lot of people posting API alternatives to Discord in other servers and Reddit. People will not be using your app. Do better. Discord mobile is fully unusable to me until you make changes, I physically cannot look at the text anymore. Please fix it and do the smart thing."
I downloaded the last APK file for Discord before the change, but this is genuinely disheartening. Discord is actively refusing to even read genuine complaints, telling people 'Well this is how it is now'. Much like Tumblr.
Please send feedback on the Discord app as well as on the store pages! Please let them know this isn't the same as just changing the icon or the colour of their blue. This is an actual accessibility issue!
I will admit though, the ONE good thing about the change is the new Media feature while searching chats, but it's completely overshadowed by everything else and the lack of pages (only infinite scroll) makes it difficult to find things.

On Friday, May 31st, 2024, Quotev issued an update that removed the activity feed, the chatbox, the ability to post in groups, the recently added “recommended users” feature, the ability to make individual posts private, the “location” feature on profiles, and backgrounds on the homepage, to name a few things.
They also added a reminder in groups and messages that the two features “are being discontinued and will be removed July 1st.”
This update also added a home button and a button that leads directly to a user's library on the menu bar (situated in a somewhat unbalanced position.)
According to reports of several users, the update happened sometime between 1-2 PM, GMT (I am not entirely sure what time is most accurate, and I did not log on until an hour afterwards.)
Thus began the mass panic. Several users blamed themselves for the removal of the feed, including one user (.hideri) who had among other things apparently make a joking bomb threat the day before. Since the administration had not made a statement in the News section (which was temporarily removed when I logged on, at about 3 PM GMT) no one had any idea whose fault it was. With no other apparent options, users began to move to other platforms to discuss the situation, including twitter, tumblr, reddit (r/Quotev), discord, and plurk. Some users sent messages of protest to the administration.
Around 6 PM GMT, the administration posted a statement in the restored News section.
(note that the time on the post is listed in EST on my device)
The last paragraph, detailing how to archive your messages and group topics, was not included in the post until around a day after it was posted.
Users have continued to move to different platforms. Some seem resigned, while others are determined to challenge the administration with a change.org campaign. Several “quotev discord” servers have been created (spawning their own separate dramas.) A controversy on plurk has emerged, discussing whether or not the recently moved quotev users are disrupting the website.
This all leads us to the question: why? The administration's statement is vague and probably not fully true. What is the actual reason? Can they no longer maintain the website? Were they fed up with the constant drama moderation? Quotev has been no stranger to unpopular updates, but none have been as dramatic as this. Website statistics have shown a huge drop in usage. It's not going to get better when everyone finishes moving their stuff and lurking. It remains to be seen if we will ever truly get a good answer. In the meantime, former users mourn, reminisce, bicker, and will ultimately move on. There has been ridicule for the sadness that we are experiencing, over “just a quiz site.” Yeah, maybe it sounds silly to be so sad, but there is really nothing quite like quotev and the community that it contained, for better or for worse.

I wanna quickly discuss Nintendo Music because I got some thoughts on it and I wish to share them, both good!...
And bad....
Okay, as the fellow Splatoon resident, having only Splatoon 3's launch tracks and having NO songs from later updates, seasonal Splatfests, Side Order and Grand Fest is fucking psychotic to me.
You mean to tell me that they are gonna DRIP FEED SONGS IN PRE EXISTING ALBUMS?!?! WHY DOES ANIMAL CROSSING GET 400 TRACKS YET SPLATOON 3 DOESNT GET ALL OF ITS TRACKS?!?! What's next? Is Splatoon 2 not gonna have Octo Expansion music, and are they gonna update AT A LATER TIME??!!
Are they even gonna update Splatoon 3 at all!?!?!?! UGH! Are we gonna get the live/Grand Fest remixes of tracks too?!? Will Splatoon 1 even get added?! WILL I NEVER GET TO HEAR BOMB RUSH BLUSH BUT INSTEAD THE REMIX THAT MAKES ME FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE TO LISTEN TO?!?! sigh....
Okay enough about Splatoon. How's the music listening experience in general? I would say it's pretty good. Having Wii music in the background as I talk to friends on Discord or do other things is really, really relaxing, and the extension feature is a brilliant idea. However, there's no way to just automatically play extended versions of songs. You have to manually extend the songs, and I think that's kind of annoying.
Now, how's the selection? Gonna be real, shit. It's not good. Why does every console except the switch only have 2 ALBUMS?!?!?!? Metroid having both its versions doesnt count as 3 albums, its the same fucking game. WHERE ARE THE 3DS AND WII U?!?!?
Every console should have had 5 to 8 MINIMUM!!!! I don't care, Nintendo has a library that spans in the thousands for fuck sake, this is unacceptable at launch. But hey, it's Nintendo, that's what they do. NSO started off being god awful but now it's a solid deal for 20 bucks a year. Way more tolerable than what the HELL PS Plus costs.
My biggest concern with this service is when they are gonna drop new albums. Nintendo, for the love of fucking god, do NOT DROP 1 TO 3 ALBUMS PER MONTH!!!! DO NOT DO THAT!!!! This service WILL die if you do that. People will get restless and move on. I do not want a repeat of NSO retro games AGAIN!!!! Just drop a batch every week or two, maybe 3 to 6 albums per 2 weeks or something like that. Don't drop at a minimum 2 per month or two months. DONT! AND MAKE SURE TO HAVE EVERY SONG IN THE ALBUM!!!!
But it's probably not gonna happen.... I know deep down Nintendo is gonna do the classic drip feeding strategy because it just works for them unfortunately... man...
I do like the app but it has ISSUES!!!!! BIG BIG ISSUES AND WORRIES!!!!

Greetings Mr. Man
Any updates on the progress of Rodger DLC?
Oh, yeah! Sorry, I usually just share small, informal updates in my discord server and leave the larger ones to my socials. But, i've been working on it diligently! So here's how things have been going as of late:
I finished 4-5 new pose-sets over the last couple of weeks. One of the new pose-sets is a variant of one already in the game and one is a brand new set for an existing character. Two of them are cameos for characters who've been mentioned but not seen yet (one of them in particular I'm quite excited about, as it features Norm's body model with a rotary phone I physically bought for this cameo!)
Including Peter + Roger's new pose-sets + the new variant I mentioned above, the route has 9 new pose-sets, the most of any route afaik. I'm on the fence about making a 10th, which I might do in the new few days (as there's a fun cameo I've got a few different ideas about how I'd show it on screen.)
The backgrounds are basically all done (just finished another yesterday), the ending slides are all done bar one (though one also needs a mild edit to show Gingi's regrown tail since there's a time-jump.)
Right now, I'm going over the whole script once more and trimming a few parts, adjusting dialogue here and there for a final layer of polish. I got the 'evil' half of the route done earlier today and now I'm doing the 'good' half! The early route is playable in-game and when I'm happy with the last layer of proofreading, I'll be making a major push to finish implementing the rest of the route.
All of the art for the route (minus that one ending slide I mentioned) is finished. A few collaborators of mine finished projects recently and are gonna be working on stuff while I push forward with programming the remaining scenes, including a few new tracks on the OST, a new 3d model for the route and some voice acting for Roger (which obviously won't slow me down as I'll be working alongside them!)
Yeah, the next 3 weeks are gonna be pretty hectic for me. I'm about a week or two behind my own schedule but I'm gonna be pushing to at least have a test version ready for around the end of August. Obviously it's very difficult to predict exactly how long the rest of the route'll take, but just know that I'm busy + working! Roger's route should be out before the Mingus plush campaign goes live, if I can keep my current pace up!

Hey Twitter(/Reddit) alternative seekers
Okay, fandom. Everyone's all worked all the time about this or that new alternative to Twitter and how it's either awesome or it sucks. I'm here to tell you about an OLD alternative: Plurk.
(Note that this was originally formatted for Twitter so forgive the jank thread paragraphing)
Disclaimer: This information is specifically aimed at people who use Twitter for fandom purposes; it is not intended to cover the exhaustive list of things that people use Twitter for (professional networking, art/photography promotion world news, etc). It's friend-centric rather than follow-centric, at least as the existing site culture goes.
So what is Plurk? It's a threaded microblogging platform dating back to 2008 that has only ever seen extremely niche use in English-language use. (Its primary userbase is Chinese-speaking.) It has a purely chronological timeline and a lot of privacy features that you haven't seen since the LJ era (assuming you're old enough to remember that).
Plurk functions through an exclusively-chronological timeline on your homepage (desktop) or in the app. Algorithmically sourced content? We ain't got it! (There is a different page for viewing top content but you have to go there specifically.) Instead, your timeline shows your own content and the content of other plurkers you friend or follow, and the occasional ad (MUCH more occasional than Twitter).
Each top-level plurk can be replied to, and this creates a chain of replies that can be used for conversation. Unlike Twitter and Reddit, replies don't form branching threads; each plurk is only one stream of conversation. Plurks with unread replies will be lit up as unread; however, they can be "muted" to stop them from giving you notifications.
(Two small caveats: You cannot mute your own plurks, and there is actually a cap of around 200 muted plurks. Mutes will fall off from the oldest, so you'll sometimes see an ancient plurk pop back up on your timeline if someone comes back to it. You can just mute it again.)
Your plurk timeline has a global privacy control. If your timeline is set to private, only people you have friended can see what you say on there. If your timeline is public, then anyone who comes to you page can see what you've posted, AND logged-in users can share your post on their own timeline with the "replurk" function (works just like a normal retweet), as well as reply to it.
There is also an "anonymous" option, which anonymizes you and also the names of everyone who replies (it randomly generates names like "lemon354" and "libra262" for repliers to differentiate them). Anonymous plurks will stay within your timeline if your plurk is set to private, but can be replurked if it's public.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE, because individual plurks can also be given specific privacy levels: -> Friends only (if your timeline is public but you don't want this one getting around) -> Private to "cliques," which are Twitter circles but you can have more than one -> Individual users (including those not on your friends list - this is plurk's equivalent of DMs)
Your own plurk homepage is also insanely customizable, if you want to break out the CSS or even just have a custom background. You can also alter your display name (though the character cap is VERY short), and your display name color, as well as the standard avatar change. Usernames cannot be changed as a free user, but can be changed by paid users (more on paid options in a second).
Plurk also has its own image hosting, and a pastebin-alike plaintext called Plurk Paste that has no character limit. (The character limit for top-level plurks is longer than Twitter's.)
It also has CUSTOM EMOTES in addition to its (somewhat wild) default selection. They're similar to Discord's customs, except that you can use GIFs from the get go; what's restricted is the number of slots you have as a free user. (And size is capped at 48x48 px.)
Plurk has ads, but they're mostly unobtrusive (and can be clocked entirely with ad blockers, but I didn't say that). Plurk keeps the lights on through a subscription model called Plurk Coin, which is very cheap (under $2.50 USD/month) and can be gifted to other users. Coin gives you a number of benefits including the "Except" privacy option, more username colors, response editing, and a bunch more custom emote slots.
Concerned about harassment? Plurk has one of the most robust blocking systems in social media that I've ever seen. You block someone, and they can't see you (even by going to your profile) and you can't see them. That's it, done. Full no-contact.
NSFW/18+ content is allowed. There's a specific flag for it when you first post a plurk. Plurk does expect you to use that tag when appropriate, but is otherwise very forgiving of NSFW content, at least in my experience. (Again, though, English plurk is a very small community ATM).
The thing to remember about Plurk is that it is very much a remnant of an older internet, from the days before algorithms. Like Tumblr, it's a social media where you won't see anything if you don't reach out to follow and friend people. It predates "going viral" as a goal of internet usage. The goal is to talk to people.
As an aside: Since I originally wrote this up, I've seen rumors about Japanese fanartists moving to plurk and even seen one or two mentions of it in the wild on my Twitter timeline as people talk about following those artists. Chapter 1 Update is Here! ✦ DEMO
+10k words added to Chapter 1, bringing the total word count to 50k (with code)
More curt/unfriendly options towards mortals and other gods (Salvatore, parents, etc.)
More customization options, including new hair colors, eye colors, and distinctive features in Chapter 1
Multipronouns you can set in Chapter 1 (may change in future chapters)
Choice of clothes to wear to the Ceremony, which ROs may compliment if they like (3 out of 6 options for each of them!)
A new scene with your parents before the Ceremony where you can decide your relationship with them! (affects dialogue)
Option to storm off if you're mad at Ciocana, especially if you're touch-averse
Misc edits, bug fixes, and background performance improvements
This update is a massive improvement for new readers rather than warranting an entirely new playthrough. If you have any saves right before the Ceremony, you can find the most content there! However, the changes and additions are all over the demo.

Minor rewording for Karen encounter.
MC can now openly grimace when mortals call for MC's attention in Chapter 1. Previously, the only real negative reaction to them is turning away, which is open for any interpretation as to why MC does so.
When mortals ask for MC's help, MC can snap at them to speak quickly.
Most choices suggested you are friendly with Nero, so added a couple of options that are neutral towards him, leaning towards dismissive.
Rewrote a line that says you waved to Nero goodbye. It simply says that he departs.
Added an option to be frustrated with the conversation about mortals, when the only other non-positive options about mortals were about being completely disinterested.
Added an option where the MC says they can take care of themselves or they don't need other people worrying about them so much.
When choosing to be touch averse, selective, or not touch averse, you can now choose to be selective and not want to touch Rafaele, which initially was not an option.
If you are the Universal Eye, you tell Salvatore about the Universe being in pain and they dismiss it, you may be able to refuse conversation with them. They might keep talking to you, but you won't respond to them.
Can decide your relationship to your parents. Can also decide if you're open about your feelings towards them or not.
Variations in how your parents speak to you while preparing and during the Ceremony if they are aware of your bitterness towards them.
Can again openly express disdain for mortals or keep your feelings to yourself when answering Rafaele's question, when originally those options were absent
Can storm off from Ciocana if you do not express positive feelings about the dance, especially if you are touch-averse.
Added blue, pink, purple, and no hair options to Chapter 1, not available in the prologue.
Added red and gold eye colors to Chapter 1, not available in the prologue.
Added clothes option to Chapter 1 to wear to the Ceremony.
ROs will comment on your clothes if they particularly like it during the Ceremony (each have 3 out of 6 clothes they like.)
Added pronouns before the Ceremony. You can have multiple pronouns, remove them, and add multiple of the same kind to increase its chances of frequency.

Just poring over some of the new images. ◕‿◕
Rogue Rook. I love this Rook, I wonder if they could be the 'default'-kinda Rook..? The detail in this game is incredible, look at the different textures and intricate patterns on clothes (in places you can even see where it's raised/three-dimensional when appropriate), carved designs on the wood of the bow, the textures on hairs, the folds of fabric and the way it hangs, the strung bow, light glinting off Taash's jewel-horn and gold pieces, etc. loads of care put into it and attention to detail. on Rook's chest is the Veilguard symbol. Taash and Neve look amazing too, and the team is ready to go! In the bottom right, is that a chest we can loot? ^^ Maybe this moment is from shortly after entering a new area, and the camera is about to transition from a cutscene kinda scene to a gameplay scene? like they've just gotten here, had a lil conversation about it, and are about to head off exploring. where do you think this shot was taken? it kind of reminds me a bit of this concept art of the Deep Roads.
I really like the decision to prominently feature Bellara and Davrin on this cover. Bellara's magic device is activated - are the triangles being drawn towards her, or are they flying out away from her? ^^ its green glow makes me think of Fadey stuff. Harding looks to have the same bow as here, with the Inquisition hairy eyeball symbol, fitting for a Hero of the Inquisition. in the background is the familiar outwards energy burst motif (example one on the right, example two). the rest of the team are present in the foreground, ready to cast or running towards the battle. the ground, dark rock, is aflame. in the background we can see telltale floating rocks and some structures. maybe this shot is 'set' in the same place as the group fight that takes place at the end of the character trailer, as here?
In this version of the image, we can more clearly see tentacle-like objects in the bottom right, which make me think of Blight corruption and what we can see around the dragon here. the other thing I wanna say about this art is you can tell care has been taken to differentiate the companions and make them unique. like both Emmrich and Neve are mages and casting, but they hold their weapons in different ways and have different stances. Emmrich's staff is green with the light of necromancy, Neve's is blue with ice magic. both Taash and Lucanis are fighters, and running, but even from a static image you can see variation in the way that they move. You can almost hear Taash's powerful 'stomp-stomp-stomp' whereas Lucanis has more of a sense of speed and streamlined motion. it reminds me of what was said in the Discord Q&A about "characterful"-ness:
This game contains “the deepest companion arcs” that they have ever done - not just in a Dragon Age game, but in a BioWare game in general. “Being able to work across all the disciplines, building characters who look and sound and behave in very specific and characterful ways.” Each companion has their own story arc you can go through, decisions you can make. “They really do take center stage. As you play through them, you see the care and love that the team has put into each one.” [link]
You know, like they are looking and moving different in very specific and "characterful" ways. Also look at this -
This looks to be Lucanis in early concept art (art by Matt Rhodes). he moves in such a specific, 'characterful' way, and it's carried through from the concept art.
my last thought here is that this cover reminded me of the group/team fight scene in this Inquisition trailer. you know, like the whole gang is here and ready to go, ground aflame, black rock, Fadey stuff going on.

Happy New Year, everyone! I thought it would be fun to do a little retrospective on the game's progress over the last year... Shepherds of Haven has grown so much from the little demo I posted in January 2018, and it continues to steadily build and flourish in so many different and exciting ways! Here's a look at just some of the things we accomplished in 2023!
I added 143,151 words to the game (2.5 main chapters, 8 new character interludes) in 2023: the equivalent of writing the longest Lord of the Rings book in one year! We also broke our huge 1 million word milestone—without including code—meaning Shepherds of Haven is now officially twice as long as War and Peace, and almost as long as the entire 7-book Harry Potter series... and all in a single game!
A lot goes into game creation behind the scenes, including the coordination and creation of visual assets for the game—like character cards, codex entries, maps, portraits, and backgrounds—fun stuff for the fans (like the MC info template we created), and songs for the official soundtrack. As the game creeps slowly and determinedly towards its initial completion, that also means learning new things as a solo developer to prepare for the future, like learning to build an official website, researching business and tax practices, and beginning to think about how to conduct testing, publishing, and marketing down the road. Much of what I enumerate here hasn't been made public yet and will continue to cook in the background for a while, but I'm very proud of the work I've gotten done this year and will be excited to unveil more in the future!
And of course, for even more Shepherds of Haven content, I've added and completed even more stories for our little library on Patreon (which also has sizable word count at this point): The Bridge of Bones (a Trouble and Riel murder mystery), O Happy Dagger (a dark adventure featuring Briony, Chase, and Red), and The Hunt (a wild tale involving Tallys, Halek, Shery, and new kinds of spirits, fey magic, and Elves) were all serial stories completed in 2023, while Some Kind of Virus is a cyberpunk zombie apocalypse AU that will continue to be updated with new chapters monthly.

I hope you enjoyed this session of Shepherds of Haven Wrapped! Honestly, this doesn't actually cover everything I've been working on, but some things can't be packaged and listed out neatly, or otherwise won't seem very interesting to anyone else but me! 😂 As we inch through Chapter 9 and get more interludes done (only a few more main chapters to go), I'm hopeful that I'll also be able to find time to work on my next novel, but we'll see if the Shepherds schedule ends up ramping up or settling down as we work steadily towards finishing the main story!
One important thing before wrapping up is to acknowledge your guys' role in this wonderful, wild journey. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for your invaluable contributions to the development of Shepherds of Haven. Whether you took the time to share links to the game, supported its growth on Discord or Patreon, left encouraging messages or asked interesting questions, reported bugs, or showcased your remarkable works of fanfiction or fanart, I am sincerely thankful for the unwavering support from this amazing community! Your collective efforts have played a pivotal role in shaping the world of the game into what it is today. Words cannot adequately convey my gratitude for your support, and I am truly blessed to have such a passionate community surrounding this project.
As we step into 2024, I am filled with anticipation for the developments awaiting Shepherds of Haven. Big things are on the horizon, and I am so excited to share these experiences with you!
