it's his birthday ;) for this one, i decided to do things differently and work on the values before doing the colors. honestly... i don't like painting this way xD but maybe i just haven't found the right workflow so i'll try again some other time.

We need a Brave Alcryst that reminds people that he's more than a wet cat

My opinion might be skewed because of the first supports of him I got, but I've never really seen him as that much of the sad wet cat prince everyone talks about. This is the same prince who was willing to strike down his father so Diamant wouldn't have to suffer the burden. He sweetly comforts Céline when he learns that she suffers from nightmares. He's outright hostile to Ivy for her role in Morion's death. He actively returns the support he receives from Lapis and Citrinne back to them

Despite his issues, Alcryst has his own kind of strength that he's always willing to use when he needs to

FE Engage redesign series: Lapis, Alcryst and Citrinne

Design notes:

For Lapis I wanted to show in her design that she's a village girl; and that even tho she tries to hide it, people can usually tell pretty quickly.

Also, Lapis' are blue, so I made her blue🤷🏻

Honestly, the Brodia brothers have some of the best designs in the game! I don't actually think Alcryst needed much changing, but I still wanted to give him my own spin!

Since he's an archer, I went a little lighter on the armor. I also tried making him look a bit more lanky with slumped shoulders; then the change to his promoted class, which is more bulky and stable, will be more drastic to show his character growth!

I wanted to bedazzle Citrinne a little more to emphasize her wealth and family business. But she's also fun and playful, so I made her design more asymmetrical as well!

Diamant and Alcryst: Finding validation

Both of the Brodian princes struggle with living up to expectations, but for completely different reasons

Diamant is viewed as the ideal heir to the throne. He is strong, intelligent, and mature. He's easily superior to his father Morion by being more levelheaded than he is. Many members of the nobility throw all kinds of praise onto Diamant, but there's one important caveat. He doesn't want to be the type of the king they're expecting

In a sense, Diamant intends to "betray" the Brodia they are used to. He wants to turn his back on the warfare and military strength they have thrived on in favor of something more peaceful. The validation he receives from his kingdom is actually more of a burden and an obstacle that's impeding his chosen path

Alcryst sees him self as worthless and has stated that he's used to being second best. His brother's the heir. He's the spare. During his younger years, he's gotten used to having people say how he'll never measure up to Diamant and just accepted that he'll always be in his shadow

Even when surrounded by people who don't compare him to Diamant, Alcryst has trouble accepting any kind of praise without second guessing if he's worthy of it. The lack of validation had a reached a point where he just doesn't know how to process it

The special thing about the brothers is how they learn to build each other without the expectations placed on them. Diamant is incredibly upset when he sees how bad Alcryst's confidence is and takes effort to encourage him to have more pride. His approach is also pretty gentle and reassuring. He doesn't try to push him out of his comfort zone, but to just train with him and find the strength unique to him

On Alcryst's end, once he realizes that Diamant isn't as perfect as he believes, they're both allowed to simply exist without anyone's expectations weighing them down. Which is exactly what Diamant wanted in the first place. While he prefers to keep his flaws hidden from others, he's perfectly fine with Alcryst knowing he has his own fears. I think it's telling that when Alcryst praises Diamant as the crown prince and a good brother, he only responds to the brother part

Between Diamant and Alcryst, we are shown that getting validation is only meaningful when it comes from the right person in the right way. The younger brother who learns to value his big brother's words more than the criticisms of the crowd. The older brother who feels weighed down by everyone's perfect image of him and just wanted his baby brother to accept the flawed imperfect person he really is
