Wanda's question is a direct reflection of exactly how he feels inside. Long fingers entangle with hers, brushing the backs of her knuckles against the edge of his thigh. Black dress pants provide a slick friction over her soft skin. They look so out of place. Formal get togethers? Even if they're celebrating, he could think of a dozen and a half better ways to do that than to stuff them all together in what feels like a pressure cooker of admiring wait staff, plus ones of other invited guests he doesn't know and the actual people he wants to see.

Tuxedos and polished looks? Yeah, he can do the part. But he's so damn uncomfortable that he'd rather crawl out of his skin than do the mingling thing. Wanda looks amazing. Beautiful from head to toe. The wait staff can't take their eyes off her every time one passes by. Makes him grin against the lip of his beer that he refused to let them pour into a glass. Might be six or seven star or whatever, but ruining a damn good beer for a showy presentation?

That's a sin he's not willing to watch in person.

Lashes fall as his eyelids drop to veil his gaze from view, lips pucker and an audible--pondering, "Hmmmm," comes rolling out of his throat. Deep and thoughtful. He's dragging it out because--now that he knows they're both in Purgatory? Might as well torture her a little bit it. Even if it means torturing himself in the meantime. Might be the most fun he's had all night.

"Don't know.. Think it's rude to just drink and go? Or do we make a quick circle and disappear before anyone makes us sit at a table and small talk?" Brows shove together and he looks at her with a hopeless smile. "You know I'm not good at that." Eyes roll towards the ceiling as he laughs, shaking his head and cutting himself off with another swig right after. "Fuck. I don't know why I let myself get talked into these things anyway... Do we do the small talk thing?"

"Or is that too much...? Can it be too much? I guess we can make it be too much.."

The Aftermath

The scent of healing potions and antiseptic ointments lingered in the air as Remus Lupin lay in the hospital wing. While his body no longer ached from the recent transformation, he was in no hurry to leave the bed and rejoin the student population of Hogwarts. Madam Pomfrey had graciously allowed him an extra day to recover. Given the incident that took place during the full moon, he reckoned that she would probably allow him to stay as long as he wanted.

Remus was not ready to face his friends. If he allowed them to explain themselves he would forgive them. He knew he would. He knew whatever occurred had a reasonable explanation. James and Sirius were reckless but they weren't cruel. And they wouldn't put his life in jeopardy on purpose. They had sworn an oath to it after all. 

James, eager to check on Remus, tried to visit as soon as he had left Dumbledore's office the night after the moon, but Remus had feigned sleep and ignored his friend. Peter, carrying a load of schoolwork the next morning had dropped it off in silence. James must have warned him of Remus's state. The isolation within the hospital wing gave Remus time to think, and when he finally decided to leave, he knew he would have to confront the inevitable.

He hated that he had allowed himself to believe that he wasn't a monster. That he was perhaps a normal student. But the event was a harsh reminder that he was a danger. He couldn't be trusted. And he wanted to remember this feeling a little longer before allowing himself to be drawn into the contagious carefree nature of his friends.  

As the day wore on Remus gathered his strength and stepped out of the hospital wing. He saw James and Sirius just as he expected to, waiting for him along the corridor. Determined, he marched past them, hearing their footsteps trailing behind him. Ignoring the rules and potential consequences, he continued out of the castle and toward the mountains. Consequences were clearly something they didn't think about anymore.

Upon reaching a secluded spot, Remus turned to face his friends. The tension in the air was palpable, and before James could speak (because he was always the first to say anything), Remus exploded.

"What the fuck happened?! No - don’t answer - it doesn’t matter! Dumbledore told me everything. How fucking stupid - Why? Snape?! Really?! Do you understand what could have happened?! You are the most foolish arrogant asshole!" Remus's voice, usually calm and measured, reverberated against the rocky landscape. He wasn't sure if he was yelling at Sirius or James or both. He was probably yelling at himself too if he was being honest. He shouldn't have left the hospital wing. He clearly wasn't able to handle this situation like he thought he should. His pre-rehearsed lecture had vanished and been replaced with incoherent words that didn't fit into a sentence.

James, attempting to diffuse the situation, raised his hands defensively. "Moony, just take a breath, okay? If you could listen, you’d understand…”

"Don’t! James, really?! I am allowed to be angry about this. I… I… You…" Remus trailed off, collapsing onto a boulder, his face buried in his hands. A hoarse sob vibrated through his frail body.

The mountain air hung heavy with unspoken explanations. "I told you he wouldn’t be ready to talk yet," Sirius muttered to James. Remus could hear the rustling of footsteps against leaves and stones slowly become quieter as they walked away.

Alone on the boulder, Remus grappled with the tumult of emotions that he tried to gain control of once more. The betrayal felt raw, and the realization of the dangers they had all faced - the ultimate consequence that could have befallen him- his friends could never understand. As he lifted his head and looked beyond the edge of the boulder down to the valley below, he wondered if anyone would care if he simply let go.
